We hired Shirey Home Pro for significant deck repair on our 50plus-year-old house: A couple of joists had rot and the wood deck boards needed replacing despite regular maintenance through the years. At Shirey's suggestion, we used TimberTech Azek boards and found a MAXI version in Coastline grey. We're now done except for the custom railing on order, and couldn't be happier. Lead carpenter Bryan is a deck mastermind who was great at figuring out sound, good-looking solutions to our issues. Both he and fellow carpenter Jeromy were highly skilled and efficient, left the work site immaculate at the end of every day and were also just nice to have around. We like the results so much we added fascia and new board for our catwalks to the original agreement. Shirey's inside staff -- coordinator Ashley and bookkeeper Brenda -- are equally great, and especially good at timely, clear communication. This company is top notch from the first phone call with Ashley to the availability of the technicians and the wide variety of experience. We have been so impressed. Rich helped us with dry rot in our window sills and a few other things that popped up and Randy assisted us with hanging lights and being able to figure out the shower head issue to Andrey and Bryan hanging our garage ceiling storage rack. I had a handyman come out to screw down some metal railings that had become loose. We were able to work out estimates over email. They suggested replacing the screws with ones that were longer and larger. The estimated time was more than 2, but less than 4. I was working from home and unable to see the final work until later. It was ok, but not great. One of the railings was pretty solid. The other one was still slightly wobbly because some of the screws were not drilled down all of the way. I assume the handyman ran into issues. I also asked for the bolts to be painted and it was a bit sloppy with excess paint on the railings. I wasn't too terribly concerned until I saw the bill. It was $650 to replace 24 screws. The billed time was 4-hours. Even worse, the material cost somehow came out to $150. I exchanged emails with Shirey Home Pro, but they never tried explaining the latter. There is no way that 24 screws and a tiny amount of paint could come up to that. This was my first experience with them and I was hoping to use them for other small tasks. However, there is no way I would hire them again. The cost is simply too high and unpredictable. read more

I called Shirey Home Pro for an easy project at my place. I told them that I needed someone to bring a tall ladder to replace 4 light bulbs in a 20 ft ceiling. The people with whom I talked on the phone were very polite and helpful. The handyman who turned up at my house was also very nice. However, he turned up with a shorter ladder than what was necessary for the job. He even showed me the email that he had received with the details of the job clearly indicating the height of the ceiling. However, he still chose to bring a shorter ladder because, as he told me, people usually misjudged the height of their ceilings. Ok... mistakes happen. When I called back to reschedule, I was told that they wouldn't charge me for the handyman's time. Well, it goes without saying that I wasn't expecting to be charged for their mistsake. In fact, I was expecting a discount for the next appointment given that I had wasted my time waiting for the handyman to arrive only for the job not to be done. Now, i had to take time off work for the new appointment. I decided to find someone else. read more

I needed some work done on one of my rentals and called a number of Handyman services before I finally was recommended to Shirey. I called them and in one call got a date for an estimate. The repairman was very knowledgeable, recommended some good people for the work that they don't do (like septic and mobile home repair) and did the work in record time and for much less than I had anticipated. I really couldn't be happier with Shirey's Handyman Service. I live in a ~4-year-old home which just started leaking by one of the windows. Mike and Riley came out and did a thorough investigation, discovering that the leak was coming from a completely different source than any of us originally thought. In just a few hours total, they were able to explore every angle, go out and rent the materials they needed (including a very large ladder), come back and fix the issue, all for a completely reasonable cost. They were available to come out within a week of me calling them, while some other contractors couldn't come out until months later. A few years ago I bought new light fixtures for our deck. These had to be mounted on uneven cedar siding. An electrician who came to install them said he couldn't do it; the siding needed to be cut down and he wasn't authorized to cut siding. I finally called Shirey and they were amazing. First I got some emails with various suggestions for how it might be done. When the technician showed up he considered different ways of doing it and then found a way to do it without cutting it at all. Couldn't be happier with them. Had a guy paint and several other minor projects in preparation for moving into my new condo. One of the projects included a extensive installation (entire configuration is almost 35 feet) of track lighting in the living room. Due to problems with the junction box, he couldn't get the first line of track to line up flush with the ceiling. Once the first piece of track was installed, he couldn't get the the lights to work. Finally, told him to forget it and I would call an electrician. I called people advertising on Craig's List and referrals from friends. Got no responses. Found Shirey Home Pro. Working with Ann over the phone and sending her pictures made the estimation process very easy. My guy was Randy. He arrived as scheduled and after assessing things got to work. He had to take everything down and start all over but not only got the first track to lie flush with the ceiling but completed the project under the estimated time and got lights to work on every piece of track. They are my new go to place for small home projects and Randy will be my go to guy. Already called them back for a couple other projects to schedule. read more

