A great operation with a wonderful staff. They maintain the security of our future and guard the memory of our past.

For the past 20 plus years, we've had the privilege to access this Air Force Base for business and leisure. We've seen how certain events have changed access eligibility requirements and the upgrading of many facilities. There are several historic buildings and structures dating back to pre-WWII. Some of these buildings have been featured in movies. This Base is huge and is a city in itself..it has its own zip code. Of course, this is a working and fully functioning Air Force Base that services cargo transports, fighter jets, high-profile political aircraft and auxiliary services. There are several communities of town houses that are supported by health services, grocery stores (Commissary) and shopping. Entertainment or recreational activities include theaters, restaurants, dance and dining clubhouses, bowling alleys, tennis courts, beaches and golf courses. I've known some Air Force residents who hardly leave or wander off base out into the Honolulu! Everything is well-maintained and clean. There is pride in community, family and workplace.

As a joint base, there's the Pearl Harbor base and the Hickam base. Must be military or DOD to gain access with CAC card. In addition, military or DOD can allow guests on base. The Pearl Harbor side has a pavilion with 2 sand courts, which is near McDonald on base. The pavilion has shade with tables and chairs with bathroom, outdoor shower (warm water), water fountain (cold water), and a hose to hose yourself or the sand courts. The net is already up on the two sand courts. Also if you want a ref, the court has ref stand to either help in coaching or having a referee. Parking is really close to the sand courts and it is fun to use. The Hickam side has a beach which is in Mamala Bay, which is a beach area with a lifeguard. There's barely any waves and you'll see about 50+ people there on a weekend. Great location to relax, sun bathe, go in the water, hang out with friends as a few things to do at Mamala Bay. Check out "The Lanai" restaurant as they have happy hour items (food and drinks) The base has so many things to do.

This base is absolutely beautiful! It's located literally down the road from the Honolulu National Airport. Like every base it has its own community and the base housing is so nice. They're a bit close together, but they are very nice inside and the backyards are all kind of connected which makes it easier for families to come together. There's also shopping and entertainment on base so you don't have to go far if you don't want to. It has a used car lot on it where people who are moving soon, about to go on deployment, or simply want to sell their car. There's a good chance that you can make a good find there. My friend said a guy was selling one of the jeeps that was used in Jurassic park on that lot right before we got there. You can also come here to visit the USS Arizona Memorial. I suggest making reservations in advance because you may not be able to get in on the same day, and the wait to see whether or not you are able to could take hours.

Naval Station Pearl Harbor Base and Hickam Air Force Base merged in 2010 to become what it is today: JBPHH. It is truly the best base I've ever lived on or near just due to its locality and history. There was so much to see, learn, and do! Check out the ITT Office or read the Great Life Hawaii magazine to sign up for one of the historical tours of the base. Some of my favorite experiences on base were visiting International Navy ships during RIMPAC, seeing Air Force One on the flight line during former President Obama's many visits to Oahu, and attending the Rock The Troops concert hosted by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I had mostly frequented Hickam Commisary (best kept secret!), Pearl Harbor Chapel, Hickam Chapel, Aloha Aina Park (Hickam), Makalapa Clinic, and Hickam Beach. JBPHH is also a fantastic place for a long run or workout outdoors, but they also have two of the nicest Fitness Centers offering great exercise classes. If you're into watching airplanes taking off of the runway, what better way to watch them while standing waist deep in Mamala Bay? The soft, white sand, and the warm, turquoise blue ocean always reminded me to enjoy every minute of this piece of paradise. Aloha!

