I had a mixed experience at this office. They seem to be one of the only offices in the Boston area that does allergy injections, so that is a plus. Dr. Wong himself is very kind and seemed to be very informed on recent updates in the allergy world. He pays close attention to what you tell him and does a thorough examination. He noticed something that my former allergist didn't. However, to echo some others on this forum, some of his staff is not professional or particularly friendly. The front desk person tends to be welcoming enough (though not a great communicator and (perhaps unintentionally) impolite at times), but the two nurses(?) or technicians who administer the shots are not friendly. One of them (the younger one) is just neutral, but the other one is irritable and unpleasant to interact with. The longer you come in, the less unwelcoming they become, but that's certainly a low bar to set. More importantly, they really don't know what they're doing. They can administer shots, but that's about it. Compared to the other allergist I've been to, their knowledge and expertise was severely lacking. They would not inform you of important updates such as serum expiration or changes in shot timing, and multiple times I found them reading my papers, confused (an actual quote from one of them: "I don't understand this at all"--not something you usually want to hear from your healthcare provider). When there was something amiss (such as coming in a week early because they didn't inform you that you were now up to every 4 weeks) they would blame you and act as if you were silly for not knowing what they should have told you. They also don't bother making sure you stay to check your shots after 30 minutes as is the standard. I often had Alma (the front desk person) check my shots as the nurse would see me and actually disappear to the back room to avoid doing extra work. Also, their whole system seems to be still on paper, which makes the office run extremely slowly (again, in comparison to the other allergist I've been to). Important note for future patients: the allergy shot hours are very limited, and they shortened them further at some point in the past year or so. They also only run them during the work day and work week (Tues Thurs) and take an hour and a half lunch break from 11:30 to 1. Anyway, the overall vibe of the office is not UNpleasant, but not pleasant. The quality of care is okay. If you have a different office closer, I would look into going there, but this isn't a bad option. read more

Beware. If I could give zero stars I would. I have a history of anaphylaxis and saw that my epipens would be expiring at the end of the month. I requested a refill but was told via voicemail that the doctor would not fill it. When I called the office I was told I must have an appointment before they would fill the prescription. Next available appointment was 3 months later. It is truly beyond my understanding how a physician can deny a patient a life saving medication that they are supposed to carry at all times. Best Allergist in Boston! My experience with intake appointment was incredible. We did allergy testing (for which there was 5 minute wait time), and then I saw the doctor for nearly 2 hours (for which there was 10 minute wait time after allergy test was completed). He spent the time going through with me in **gory detail** every illness or sickness or ailment I've ever had in my life. I've never met a doctor so through. He performed a routine medical exam and then we went over treatment options. I left feeling like I received amazing care, and hopeful that the treatment will help! read more

After reading pretty good reviews here on Yelp, I decided to give Dr. Wong a shot at being my new Asthma/Allergy doc. Bad idea for SO many reasons. I walked in and immediately thought I was in the wrong place. The office itself is stuffy and SO dusty. Did I mention I came here to FIX my allergies? The waiting chairs are clearly from 198-before I was born. The decor I can deal with... having outdated instruments?!? Not for a $1300 appointment, no way. They didn't even have disposable mouthpieces for the sample inhaler that they use when they give you the respiratory test. Nor do they have a separate room for different patients. I sat there awkwardly getting poked for a skin allergy test while a very old man sat 2 feet away from me wheezing into the same machine I would soon be forced upon. That can't be sanitary. To take the tester inhaler, the nurse held the thing a couple of inches away from my mouth and sprayed it into the air. Now I know I started taking inhalers when I was 5 but even then, I knew that wasn't the way to do it... Dr. Wong... maybe spring for some disposable, sanitary equipment with my $1300 cash?? My final gripe, the main reason I went there: food allergies. I hadn't been tested for about 7 years so I figured I would give it another shot and see if I was still allergic to the 12 things I've been avoiding for almost a decade. Got the skin test and was cleared on ALL 12 foods. Psyched, right?? Best day ever! Time to eat some shrimp!!! Luckily, I started lightly and dove into one of the items that don't instantly close my throat. On Christmas. Aaaaand FAIL. Instant allergic reaction. Sorry family, you have to look at Hitch-Jenn ruining your next year of family Christmas photos. So your painful allergy test was horribly and potentially deathly inaccurate, your asthma testing is outdated and inaccurate, your office is making my eyes itch, and this whole thing took over 4 hours and $1300. All that and you, Dr. Wong, could barely speak to me during the entire appointment. When you did, you told me things like "vaccuum a lot at home" and "don't be near pets you're allergic to," without once looking up from his lunch (again... kinda awkward, dude). I think I could have given myself a better check-up and bought myself a sick purse instead of your boat payment. read more

