I contacted Josh after getting discouraged by sky high quotes, or the typical contractors that either never respond or don't show up at all. He was quick to schedule a meet up to go over quotes. The attention to detail and willingness to work with my many scattered ideas made working with Josh simple and straightforward. The fences are beautiful, and we even have separate styles going on between the front metal fence and gates, the back gates, livestock fencing, and the side wood fence. Over 550' of fence later, all were executed beautifully. Finally my dogs/goats/sheep are all secure to roam the property as they please! The work done was on time besides a couple hang ups that had to do with unexpected wood shortages after the fires, but even then we weren't off by anything significant. The work that was promised was done, and when there was a miscommunication error it was promptly fixed with zero hassle or unfair changes in pricing. I actually felt bad with how quickly and willing they were to fix something when it was really my fault for not explaining what I wanted well enough. I was even apologizing to his crew as well who carried on without a fuss lol! We were up front about our budget, and we worked together on ideas until we came up with something that would still check all the boxes but not break the bank. We enjoyed working with him so much we have gone on to hire him for multiple other jobs like retaining walls and sheds, and have quotes lined up for future projects when our budgets can fit it as well! Our neighbors were also impressed with the fence and have since hired him for their own personal projects. Josh really goes far above and beyond to make sure the customer is happy, so I'm surprised to see people leaving bad reviews since he's all about making sure it was a positive and fair experience. When word of mouth is so incredibly important for small businesses like this, I feel like it's important to be honest and give credit where credit is due, and if there's an issue see if it can be worked out before making that final judgement on a bad review. I recently hired Josh to build fence behind our house. The old fence was failing. Josh's estimate was not the lowest but wasn't much higher than than the lowest and seemed reasonable to me. What sold him, was that he said he does pay attention to detail, and pointed out some good workmanship which I had done prior. Josh postponed my appointment once, but it was not an issue since it was not an emergency and the postponement went over a weekend. The material was delivered to my driveway, on Monday and Josh showed up with his team on Tuesday. They worked professionally and many times asked how I would like certain things done that could have been done in different ways. i.e.where to put the door, how high, swing in or out). We hired Josh to install about 75+ feet of black iron fencing at our business. The busy Post-pandemic supply/labor issues slowed things down but in the end the fence was installed well last year and price was decent. Josh operates out of San Benito county if I remember correctly so Watsonville is as far north as he likes to go, fyi. He was very accommodating and willing to fix some minor issues for free. We recently used Josh Gates Construction to build a fence on both sides of our house, requesting that it match the existing fence at the back. Josh and his team did an excellent job throughout the entire process. From the time of the initial quote through completion of the project they were exceptional. When providing a quote, he provided different options and explained the benefits of each of the different options. (I'll also note that all options were extremely reasonably priced). Once we decided which to do, he was able to schedule the work and get it done quickly. His team was professional, hardworking, and let us know what was going on throughout the processes. He also helped keep the neighbors updated when the work would affect them. When we had questions, he quickly provided answers so that we could understand the entire process. In addition to the great customer service, the work product is spectacular. The fence matches the existing back fence with no noticeable difference. The fence came out looking great and is well built. The back of the property includes a pretty significant slope that many people who provided quotes indicated would be a huge problem to address. They did a great job with it, making sure the fence is even and there are not spots along the bottom of the fence for our dog to dig out. If I have any other similar projects, I will definitely use them. I cannot recommend him enough. read more

I've gone back and forth about posting this, because I know that Josh has been busy. However, after reading how he has responded to other clients quickly, I have to share my experience that was the opposite. Let me start by saying that Josh was super nice and personable- I would have loved to work with him based on his first impressions and the recommendations I have read. I had Josh out to give me a quote for a section of chain link repair in the beginning of August. It took a week to get the official quote, and when I emailed him back that we would like to proceed, it took another several days to get a response. I asked him when he would like to schedule to come and get it finished- he said the first week of September. He never committed or called to confirm after that email in mid-August, so I emailed him at the end of the week he had said he was going to have a crew show up (and never did.) I didn't get a response. I then called him back the next week, and still no response. It's good that a local business is so busy, but I really would have appreciated a call or an email letting me know that he was simply too busy for a small job like this. read more
