The group photos show a bunch of kids who were clearly made comfortable with the process of being photographed and the portraits of our son really capture his personality. I am ecstatic that we chose Joshua to shoot our wedding this past weekend in the Catskills. He is the ideal vendor: calm, organized, communicative and professional. When I was running around the week before our wedding, I scheduled calls with all of our vendors to make sure we had everything we needed and everyone else had a laundry list of things for me - except Joshua. You can rest assured that he's got everything covered which is such a relief when planning a wedding. We loved that he's not a fan of corny group shots and loved the "broody" tone of his photos which is why we booked him. But after viewing the first round of photos he gave to us from our wedding I see there is so much more - he found pockets of light and areas of our venue that I would have walked right past. Some of the photos I was skeptical about during the shoot (like standing in an outcropping of ferns) are my favorite. I was also shocked to get the first wave of photos two days after our wedding. They were everything I had hoped for and they aren't even retouched yet. Also looking through the crowd shots - I think he managed to capture every single one of our guests in a meaningful way. I am so impressed with the moments he caught on film and the happy expressions he captured on everyone's faces. I also appreciated that as the night was ending, he checked in with me to see if there was anything else I wanted captured. We decided to skip NYC city hall and pop up to Beacon/Newburgh for the day to have a quiet ceremony in the beautiful countryside. What an excellent decision. Joshua helped us connect with local vendors to make the afternoon special but kept it low key and intimate. He also scouted some lovely locations for photos and the ceremony. And the photos! So gorgeous, a wonderful keepsake of a special day for us. The turnaround time for the images was immediate and not a day has gone by that my partner and I haven't looked through the photos together. If you're thinking city hall or or big blowout but it's stressing you out, trust your gut and go with the romantic, intimate ceremony in the woods. 13/10 would do again. read more

Joshua was absolutely wonderful to work with! When originally planning our wedding, we did not intend to have a videographer, but as the pandemic kept many of our guests from being able to attend, we reached out to Joshua last minute to see if he would be able to film the ceremony and key events for us, so we could share them with everyone who couldn't be there in person. From the very beginning, working with Joshua was an absolute pleasure. We started by setting up a Skype call and just chatting about what we were looking for and the services he could provide--he and his team do it all. He also quickly provided two past references that showed us their galleries and explained their experience working with him. We ended up booking Joshua along with a second photographer, videographer, & photo booth. When we met Joshua for our engagement shoot, he was very easy to talk to and fun to work with. He worked quickly and was able to direct us through the engagement shoot getting all the shots we wanted as well as ones that he thought would look good. On the day of the wedding, it was as if Joshua and his team were not even there. His camera doesn't make any shutter noises so even during quiet times during the ceremony you didn't hear him. As a matter of fact, he blended in so well that we didn't even know where he was at times. Just like at the ceremony, Joshua and his team blended into the reception taking great shots but also somehow were always around when a group wanted to take a posed shot! Turnaround time on the photos and video were great. We received a first look preview of photos within 2 weeks and our highlight video the week after. All photos were fully edited within a month! I can't speak highly enough about working with Joshua and the quality of his work. He is well worth every penny he charges. read more

Joshua was a complete pleasure to work with and we are so glad that we had him as our wedding photographer! Professionally, Joshua is very prompt in responding to emails, and he makes himself available to attend to any questions, concerns, etc. As a photographer, Joshua has a great eye for capturing gorgeous shots. We held our wedding at the Roundhouse at Beacon Falls in Beacon, NY, and we had wanted to take pictures on the grounds of the Dia. Unfortunately, when we showed up, they were closing. Joshua suggested we take a picture in the parking lot and I thought he was crazy but it turned into one our favorite pictures. In fact, we used it as our Christmas card pic! People always ask where we took the picture and when we tell them a parking lot, they can't believe it! Joshua has a real knack for capturing great moments, and he is not in your face about it. There's nothing about him that's "wedding photographer cheesy." He doesn't go around sticking his camera in everyone's faces which is so appreciated when you just want your guests to be having fun. We ended up with around 1000 pictures that perfectly encapsulated the romance and FUN of our wedding day! I HIGHLY recommend Joshua. I also recommend adding the video to your package. My fiancee and I had a picked out a location in the mountains that is special to us both. We weren't sure how it would turn out as it is starting to become spring but nothing is blooming and the snow that is still around is not very fresh. The pictures turned out fabulous! The background wasn't distracting from our pictures but looks awesome and very well blended. The quality of the photographs is amazing and we got to view them all online by the next night! We are really pleased with how they turned out. I also appreciated that Josh encouraged a lot of natural poses (i.e. photographed as we interacted like we normally would) but then gave great coaching when a chin needed to be tilted down or head cocked in a different direction, which resulted in very stunning photos. read more

