It's pretty tiny to be a state park but we are in Rhode Island, the smallest state! There's a nice paved walking path that runs along a lake. In the spring and autumn there are lots of birds and squirrels about doing their business. I like hearing all the different bird calls and watching the swans, geese and ducks on the lake. Apparently one of the swans used to be all on its own and was very nasty - it attacked an innocent baby gosling (not Ryan haha but a baby goose). Anyway, it's a pretty spot to walk and watch nature's drama unfold!

Not the lake I remembered growing up. Awful smell and so, so dirty- litter, broken glass, goose poop and piles and piles of dog poop from ignorant owners. Won't be taking my pup for another walk here. Sad it is such a mess.

There are also a sledding hill, baseball diamonds and a skate park at the base. I come here for the hiking. For being only 10 minutes from downtown providence, it's very impressive. It's small, just shy of 90 acres, but the trail network is fantastic. The views of Providence from the top of the hill and the vista are great. There's a map at the entrance to the park, I usually just do one big loop when I visit. There's a trail map you can print out on the website as well. This is an urban park, so litter can be a problem. Please do your part and bring your trash out with you.

I felt my cortisol drop significantly just after a few steps on the trail. At one point, the Providence noise pollution almost disappeared & all I could hear was birds & bugs & wind. Unfortunately it's a seriously confusing smorgasbord of trails. I had to pull up AllTrails a few times, which is borderline embarrassing, considering how small of a park this is. I'm not sure I really followed any of the proper trails, just kinda zigzagged around. I would've felt more at ease if the trails were marked more clearly. Still highly recommend as a great green space. Enjoy!

Sometimes it's hard to find out what part of the park you're meant to meet someone in since there are so many sections. You can walk along the long beach or try a woodsy hiking trail. The trails on the right of the beach have either steps or a gradual slope to get up to the top of them, and you can look down over a small cliff to see the water below. The trails on the left of the gazebo are beautiful and give you many options, but people ride horses here, so be mindful of the droppings! This park has fantastic sunsets and multiple picnic areas, plus multi Porta potties that are usually in decent condition to use if needed. The bridge is great to look at, but can get crowded with families doing holiday photo shoots in the fall, so I've become wary of coming here since being stuck on one side of the bridge while a family made us wait to cross until they were done with pictures (ugh). I've come here for walks/hikes and even to wade at multiple times of year and always enjoy a beautiful day and peaceful experience here.

The botanical gardens are much more spacious than I remember there are 4 different greenhouses with a wide variety of tropical plants, trees, a kid's play space, and an herb and vegetable garden. They even have a mini koi pond with some huge koi. Everything was decorated for the holidays with multiple christmas trees, several different train sets and poinsettias everywhere. One of the train sets has a model city that is supposed to look like Providence. I love model trains so this was fun to see. I do wish they had made the settings a little bit more detailed and realistic. Overall a very cool place and a nice retreat from the coldness of winter. It's very warm and humid in there so it really does feel like you're somewhere tropical. They have some truly gigantic monsteras, jade trees and elephant ear plants. Definitely inspiring for my home plant collection! I had no idea how huge some of these plants could get under the right conditions. I do wish there were more labels on the plants - we found some interesting trees (a fruit tree that was maybe papaya) but there was no sign to indicate what it was. Check it out - a fun, family friendly spot to go on a winter weekend. And don't forget to visit the goats on the way in!
