FANTASTIC 'old guard' gentleman's clothing store - but also up on all styles. I have two speeds for dress (High and Off), and went in one Sunday morning in the 'Off' mode.. holes in my jeans.. ratty shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Was looking to have a suit made. I was met by Julian who treated me like I was the most important person in the room. He showed me fabric samples and then did something I rarely see - he left me alone to look without pestering me, checking back on occasion to see if I had questions. I made one return trip to the store for a final selection. From pleats and cuffs, to surgeon's cuffs - I got everything I wanted and prices were extremely fair. The gentleman who does the final finish in the store (please forgive - I can't remember his name) is outstanding! I've since purchased additional items, and having shopped on Worth Avenue on Palm Beach, I can tell you that for the price, there is no compromising on quality. Four of us in Portland for a quick overnight trip. One of our friends was looking for an in between seasons jacket and specifically wanted to come to Joseph's. All in all, it was a great experience. Excellent customer service Our friend ended up buying a cost from the 50% off area in the basement. The salesman told him about the craftsmanship and uniqueness of the cost and made a few recommendations based on his observations of my friend's preferences. Excellent customer service which isn't always the case when shopping the discounted area in a higher end store. Beautifully merchandised and great service. I'd definitely shop there again. read more

Superb service! It was time to get a suit, and I was greeted with professionalism. I didn't even have to describe what I wanted for the look of the suit because the staff was so well versed in what to do. Was not pressured at all and was given a very thorough and personalized fitting. Would shop here again. Great experience and very cool set up having the suits downstairs for a more out of view fitting away from distractions. A much better experience than going to a Chain place. They took the time and have you leaving very confident. They are also very honest about the items in the store. After all suits are pricey and are an investment purchase, this place was a good experience from front door to register. read more

This is not a place myself or anyone I know would shop at. But, I was looking to help a gentleman get a well fitted pair of pants and a couple shirts. I stated right off, we had a budget of $400-$500 bucks. With a big smile, we were directed to one shelf with 4 different types of pants. I was infromed they run from $100 to a bit over $200. I said ok, well we could do a couple pairs of pants and a couple tops. He understood we were on a budget and had me follow him, down stairs to where the shirts were half off. Fast forward to checking out...2 pairs of pants and 4 shirts. Over $700 bucks. Hello, what part of budget, do we not understand?! I agreed to just take the two pair of pants. Some of this is my own fault. I trusted someone else to help us with deciding which would fit our needs. All said and done, Two pair of pants $435 bucks. The gentleman, repeatedly stated, how happy he was to do business with us. After I left I really felt like a heel. I should have pushed back. But, I didn't. When I returned to pick up the pants, I just needed to express my frustrations. Explaining that I had made it clear, we were on a budget and how I felt like I had ripped my friend off. His response was "Then why did you come here" I told him, I wanted a well fitting pair of pants. I made it clear when we came in, we were not your typical costumers and the amount of money we had, and that we were in hopes of get two pair of pants and a couple shirts. But, wow you sold us the most expensive pairs and made it very clear you were happy to do business with us. Repeating several times, how happy you were!! I bet you were!! He stated, they were tailor made...ummmm you hemmed them!! Anyway, some of this is most likely my own fault for not asking the cost, and for not calling the deal off, once I found out the cost. Lesson learned! Right up there with car salesmen!! PS: The pants are very good quality!! They were not rude or pushy. But, we were not important to them....making the almighty buck was!! Understood. This is an update on my review of Joseph's clothing store in Portland ME. The initial review was done while alterations of my jacket were in progress. I purchased a jacket from Joseph's clothing about a year ago. The jackets that they carry run small and Joseph Redman told me that I should get a size larger and they would alter it to fit. I questioned this approach and asked about a custom made jacket. Mr. Redman discouraged me and said that that was a "process". I took the fast and easy way out. The alterations of the larger jacket were a bigger job than either of us anticipated. The jacket arrived and was altered. When I tried it on, it still needed some work so I took it back for more alterations. I willingly brought the jacket back to Joseph's 4 times when I was in Portland for other reasons, and worked with Jeff who recognized the problems and tried to help using photographs without having their tailor Paul fit the jacket personally. I finally realized that this approach was not working and I made a special trip to Portland (150 mile 4 hour trip) to actually meet with Paul. Paul, who is a fine tailor made major revisions to the jacket. When I came back a week later to pick the jacket up, I noticed that while the alterations had corrected most of the problems, the back of the jacket did not fit properly (the underlining material of the suit extended visibly below the collar). When I mentioned this, I was informed that I was "picky" and that they would not alter the jacket again. They agreed that it did not fit properly, but were not willing to fix the problem. Unfortunately, neither Jeff nor Paul was present. This was to be a fine jacket which would give me pleasure when I wore it. Unfortunately, it will now only remind me of the problems, poor fit, and disappointment with Joseph's that I wound up with. On the plus side, they carry really nice clothing and if you can buy something off the rack or with minor adjustments, and are not "picky", it is a good place to shop. read more

Joseph's is perhaps the nicest clothing shop I have ever been to. The attention to detail is superb. The clothes are arranged and beautifully displayed in ways I have never seen. The quality of the merchandise is stunning. (You know great style and fabrics when you see and feel them). I found articles of clothing here that I could not find anywhere else. Even the staircase in the store is quite something. I was not surprised to find out that the owner has had the longest running single owned business in Portland. Extremely poor customer service. This morning I went into Joseph's to get my measurements for a suit. I explained to the older gentleman working the morning of Thursday January 28,2016 that I would need to be fitted for the suit here and I was having the suit produced in a different state and would be back to have the suit tailored to my body. First to give you a description, this gentleman resembled Richard gere in such a way I could only assume he tries daily to replicate Richards look. My first interaction with this gentleman was "can you hold on" which was fine I understand your busy, although I was the only customer in the store of 2 employees. I then explained my situation. His response, "why aren't you buying your suit here?" Well sir, I've got a suit guy in California who gets me extremely low prices. His response, "how much is it going to cost" once I gave him the answer he smirked and laughed under his breath. Almost as to say, must be a cheap suit. After answering him I then asked myself, what does this have to do with getting my measurements? Once I explained all of this to him he informed me there would be a charge to get My measurements. This came as a surprise to me as everywhere I've called about measurements informed me there was no charge. I offered him the guarantee I would have myself and my 5 groomsmen have all of our suits tailored here if he could save the $12 fee. His response was no. Poor business decision. I then started to rebuttals him and he interrupted me and said "good luck with your wedding" extremely rude and condescending. Maybe this gentleman didn't like the way I was dressed because I had on a sweatshirt and sweatpants in a "high end" store? Looks can be deceiving. What this gentleman didn't know is that every Christmas season I purchase two gift cards of a large amount for my father and uncle who actually like the store. Needless to say, after my experience today I will not be purchasing these gifts any more nor will I allow any of my groomsmen to have their suits tailored by Joseph's. Not only has this employee left an extremely poor taste about Joseph's on my mouth but he has also lost his employer future business from myself and my friends who I will inform of this situation. Over all this gentleman ha extremely poor customer service skills, thankfully he has a second career as a Richard gere if he can not be a valuable asset to Joseph's in the future.