Used them last Friday to fix my shower head leak. After 3 hours of work to replace the cartridge, the shower head leaks 5 time more than before. The guy left and said this is all he can do. I had to get an emergency plumber service on Saturday to rebuild the cartridge as the leak was so bad that I can't sleep on Friday night. DO NOT use them, very very bad service. read more

I've actually never written a negative review since joining Yelp and if you told me this would be the first I wouldn't have believed it. As a matter of fact -- a couple of years ago I wrote a glowing review of my initial projects working with the owners . As other reviewers have stated, things have clearly changed over at Shirey Handyman and not for the better. Our bid from their new staff member was $5300 -- we received a final bill of over $11,000. We were not provided with notice, asked for approvals or given any type of communication as to their 100% + overages. Based on this experience, I would not consider working with them again. read more

I wrote a bad review on this company that disappeared. I did not take it down. They did terrible work and padded their hours. They also fraudulently obtained signatures on two documents, did not give us copies and then later altered the documents. Worker # 1, did terrible work and padded his hours. We complained to Shirey and were given a run around, but we were promised a credit. They did give us a two hour credit, but charged our credit card for 4 hours of work that had to be redone. Worker #2 came to correct and complete the 1st workers job. He made a valient effort, but could not complete a fraction of the work. He left with newly applied, wet sheetrock mud on the project. After it dried we saw it too was a bad job. The tape he tried to repair separated again. Neither of the workers attempted portions of the work. This job had been estimated by construction professionals at 6 to 8 hours. Shirey billed for 14 hours and did not complete the job. Another contractor tore out all of Shirey's work and did a beautifful job in 8 hours. We trusted Shirey because we had their workers here as late as December 2011, and were delighted. All of those workers have since left the company. We had new hires working on our house and in the office. The company has changed. The recent job was taping and mudding beautiful cuts made for electrical repairs. The electricians made careful cuts and replaced the sheetrock with clean edges. They were also asked to do edging around one new door opening, priming and hanging two standards for wire shelves. The first Shirey worker put mud on that was so thick it took 2 days to dry in a warm room. Most of the the tape separated from the wall. He did not tape the door edges, just applied thick uneven mud to one side of the door. The second worker tore out most of his work and spent several hours trying to correct the uncorrectable. read more