Since my original review, below, I want to note that the staff at this office have improved, including G. It's been a much better experience and a pleasure to receive care here. **************************************** 5/2018 [3 stars] Dr. Wong, his nurse practitioners, and nurses have given me terrific care. I wish I can say the same for some of his office and tech staff in Wellesley, particularly G. (not Gyverna, who is lovely) and a relatively new woman whose name I didn't get (there have been a few new staff recently, so I don't know if she's still there). I have been routinely ignored, received curt answers to my questions, and feel that I'm being tolerated, at best -- experiences I haven't had with the staff of my other docs. No patient should feel like an inconvenience or annoyance, particularly those who are pleasant and undemanding. Apart from a couple of office staff (the young man who's occasionally there is great), they just don't seem to understand how to relate to patients in terms of what patients need and in terms of basic etiquette. In addition to this, I've had trouble reaching the office at times, received no return phone calls (G's curt response to this was that I should have followed up, which I was actually doing), and experienced scheduling errors. The staff have also given me erroneous instructions regarding how I should prepare for my appointments (which could have affected whether my appointment could even proceed). One staff member was unconcerned about patient confusion with the automated appointment system (texting a confirmation reply does nothing -- a problem if you want to cancel and you're unaware of this). It can take a lot of unnecessary time and effort to work with his staff. All this seems pretty basic and undermines the good care that Dr. Wong gives. I have also seen patients left in the waiting area without consideration or updates. Seeing an allergist requires periods of waiting; however, many office staff do nothing to help patients understand this and simply ignore them until patient frustration sets in. Some staff are unsympathetic to patient needs and seem to be more concerned about getting office work done than paying attention to patients. On many occasions, I have been ignored at the reception desk by the same couple of staff while they continue typing on the computer or chat with one another. This is too bad, since Dr. Wong provides expert care: he's thorough, communicates clearly, and spends time to get to know the patient in order to provide sound recommendations for treatments and lifestyle changes. (That he has responded to the Yelp reviews below demonstrates his concern and diligence.) My health has been transformed under his care and I have my life back. Unfortunately, this has required much patience with his front office and enduring the incompetence, carelessness, and inconsideration of some staff members. I hope the newest staff don't pick up the work styles of some of the other staff and can help turn the office over with more pleasant attitudes and politeness. read more

**Update at bottom** I was booked to see Dr. Wong at the Boston location. Since it was such an upsetting experience, I will keep this brief. Upon scheduling my appointment and registering with staff, my insurance was confirmed over the phone and she took my id number. They mailed me paperwork and I was all set. I get to the appointment and the staff incredulously doubt my insurance. I recounted my phone call and they say they will run my info. They then announce to me that yes, in fact, they do not take my insurance. I was totally speechless. And I did not understand what they were saying. Sidebar- they even threw in something about me only having vision and dental...and I don't have a clue as to what that is about as I have neither. Anyway, they offered no real or sincere apology and had nothing to say each time I mentioned my insurance being confirmed over the phone. I realize insurance is tricky, but if staff doesn't know what they are talking about, perhaps they shouldn't confirm with a patient. This was an appointment I really needed and it required me to be off allergy meds prior to. So this was an extremely frustrating and senseless experience. To the office: take responsibility and accountability...also, properly apologize and troubleshoot. To future patients: don't take the staff at their word....and as the staff is the first impression of any office/doctor and speaks volumes of the office- I judge them highly, so don't bother booking with this office/doctor. I would like to also review them on Zoc Doc, but they "cancelled" my appointment and the app won't let me review. However, I did reach out to Zoc Doc and they were very apologetic and criticized the office as doctors and staff are required to provide guaranteed info via Zoc Doc's app. Zoc Doc also said they would be reaching out to them. This is pertinent as I obtained info on Dr. Wong via Zoc Doc and they list him as taking my insurance (and still says that as of today). So I already had that plus a referral from my PCP. Actually being confirmed by his office prior to my appointment is what makes this so bizarre...to then arrive for the appointment only to be turned away. **I am not sure how to respond to Dr. Wong's comment on my review, so this is the best way I can. 1) It should be made very clear that when Dr. Wong cites the process of his staff asking about subgroup insurance, that the fault still lies with his staff. It was apparently their lack of knowledge/info that caused this issue. I did my part in reporting my info. Dr Wong's comment on my review is somewhat vague in where the blame lies. 2) This response does not explain or excuse the incorrect info given on Zoc Doc (or from Dr. Wong's staff as explained above in number 1). And as I've checked again just now, it still says you accept my insurance and subgroup. That fault lies with your office. 3) Dr. Wong: you really shouldn't post personally identifying info about someone's coverage. In my review, I never named my supports. read more

