This is one of those old time restaurants that make you feel at home. They have the best draft root beer we've ever had. House made pastries are a real treat. The customer service is thoughtful and attentive. Easy to get to from Notre Dame. Plenty of parking. The only hiccup was being sat under a high-powered wall-mounted air conditioner unit, and then felt like we received their irritation when we asked to move to the empty table next to us, away from the cold air. I would like to suggest the restaurant add a baffle or some way to divert the air. read more

Although the restaurant was not busy, the server ignored us as we waited by the "Please wait to be seated" sign and continued moving cakes around in the lobby. We waited patiently for several minutes and finally asked her if we could be seated. She said someone else would do that. Finally "someone else" came and she said she would seat us. Then she went back to the woman with the cakes and didn't come back. We waited longer and finally I went back to where they were and asked if we could please be seated or maybe even seat ourselves. We were told that was not "procedure" and we were ignored again. Finally all the talking and cake moving ended and we were seated at a table with dirty glasses and given equally dirty menus. We were left alone again until we finally gave up and left. This was the most bizarre incident I've ever experienced in a restaurant. In town for the Irish? Well I suggest you "Eat, Drink, Be German", as recommended at Weiss Gasthaus. On a recent trip to Notre Dame University for a football game, we were looking for a good place for dinner. After driving 8.5 hours from Pennsylvania we spotted Weiss Gasthaus on the way to our South Bend hotel. It's not often you see a German restaurant so I checked out yelp reviews and after reading, I knew we had to try it. We LOVED it. My husband ordered a beer, the Kostritzer, in a liter mug (it was HUGE). I had a dry Riesling. We ordered the Brussels sprouts appetizer with bacon and maple syrup (among the best Brussels ever). My husband and I each ordered one the Thursday dinner specials, the brisket. The brisket was tender with the fat cap intact. It was a generous portion served with a seasonal fresh vegetable medley (seasoned perfectly) and mashed potatoes. My husband also ordered a side of braised red cabbage (also delicious). My dad ordered the other Thursday special, the roulade, with spaetzle and red cabbage. Our entrees were served with a dinner salad. We all enjoyed the homemade vinaigrette dressing. And finally, my dad ordered the German Apple Cake for dessert, which he really enjoyed. The atmosphere is pleasant, with Cuckoo clocks displayed in the dinin We must also mention our wonderful server Marye. She was helpful with ordering and displayed wonderful Midwestern friendliness. I won't be as lengthy as last time haha-- but suffice it to say I will DEFINITELY be back. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere-- cozy, welcoming, and yet laid back. Our waitress, Mary, was kind and attentive to answer any questions I had about the menu. She checked in appropriately but didn't hover. Now for the FOOD... WOW. It was so very delicious! I didn't bring my phone, otherwise I would have updated my pictures as well. The portion sizes were much more generous than when I carried out my order, I was very glad with portions and quality. The food was piping hot, perfectly seasoned, and just HIT THE SPOT. I was craving some comfort food, and I could not have asked for a better meal. Ate at Weiss' Gasthaus on a Friday night for our 33rd wedding anniversary. Has the mushroom soup for appetizer, it was awesome. Had Sourbraten for main, was a little salty compared to usual. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, but had quite a wait for the food. Everything is homemade, but even so it was a long wait. Again, my past visits were not so slow. The place is nice, lots of things to look at including a wall of cucuclocks. Will come back again, but the long wait holds me off a 5 star rating. read more

The roasted veggies were good, but somehow didn't seem like a traditional german fare (but I admit ignorance). Our server was just OK, but fortunately another couple came in immediately behind us and their server was superb. As such, we got to overhear a few things that helped. Although we had just declined desert and paid when the other waitress suggested they could get their cake to go (they voiced feeling a bit full)... My family had a lovely dinner. They have nice wait staff even the chef came and brought our amazing food and drinks. I had a very nice salty pretzel for my appetizer. I love my pretzels salty. We also had ham shank it was delicious. The Jager schnitzel was perfectly cooked and the bread crumbs on top of it did not fall off. Me and my family went for Sunday brunch. The whole experience was wonderful. We had a large party and needed a high chair. The staff was so accommodating with some very specific food requests and arranging everyone comfortably. They brought warm biscuits and apple butter to the table- which was absolutely delicious. I had an omelette which was tasty and packed with fresh veggies. I tried a bite of schnitzel though and if I ever make it back that's what i'll be having. The first impressions of the restaurant don't give you much. Seems like a run of the mill German restaurant, with some schnitzels and some sausages. However, our friend from Niles insisted that we come for brunch, so I gave it a shot. The service was excellent and our server explained everything to us about the sauces (jager sauce is mushroom base and it is fantastic). She was friendly and patient with our tired and probably a little hungover group. I ordered the schnitzel with the jager sauce and a side of spaetzle. The schnitzel was excellent, moist and crispy, with a super rich umami jager sauce to go with it. The spaetzle was fine, but incredibly rich. The potatoes that came with my schnitzel were amazing - we were trying to figure out what they do to them to make them so unique and interesting. Try the radler for brunch! It's juicy and beery in all the right ways. I wish more places would offer them instead of mimosas. I am never in this area but was very happy to get to experience the restaurant and a little bit of South Bend. read more

Not great for kids at that time--no real kids menu so our boys had to order adult meals that they weren't familiar with. Every time I go here the food and service are consistently great! We ordered the potato pancakes and they were incredible--much better than the potato pancakes you get at the Christkindlmarket in Chicago. We also got the smaller portions of the schnitzel, which was very good. The schnitzel comes with sauerkraut but they let you substitute in spätzle. The spätzle is a bit different than what I'm used to. It's more of a scrambled egg texture/taste than a noodle texture but it's still good. And, the Black Forest cake we ordered was delicious! The decor is pretty standard German restaurant decor and they very lightly play German music in the background. The noise level in the restaurant is very low which is great. Some restaurants it's impossible to hear the people you came with talk and that's definitely not the case here!
