Without any doubt, I have found my new repair shop. I drive an older model Mercedes ML320cdi and recently had it at three Twin Cities shops (after the dealership tried to 'bait and switch' me I walked out complaining LOUDLY for all to hear in my best deaf guy voice). All metro shops wanted almost as much just to diagnose it as John's Garage did for the entire repair. It may be a bit of a drive and they don't do loaner cars (highly recommended this as it would pull others in) but SO worth it to work with a man who is straightforward and honest about his work. Hands down the best car shop I've been to. John is incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful (without being condescending, for those of us that aren't auto experts). I just moved here from a warm climate, and he gave me tons of tips. He even helped clean the leaves out from under my hood and made sure the battery jumper pack I bought would work well for my car. I probably wouldn't have noticed, but John called to inform me what happened and scheduled the repair at his own expense. I arrived without an appointment and was serviced immediately. Our SUV received a synthetic oil change, 6 quarts, for only $68. John was competent, knowledgable, friendly, and efficient. I didn't want to go to the dealers for my Mazda as I am sure they were just trying to get more money out of me. I looked up auto repair shops in Rochester and found John's Garage. I am taking a very long trip by myself and wanted to make sure nothing was going to fail on me while driving. I have done my own car repairs and maintenance for about 35 years, but am getting to the point where I would rather give the more major repairs to someone else. I started shopping around for a mechanic, and John got good reviews. What has impressed me about John - he takes the time to talk through the repair, discuss costs, what is needed, what is not. He's very conscious about part quality, knows what he's doing, has reasonable labor rates, does his work on time, and is easy to deal with. I know cars very well, and was impressed that he was able to talk to me, not AT me, no BS, just a straight-up guy. I got burned by mechanics / shops early on, so I was admittedly very skittish ... After my daughter had her Mercedes in to get fixed just a few weeks earlier, she was stuck on the Interstate near Austin, on a Saturday afternoon before Christmas, with no steering. The mechanics in Austin noticed the recent repairs and told her the guys in Rochester must be incompetent. The belt and pulley was so badly worn when they replaced it, there was NO reason they should have missed it. Guess she needs to go to Austin, MN for her Mercedes repairs! read more

I recently relocated to Rochester from NY state where I had a mechanic who specialized in German vehicles. A little research revealed that John's Garage might be a good option locally. I have since taken my car to John for repairs, and he has beyond exceeded my expectations in finding a mechanic. Not only does John truly understand German engineering, he is extremely competent in his repairs and honest about what the vehicle needs and what it does not.
