Come here, on the upper level I felt like I was at the UN in Geneva with the tall windows and marble, overlooking the Stanley Theatre. Coffee good. Great place for a coffee or hot chocolate beverage. Was disappointed they did not have tea but Juliette's chocolate was good. Went with friends and it is a quiet place where you can view many of the historic buildings in downtown Utica like the Stanley. This place is a coffee lover's dream! Don't be like me though and get coffee to-go on your first visit. Order your drinks and pastries, and have a seat. The experience and presentation will be worth it! When I visited for the second time, I decided it was time to truly experience Joseph Putrello's incredible coffee coconcoctions. I ordered the Velvet Coffee - whipped espresso and ice with the choice of vanilla, caramel or pistachio syrup. I asked if they could do the cherry syrup instead since I saw it was used in another drink and thankfully they said yes. It was served in a martini glass and was not only picturesque but incredibly delicious too. I highly recommend trying one of their coffee specialty drinks. Next time, I'll definitely order a pastry. I feel like this is a coffee bar where you get the best experience if you stay. Many of the drinks are made to be served in a cocktail glass. Alas, the seating area does not have outlets, so we could not stay for a day of studying. I got the bicherin with an extra shot of espresso for a total of 3 shots. It's an interesting drink, with chocolate, heavy cream, and the espresso had an almost fruity flavor to it? It was a pretty good drink. That being said, it ran me $10 and didn't even fill up the to-go cup it was in (I see why they tend to serve in cocktail glasses). It was very rich. It was neither hot nor cold as the heavy cream isn't warmed before being added to the hot espresso. Overall, I'd come back with my laptop charged as the space is really pretty. These people have a great social media presence! I live 2 hours away and have dreaming about going here since I 1st saw their posts on a 518 restaurant Facebook group. When I found out I'd be driving through the area, I knew this would be my 1st stop. On a Sunday morning, I easily found street parking. The barista recommended the caramelcinno (spelling?) and it was delicious and had the best presentation. The space is bright and open. First visit, and it was great. The service was excellent. We tried both the hot and cold chocolate drinks and they were loved. We also had a cappuccino and pumpkin spice latte which were excellent. I had a bambalinoa with vanilla filling - fantastic and would recommend a visit just for this even if not stopping in for a coffee. Superbly decorated minimal space. Wonderful menu and it was nice to watch them make the drinks from the second floor balcony with seating. Great spot for expresso done the right way. I was initially going for a double, but then I saw they have affogato, vanilla ice cream with coffee, so I ended up with a single and a dessert (AND a spinach pastry). I'm not a coffee drinker but I did get their hot chocolate and it was really good. Most places take some milk and squirt chocolate syrup and some whipped cream and charge you for basically coco water. These places are just selling chocolate vibes at cafe prices and I cannot stand for it anymore! So I'm willing to believe that Mr. Joseph knew that hot chocolate was not getting it's due respect as a cafe drink and decided to change that. This bistro makes hot chocolate how is supposed to be made...with chocolate. The coco was rich, bitter, sweet and warm. It that like a 60-70% coco bar that they melted in the cup then added milk and some whipped cream. This is how hot chocolate is supposed to taste! I almost got chocolate waisted! Lol To top it off, I got a lemon cheesecake and it was so light and fluffy with a really good crust. This is shop is not playing when it comes to quality and flavor. read more

The second time coming here, and it's always a great experience. It's a small European-style coffee shop located across from the Staley Theatre. I got the Affagato since I like espresso and ice cream. I can the taste was different but a good different. Also, the baked goods were great, no complaints. I don't remember the name but pastry that had the jelly inside of it. I would highly recommend trying. The staff is friendly, they always greet when someone comes in the door. Excellent service! Our barista, Paige greeted us, took excellent care of us, and crafted delicious coffee beverages for us to enjoy. The atmosphere was clean and modern while maintaining that classic coffee shop nostalgia. Love this place, nice bright spot. Coffee is good and the nicely crafted drinks are very appealing. Bit pricey but worth trying. BAKE GOODS in the other hand so far is being a hit or miss for me. I had a couple of cannolis one they and they were good, not amazing but good. Next day I was very disappointed with 4 ($4.95) Croissants. They tasted old and not even close to a high scale croissant (I hate to do this but I need to compare them to a BJ's croissant). If you're going to charge $4.95 for a Croissant it better be good. If it was only for the baked goods I would give this place 2 starts. But remember I've only being here twice. read more

Saw it on WKTV as new coffee place in downtown Utica. I had the chance to go check it out. I was impressed by the setup inside. Lots of room for distancing and crowds(when Covid-19 is over). I was greeted very warmly and staff was very friendly, polite, and yet professional. I ordered a mocaccino (16oz.). As the segment stated on WKTV stated, it was very well prepared and tasted pretty good. Then, maybe I considered the fact that maybe I am too old. I'm saying this cause it was about $7, for a 16 oz. cup. Kinda pricey drink(some mixed drinks in bars are cheaper). Considering space for customers in ratio to size of preparation area, i wondered the logic. Starbucks in New Hartford, has a massive customer base. They have space, size, and staff to accommodate. Plus, drinks are cheaper. Convenience is the draw. Even if this barista is open after hours, when the other 2 coffee places downtown close, and even though they are directly across from the Stanley Theater, if this place gets a crowd at once, I highly doubt people are going to wait to be served. I learned something watching Bar Rescue w/ John Taffer. About the the cost and value of space. I have no doubt, the drinks taste good. $7 is still a bit much(or I'm too outdated). I always heard, if you want to open a new restaurant, better luck would be in Syracuse. Right now, in Utica, during Covid, when cheaper options are available, i don't believe this place will last long. Why is it when Utica has coffee, pizza, hamburger, chicken, etc. places already; somebody feels need to add another one, and offers nothing exceptional about it that makes it stand out? I do feel Joseph Putrello Barista Bar, put thought, consideration, and pride into this place(it shows everywhere). Those three things came from what the owner wanted, beyond what was practical and realistic for the area. Maybe if they did a comedy club inside of it/but why do that if across the street from the Stanley? Service and drink was good. I have no complaints at all. Bit pricey. read more

People are going to rag on this place because the coffee is a little bit more expensive than other places. But it is probably some of the best coffee you'll get in the area, especially if you are really into coffee. They have excellent pastries, especially the Nutella filled croissant. those are expensive as well, but the portions are huge and you could easily split it between three people. More than the coffee, the staff is really attentive. Usually there is only one barista working and even when it's fairly busy I've never waited too long. I usually stop here once or twice a week and even wearing a mask the baristas recognize me and know my order. read more
