Unexpected fee after cancellation + refund refused We enrolled our son, Talen, at Johns Gym in Austin and withdrew/cancelled his membership in April as a result of a blood clot and condition that does not allow him to box anymore. After the cancellation, we were still charged an additional fee. We contacted the gym right away to request a refund, but we were told we missed the reimbursement/refund window, so a refund would not be provided. I understand businesses have policies, but this felt frustrating and unfair given that we had already withdrawn him. I'm leaving this review so other families clearly understand the billing and refund timelines before signing up. I'd appreciate the gym revisiting this situation and making it right. read more

My son's father had been stalking us and I had to hide where we live. Our assailant had a restraining order which has now expired and due to the manner in which the judicial system works, one has to know the where a-bouts of their attacker to have them properly served. It's kinda hard when they're a fugitive. As most victims know, a piece of paper does little good. So, I decided it was best to learn the skills which your business claimed to have, skills I wanted to learn and my son too to protect ourselves! I had driven by this gym a couple of times and when I researched best boxing gyms in the Austin area, this one came up. I had been going for almost a year. Unfortunately, I moved and could no longer attend, but I really want to write a good comment. I've been to a couple different boxing gyms in Austin and sometimes those gyms have a lot of heart but don't always have a good curriculum or a structure. It never felt that way at John's gym. The class, even when big, you felt like you would still get time to ask questions about technique and the instructor would come around and fix your errors. Both boxing instructors have been extremely knowledgeable and do more than just teach technique. They talk about what you should be thinking about as you are boxing. They also teach basics really well and have different levels so you can move up. One thing I would have liked is a separation of conditioning and technique. There are times I would have liked to focus on technique more. Overall, the customer service is great. Not sure what the other comments on the reviews were about. John and Kyle (who handles customer service) have been really good at calling you and refunding if needed. The one month membership is real and you can cancel. Just be an adult and don't forget. So let me say first, the trainers and the other "classmates" were awesome. They were very helpful and patient and taught us a lot in one class. That's where it all went downhill. We were told that we were able to get a 30 day free try to test out the gym and boxing. This was what brought us here because boxing being a tough sport, we weren't sure we would like it. Before attending the first class, I asked a few times about monthly cost only to be told that we would discuss it when I got there. Fair enough. So after the first class, we were told that we could officially sign up for the month trial. Great, let's do it. Well it requires a credit card on file. As you can see from other reviews, it isn't always that simple. I haven't had the greatest experience with giving my card for trials so I simply said that I didn't want to put my card on file. The owner said, oh that's ok, then we will need six months up front to be refunded if you decide not to continue. So $180 a month, for six months up front. $1080 EACH for a free trial. Wow. So I did what anyone would do. I went to Academy and bought the equipment I needed for half the cost and have lost 22 pounds in the comfort of my home boxing gym. My advice. If you are interested in boxing as a sport where you want to get in the ring, proceed with John's Gym, with caution and a hand on your wallet. Visited this place to see if it would be a good place to put my daughter. Everything looked okay at first, then I noticed the kids were getting different levels of attention, and not the understandable kind. I asked someone why this group is getting more attention and he said "Those kids are the ones who enter tournaments." I asked "So that means they get all the attention? What about these other kids?" The other kids barely got any attention, there was no discipline, order or structure. They were loud, playing and not paying attention. And the instructor didn't seem to really even care. The instructors seemed very aloof about the other kids only focused on select individuals. And even with them they were lacking in discipline, order and structure. It's obvious these people pick favorites and ignore the rest, neither of these are ok. This makes the kids feel better or worse than others. If u want to spend 200 a month on a place for ur kid to socialize then here u go. But I'm looking for a place my daughter can learn both physically and mentally and this is not the place for that. read more

Joined a 6 month package for boxing with the gym. Two weeks after I joined I broke my hand in a car accident. I asked the owners if I could put my membership on pause as I would be out for at least 3 months while my hand was recovering, they denied my request. After not being allowed the courtesy to pause (with every intention of picking up where I left off) I didn't care to go anymore. Then there was an issue with cancellation as I did it over text and not via signing a cancellation document, so I was charged another couple of months until that was taken care of. The atmosphere is positive, the instructors are nice and knowledgeable and it's suppose to feel like a 'mom and pop' place, but I found it to feel very corporate when it came towards dealing with the owners as I was denied to pause my membership with good reason. I felt as though they could have simply accommodated me and I'd still be going this very day. All in all, paid 8 months for 2 boxing lessons. read more