We have had Shirey for two projects. The first was a few years ago when they fixed a roof leak around our fireplace that a couple of other contractors had already tried to fix and had failed. We have had NO leaks since Shirey worked their magic! The second project was just completed this fall. We have three short sets of stairs between our driveway and the front door and I wanted nice-looking metal railings installed on them. Shirey found a customer railing manufacturer and worked with him to make the railings and then installed them for us. I love that it was one-stop-shopping for us. WAY too expensive for average and slow work. All of these reviews about record time and worth every penny are not about the person that did my work. They charge by the hour and maxed out the 8 hour time quote (at $90 an hour!!!!) and still didn't finish my pre arranged list. As soon as they left I called a local handyman who will come and finish the job for $45 an hour and give me a flat rate quote. Also miscommunication, between office and me but I would have been happy to ignore that if all of my repairs would have been done in with the nearly one thousand dollars that I spent today. There truly is no other business that my husband and I trust more than Shirey Contracting. They have helped us out again and again. They are an over and beyond company who treats there clients like friends and family, not like a paycheck. We first hired Shirey when we decided to do a major remodel of our house. From my understanding, remodels can be nightmares. Ours never turned into one. Where we used to have an oppressive galley kitchen, we have an inviting, functional, and modern kitchen that I constantly use. It's the reason I learned to cook. Now I cook three times a day, nearly everyday. Our main bathroom is the envy of all that visit us. It is modern, sleek, and a dream to relax in. We've mostly abandoned our bedroom bath, for preference of our remodeled one. They removed a window in our back room, and replaced it with a door, which allows us to access a deck we had recently installed (this done by another contractor who was, indeed, a nightmare). This remodel was done a few years ago. We have since used Shirey Contracting/Handyman Services for a number of small home improvements and emergency needs. Last summer, the ice line in our refrigerator leaked. We have a basement bedroom, which is located directly underneath the fridge. Needless to say, the leak ran through and filled our bedroom drywall with water and ruined our downstairs carpeting. Riley Shirey personally came to our rescue. He instantly set upon the situation, allowing for repairs to be kept to the minimum needed. We've had a a minimalist entertainment unit custom designed and built and a gas fireplace unit installed. Our outside stairs started to suffer from wood rot. Shirey Handyman service helped us with cutting costs by cutting out and replacing just the immediately necessary portions of stair which is allowing us to wait at least another two years before we will need to replace the entire staircase. Just yesterday, our washer drain clogged and flooded our beautiful new carpeting. My husband was out of town. I panicked. I called Shirey. Again, one of the owners, Riley Shirey, came to my rescue within the hour. In doing so, we were able to avert a total disaster. Both of the owners, Donna and Riley, are incredibly caring, personable, and extremely professional. Donna has always worked very closely with us. They are very "hands-on." Every employee of theirs that we have met and/or worked with has been courteous, capable, quick, thorough, and exceptionally good at their job. Alert! An overcharged company. We called Shirey home Pro to replace an old ceiling fan in my condo bathroom and got charged for $828 ($470 for Junior labor of 4.5 hours, materials $228, dump charge $40, trip charge $15 and rest sales tax). We were able to negotiate with Shirey to take the dump fee off their outrageous bill but not for the rest of the bill. For this type of work, it definitely was overcharged for over $100 an hour. We later found out from a friend they found another company to install a new bathroom fan for only $520. I am writing this review in hope you would consider finding another company or contractor and very disappointed for a company like this overcharging their customers. read more

We worked with Shirey last summer for a deck project. A couple pieces need to be replaced and the whole deck need to be cleaned and re-stained. As the previous review said, we got an estimation way different than the actual hours. The color they used to paint the new pieces is so different than the original color, and they STAND OUT a lot! They agreed to re-stain and rematch the color and sent another guy to finish the job. Overall, it took about a month to finish the job they promised to be finished in three days. They are hard to communicate with, and not very patient or polite. And they are pricey. This summer, we noticed some moss over the deck and cleaned our deck with deck cleaner from home depot. But the stain came off over quite some area. I am not sure if it is related to the stain that was used or not. Overall, it was a bad experience. I won't work with them again. read more