I have severe food/pollen allergies and I feel very taken care of at this office. My first visit I spent over 2 hours here getting tests done/talking to Dr. Wong. He types up everything as he tells it to you (which is a bit weird) and then prints it out and gives it to you/sends a copy to your PCP. Also, he always does a physical so if you are feeling sick, you could always get antibiotics here also! He says out loud what he thinks as he examines you which is kind of funny and scary! I do have three reasons why I don't give Dr. Wong five stars but otherwise he totally deserves it. That may seem like a lot of reasons but he really is a great and thorough doctor and deserves your respect and admiration. Heck, even Boston magazine recognized him as one of Boston's best! My three reasons are: 1) Every time I leave here I have a few more prescriptions for things that don't actually help but do involve a large co-pay and 2) His focus seems to be asthma and it stumps him that I am not severely asthmatic and 3) He keeps pushing these allergy shots on me and I simply don't want them. If you need an allergist, I recommend Dr. Wong. He is associated with MGH so you have to register with MGH first. He has his office practice (this address) and then also is at MGH one day a week. read more

Dr. Wong spent about 45 minutes with me after I spent about an hour with his assistant getting allergy tests. He asked thorough questions, spoke very quickly, typed up notes while we were speaking and then printed them out at the end. All great stuff! What annoys me is two things: 1.) I don't feel any better - the medications he suggested didn't help me at all 2.) My bill for this ONE appointment was $1940.00 -ridiculous!! I have a follow-up appointment but I'm going to have to cancel. I can't afford his rates - I hope he enjoys the boat I mist be paying for!! read more

Dr. Wong has truly changed my life! He is the most patient, warm, and thorough Dr. I have ever seen. I have always gone to all Boston doctors my entire life, and he is simply the best. I have had sinus problems my entire life and Dr. Wong has guided me through the last two years with different steps/less medication and nasal irrigation daily. I feel like a new person. I was very ill with a number of asthma complications. I was unable to climb the stairs at Kendal Station without having to stop and rest. Dr. Wong was never able to identify what was wrong with me, or how to fix the issue. He is always running late. I often have to wait for hours in the waiting room as the doctor is never ready for my appointment. He generally spends most of the time I am in the office with him looking back over the case notes as he has obviously not prepared before hand (no doubt because he is always running late). Impossible to get ahold of anyone on the phone. Last time I was on hold for 15 minutes before I was told a nurse practitioner would call me back later (which of course never happened). read more

In reading past reviews, a number of complaints resonate with my own recent experience in Dr. Wong's office. Many involve communication, which is quite poor throughout the patient experience. From calls that go to an answering service rather than an office manager, to being "greeted" by tired staff who push forms at you, the treatment by Wong's staff is poor. The tech explained nothing to me, was bored and disinterested, and simply wanted to get out of work. She was not only uncommunicative but her poor attitude raised questions about her competence. "You'll talk about that with the Doctor" was all I heard, in response to my questions, during 30+ needle pricks in over an hour. In sitting with Dr. Wong, he is preoccupied with typing rather than making eye contact and communicating effectively with his patient. His spoken English is poor. He talks at you, rather than speaks with you. He often interrupts. He doesn't listen well. After more than 2 long hours in his offices, and after trying to make myself heard and understood by him, unsuccessfully, I just gave up. I left without a solution. I heard "allergy symptoms can be caused by many things" too many times. I will not return. Dr. Wong, I suggest you pay greater attention to managing your staff. Have someone greet and explain to your patients what will happen to them. Speak to your patients -- type later. You may have to see one less patient, but the fees you forego will be paid back in repeat patients. Consider taking a communications course for physicians. Slow down and listen. Focus on, and listen to, your patient. read more

