OMG! This place is amazing. I have been taking cardio kickboxing and tonight I took my first cardio boxing class. If you are looking for a gym that's all about checking people out and hooking up, go someplace else. If you want a gym with great instructors who are going to get you to sweat your ass off, to get you to do more than you thought you could. To make you stronger, faster, more energetic and have fun doing it all then this is definitely the place for you. I have been going to John's Gym since 11/2011 and it has been the best experience I have ever had at a gym (I have been to Fitness 19/Golds Gym). The instructors hired by John's Gym are amazing and the best I have ever encountered. I trained with Jasmine and she really helped me understand nutrition and what it really takes to shed those law school pounds I gained. Everyone here treats you like a friend and are geniunly interested in helping you get into shape. I am leaving John's Gym as I am moving but even that process was easy and not messy like most gym's make it! This place is an amazing place whether your a beg. or advanced. I was a beg./out of shape and I never felt out of place. I needed something different to do because I reached a plateau with my regular workouts and was bored going to the regular gym across town. I'm not really into crossfit so I thought trying out a boxing class or too would provide the extra push I needed. Johns Gym does so much more than boxing and I've really enjoyed being a member for that last 6 months. Plus it's kinda fun to hit things after a stressful day and you always feel like you achieved a major accomplishment when the class is over. The people who run the gym and the others who work out there are supportive and always on top of things. This is the first gym that had me hooked and it was all due to the amazing cardio kickboxing classes and the amazing trainers. I was attending on a semi-regular basis but had to stop due to the class times. The gym doesn't offer childcare and my son is too young to join a program there so working out was difficult with my son occasionally wanting to interact with me while I worked out. I would be a regular if there was a childcare option but I also understand this location may not have the space for that so I plan on starting back up as soon as i can get it all figured out. I look forward to enrolling my son in a youth program there and continuing with my cardio kickboxing. I recommend this gym to anyone that needs that extra motivation to get into a workout that is too fun to feel like a workout ;-) read more

Carey Huckaby, the Boxing instructor, was a guest instructor at an event we put on each month called Martial Arts In The Park. I love this place. I've been to a couple of different gyms, and John's Gym is the best combination of effectiveness, fun, and community. I thought that I would be intimidated at first because it's a "boxing gym", but everyone is so friendly, outgoing, and are all at different exercise levels. It seems like everyone just feeds off each other's positive energy. The instructors are top notch. John and the instructors truly care about your success. I've had 3 different instructors for cardio boxing, and they've all been amazing. They know what they're doing. From day one, I felt welcomed and motivated to get the most from my workout. The cardio boxing class is the best workout that I've had. Really. I've taken kickboxing, Zumba, and spinning at other gyms. I don't think that I've ever felt the way that I do after I leave John's Gym. We use the bags during class, which is something that a lot of other gyms don't have. I get in the zone and really feel like I'm training for something! I brought my Garmin to one of my classes, and it showed that I burned 820 calories in 60 min! I was also surprised at the monthly membership price. You're definitely getting more than what you're paying for. They offer several of other classes in the morning, evening, and on Saturdays. I went here with a friend two weeks ago for the Brazilian Jui Jitsu and it was awesome! I'm big into fitness but in this area I was a newbie and had never done any kind of training like this before. The coach was very nice and accomodating being that we were both brand new to to the practice. It kicked my butt! I was a great workout and even within an hour I felt I was progressing. The owners were both there at the time and were so friendly. This place is different than your typical gym, I can't wait to start up next week! Honestly I cancelled my Lifetime Fitness membership last week so that I can start coming here regularly! If you want a friendly environment and are tired of the cookie cutter gym routine, I highly suggest giving this place a shot. I'm pretty sure your first class is always free. read more

