Brilliant Christmas Party! Our firm held our annual Christmas Party at Johnsons Steakhouse for 130 people. The food was excellent. It was if our plates were made specifically for every person and every dish was great. We've been to other venues and the food seemed as if if came from a buffet table in the back as mass cooked food. I had the Beef Wellington and it was one of the best I've had since being in the UK for 7 years. They had a really good holiday vegan menu on top of the vegetarian options. They also were able to cater to several allergies in our party to include dairy, nuts, gluten free, onions, seafood, and honey. read more

It pains me to write such a negative review of a business I once did nothing but support and recommend to people. To cut a very long story short; my partner and I were due to have our wedding reception here. We met with Kirsty and Will (head chef) and had a lengthy meeting to discuss all details and pricing. We were really happy with everything and wanted to proceed with booking and was told we would receive a formal quote via email. I emailed a couple of times to chase the quote and was apologised to for the delay and assured it would be coming. As weeks became months and cautious of being able to secure a date with both our local church and Johnson's we were keen to have something booked - I decided to call Johnson's. Something which turned out to be a massive mistake. I won't go into too much detail but the owner, Tracey Johnson was absolutely disgusting over the phone and had me in tears, somewhat to her enjoyment it seemed. To highlight a few choice phrases "I've got bigger things to worry about than your wedding" "We don't even do weddings" "We haven't agreed anything with you so how can you say you want to book here" "Our new manager was useless, couldn't do the job, had to sack him" And the icing on the cake "find somewhere else" To add insult to injury, the new manager called me later that evening and asked me if my partner and I would still like our wedding at their venue. I told him I would not even consider it unless I received a personal apology from Tracey for the way I was dealt with and spoken to for simply calling and asking when I am likely to receive a quote in writing. Weeks have passed now, months even and I've never heard from Tracey. So here I am, telling my story in very short detail. I am absolutely heartbroken to know that this is the type of person who's business I have supported from day one. Recommending them endlessly, visiting their zoological gardens (donating every time), buying Christmas and birthday gifts from their farm shop, meat from their butchers as well as dining in their tea room and steakhouse. I will never, ever support this business again and would ask others to seriously reconsider having any type of event here. Edited to say: I cannot commend Kirsty and Will highly enough. I went to Johnsons every time I visited friends in Upwood. It's a great day out and always new and different because of the animals. One day you might come face to face with an ostrich, and the next a turkey might run across your path. We usually stopped in for afternoon tea, or at least cream tea with a warm scone. Butchers. Tea room. Crocodile farm. Everything you need for a family trip out - Johnsons of Old Hurst is a gem of a place. The eating area could do with a bit of work; staff are often running around like the headless chickens found in the butchers, unable to cope with both cleaning and serving. However, I pity them more than they make me angry as I understand their pain and don't see how they could cope as it's always busy! Due to the family-friendly nature of Johnsons, don't be surprised about children running all over the place and crying babies. Food is always of a good standard once you get it; their breakfasts are worth writing home about and everything tastes local and fresh. Wander through the grounds and you can see where your food comes from. Head out the back of the tea room and spy on the crocodiles kept on the grounds - a great tourism booster for this part of the countryside. Children's parties come in their droves to have a peek. Peacocks roam the grounds, making for some dodgy driving (they don't seem too bothered by cars!) and there are an array of animals across the rest of the fields. Inside the farm shop, you can buy tonnes of meaty goodies. The sausages are delicious, our Christmas beef always comes from here, and the maple cured bacon is out of this world. Staff are knowledgeable and quick to get your order weighed/packaged - this is one of the only places where all butchery is done on site, so you're guaranteed that these folks are very hands on. Have a nosey in the back if you're curious! There's also a range of baked goods, some clothing, and endless jars of rubs and chutneys to take home so you can relive your farm experience. My friend came to stay last weekend and we were not quite sure what to do and where to go, the weather was average, it was aabout 11.30am (after rugby), we both fancied some breakfast and fresh air (both feeling a little tender from the night before) and we decided to try Johnsons of Old Hurst, my Housemates' Girlfriend works there and she often brings us left over cake over, and it's delicious, so I knew food wise we were not to be disappointed! This review is based on my recent attendance to their Christmas Spirit event on Saturday 17th December. It was without a doubt the worst planned and executed event I have ever been too. Very poor lighting around the site so you ended up just walking through piles of mud, miserable staff on at the event attractions, very poorly explained attractions with regards to the so called magical train ride, which we queued for over half an hour in the cold with our 2 year old daughter so she could go and see Santa, the train takes you round the corner and drops you off where you are told to join the back of another long queue in the cold to visit Santa. Having spoken to several unhappy parents with cold and upset children I decided to go and speak with someone in charge. I was advised to speak to Andrew Johnson. I found him and started to explain why I was unhappy and that I would like a refund. Within a few seconds another lady came over to find out what the problem was and Mr Johnson said to her "get this guy out of my way before I hit him". UNBELIEVABLE!!! I was shocked and appalled at the fact I was being threatened with violence and plan to make sure everyone hears about this person. I WAS a regular visitor to their cafe and butchers, but after this experience I will NEVER be spending another penny with Johnson's of Oldhurst. read more

Really quite outstanding as a day out with or without kids; and as a lunch venue; and as a butchers and local shop. A working farm with it's own butchers, the farmyard has been developed to include a fantastic play park (complete with miniature tractors for a variety of ages), a crocodile enclosure and a licensed restaurant. As long as you can mentally disassociate the piglets running amok in the barn with the sausage baguettes, the only gripe is that they don't open on Sundays. read more