I went to Johns' Gym for 3 months before I had to deal with an old injury and on doctors orders had to stop punching because it was stressing my shoulder. The short time I was there had a very positive experience with qualified teachers, healthy clean environment and class members were friendly, nice and focused on learning and staying fit. Slight challenge with the fine print on the contract, make sure you read and understand the details and pay attention to the billing process so there are no surprises. There was a bit of issue related to the auto renewal clause which caused some needless frustration and tension so that is why only 3 stars overall. However after some back and forth emails it got resolved as the owner was understanding and flexible and provided quality customer service in the end So advice is pay as much attention to the contract as you do to the instructors...if you do you will have a great experience at John's Gym. read more

I never thought I would be one of those people who went through withdrawl if they missed a session at the gym, but that's what this place has turned me into - a healthy, energetic, happy, monster! I have been taking classes at John's Gym since January because I wanted to be fit and healthy, and know how to defend myself if it was ever needed. Pleasantly, I also dropped 18 pounds, so that is a bonus! Everyone who works here is so patient and kind and helpful, not to mention incredibly skilled and knowledgeable in their field. I like this place -- it feels small because as a regular (3-4x/week) all the employees know your name and greet you warmly, but there's quite a bit offered here. The cardio pass, $59/month for 6 mos contract (but check out the GO! Local deal! Month-to-Month!) gets you into cardio kickboxing, cardio boxing, TRX, zumba, and yoga. Their website is *mostly* up to date...with a few minor oddities you'd only know if you went as often as I did. The morning cardio classes were SUPER small (3-4 people) and friendly, with the 6pm ones far more packed (15-20). Regarding cardio boxing/kickboxing: Janell and Jesika are good all around cardio workouts, Megan is good cardio but be ready for LOTS of squats, Carey is THE boxer and always in your face to go harder. Unfortunately, all but Carey (and one who left) move so fast you're not usually hitting good punches, and hence relieved my anger less :P TRX with Carianne is fun strength training, I really like how it's adjustable on your level of strength. They also have BJJ and technique boxing but they cost $10/month each (discipline) on top of the $59. I wasn't keen on rolling around or getting hit in the stomach, meh. read more

I started personal training with Jasmine about 3 weeks ago and couldn't be happier. She's been amazing. She developed an easy to follow meal plan, modifies each training session to match my ability and increase my strength, and is always giving me tips to improve every day health improvements. She both motivates and pushes me to do more each time. I also attend the cardio boxing class taught by Kurtiss and the cardio kickboxing class taught by Katie. Both instructors are amazing. The owner John is also extremely friendly. The gym is small and intimate and the staff is incredibly nice and welcoming; much better than the large corporate gyms. I never liked working out just for the sake of doing it. I need to trick my mind into focusing on other things... enter Jiu Jitsu. Started taking BJJ classes here, and I am really enjoying it. John (owner) has been teaching them thus far, and he's a super nice guy. He even let me borrow his car for a bit when I had some troubles with mine (don't come in and ask to borrow his car please). He's bringing in Rodrigo "Brucutu" Cabral to take over classes soon, so I'd imagine we'll be learning a lot of new stuff. All the guys I've rolled with so far have been very friendly, and I haven't run in to any "I must break you" guys. We work hard and push each other, but the goal is to learn and get better. I had an great experience working out at John's Gym! I had just moved to Austin, and I searched all over for a great gym to practice BJJ, and I found it here. John's Gym offers world class BJJ and other martial art instruction for an incredibly good price. I have been to quite a few gyms in the past, and I never felt as welcomed as I did here. There is quite a gender and age mix of the martial arts practitioners, and you really are treated like family when you walk in the door. The Jiu-Jitsu instructor was amazing, but he was also very open and very easy going. You train very hard, and I got in great physical shape, but the instructor never tries to stroke his own ego -- he is most focused on you, the student. I don't have children myself, but I know that the gym offers a number of great children's classes as well. The kids always look like they're having an awesome time training. I was also very impressed with the cleanliness of the facility; the gym was very well kept. I would DEFINITELY still be training here if I didn't have to move away for work, and I was very bummed when I had to leave. I went to check out the school last week and found that this place uses high pressure sales tactics. To start, the lady in the office was somewhat evasive about the prices. And you are not allowed to take all the classes for one flat price (like at other gyms in the area.) I also didn't like that they were playing music while training was going on (it sounded like Kanye West or something, and that is not my cup of tea.) I chose to look somewhere else. Then I started getting emails from them, as well a text messages (one of which included a photo of the woman at the front desk - why?) I never replied, but I then ended up getting a call from them. It's almost like being stalked by an ex. The place I chose instead was $150 for striking, BJJ etc. with well credentialed instructors, and NO SELLS PITCH. As a veteran to kickboxing classes from other folks who opened shop in the same spot as where John's Gym is located--and failed--I was thrilled when I learned John's Gym was opening. What I absolutely loved is when I first walked in there was John..instructing...who took the time to come over and meet me and answer all my questions. He offered a free class to so I could get a feel--which I did take the next day. I ended up joining with a friend after seeing an ad in Austin Woman magazine for a 'join with a friend' special. This was just over a year ago. The schedule for kickboxing is ideal with morning and evening classes...there's also cardioboxing, TRX, zumba, yoga, focus mit training and an array of martial arts classes for adults and children. What I also love is the family atmosphere...there are classes going on simultaneously making the energy in the place just come alive! The instructors are top-notch...Janelle and Meagan are my two that I usually go to and each time they really kick my behind--even after all this time. Their experience is unmatched, and every class is a full house. The results? Stamina, muscle tone, more energy, weight loss and best of all...I sleep like a baby! Who wouldn't want that? Pricing is month-to-month and you can cancel at anytime with at least a few days notice...you also have the option to freeze if you want to take a break or if funds are limited. This allows you to come back without interruption. You know the saying from Cheers..'where everybody knows your name'....yup..this is the place and it couldn't be more welcoming--and motivating to want to work out. You actually make friends with the staff and members. John's is really good with their Facebook page--informative, and engaging. Do not let your kid come here if you actually want your child to learn discipline. Being in the military I know something about discipline. It blew my mind the lack of etiquette and consideration toward every student and showing immense favoritism toward those competing toward championships wanting only to receive trophies. Which completely understandable, but what about the rest of the kids? The other students get tossed aside with the new ones and have no chance of progression. So it leads to the fact that it's a waste of money for those parents who do not want their kids to compete Also that'll does not seem that they know how to properly teach discipline seeing as the students don't listen. Also instead of correcting them with that fact that they are not listening, they get told to simply sit down and get basically put in time out due to them not listening to the instructors mediocre disciplinary actions. They don't command respect so why should it be given. The point we send our children to this is to instill proper discipline for the future. They're supposed to be learning something from being here, right? Not just how to kick another child's ass. I would not waste my time or money here then what I already have and will always regret. For $200 have my child sit in the corner for not listening? I can do that at home for free. read more