Referred by my MEEI Opthalmologist for a very specific problem I have been having for the past 5 months dealing with some kind of suture reaction. I am 68 years old and spent 40 years as a health care provider in the Harvard teaching community. Went to Boston office. Got a call while I was ALREADY ON THE TRAIN telling me he was double booked at 9:00 and could I come in at 10 instead? This was at about 8:30. When I got there, receptionist (20 something Latina) was very blase. She seemed surprised that I did not already have the huge stack of forms filled out, but NO ONE SENT ME ANYTHING. Hung around, filled out endless and redundant questionnaires. Mostly pointless because I had ALREADY been worked up for environment allergies and have learned to avoid them over a lifetime. I was here for a SPECIFIC PROBLEM. When the Tech called me in, she seemed surprised that no one had told me not to take any antihistamines for A WEEK, but no one had. Truth be told, this Tech (or Nurse?) was the only one in this office that treated me in a professional and compassionate manner and I thank her. When Dr. Wong finally appeared, he seemed to have very little interest in what I had to say or why I was there. He was only interested in what he had to say and what he wanted to do, He barely made eye contact. When I showed him some of my prior test results ( which I KNOW are 100% accurate) he dismissed them as old and useless. He had no interest in even looking at the problem I had come to have looked at. Basically told me to do what he wanted or leave. So I left. RUDE & CONDESCENDING. Waste of 3 hours and a $45 co-pay. read more

This has been a painful painful experience for me. The service itself was fine - nothing amazing. I was pricked hardly a number of times which impacted the results - but that's alright because I don't expect each prick to be perfect. I was a bit surprised by the office layout - there's a huge desk between the doctor and patient and there were times when I could hardly hear what was being said to me. Dr. Wong did give me a lot of time, but I just didn't feel like I was cared for. But the reason I'm leaving is because dealing with the administrative is a nightmare. I had to call 4 times to make a single payment - nothing is available online, the billing person is different from the reception person and only comes on specific days. You have to work around their schedule rather than the other way around. I got so frustrated after a bunch of runarounds that I decided to move my records to another hospital. Again, I've called 4 times to make this happen. Each time they tell me to call back after 15 mins when the office opens. Then after making me wait for 20 mins on the line on my fourth attempt, I was told that the office will open on Monday and to call back then. Without waiting for me to respond, they just hung up. In this day and age when care is all about the patient experience, I have no idea how they can get away with this. It's not even excellent care that you'd be ok with dealing with this. I cannot wait to get my records transferred and be done with this place. It was a huge mistake and I hope I get out of it asap. read more

Dr. Wong has been my allergist for several years and he has never been anything but excellent. When I first came to see him, I was suffering from severe seasonal allergies along with annoying food allergies. He was able to identify what was triggering my reactions and provided the proper care so that my life hasn't been taken over by sneezing/itchy eyes/chronic runny nose/etc. While it's true that sometimes you have to wait a little longer to see him, his patients are willing because Dr. Wong is so thorough. He doesn't just focus on one little thing and send you on your way, he truly takes the time to go over all of your problems and answer any questions. It's hard to find that kind of time commitment these days! I really like the fact that he gives me and my PCP a copy of what happened during the appointment. It definitely helps me keep track of everything. I always feel well-taken care of after I leave. Definitely Boston's best! read more

Dr. Wong was awesome! He thoroughly examined my daughter, took his time going over her history and performed several in office tests. He diagnosed her in his office and left us with recommendations going forward. He was very thorough and took absolute care in my daughter as a person. We left with a copy of the letter he was mailing to her pediatrician. As uncomfortable as an allergist can be, this appointment felt very therapeutic and reassuring. So many times patients leave with more questions than when they entered. Here that was not the case. Job well done, Dr. Wong! read more

