Woooow! Jorge & his team really put together a fantastic catering spread for my family for our grandma's 90th surprise party. I love supporting local & Jorge really went above & beyond to provide a wonderful meal for our family! Joey & I picked it up right when we arrived in Topeka after an 8hr drive from Denver, and Jorge was just the sweetest, thanking us for choosing his business & sharing his excitement for our upcoming meal. Soooo sweet!! We had 25 people & still had so many leftovers, and it was all packaged perfectly. We had a crunchy taco & burrito bar with 4 huge pans with chicken/veggies, ground beef taco meat, rice & beans. It came with 2 huge pans of chips, as well as half pans of queso, salsa, cilantro, onions, smoked jalapeños, shredded cheese, lettuce & sour cream. The chicken & veggies were phenomenal, the taco meat was perfectly seasoned, and everything was piping hot! And most importantly, none of it was too salty. I compared the shrimp burritos to Rene's in Wichita, and Rene's definitely wins that category for me. That said, this was only a one-time visit and based on a single menu item. The menu is extensive, so there may be other dishes that are far more worthy of an exceptional review. I'm willing to come back and give a few more items a try before making a final judgment. Where have I've been? A hidden Topeka gem for great Mexican food. Looks small but seats over 50 folks. Inexpensive lunch specials and full dinner menu. Outstanding tasting Coke products. Great fast service with hot plates. As I enjoyed lunch every plate out from kitchen I wanted to try. Locals eat here! Save room for great deserts, in fact have desert first so you don't fill up!!! Parking a bit difficult in small strip center on West side of Fairlawn. Great pastry and coffee shop shop next door too! I came here as it was highly recommended to me for l everyone being friendly and the best service. I took my mother here and when I tell you the owner was so incredibly rude. He gave us one snarky look and ignored us the entire time. He went to every other table asking how everyone and their grandmothers were doing and meanwhile he didn't even once ask us how we were doing. Let alone if we wanted the check. The younger waitresses and waiters were friendly so they're the reason we stayed but I will not be returning simply bc of how astonished I was at the owners rude attitude. The saddest part is that we were the only Latinos in the restaurant and we tried saying hi and starting a conversation but we may as well have been dogs in the corner of the room. Stopped into Jorge's on a Friday night, looking for good, easy dinner. Perfect. Busy at 6 pm, but they seated me pretty quickly. Without looking too much at the menu, I asked if I could have something with 4 beef enchiladas (3 would have been plenty) and a tamale appetizer. They made that work, and it was a good experience all around. One thing I thought was cool. I was alone, so I expected them to seat me at the bar (would have been fine) or one of the two tops (also would have been fine.) But the first thing that freed up was a four person booth, and that's where they sat me. I was an efficient customer, so I tried not to take up the space too long, but I thought that was very friendly. Jorge's in Topeka KS (located on SW Fairlawn Rd and SW West Drive) is a must. Jorge greets all his diners as family or an old friend as they walk through his door. The restaurant has a vibration that encourages celebration, neighborly kindness. This is a great place to celebrate publicly an anniversary, birthday, job promotion etc. Jorge and his team will collectively share your celebration with you. You might even get a ukulele serenade by Jorge himself. He is very busy and is sure to be found talking to one or five of his diners. Additionally Jorge serves up the best fresh margaritas. They are huge and delicious! I has the orange marg with sugar on the rim and fresh orange slices mixed in. The restaurant is bright with lots of festive colors and pictures. If you are planning a Cinco de Mayo celebration this would be a fun place to celebrate! I ordered the ground beef chimichanga. It was large and came out hot. It was delicious. Salsa and queso ordered as well. Very good. Hector was our server. He was welcoming, very polite with a little boujy. Hector represents Jorge's in the best way. It was a great visit. Topeka, Kansas What a lively place! This place has so much energy! Every table is filled at 6 PM on a Wednesday night. When they see you, they bring you a basket of chips that are delicious. And a bowl for salsa. They pour the salsa from a picture and continue to carry it around the restaurant and refill everybody's salsa bowl. The chips are delicious! The salsa is more of a liquidy purée but delicious, flavor nonetheless. There are tables in the middle with vinyl seats and high back wooden booths that have tables with pictures of Mexico printed on them. There were only three drafts available and I went with the Modelo. They brought it quickly and they serve water in large cups. There is one girl that walks around taking care of everybody's chips and salsa. The minute you run low, she replaces it. Never had to ask. Call me naïve, but the staff was all gathered around the bar doing a chant and dance. I thought they were excited about my beer, but they were only doing the Kansas City Chiefs dance. When I told them that I was not from Kansas, and I did not like the Chiefs, the waiter yelled out to the owner, and they all chanted boo in the restaurant. Once again, this is a very energetic, loud, lively place. But much fun. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice and my husband ordered the chicken chimichanga. Mine came with rice, which is very good. I have three enchiladas and I chose to have cheese sauce and they also put a little bit of green salsa on it. Comes with a guacamole salad. I am very pleased with this meal. The presentation is nice with some cheese sprinkled on top for a finish. I do think the chicken is a little on the tough side, but it has very good flavor. The chimichanga comes with rice pilaf, sour cream, guacamole, and refried beans. No complaints as the meal was delicious. I am blown away by the camaraderie of the staff. They all help each other out and go to all the tables, and everybody talks to everyone. Every waiter laughs and engages with each of the customers. I don't think I have ever seen this in a restaurant. This is a feel good dining experience. I just can't say enough about the staff. Each and everyone of them engages with the table. They all are positive and upbeat. The weight staff is even running to go get food to take care of the customers. This blows me away. I am so impressed. I rarely give out five stars. Jorge's is a fairly New Mexican Restaurant, it is very small/quaint and does get busy. We came in around noon, we sat ourselves in a booth in the back. There were only a few open tables. A guy came by with chips and salsa fairly quickly. We sat for about 10 min before my mom asked if we could get waited on. The gal went to the back and asked who had our table(5). We nearly finished our chips and salsa before our server came out and asked if anyone took our drinks-which no one had. We placed our lunch order and food came out hot and fresh. Jorge's has my favorite Mexican food in Topeka. The main appeals for me are cleanliness and the great food. Jorge and his family work at the restaurant, and you can often find Jorge talking with his regulars and chatting. I do wish Jorge would acknowledge or talk to those who don't know him from Margarita's North. He is so friendly and personable to his regulars and greets them by name when they walk in the door. I've been in several times, and while not enough to make me a "regular", it would be nice if Jorge stopped to see how the experience is for new guests as well. The restaurant is very clean, and that is huge for me. I know Jorge's is newer, but I'm hoping the current standards can be maintained. The food is delicious. The Burrito California is awesome, huge, and enough for two meals. I also highly recommend the Guacamole Mexicano. I am sure this is a eating establishment that a lot of people like to go to. But out of the last three times I have had The Misfortune of eating here I have not had one meal that did not have its issues. The last time I was there I had carne asada tacos that could not be picked up because there was so much grease it ate through the tortillas. I was forced by the owner to pay full price for a meal I could not eat. And I got a 10-minute lecture on how different people have different tastes. In my opinion I hope this place closes and the alcoholic owner is forced to go to jail. read more
