This "famous" little gem is known for its delicious pretzels and other scrumptious pretzel dough based delights. We started with the regular pretzel and purchased nacho cheese and sweet mustard sauce accompaniments for $1 each. The pretzel was exactly what we had hoped for...light, airy, doughy, but with a crunchy exterior. The whole family enjoyed splitting one pretzel. Afterward, I was still feeling a bit peckish. I decided to order myself an ice coffee along with a pretzel dough rolled all beef hotdog with melted Swiss cheese sandwiched inside. Love at first bite. The whole experience was HEAVEN. I've never had more tasty "junk" food in my life. Dip it in the sweet mustard accompaniment (trust me) for the ultimate tastebud sensory experience. I think we spent under $15 for all the stuff. When I first started creating some awareness of my Tenderness Tour event in Elkhart County, Ben's Soft Pretzels was one of the first to reach out with encouragement. Ben's was founded by an Amish family - I believe it was founded right here in Shipshewana and is now based out of Elkhart. So, it's now a nationally known chain based right here in Indiana. The Pretzels are phenomenal. They carry large pretzels, pretzel bites, pretzel dogs, pretzel pockets, and have around a dozen different sauces that can go with the pretzels. I think I also saw some "prizza" options. As I had just wheeled on the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, I was careful to not get anything too spicy due to my fragile system. However, [[HIGHLIGHT]]I enjoyed a wonderful, simple meal that was satisfying in an environment that was warm and inviting.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] As I also had a film crew with me, kind of a big deal since I was in a heavily Amish community and wanted to be respectful of culture, I sat in the corner of a side room since I knew media was coming to do an interview and wanted to have both privacy and to make sure the camera didn't wander. It was clear that not all the employees were Amish, however, it appeared some definitely were. The employees were all friendly and they kept up a good pace even with it being a busy flea market weekend in the area. I ended up getting a pretzel dog and drink and being quite happy with it. There was also an area where you could buy some Shipshewana-themed items. I really loved this place - It was pretty simple in terms of accessibility (as is most of Shipshewana). The entrance was workable and the dining room offered plenty of space. However, not a whole lot was actually defined as accessible. I think I'd experienced Ben's one time prior to this visit. If I recall correctly, they had a location in Indy in a Meijer, however, it was fairly short-lived. This is a national chain now with locations sprinkled around and a heavy population in Indiana and the Midwest. There's no doubt I'll return when in the Shipshewana area. read more

Far superior to JoJo's! My husband and I are in Shipshewana for our wedding anniversary, and having an appreciation for well-made soft pretzels, we knew we had to conduct an informal taste-test of both Ben's and JoJo's Pretzels to determine which is better. The winner is definitely Ben's. Our test began yesterday when we sampled JoJo's original pretzel (accompanied by sweet mustard for me and spicy mustard for my husband) and the cinnamon sugar (without dip). The pretzels themselves were a bit dry and rubbery, giving the impression that the dough was either sitting out for an extended time or that it was overworked. The pretzels were a bit spindly, rather than plump, also giving the impression that the dough was not really fresh. We felt that the pretzels needed the dips for moisture. The flavor was fine, although the cinnamon-sugar ratio was a little low, making that pretzel pretty sweet. It definitely would have been too sweet with a dip. Today we tried Ben's. We bought the same flavors (original with sweet mustard & spicy mustard and cinnamon sugar without dip). Far superior, in our opinion. The pretzels were plump but still obviously handmade. The dough was fluffy and light with no toughness. Not dry at all. We didn't really feel the need to use the mustards, but we each tried them to maintain equal tastings. We agreed that mustards at JoJo's were better, but that we'd much rather have pretzels (from Ben's) that don't need mustard. The cinnamon-sugar ratio was much better at Ben's as well, with the cinnamon dominating the sweetness of the sugar. We were planning to get a couple pretzel pockets for lunch, but we found we were satiated after sharing our pretzels. We do plan to return on our way out of town for a couple pockets and pretzels for the road, as well as a Ben's make-at-home pretzel kit. read more

Their sign said they have the best pretzels so, ok, we will see if they are. We walked in and saw a REALLY long line of both Amish and non Amish people waiting to order. There were big families eating away at the stuffed pretzels for lunch. We had time, we were hungry so we waited too. We were very excited to see the pretzel wrapped dill pickle with cheese and a side Amish peanut butter dip...most of my husbands favorite foods (could have added SPAM to make it perfect for him) When we ordered, we found out that it was $2 pretzel day, thus the line of people. When we took a bite of our regular BIG soft pretzel, we were convinced that it is INDEED the best pretzel ever. After watching a beautiful hard working young woman cutting the dough, rolling, twisting, dipping and then baking, we also know it was the freshest pretzel in the history of the world. Pretzels have a lot of presence in the little town of Shipshewana. In most of the Amish shopping centers, you will find either a Ben's Pretzels or a Jojo's Pretzels. All of these are just small stands, like the chain food stands in supermarkets or malls. But not this place! When we rolled into our yearly Shipshewana trip today, we found a new building in town. This new giant red barn is an entire restaurant dedicated to Ben's Pretzels! This was actually my first time trying Ben's (we'd never thought that the pretzels were anything special, but hey, if they make a whole store for it, right?). I'll get straight to the pretzel itself...being freshly baked in the building, they were very soft. They are lightly salted but not too much...these aren't the kind of pretzels that have giant shards of salt puncturing them that will scrape your throat up. All around, yummy! This place has about as big of a menu as a pretzel-themed restaurant can! They have all sorts of "pretzel pockets," pizza-like ingredients stuffed into a roll of their pretzel dough. They have various dipping sauces and various flavors of actual pretzel as well. They have soft drinks, and apparently also ice cream, with pretzel cones (not sure if this is always available or if it was a special deal). There was more seating in here than you would think they would need. It was actually a pretty cool environment, they had a ton of different retro-looking chairs and tables. They have little shakers of cinnamon sugar and garlic at each table too. This was a very interesting place! I've never seen somewhere this dedicated to pretzels.
