I am a previous patient. I went there for about a year. I absolutely LOVED the psychiatrist and PA…read morethat I saw at GLBH, however, their receptionists are HORRIBLE. Not only were they rude and not understanding, but they threatened to remove me as a client if I had to reschedule my appt. after having done so a couple times, even though up until I left, I hadn't had ONE no call-no show. I always called ahead of time and re-scheduled. I was working as a nanny at the time, and I'm sure many mothers understand that things come up, and appointments have to be rescheduled, but this office was not understanding about it at all. The final straw for me was when I missed an appointment (which I completely forgot about under the circumstances) because my grandma had a STROKE. She was 3 hours away from me in the hospital under observation and so of course, I decided to drive to her and make sure she was going to be okay. During my drive, I received a call from the receptionist at GLBH saying I had missed my appointment and through TEARS, I explained why I had forgotten and why I missed the appointment. The receptionist showed NO sympathy whatsoever and decided to go ahead and change me the $50 no-call no-show fee, despite the devastating circumstances. I was completely distraught that I was being charged when the situation was completely out of my control. I asked if it could be waved because I had never had a no-call no-show, but they refused. I decided to leave their practice and find a more understanding and courteous environment to meet my health needs. I refused to pay the $50 fee and now they have increased it because I have not paid it. My credit is terrible, I plan on letting it go to collections because it is complete crap that I would have to pay it to begin with considering what I was going through at the time. I highly suggest finding another office for your mental health needs. I now go to Forest View and they have been much more understanding; do not complain about missed/rescheduled appointments and have always understood when something detrimental comes up.

As others have noted, Dr. V lacks compassion, has poor listening skills, is quick to judgement and…read moreis unethical in his commitment to patients. He "fires" (his language) his patients when they do not respond to treatment. Certainly it is his choice to work with whomever he likes, however, the standard of professional care is to calmly explain why he can no longer treat the patient and then offer some suggestions or assistance for next steps. Leaving a young, inexperienced patient suddenly with no recourse or plan regarding medication is not only unprofessional, but a matter of patient safety when toxic substances are involved. He berates patients, is highly critical with little understanding of the great effort involved in self care for patients suffering deep depression, makes snarky claims regarding patient compliance with no data to back up his supposition. This is his method for 'dumping' the patient rather than acknowledge that his treatment was failing. His procedure to encourage compliance with his treatment is to use threatening language related to suicide. This is highly unethical and borders on mal-practice. He is snarky in the extreme, having little to no patience with those struggling to adjust to new medication. He is insulting to family members when they try to work as a team to support the young adult patient. Although psychiatrists are in short supply in Grand Rapids I would highly recommend you steer clear of this extremely unprofessional practitioner.

My daughter, London, was only 12 years old when she was voluntarily hospitalized at Pine Rest. Like many families in crisis trying to protect their child, we trusted the medical professionals, policies, and systems involved in her care. During her treatment, Pine Rest prescribed Prozac to London. Our family does not believe Pine Rest fully informed us about the numerous serious risks associated with SSRIs in children and adolescents--most importantly, the FDA's black box warning of increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children. London's death occurred while she was still within the early weeks of SSRI exposure - a period widely recognized as requiring extremely close monitoring due to increased risks of behavioral changes and suicidality in some children and adolescents. She was a beautiful child - intelligent, compassionate, artistic, athletic, funny, deeply sensitive, and endlessly loved. Our family now lives with unimaginable grief. To be clear, London did not die inside the facility. However, our family believes there were serious failures by Pine Rest which contributed to the loss of my daughter. In response to this tragedy, I began working on London's Law - proposed legislation focused on full informed consent, accountability, and other important protections for children and families involved with the mental health system.