I had several people out to address the problem with my patio doors (we had a water leak) and the project was too small or two big and no one could/would help us. Shirey was professional, worked hard and the result was beautiful. Michael was who worked with us and I'd recommend him to anyone. I felt like cared for the project like it was his own home. I usually hate to write negative reviews, but felt compelled to do so to prevent someone from experiencing what we did. We were looking for an estimate to do some repairs around our home. We met these folks at a home show and they seemed pretty reputable and knowledgeable and were a member of the Master Builders Association. I called their office and was told it would be $180 for an on-site estimate. If we chose to go with them, we'd get a $90 credit on our service. We had someone come out, they charged us $180 and gave us an estimate with no costs. When we did receive our written estimate (which I had to call the office to get), there were additional fees that the gentleman did not give us verbally on site. I would have hoped that if a company charges $180 for an on-site estimate that it would be a little more professional. To add to this, the gentleman who showed up was a different person than who they said would be coming out AND he was late. Save your money and go with another company that can get the estimates done right and does not charge an on-site estimate fee. We found another company, Westhill, Inc, which did not charge an on-site estimate fee and presented us with a professional proposal. Not only that but Kris from Westhill Inc Design and Build took the time to explain the different solutions and didn't just tell us about the problems we had. Our home was burglarized for the second time in less than a month. The first time we secured the broken door ourselves, but this time the door frame was damaged and we knew we didn't have the skills to repair it. I googled a list of handyman companies; the first three didn't even answer the phone. Then I called Shirey's. The dispatcher was very nice and was able to get Mike out to our house the same day. He did a fantastic job securing the door. Since they charge in hour increments, he asked if we had any other jobs for him since we were over the 1 hour mark. He re-caulked our sink, which we've been meaning to take care of for a while. We would not hesitate to call Shirey's again. We were looking for someone to install 7 IKEA curtain poles in a new house we just bought. We found SHIREY on angie's list. The reviews said they were a bit pricy, but we decided that good quality is worth a bit more. Well, at least we got the pricy bit right! :( The estimation for this "project" was two hours - done over the phone. When the guy appeared in our house, we showed him all the poles to be hanged and we also asked him to hang two toilet paper hangers - that needed to be screwed into a wooden cabinet - no drilling. The guy started to work without any comments. After two hours, when only one and a half curtain poles up, we started to feel that something was wrong. The entire "project" took him 5 (yes FIVE) hours to finish and the cost was near $500. Let me just clarify that this "project" involved 16 holes drilled and about 4 more screws - 5 hours of work. We asked SHIREY to send one of their other employees just to see if this "project" warrants a 5 hours' work. They refused, calming that "yeah, 7 curtain poles and two toilet hangers is a five hour job." So, if you have some extra money and a lot of free time, by all means, call them up. I contracted for repairs on my barn roof. I expected shingle replacement, plywood replacement and rotten wood removed and replaced. I was charged for tools and two trips to Lowes. I had discussed the planned work and sent photos. The work contracted was not done, and the work done was poor. The shingles were left hanging over the ends of the roof where the wind would catch them and rip them off. He used half a package of shingles and a 3X3 section of plywood and charged me for 8 hours of work. I complained and the bill was reduced for the tools and one hour of work. At $100 an hour I expected experienced roofer service not a handyman with a hammer. The manager agreed there were miscommunications and should have been delayed until I could be present, but not further offer of reduction of the bill. I don't mind paying for services, but this was unacceptable.... Beware! read more

Horrible! Do not use this company! I was out of town and needed some work done on a condo that I bought in Renton to get ready for tenants. I trusted my realtor for the referral so didn't look at their reviews and wish I had. A few things on my list were fixing a leaking toilet ( just needed a gasket), calking around the tile counter and backsplash in the kitchen, replacing one standard closet door, and tightening the bolts under the kitchen sink so it wouldn't move around. They bought a new toilet, bought two new closet doors, used unmatching color caulking in the kitchen, replaced the whole kitchen sink faucet and marked everything up by at least 45% plus charged me $100hr. I couldn't believe the bill when I received it and they wouldn't give me any receipts or manuals for the products bought. I would NEVER use them again. read more

The best way to describe thier business model is fradulent. They charged 132% more than the bid and it was a simple residing job. The work was done at a snails pace, they bill hourly, and when we were given a bill it just showed the total number of hours with no detail. The worker was not working for us anywhere near the hours billed and when I asked the owner for details she refused to provide it. We were significantly overcharged for materials. For example we were charged $130 for cedar siding which Lowes sells for $68 full retail. the same for the 8 trim boards that they charged me $216 for that also sell at lowes for $130. Once again I asked for reciepts and was refused. I refused to pay them and now we are going to court. Lastly, when the fellow was done he offered an Angies list form to fill out and told us that he was instructed to only offer the form to clients that were happy, but he didn't agree with that policy. I strongly reccomend considering another contractor if you need work done. read more
