I believe this same space in Davis Mercantile used to be a different '80s-looking wholesome-fast-food place. It had been at least two years since I visited Shipshewana, and for once, I was hungry when I got here. We had about twenty minutes before we had to leave--Marlene runs a tight ship--so I walked right up and ordered a Parmesan pretzel with pizza dipping sauce. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but the first thing I noticed was that the teen who took and prepared my order wasn't Amish or even Mennonite. No, although he seemed harder-working than a run-of-the-mill Gen Z teenager, the way he spoke belied his typicality. I don't remember which slang I heard him use with his coworkers, but he also told me, "You're fine," when I apologized for something. ("You're fine" having been invented by Millennials as a way of saying "no problem," "no worries," "forget about it," etc.; it's like they and their Gen Z counterparts are unable to say, "It's OK.") The second thing I noticed was that after pulling the pretzel out from its heating box, he proceeded to grate the Parmesan cheese directly onto the pretzel. I had expected the pretzel to be filled with cheese, so this hand-grating experience was definitely a bonus. The pretzels seem expensive for Shipshewana, but then this "mall" doesn't get much traffic, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. The number of straight-out-of-the-'80s plastic booths of different sizes is hopeful on their part; unless large groups of Mennonite teenagers begin hanging out at Davis Mercantile the way that the fictional Indiana teens from Stranger Things hung out at their mall, the vast majority of these booths (more than a dozen in total) will remain empty. There are lots of pretzel and dipping-sauce choices. It's a cute place, decorated in a different nostalgic way than one would imagine in Amish country. Teenagers who seem happy to work in fast food and spend their freeish time talking to and joking with one another rather than doomscrolling on their phones? What's not to like?

I've been going to JoJo's for years. They have some of the best soft pretzels I've ever had. The line today was huge! But went reasonably quickly. This location is in Davis Mercantile and quite touristy. But we were able to get a seat in the adjacent coffee shop and enjoy our pretzel lunch.

Best pretzels! Also, the sweet mustard sauce is SO good! And they have that good ice, too, so always get a soda!

Hands down the best pretzel I've ever eaten in my life. Huge, thick, chew with a ton of powdery topping (parmesan) with a hint of garlic. Every bite had the flavor of the topping on it. Every bite was devoured and it was very sad when it was all gone. I am sad that they are so far away. Nothing else to say, here, other than just go eat their pretzels.

I haven't been able to have a soft pretzel for years because of a gluten allergy I developed... JoJo's gluten-free pretzel is AMAZING!!! You need to go here now! My husband had a garlic pretzel (with gluten) and he loved it.

They make the pretzels out of dough right in front of you and then throw them in and out of the oven! What can be better than a hot pretzel straight out of the oven? Really good pretzels and really tasty. Seating is communal which makes this a great family joint. I'd recommend ordering an original pretzel like we did!

    Yum!!

There are a ton of places making pretzels these days, but if you haven't been to JoJo's, you haven't really experienced the joy a proper pretzel brings. I don't know what they do differently, but truly no other pretzel joint compares. The pretzels are huge, doughy, and perfect, every time. I have been to JoJo's many times and never once been disappointed by an old pretzel. They also offer old fashioned soda (green rivers, etc) and many more. If you are in Shipshewana, you have to have one. Trust me!

No social distancing at this restaurant, but the pretzels are still good, we got carry out because of the crowds in the seating area.

I didn't really think a pretzel was quite enough for lunch so we have always gone somewhere else when in Shipshe.

This "famous" little gem is known for its delicious pretzels and other scrumptious pretzel dough based delights. We started with the regular pretzel and purchased nacho cheese and sweet mustard sauce accompaniments for $1 each. The pretzel was exactly what we had hoped for...light, airy, doughy, but with a crunchy exterior. The whole family enjoyed splitting one pretzel. Afterward, I was still feeling a bit peckish. I decided to order myself an ice coffee along with a pretzel dough rolled all beef hotdog with melted Swiss cheese sandwiched inside. Love at first bite. The whole experience was HEAVEN. I've never had more tasty "junk" food in my life. Dip it in the sweet mustard accompaniment (trust me) for the ultimate tastebud sensory experience. I think we spent under $15 for all the stuff. Extremely reasonable and you can go for a snack or a meal. So many treats and a friendly/ hardworking staff made the whole experience delightful.

Spiritual, real knowledge, real skills, quality. Did I say F THE MODERN WORLD PEOPLE already?!! Yeah, good.

There's salad, bread, soup, entrees and sides too - all cooked Amish style. I loved the beef noodles, meatloaf, and broccoli salad. I sampled some other dishes, but had to save room for pie. There were some really delicious puddings too - blueberry with fresh blueberries in it and a warm bread pudding. Delicious! Service was quick and friendly and I think it's a good value for $22. I took a look, but was more impressed with the freshness, value and experience on the main floor with menu order options. The restaurant style reminded me of a re-imagined Amish version of Cracker Barrel with handmade oddities for sale. It was surprisingly busy with it being 4:30pm, and slightly annoying to learn the kids could not have the buffet if we were ordering from the menu because there are separate seating arrangements. We chose the restaurant side. Our waitress was bubbly and energetic... extremely thorough while maintaining a friendly neighborly vibe. She commanded the restaurant like it was her vocation and truly seemed pleased to serve her hungry patrons. Once she took our order and brought out our drinks we were delighted with a small homemade loaf of seed bread with real butter, apple butter, or Amish peanut butter (peanuts, honey, and marshmallow fluff mixed together) to top it with. As we enjoyed snacking, the two kids meals, and two adult dinners with soft drinks (they do not serve alcohol) came in around $75 total. The kids meal came with homemade fried (2) drumsticks, fries, drink and a cookie reserved for the end of the meal. Everything is homemade and my picky eater's gobbled it all up! Hubby ordered the fried chicken dinner and was happy enough, but both of us noted that our breast was slightly over cooked by a minute or so (slim margins, but made for a slightly dry and tough tasting breast). He loved his corn accompaniment, noting that it tasted like it was freshly cut from the cob. I opted for the Amish sampler plate and enjoyed the meatloaf, the breading of the fried chicken, the texture of the roast beef (though the seasoning could've improved), and the chicken stuffing with fresh carrots with a slight crunchy texture mixed in. The green bean side was good enough with the bacon, but lacking a crispy texture. The mashed potatoes and beef gravy were just okay. This gargantuan portion also came with a small side salad of leafy greens, a cucumber slice and grape tomato with dressing of your choice. Everything was good... so much food! I felt like I should've toiled on the farm all day to earn such a filling meal. For dessert we bought a homemade strawberry rhubarb pie to take home. Perfectly cooked (no soggy bottom) and wonderful texture and married flavors. The pie was worth it for $18 and if you stop by the visitor center you can get a $1 coupon. Just make sure to bring it in so they can staple it to the receipt for accounting. If we ever come back I may need to try the lemon meringue pie. The peaks were gorgeous and so tall! Pros: good home cooking. Homemade pies. Value prices for what you get. Cons: potential long waits, separate buffet from restaurant and some food lacking seasoning.