Although my son and I are rather new to Jiujitsu, not a single moment inside of Johns Gym has felt in any way uncomfortable. We felt completely welcomed here, and relaxed. Which is hard to say because BJJ is very intimidating at first, but with the genuine care that everyone shows to all the grapplers, that intimidation is lifted instantly. While here, my son and I have grown to love BJJ and look forward to each class we take. Everyone is beyond friendly, and knowledgeable, they dont leave anyone feeling like they cant do this and really take the time to teach. Even with the class having people at different levels with their belts, everyone is amazing, and helps teach each other so everyone grows together. You for sure feel like family while attending the classes because you can see and feel the groups desire to grow as a group rather than individuals. Awful experience! Kylie was very rude and I called to speak to a manager or the owner and got Carrie who in the middle of my explaining what was happening put me on hold 3 times and was going to give me back to Kylie. I explained to her I already talked to her and I wanted to speak with someone else. She said she would have someone from the office contact me. And guess what, Kylie contacted me and said there is nothing else we can do for you! Im so so disappointed in this whole experience which is very unfortunate for my son. I've been a member at a lot of gyms over the years, but nothing comes close to what I have found at John's in the level of intensity and the sincerity of instructors in ensuring a good and safe physical training experience. Just having closed out my first full month, I have attended MMA, Fit to the Core, and a BJJ Beginner's Class. I learned right away that I need to spend some time addressing some old serious shoulder and ankle injuries in the MMA and Fit to the Core classes before I move more confidently into the technique-oriented classes (BJJ, Boxing, Muay Thai). But, I think that after a couple more months of strength, flexibility and endurance training, that I'll be ready to jump into those more hardcore classes without worrying that I'm going to fall apart. BJJ? Absolutely! Boxing, Muay Thai? Yeah, I'm going to give those a shot too. One of the best things about John's Gym - in addition to the friendliness and professionalism of the trainers and the other members - is that everyone seems very concerned with helping you find balance between proper technique, safety, and strength/endurance-building. This is something that I have seriously missed out on in other gyms, even with personal trainers. John's trainers certainly don't let you get away with anything half-assed or sloppy. But I haven't been made to feel embarrassed about scaling back and modifying when needed to avoid aggravating old problems as I rebuild muscle and work on flexibility. The line between pushing yourself and just doing something stupid is an easy thing to cross, but the folks at John's give you room to find a place on your own that supports physical challenge with all the support and instruction you need to take safe and measured steps. That said, if you're looking to push yourself to the very limit and you're healthy enough to make that happen, I can't think of a better place that John's to find that challenge. Rodrigo's MMA classes are no joke when it comes to conditioning and physical coordination and Henry's Fit To The Core class is forcing me to utilize muscles and joints I didn't even know I have. If you're looking for just a muscle factory, maybe John's isn't the first place you should check. If you want some serious, full-body strength and endurance training with a lot of focus on technique then you shouldn't look anywhere else but John's. It is well-worth the drive I am making to Cedar Park from Central Austin multiple times a week. I'm in it for the long-haul and I'm not looking back. ~Michael read more

This place has a complete joke of a program for kids. If you are expecting an organized, structured, disciplined environment, this is not the place. It's a daycare-like atmosphere with kids running all over the place while 2-3 other adult classes are taking place in other parts of the gym with overly-loud music blaring in the background. My child was signed up to go two times a week. One day of the week is spent strictly fighting or sparring against other kids. They basically put a helmet on your kid, put them in the ring and let them go at it with another child while the instructor stands there offering little instruction while taking video on his phone. The other day is more of an attempt at a lesson but most times the kids just ended up back in the ring fighting each other. Unfortunately you have to sign up for 3 - 6 months at a time, so be sure to check it out before you commit to anything. We will look into another place for sure!! read more

