I hired Barry (Bear O'Connor) to replace my bathroom floor, install a new water-efficient toilet,…read moreand install a corner shower, but my experience was frustrating and unprofessional. While Barry was responsive at first, things took a turn when serious issues arose with the quality of work. Barry claimed to be a fully-insured contractor that had years of experience doing bathroom remodels, including installing showers, yet he chose not to use a shower membrane for waterproofing, despite my mom and I both asking about it. He built directly on top of the existing floor rather than replacing it, and he used old, salvaged wood that had water damage and other structural concerns. He was using wall tiles to do the floor and a walk-in tile shower since he insisted on buying everything for the bathroom remodel (despite my offer to go shopping and buy it all), but he couldn't get a corner shower. He overcharged me for all the items he bought, and he never provided store receipts. We learned he purchased most of it from Greater Green Bay Habitat For Humanity ReStore, so we visited that business and were able to find the prices for most of it, and he barely spent $100, yet he charged me $600 for materials. He claimed to have purchased a dishwasher for me, but his story kept changing about that, and he never did bring it to my home. I reached out to professionals, posted photos in handyman/contractor groups, and spoke to people at hardware stores. Not a single person agreed with Barry's approach, and it became clear that he dismissed an industry standard without valid reasoning. Barry's response was, "You don't need a waterproof membrane under it. You're using tile." This was inaccurate, and it was condescending when we had valid concerns about water damage in the future. Tile is porous and will soak up water, leading to moisture reaching the wooden floor underneath the shower and causing significant damage in the future. Not to mention the floor that he was building on top of the existing floor created space for significant mold growth in the future. One man took one look at the photos and said, "None of that is up to code at all." In addition to that, Barry promised to arrive at a specific time to complete the job, but he was always late (sometimes by hours) and had different excuses each time. He also asked for cash every time he showed up at my house, and he would leave shortly after I gave it to him with one reason or another. On one day, he asked for cash twice. It was at this point I came up with a loss limit budget to avoid losing a lot of money on what had quickly become a disaster. He brought his niece to my home on the second day, and she had very obvious signs of drug use. He told me the following day that she uses heroin. He also used a vape in my house constantly, and I'm allergic to nicotine and other smoking substances. I dealt with a swollen tongue up until two days after he last left my home. He had numerous problems with his truck, and it leaked oil all over my brand new driveway (the cement was newly poured Fall 2023). He never apologized for this. In fact, he left early one day to go to the hardware store, and an hour later, texted me that he didn't get there before it closed because he was having trouble with his truck overheating. He said he didn't know why that was happening. Maybe because it's leaking oil?! He's currently or was recently a mechanic for Da Silva Prime Auto, which is concerning when he can't even take care of his own truck properly. Barry's lack of professionalism, poor communication, very poor quality of work, lack of good judgment, and failure to adhere to basic standards left me incredibly disappointed, and I had to fire him when it became clear he had absolutely no idea what he was doing. I would not recommend his services for anyone looking for reliable and competent work.

Unfortunately I am writing only two stars due to a lack of follow-through which I believe every customer deserves. After providing the upfront 10% down I waited patiently for 3 weeks for "start work". The 10% check cleared in the first 14 days after mailing and felt this was a good sign. However during a good faith check-in call I was disappointed with the re-rack of schedule and numerous reasons/excuses for the inability to perform the work. The weather was no different than expected in the Green Bay area yet that came out as the primary apologetic reason/excuse for essentially a day for day delay. Perhaps if I had any movement or contact while patiently waiting for up to 6 weeks to start work, then I wouldn't be writing this review. I am sure this is not indicative of their 30+ years in business, but this didn't help me as another customer who didn't feel valued. Perhaps there are others, but certainly hope not.

He used phrases like "on the high side" and I can't imagine it being more than that," and made us feel assured that our budgeting was appropriate. Given that, we agreed to a deposit of $250 for him to go ahead with a formal quote, per company policy. When the proposal came back, it was $45K, which is more than double what we had discussed. While I understand that quality work and materials are costly, I don't understand how his verbal estimates were so grossly inaccurate, especially when he said he's been working there for 18 years. While I understand the deposit was intended to cover his time in gathering the estimates, and that he "doesn't work for free," a large part of his job is properly estimating potential costs for potential clients, and he did not do that. We agreed to the $250 deposit based on incredibly inaccurate numbers, and when I requested our deposit back, we were denied (twice.) While I don't think it was his intention to be deceptive, we felt swindled out of $250. I was very disappointed that they weren't willing to refund us.