I moved here in August from out of state and finding a good Jiu Jitsu program I could continue training at was important to me. I had 4 or 5 recommended gyms on the list and tried Johns Gym first. Long story short I didn't visit any other gyms, I knew this was the place for me. The instruction here is outstanding! There are multiple instructors that bring different things to the table giving you a variety. I enrolled my 8 year old son into the kids classes and they are great too! I came here for the Brazilian jujitsu and eventually muy thai. there's a lot more hard core places out there to train, but I picked this one. 1. great place for family- my wife is taking bjj now with me, and my daughter is starting. No big ego's or attitudes, no guys hitting on all the ladies. Just people looking to train and have fun! 2. No drama- there is a nice open door policy- the great thing about bjj is the camaraderie, even with people in other states and countries. if you're in town, drop by and train! no secrets, none of that "you train here and only here" crap 3. unlimited training- some places limit you're training. you pay a lot per month and can only go to 2 classes a week. that's a tough way to learn, and expensive. there are decent places out there, but if you want good training, good atmosphere and learn a great sport without the drama and egos, or if you're a woman that wants to give it a shot, this is your place! read more

My first impression was "this place is very professional!" Because they immediately sent a confirnation email of my "free class" not only were they attentive after the phone call they also contacted me at my place of employment the day of my free trial class to confirm I'd still attend later that evening. Well i arrive about 15min late! The woman at the front desk had me sign a waiver for my son (understandable) he mentioned to me that he forgot his wraps, the lady tells him "its ok, just don't hit the bag too hard" i immediately asked "do you have wraps for sale?" Why would zhe not offer to sell me wraps? My son has been boxing for over 3yrs i believe this place is strictly for ppl that are doing this as a hobby, i proceeded to let my son practice- at the end they hit the bag for about 10min and worked out for about 20min GRANTED WE WERE LATE! There was NO diversity, no knowledge of what the gym consists of, the woman at the front desk was BEYOND frustrated with all of my questions, she honestly didnt understand my questions at all- she told me ppl train for fun they don't compete- she also said i needed to talk to someone named manny- i asked when he'd be there she said "maybe, Wednesday" i asked if he could call me or if i should call him she said "i can tell him to call you but i doubt he will" My experience felt like her entire demeanor changed once she put a face to the voice over the phone, it seemed as if she didn't want us there-she was not customer friendly nor knowledgeable of the class and she literally shrugged her shoulders and rolled her eyes as i walked out! read more

