Hoops tanks and heroes The Johnston War Memorial Park is a lovely park that was created in 1946. It started out as just a memorial for war veterans but has continue to grow over the years. It still has a lot of cool displays like a real M-60 tank, a big ol' 105 mm howitzer and lots of touching and poignant walls and monuments to men and women that have lost their lives serving this country but has also added more recreational activities. A swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball area and very well maintained baseball and softball fields are in the park as well as a nice one mile walking trail around the perimeter. There is also a nice little pond, a hill for sledding in the winter and lots of benches and picnic areas. A very cool and fun park to either honor the past or enjoy the present.

Beautiful park with a walking path around the pond. Places for picnics and a playground. There's even a walkway out to an island. No dogs allowed. Bring a picnic and blanket and enjoy a beautiful sunny day!

As someone who joshingly regards people from Johnston as "the enemy", I find myself here quite a bit. The ducks and geese poop a lot around the walking path, but they're ducks and geese - that's what they do. On no less than three occasions I have witnessed wanna be gangsters yelling profanities into their flip phones about contracts or vigs or Cadillacs. But it's Johnston and that goes with the territory. Nice place to sit in your car and relax (without fear of a strange, mustached dude trying to hop in to your front seat to "help").

Beautiful park, different thing to do with the family. Basketball court, multiple baseball fields, and great place to just walk.

I wouldn't give it five stars but. The geese make a mess of this place. It's great for the kids

They don't allow dogs which is extremely disappointing. I can see not on the baseball fields, but why would they not be allowed elsewhere?

I enjoy the walking…read morepaths - there are paved paths around the playgrounds, the Senior Center, and by the memorials, and I especially like the wooded cross country paths. For the kids, there are two playgrounds - one for toddlers and one for older kids. It's really nice that the toddler playground is fenced to protect the children from cars. There is also a splash pad during the summer and children really seem to love this new addition to the park. For sports fans, there are soccer fields, tennis courts, a baseball field and a basketball court. Recently a disc golf course was added as well. The park is really pretty in the spring with numerous flowering trees, and it is well maintained. There are bathrooms, plenty of parking areas, a snack bar that is often open during sporting events, and the Smithfield Senior Center is in Deerfield Park as well. The memorials at Deerfield are beautiful and are definitely worth a stop while visiting the park. The Veteran's memorial is lovely and there is a very touching memorial to Smithfield young people who have passed on. Lots of benches to relax on, a gazebo, and many shaded places. There's also a small sledding hill for young children, and a larger hill for those who are more adventurous. Deerfield is also used for summer outdoor concerts, food truck nights and the Smithfield 4th of July fireworks. Love this park!

I bring a handful of almonds because I heard peanuts were no good for squirrels. Occasionally a blue Jay will follow you flying from tree to tree. You can walk along the lake for a bit if your feet prefer softer ground but then you have to get back on the tar again. You might see a couple of beautiful swans, geese and ducks. But don't feed them bread. A bag of defrosted mixed vegetables is okay. There are a few benches along the way. There are no potty facilities so go before you go. I'm wondering if taking my kayak would be worthwhile because it's such a small lake. It really should be called a pond. It is rather cute and I wish it had a bench close to the parking lot so I can bring my guitar and not disturb the neighbors. It is also a neighborhood and the people living there keep it nice.

This led me to pay close attention to what other animals were around. I came across a couple birds, one more mink, and a lot of Canada geese, some of which were chilling on a house's lawn. They were fearless and started coming towards me but stopped about 6 feet away. The loop around the body of water is about half a mile so it makes for a perfect casual stroll; a lot of people were walking their dog, talking on the phone, or on a run. Two sides of this park has houses, and it seems like people respect the neighbor's privacy and peace since it was quiet. There's a dock to fish, along with other spots. There's a little library where you can take/drop off books. They have lots of benches along the way and the entire path is paved. There is a parking lot across the park; it seems like it belongs to a school so in the summer it's convenient to park there but it might be a different story during the school year.

I felt my cortisol drop significantly just after a few steps on the trail. At one point, the Providence noise pollution almost disappeared & all I could hear was birds & bugs & wind. Unfortunately it's a seriously confusing smorgasbord of trails. I had to pull up AllTrails a few times, which is borderline embarrassing, considering how small of a park this is. I'm not sure I really followed any of the proper trails, just kinda zigzagged around. I would've felt more at ease if the trails were marked more clearly. Still highly recommend as a great green space. Enjoy!