I highly recommend this practice. I had been getting sick for years without any idea of why, and they figured it out. It has greatly improved my life, as my flares are now properly treated, and I am missing much less work over time. The first time it flared years ago, I missed a month of work. We then got it down to 2 weeks of work missed, and the last time was only a few days. The appointments will take a while, as it is a very thorough team. Dr. Wong listened to all of my history upon admission to his practice, and figured out many of my problems. I can not say enough about the nurse practitioner Tricia Phan either. She always finds time to see me when I am sick, and is very caring. After seeing her, Dr. Wong always comes in and hears her current (usually illness related) plan. It is good to have two heads working together for you. Lastly, the receptionist was very helpful in dealing with my insurance. As I started at the practice I thought I had a higher copay, and paid it a few times. She didn't think it sounded right and contacted my insurance company. As a result, I paid less from then on. I always see everyone at the Boston office, but I am sure Wellsley is great as well. Simply put, if you are sick and in need of help, this office will help you. They are smart, competent, and caring. Dr. Wong is truly more than just your average allergy Doctor. Not only has Dr. Wong treated me for my sever case of seasonal allergies but at one point I had a intense case of chronic hives. IT WAS horrible! I actually ended up going into anaphylactic shock one night. Thank fully I had already started seeking treatment from Dr. Wong and as a precaution he prescribed an EpiPen. Low and be hold I had to administer that sucker in the middle of the night at 3am. HOLY MOTHER OF PERL! It was the strangest thing I have ever had to go through. The point is that Dr. Wong ended up meeting me at the hospital (MGH) emergency room at 8am. We never did find the root cause of the hives (but this is extremely common with hives) but Dr. Wong stuck with me and never gave up. I recommend Dr. Wong office to everyone. Please people, lets not have every one become a patient of Dr. Wong, this might cause trouble in my ability to make appointments and hinder my ability to get my nasal spray or Zytec! read more

Symptoms, itchy watery eyes, sinus blockage or runny nose sometimes both, go figure. Head Aches,Cough to the point of having a raspy voice and sore throat. Sneezing fit, hanging onto the grocery cart. People asked if I was ok. Dr Wong recommended by Dr Grey. picked and picked at my arms, nothing , not one result. Reviewed with Dr Wong all my symptoms. He said it was a complicated case. Resulted in , I have no allergies that they can see, but to continue to due what I have been doing, take medication, Allegra, Phlosnase, and sinus flush if it makes me feel better. Over $1000.00 gone. Good to know I have no allergies! Wonder what I do have? read more

The most important thing to know is to go elsewhere for care. I found myself seeing an NP that I did not like and did not feel was very professional. Supposedly you can see either him or her, but it was made clear to me that seeing him after 1 visit is discouraged. I tried it and he had a meltdown. Anyway I asked Wong if I saw her would he be stopping in and he said he always did. I said is she paid the same as you for the visit he said yes. So I saw her and at the end I said "where is Wong" and the NP said oh that's not necessary. To me it was clearly the old bait and switch tactic. That sent me to the internet to see what folks had to say. For every negative comment Wong had a pat response. He could take time to do that but could not spend 2 minutes during my visit despite the fact that I asked for him. That was same day the secretary came to work in a wrinkled top and dungarees with both knees completely ripped out. Then the next time I went for an allergy shot and in the 3 1/2ft space allotted for that I stood there in my bra when I bumped into a woman using the office computer. (I knew I should have worn a better bra that day) She says oh don't mind me I am here with my husband who is a patient. I said you mean you don't work here. She said no but I did up until a few years ago. So she can't wait to get home or use the public library I thought. Then I thought my God whose network is she on and can she look up patient records. I was horrified. To me this whole practice is about his seeing how many awards he can get and how many times he can ring the cash register. You are a cash cow and not a patient. Outstanding allergist. I have so many allergies that another doctor couldn't properly diagnose me. Then I went to see Dr. Wong and still the tests were hard to decipher. Essentially, I had so many reactions to the arm patch tests that they all ran into each other. Anyway, Dr. Wong figured it out and was completely dedicated to alleviating my symptoms and helping me breathe more easily. However, be prepared to spend several hours on your first visit. Some posters here said they were there for 2 hours. I was there for 4. The in depth analysis was worth it but you should know that up front. read more

