I believe this same space in Davis Mercantile used to be a different '80s-looking wholesome-fast-food place. It had been at least two years since I visited Shipshewana, and for once, I was hungry when I got here. We had about twenty minutes before we had to leave--Marlene runs a tight ship--so I walked right up and ordered a Parmesan pretzel with pizza dipping sauce. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but the first thing I noticed was that the teen who took and prepared my order wasn't Amish or even Mennonite. No, although he seemed harder-working than a run-of-the-mill Gen Z teenager, the way he spoke belied his typicality. I don't remember which slang I heard him use with his coworkers, but he also told me, "You're fine," when I apologized for something. ("You're fine" having been invented by Millennials as a way of saying "no problem," "no worries," "forget about it," etc.; it's like they and their Gen Z counterparts are unable to say, "It's OK.") The second thing I noticed was that after pulling the pretzel out from its heating box, he proceeded to grate the Parmesan cheese directly onto the pretzel. I had expected the pretzel to be filled with cheese, so this hand-grating experience was definitely a bonus. The pretzels seem expensive for Shipshewana, but then this "mall" doesn't get much traffic, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. The number of straight-out-of-the-'80s plastic booths of different sizes is hopeful on their part; unless large groups of Mennonite teenagers begin hanging out at Davis Mercantile the way that the fictional Indiana teens from Stranger Things hung out at their mall, the vast majority of these booths (more than a dozen in total) will remain empty. There are lots of pretzel and dipping-sauce choices. It's a cute place, decorated in a different nostalgic way than one would imagine in Amish country. Teenagers who seem happy to work in fast food and spend their freeish time talking to and joking with one another rather than doomscrolling on their phones? What's not to like? read more

In terms of smell, this place is 10/10 - just amazing. I have been able to resist on my last few visits but today I caved and ordered a cinnamon sugar pretzel with icing dip to go. Unfortunately, my dip wasn't there when I reached my destination. This was super disappointing since I paid for it and tipped on the total amount. The pretzel itself is pretty good - not tough at all and nicely covered with cinnamon and sugar but it's hard to imagine trying this place out again. I'm obsessed with soft pretzels and I have fond memories of coming to Davis Mercantile specifically for Jojo's Pretzels. My husband had never been to Shipshewana so this is the first place I had to take him. He got a chili dog that he said was oddly sweet but delicious. I was disappointed he didn't chose a pretzel but was glad he enjoyed what he got. I got the standard original pretzel and cheddar cheese dip. It was as amazing as I remembered. Fluffy, salty and just greasy enough to make my tummy smile. You truly cannot beat Jojo's pretzels and it's a fun extra that you can watch them make the pretzels out of dough right in front of you. I also appreciate that they have a large seating area to enjoy your food and drink before continuing shopping. I'm already dreaming about my next trip to Davis Mercantile just for Jojo's. Each time I've been in Shipshewana, I've gone to Ben's Pretzels. This time, I read about JoJo's and decided to try them as well. JoJo's is in the Davis Mercantile mall, which is probably why I hadn't noticed it before; I'd been in the mall, but wasn't looking for food. This time, though, I sought it out. JoJo's pretzels are a bit thinner and baked a little darker than Ben's, but they are still very large -- and a lot less expensive. I bought 2 to take home with me, and they filled my car with the most wonderful aroma. Unlike Ben's, JoJo's did have mustard available at no charge -- both in a large jar pump as well as little packets. I warmed up a pretzel in the microwave at home, and it was just as soft and smelled just as good as it did when I first purchased it. Light, tasty and slightly sweet, the pretzels just made my mouth happy. read more

Jo Jo's Pretzels. Be eager to embrace the name but don't let the name fool ya! This creative mini food court at the base of the Davis Mercantile is part of the reason my girls and I drive from two states away to encounter the best in pretzels! But they have more than just knotted dough. They have a plethora of drinks - even fountain drinks at that... they also have a lot of home made sandwiches on display. They have the standard variety of bread and meat combinations but these morsels taste as though your mom (or someone else's) made them with. Now back to the core of this review! They don't just have ONE pretzel to choose from. I ordered the garlic pretzel and it was the size of my head! They have other pretzel flavors to choose from. And I got the huge sense that each flavored pretzel had the additional flavor baked in the dough...not just spread on after the fact. I recall them having cinnamon and parmesan. Ill have to recheck photos I took that may reveal more of their menu. Outside of providing the gift and art of a pretzel - I want to put a spotlight on their cashiers. We have visited this café probably 7 different times. Each time I was greeted with a new Amish face (or so it seemed) and every one behind the counter is very friendly and customer oriented! Their sheer interaction with you will make you want to come back to buy more. The only quip I have is if you order a handful of pretzels... these do not reheat very well the next day. However, buying a pretzel HERE will simply make you appreciate what is so grand about life. No one make's pretzels as fresh or with as much flavor than Jo Jo's! We went here twice in one weekend - it was THAT good! As my five year old says, "best pretzels I have had in my whole entire life!"