Great place for a party…read more This is a spacious and beautiful location on the AF side of the base. The facility has a full fridge and working deep sink. There are a couple or outlets if you want to bring a radio or rice cooker ;) And you can't have rice without having some kind of meat. There's two stationary grills on property. The trash is taken out by management when you turn the keys back in and pick up your deposit. I believe the deposit is $250. There are bathrooms in the back. No porta potties thank God. No real flying creatures to stanch your food and plenty of fresh air. You will get the occasional roar of a plane engine since the runway is close by and sometimes you see a naval ship just off the coast heading out or doing maneuvers. Overall five stars. The scenery is beautiful and he can't beat the price. M

YUCK! You can see the skyline of Honolulu and the silhouette of Diamond Head... so horrific! Nearby sail boats gently rock to small waves on the aforementioned pristine azure waters... you do not want to see this! There is no comfortable place to sit and eat. There are only maybe a dozen clean tables from which to choose: some in the shade, some in the sun, and some are under a pavilion to use in the unlikely event it rains during your picnic... Don't take the chance! Today during lunch (well, for the first few minutes) I had to share the peninsula with one other picnicker. Sure he was like 40 yards away, but you shouldn't have to put up with this! And the wind! Today it was so blustery that it threatened to blow my napkin off the table... not once, but TWICE! Oh and it is so noisy... did I mention the sail boats and the waves? Well, they're not silent, ya know! They make this monotonous "lap-lap-lap" sound that might drive you crazy! And you'd be dining only a couple miles from the airport. So as you watch the lumbering jets lift off gracefully into the sky, you can actually hear them. .. It's horrendous! It so far out of the way! It takes minutes and minutes (maybe as many as five) to drive out there from the base proper.... Don't waste your valuable time! So in short, take my advice: Do not put up with ugliness, then uncomfortable conditions, the noisiness, and the long long ride out to Foster Point Peninsula for a picnic lunch! It's just not worth it. But if you do, you'll likely see me there enjoying my picnic lunch; and if you do, feel free to wave. But try to keep your 40 yards separation! ;-)

I got tickets for the USS Arizona memorial online about a month before our visit. They are also released 24 hours in advance for the next day, and the standby line seemed to be efficient the day we were there (a July Tuesday). The cost of the tickets is $2, which is actually just a booking fee. Tickets for the other tours (the battleship, submarine, and aviation museum) may be purchased at the visitors' center. The film that accompanies the USS Arizona tour is separate from your ticket time, so see that before or after getting in line for your reservation. After checking in, you'll hear a short Pearl Harbor history lecture by one of the rangers, then you'll be ferried to the memorial. You don't have to arrange or plan for the ferry outside of your reservation. There's a very tiny gift shop with tons of souvenirs, but it's difficult to navigate with wall-to-wall swarms of other guests. Parking is free, and our Uber there from Waikiki wasn't outrageous. We made the mistake of taking a cab back, though, and that was very expensive. Resist the urge to jump into one of the waiting cabs and just wait for an Uber back. There were also shuttles.

I also think they are missing some more interactive sections like those offered by other decommissioned ships. Also, they lack signage across the ship and we almost missed a HUGE indoor section because we didn't even know where to go next. If it wasn't because my husband is a sailor and knows his way around a ship, I am pretty sure I would have missed half of the exhibit. Did my sailor husband loved it? Absolutely. Would I come back if it weren't for him? Probably not.

I believe I selected the 2nd earliest slot. When you get to Pearl Harbor, there's 2 main exhibits that give a good summary of the history surrounding the events at Pearl Harbor. Those are free and don't require any sort of ticket. I can see it getting fairly busy later in the day, and it might be harder to get up close to some of the displays. Before getting to the USS Arizona, there's a short film and one of the employees emphasized that the USS Arizona is a burial site, so we should be respectful. Afterwards, it was a short boat ride to the USS Arizona. Immediately at the USS Arizona memorial, the mood was very solemn. Over 2 thousand people lost their lives from the attack on Pearl Harbor, and obviously that's a lot of people, but it's hard to imagine/visualize. But at the memorial, all their names are displayed on the wall. It's very emotional to see all those names and to think about what their families and friends must have gone through to learn about what happened to their loved one. It seemed like everyone there was respectful, including children. The memorial itself is not very large, so you can really take your time to look around and read before the next group disembarks and you can take that boat back. There are many other exhibits at the Pearl Harbor site, but as far as I know, they require some sort of entry fee/reservation. History buffs would love this and could easily spend hours looking at everything. Unfortunately I didn't have too much time, so I only went to the USS Arizona but I still enjoyed it and I thought it was very well done.
