I was fortunate enough to have known Peter, who was the consummate gentleman as well as a keen observer of fashion trends but always with an eye toward good taste. There is a fine line between being fashionably current and too trendy. If you want to be up-to-date but also with that understated elegance that denotes the classics, this is where you want to buy your next garment. Today Peter's daughter Neenu runs the store and she is her father's daughter, always charming and so knowledgeable. I have to say, sometimes I will just drop in to say hi even if I don't need anything. In addition to carrying some fabulous clothing lines, they also perform miracles with alterations of clothing you might already own. They are faster and do a better job than any of the other tailors I have used in the area. This is a New York or San Fransisco quality haberdasher but with the down-home touch of Portland, Maine. If you live here and you care about your appearance, you have no excuse -- if you are from away, make it a point to check them out. I needed some pants and a blazer altered and found Peter's store on Yelp. Peter was the consummate professional. He started by describing how he would do the alterations and gave me the price and, after I agreed, he carefully took my measurements. He also completed the work two days early! The pants look great -- he tapered the leg, took in the waist, and shortened them. The blazer also fits perfectly now, with no weird pinching. You can tell that Peter is old school -- he's been in business for decades, and his walls are covered with signed photos of prominent Mainers who have used his services (including Senators Mitchell and Cohen). His services are a bit on the pricier side, but if you want someone who will do an exemplary job with no shortcuts, Peter is your man. read more

Not just for weddings- Peter is an old fashioned, attention to detail tailor. He will make fancy suits, casual suits, wedding suits, and of course shirts, pants, vests and so on. My husband picked up one of his suits today. This one was Donegal tweed, smashing. It had travel secret pockets and lovely finishing and strangers actually commented on his suit when he walked into their shops. These are clothes for life. Let him know what you are looking for and discuss your needs and preferences. So worth the wait to have these custom duds.