Ive been training in the noon class for about 10 months now and I have really enjoyed it. I am in much better shape, my stress level has gone down, and I have learned a lot. I have competed 3 times and was able to win gold in the Naga austin no gi beginner division. It is a great atmosphere very welcoming to both a serious competitor and a fresh white belt. I have not been to John's gym in about a year, but I wanted to note that when I was a member I did have a great time at the gym. I mostly attended the cardio boxing and cardio kickboxing classes, and my wife attended those as well as a yoga class that was available for a short time, and we both enjoyed the workouts. The classes are very upbeat and challenging, will definitely sweat a lot and burn a lot of calories. The one issue I did have was with how crowded the classes often became, but you can only do so much with the space you are given, and I believe the schedules have moved around since I was there so perhaps the issue was addressed. My main reason for leaving the gym was that I could not attend enough classes to balance out the cost due to my work schedule and the classes I could attend were in peak traffic times, so when you have to drive from Pflugerville area to John's Gym and don't want to fork out the toll road money on top of monthly fees it can turn into a very long drive. So, if you live in the area I would definitely recommend the gym, John is a great guy, very personable, and so were his other staff members that I encountered while attending the gym. read more

I must have researched half a dozen other Brazilian jiu jitsu programs in the Austin area before I joined John's Gym over a year ago. Starting my jiu jitsu journey as an overweight 39 year old was beyond intimidating, but right from the start they put me at ease. Whether it was setting up my first free class with Jasmine online up to walking in my first day at the 620 location where John shook my hand and welcomed me, I couldn't have asked for a better way to begin. Without exception, every coach and gym member that I have ever met or trained with in the John's Gym family has been positive and selfless. Pressure, accountability and camaraderie are applied in equal doses to make for a great experience each time I walk through the the door. Six months ago, my wife took me to my first cardio-kickboxing class and about halfway through, I thought "holy crap, I'm going to die. Get me to a couch, stat!" She had found John's Gym several weeks earlier, and she and my 10-year-old soccer machine of a son had joined. My boy loves the junior boxing classes, and they're really helping his soccer. Well, after six months I've lost 22 pounds, and my strength and cardiovascular fitness level have never been better. The energy and encouragement I and my family get from the owners, the fantastic instructors, and the friends who we train with have driven us to try so many new and rewarding fitness regimens. My 13-year-old daughter loves the cardio-kickboxing classes, and I'm learning some Muay Thai in the Strike Fit class. The Fit to the Core class is incredible, and now my wife and I are training in kettlebell sport with the Iron Tamers class. Strength, power, and endurance--that's what you can build at John's Gym. The bottom line for me is this: Because of the generous, welcoming, goal-oriented environment established by the instructors and owners and fostered by the community of athletes who train there, I don't just go to John's Gym. The gym itself is ok, I enjoyed the teachers to varying degrees but in terms of technique i would say it's a decent place to learn and practice even though the facility is run down. The reason I didn't give a higher rating is that they make it real hard to cancel, without going into too many details it wasn't handled correctly and the gym was communicating with me over text. If you want to learn real boxing technique, this is the gym for you. If you want to commit to boxing as your main source of exercise, this gym is for you. I don't think this is the best type of gym for the average joe just trying to get a workout in or box on occasion. The sucky part of this gym is the availability of classes in relation to the cost. There were 3 level-1 classes offered per week and two of those classes were at the same time as some of my other dance/fitness classes. So if you attend other types of workouts, it makes the class options more limited. As someone who travels for work, I couldn't make as many classes as I would have liked and decided to not move forward with membership. If I remember correctly, they don't have class pass options, so to attend class, you must have a membership. They have an old school sign-up policy that I would consider inconvenient for people especially in the age of technology. You do not learn about the costs of the gym until after your initial class. You must choose a membership to move forward with the 30-day trial and cancel before the 30 days are up. They take down your credit card information on a piece of paper which is something that makes me nervous but I did abide by the policy. I would be more comfortable with an encrypted system like MINDBODY. There is a sign-up fee alongside a monthly fee that you will be charged if you do not cancel your membership within the "30-day free trial." You have to physically go into the gym with a written document stating you want to cancel to your membership. This was all discussed prior to signing any documents. I was one day late on canceling my membership and I was charged about $400 ($197 for registration, $200 for the membership I think). This was not a surprise but it was annoying. read more

I didn't have a good experience here. I went to the boxing/kickboxing classes and I felt that the instructors weren't very helpful. I'm the type of person that needs instruction. I want someone to show me the correct form and coach me (at first, until I learn how to do it), especially since I'm not an experienced boxer. I came here to get a good workout. Also, the owner/manager wasn't very helpful. I asked him how to wrap my hands on the first day that I went and he was VERY unhelpful. He suggested that I look at a YouTube video which would have been fine, but the class started in 10 minutes. I would have appreciated it if he had taken 2 minutes to give me some pointers.