I was dragged to a cardio boxing class here against my will. I totally thought it would be a cheesy group workout and I wouldn't get anything out of it. Wow I have never been more wrong about anything in recent memory! Within the first 7 minutes of my first cardio boxing class I had put more work in than I'd been able to push myself to do in years. The gym itself is no frills, but that's what makes it so great! Everyone that comes there comes in to WORK. The group classes are taught by skilled and knowledgeable instructors who do a great job of finding new muscle groups I didn't know I had! By attending the cardio boxing class just twice a week I started to see a significant improvement in not only my cardiovascular endurance, but also my overall strength. I still have a long way to go to achieve my personal fitness goals, but I now that I could never reach them without John's Gym. Go. Now. Just make sure you don't quit after Coach Rob's pre-warm-up! What a great gym. I joined Johns Gym in November of last year. I always wanted to try jiu jitsu and never had any martial arts experience... needless to say I was nervous . From day one I felt welcomed by John, Jasmine and everyone in the gym. After a few short months I have really begun to fall in love with this sport. John is great instructor who has been patient enough to deal with a beginner like myself and at the same time a very knowledgeable, encouraging and motivating person who I truly trust and value. I am not a member of John's Gym, but if I still lived in Austin, I would be in a heartbeat. I live and train BJJ in Baton Rouge, but was able to drop in on a class while visiting my family. The instruction and technique was absolutely top notch, and every member was welcoming and more than happy to train with me. For years I had been planning to get back into some kind of martial arts training, specifically jiu-jitsu. So, when I saw an ad for a free Veteran's Jiu-jitsu program at John's Gym, there were no more excuses. I began attending classes about six weeks ago and I have thoroughly enjoyed it! There are no egos, no bullies, and it is very much a family atmosphere. Even if you aren't a veteran, there is so much more to this gym besides the free Veteran's Jiu-jitsu program that is worth checking out! All it took was one class and total exhaustion to make up my mind. Try their cardio-boxing or cardio-kickboxing for an hour work out. The cool thing about Yelp and TripAdvisor and other sites, is that you get a sense of what is important to the reviewer - which is not always what is important to you. If you are a 22 year-old dude, looking to learn to kick someone's a$$ and someday work your way into a position as a doorman . . . John's Gym and this review are not for you. I'm a (ahem) married-with-kids, 40 something year-old. I've been training BJJ for the past 10 years. I've visited dozens of schools across the US and abroad, and I will tell you that John's Gym is about as cool, laid back, and competent as it gets. I've met a hundred black belt instructors - very few with the "zero-level" of ego as the head instructor at John's gym. They've certainly tipped their cap to traditional jiu-jitsu with a pretty cool Gracie mural on the wall, and their instruction follows suit. The owner (you guessed it, "John") springs to the door to greet each guest and member. The BJJ students range in skill level, but all are equally helpful training partners. While MAYBE not the most critical consideration in choosing a gym (and I only train BJJ here), there did appear to be a fair amount of attractive women kickboxing as well (giggity). For the classes that they offer (BJJ, full boxing and kickboxing training facilities, weight training, cardio and fitness), their tuition is embarrassingly low. Seriously, they should raise that. The facilities are clean, spacious, and fairly easy to get to from 183. If you're a guy or a girl looking to build a relationship with a very unique gym owners and instructors - if you're not some meathead looking to learn "UFC," - if you're looking for like-minded people to get you in really good shape, then check these guys out. There's no way that I would have spent this much time writing a review unless these guys were really worth it. read more

NOT A SCAM ALERT!- I saw the review claiming the 16 week weight loss program was a scam. It's definitely not. Yes, during sign up they offer a FULL YEAR membership for $600 but you don't have to take it. I think they even further discount that $600 if you decide to do the FULL year. They charge you $50 a month. That's it. You can come to every class if you want- the only deal is you have to go AT LEAST 48 times in 16 weeks- that's only 3 times a week. They also give you a meal plan for every meal, every week for the whole 16 weeks, including recipes. Its only been 2 weeks and I've lost 2 inches off my waist. Pretty sure sign up is closed now but don't let the "SCAM ALERT" review keep you from signing up to future programs. This is an amazing deal. The staff is super friendly. They've listened to everyone's concerns and have tried to accommodate everyone's needs. I've struggled with weight for a few years now and already so thankful for this program. read more
