The first thing Tom told me when he came over for the first day of work was: "How did you find these guys? They can't find new customers and all their existing customers aged out/died". We probably should have ran at this point. We had a quote from Johnson Brothers Construction to rebuild our shower that had a leaking drain. Their quote was very competitive ($10k + tax) and they seemed knowledgable enough, so we went with them, aware that things might go over the quoted amount given that every projects has unknown. We did have some unforeseen things happen, requiring an extra day of labor to strengthen the floor and some weirdness about the existing drain setup that was taken care of by a plumber in an hour. Yet, here we are, two months later with a total bill that is well over twice the quoted amount, a tiling job that is sub-par and a lot of finishing touches are still missing. When you hire a general contractor, you expect them to guarantee some level of quality and to advocate on your behalf with subcontractors. In our case, the tiling subcontractor not only did a horrible job, but also tried to increase the cost for some work we already sign-off on and way over ordered one of the types of tiles (that we had to pay for). In the end the subcontractor fixed as much as they could short of redoing the whole floor, but we were the one fighting for it and inspecting the work. JBC just stood by. JBC also had two subcontractor give us quote for some drywall for a transition strip. Their interfacing between these subcontractors is essentially a series of screenshots of iMessage conversations they have with those subs. I made it clear to the drywall sub that I wanted quotes for the different parts of the job. He gives us one opaque quote with possibly an extra $100 (??). The transition strip sub, what we hear is that he'll come by by the end of next week. Saturday comes and he is no where to be found. JBC gave no updates along the way. I could also talk about their opaque billing practices, how they're charging for labor hours that don't seem to line up with what I can see on my front door camera. Or how they have 3 guys show up for the same amount of time and yet one of them is charging for an extra half hour? Honestly I could go on and on. We definitely regret going with JBC for our job. I should have heeded my gut feeling when Tom said what he did. You definitely should. read more

They took a complicated porch and roof remodel, that required many permits and coordination of various trades, plumbing, electrians concrete dig and pour. Roof changed to a gable style and new water hookup for hot and cold dog wash. They assign a lead and stayed on track. They have access to various subcontractors and skilled themself. The way they bill is also very fair. I saw a bill every other week. remodeling is very expensive but it was easy to see what they were doing and less than original estimate. read more

Johnson Brothers demolished our rotten shower and installed new plumbing and tiles. Their bid was competitive, the work was finished quickly, and their leads were responsive. Upon inspection a few tiles needed to be reset, but they handled this professionally. The shower turned out great. The most frustrating part of our long kitchen remodel adventure was finding a contractor we trusted, and was available to do the work. We had already hired a designer and had completed plans in hand. Interviews with numerous contractors produced some high bids, busy schedules, and a few flakes. We were happy to find Johnson Brothers. They were available, their bid was competitive, and they seemed sincerely enthusiastic about our project. Our carpenter was Keith, who skillfully handled the job, including some challenging design elements in our plan. We were also impressed with Johnson Bros stable of high-quality sub-contractors, who always seemed available when they were needed. We didn't have a lot of down-time during our project. Yes, their were a few hiccups along the way, and ultimately we spent more then we had planned. However, our kitchen looks great, Johnson Brothers was the right choice for our project. read more

I hired Johnson Brothers to remodel my house, primarily to install a skylight and a ventilation fan in my bathroom, but also to do other odds and ends in the house that needed repair. I was really happy with the job they did. They finished the work in a very reasonable time frame, were easy to work with, and communicated well. Despite me adding to the list of tasks, they still managed to do the work and come in under what they originally estimated for the job (and only charged me for work performed + materials). The new additions to the house fit in seamlessly with the original construction. If I had to complain about anything it would be that there was a fair amount of dust cleanup needed afterwards, but frankly I'd rather do that cleanup myself than paying someone else for it. Overall, it was great to work with them, and I will use them again the next time I need remodeling work done. read more

TLDR: They let my dog out despite having explicit instructions of which door to use. Most stressful week of my life and the company did nothing to remedy the situation. If I could give zero stars I would. My mom's kitchen was being remodeled and was already 2 months past when it was supposed to be finished. So, when my family and I went out of town the kitchen was still being worked on. My dog was staying at my mom's house with the house/dog sitter and the contractors were given explicit instructions to only use the side door because we had blocked off the part of the house the dogs had access to. One day into the trip I got a call from the contractor saying that my dog had gotten out thirty minutes before hand because the contractors had used the back door (the one they were not supposed to use) and the gate was also open. They did nothing to try to find my dog and showed no remorse. I came back from the trip immediately and was distraught that my baby was gone, despite the fact that the situation was completely preventable. Thank god we found Cleo back after a week of her being loose. But with the vet bills, the cost of flying home, the cost of flyers etc., I was out $3000, which Johnson did nothing to reimburse. Oh wait, I did get a $100 gift card to a pet store. It was laughable. Anyways, beyond LOSING MY DOG, they also did a garbage job on my mom's kitchen. It took 6 months and basically everything had to be redone because it was done so poorly the first time. Additionally, the workers damaged my moms brand new washer/dryer by standing on it and made a huge brown stain on my mom's rug in a room they weren't even working on. read more

I hired Johnson Brothers to fix a leaking outdoor deck. I found Norm to be very friendly, and the estimate that he initially gave me was very competitive. The work started to progress at a steady albeit slow pace. Unfortunately, the initial verbal estimate of 'several hundred dollars' climbed to about $20K as the involvement of the job became more complex. Unfortunately I understand that a job can turn into more work than initially anticipated, but from several hundred dollars to $20,000 kindof took my breath away and caused me to lose confidence. The last step to the job was staining, and the color match was horrible. My shingle roof tiles are dark brown and the replaced matching tiles were basically tan in coloring. I have called and emailed repeatedly for the last three months to get it repainted. Norm and his colleague have both agreed that the painting was unsatisfactory and that the job would need to be redone, but I can't get anyone to return calls anymore. So, while my overall impressions of the work aren't horrible, the dramatic increase in project budget and the long, long waiting time and unfinished work makes me regretfully rate them a single star. Started the project last fall hoping to be done before the rain really set in. Now it's summer and still not finished. :( read more

I'm surprised to find that people are saying their bids are reasonable/competitive. We had them come bid an interior remodel and their price was 40% more than the 2 other bids that I received. We did not chose to go with them so I cannot speak to the quality of their work. The only reason I am giving them 3 stars was because of how quickly they responded, sent someone out to do a bid and gave us a bid. read more

After meetings and obtaining bids from three contractors for our project, remodeling our master bathroom, my wife and I decided to hire Johnson Brothers Construction from Lake City, Seattle. We were not mistaken and very happy with the outcome of our project. Our estimator, Scott, gave us the design and numbers that met our budget; our carpenter craftsman, Bob R, demolished the old bathroom, rebuilt the structure according to design and closely communicated with us the timeline, sources of supplies, ways to improve areas as originally forethought, and gave us real time updates. Their subcontractors like plumbers, electricians, and tile installers are excellent in doing their trades. Bob R is the center of communication and whenever we talked to their subcontractors, he was present and very knowledgeable go-to guy. We are very satisfied with their performance read more