I have just begun treatment with Dr. Johnson Wong. He is clearly an extremely knowledgeable, true "expert".Because my potential situation is somewhat rare -"Insect Bite Hypersensitivity"(IBHS) I've had to endure many tests, exams with 3 derms ( and derm NP), Gen Practnr., Infectious Disease specialists - all to no avail. None of them could nail it and I'm still dealing with this agonizing skin affliction. Dr. Wong is thorough, concise, very direct and yes, he does talk to you while typing out his evaluation, assessment, treatment recommendations etc...I advise new patients not to come to Dr. Wong with any theories unless you have hard data, test results, a recent, confirmed diagnosis - and even then, he'll absorb and factor prior results/diagnosis' but won't just "assume" anything until he's done his own medical/environment/family history and a direct examination. He spends the time, he really exudes such knowledge and clarity that your comfort/confidence level will go up ( esp. if you've been shuffled around by docs w/out answers ) that he's the guy who can arrive at "the" diagnosis/remedy. Note: You will be happier if you're one to appreciate very direct, no nonsense straight talk. He doesn't mix words and will not hesitate to counter any"ideas/opinions" - yours or others - unless there's hard data. Broad "theories" won't be beneficial and he'll quickly refocus on core facts and necessary tests moving forward etc...this is rare in my recent experience dealing with a rare/unique medical issue. I anticipate his approach and superb skills/knowledge will be the key talent I've been needing for some time. You should be prepared to provide - ideally in advance - ALL relevant/prior med records, a detailed environmental and family history in order to truly leverage his expertise ( and his time with he's quite generous - a rarity for sure ) If you're approach is to table /chat theories and "what-if's" you may be better off seeing someone else initially to review all of your general ideas about what's been happening and have someone filter out and synthesize the key info. Wong goes right to the facts and concrete presentation/results. Not that he is rigid - just grounded and pragmatic. And, my take, albeit brief with just one appt., is that he's definitely the expert you need when the stakes are high,your condition remains a mystery ( and therefore w/out clear remedies/actions ) AND you're willing to turn over the wheel and enable your doctor to steer the course, follow recommendations closely etc...you will assuredly be in excellent hands. He's a true professional but more importantly just a true "specialist" with well rounded knowledge of all applicable areas tied to asthma and allergies and more. I felt almost immediately after meeting Dr.Wong that I could safely and confidently hand over the wheel and that Dr. Wong will get to the bottom of my affliction,arrive at clear answers and deliver the tailored medical care I've been tirelessly seeking for over a year. I recommend him highly - especially for complex, undiagnosed scenarios.My only hesitation in awarding a fifth star is that I'm only one appt. into the process with Dr.Wong. I have ended my appointments with Dr. Wong and will never make another appointment. I had been seeing him for more than 10 years due to allergies and asthma. Last June I developed a persistent cough for which Dr. Wong tried several types of medicines - none of them worked. Shortly thereafter I developed hoarseness and shortness of breath. In the next appointment later in the summer after I told him I was losing my voice, my husband, who attended the meeting, suggested taking a look inside the throat with a medical device. Dr. Wong said it was necessary and to continue with my inhalations. A week later I lost the voice almost completely and went to Waltham Urgent Care. They referred me to Dr. Aliphas at Newton-Wellesley who placed a tube/camera and diagnosed a fungal infection in my voice-box. He also ordered a chest x-ray that day. The x-ray showed pleural effusion (fluid) in my lung, which set off orders by Dr. Kumar (MGH West) for chest and abdominal CT scans. The final diagnosis was metastatic ovarian cancer. I asked my oncologist what would have happened if I continued only to try the asthma medications as prescribed by Dr. Wong. The oncologist (MGH Boston) stated the disease would have likely killed me in less than three months. Now, I cannot blame Dr. Wong for my disease, as it is so silent until advanced; but if more aggressive action at an earlier date had occurred, it is reasonable to assume earlier chemotherapy would give me a better survival prognosis. The cough (which was malignant) I mentioned earlier never got better under Dr. Wong's care, and improved only after thoracentesis (fluid removal) and chemotherapy I have been receiving since early October.