My now husband and I were very particular with how we wanted our wedding day and photography. From the beginning we knew we wanted amazing, more candid photos of the day instead of more posed, formal portraits. I stumbled on Joshua's website and was floored. Just go and look for yourself, his images truly are amazing! We booked him for our May 2014 wedding and he was fantastic. I do think that Joshua is not for certain brides. He was exactly what we wanted, but again if you want lots of portraits, posed pictures, an hour long photo sesh with your husband, then Joshua is not for you. He truly is a photojournalist at your wedding. (I feel like a lot of photographers these days say they are but are not...) Now don't get me wrong, we do have portraits and bridal party shots, but those aren't his focus. He really is mostly interested in capturing organic moments during the day. If you want to recreate a photo you saw in a magazine or pinterest, he is not for you. (And I only say all this to save some brides time in the research process!) We also loved Joshua because he has such a calming, relaxed demeanor. He would never interrupt and ask to take guests' pictures (I don't love that) but if a guest asked for one he would obviously oblige. He was basically nowhere and everywhere at once and I loved that. The idea of being the center of attention for a whole day was overwhelming and scary to me, and Joshua's style of shooting made me feel so comfortable. He actually did pull me away once during the reception because the light was great over the by the window and by that time I was so comfortable with him I was excited and happy to get some solo shots with him! Honestly, I can't say enough about him and his work. The ONLY reason I didn't give him the full five stars (other than yelp doesn't let you give a 4.5 rating) is that sometimes it can be a couple of days to hear back from him (at least when I booked him two years ago). But the important thing is I never felt that I couldn't trust/rely on him both before and on the wedding day. I just wish I had hired him to shoot our rehearsal dinner! (And my mother was the first to say that! Both our families seriously loved the images as much as we did.) read more

My husband and I had a terrible experience with Joshua Brown. We initially hired him because we loved his photography on his website. We also loved the pictures and videos he did for my friend's wedding, and that friend even vouched for him. We got in touch with him, and had a nice interview with him. That was the last of our nice experience with him... Major things that we did not like: - He did not photograph any of the bridal party pictures, stating that it was "too sunny and bright" and wanted to wait till the sun came down a little. Never happened. just a few bridal party pics in our bridal suite. Don't photographers carry equipment to help with such things as brightness? This breaks my heart to NO END and I have been bitter about it ever since. - Rude to guests. Many guests complained to me after our wedding on his attitude. - Poor communication- sometimes it would take days/over a week to get back to me. - Didn't know his contract: 1. the week of the wedding, he asked me about how I was going to arrange for him to get to my wedding, but i clearly paid transportation fees..so i thought he would handle that? 2. tried to leave about an hour early 3. didnt send me a video I ordered and when i complained, sent me a video that was clearly hastily put together. - While some of the pictures ARE nice, the majority look like they could have been done by an amateur. FOR INSTANCE: my sister's head is cut off in a picture where the bridesmaids are just standing for a group shot.... who does that?? (this is just one example) - We hired 2 photographers (joshua was one of the photogs) and 2 videographers---- i told Joshua that I wanted 1 photographer to capture general traditional photographs and the other to capture pics in a more journalistic style... candids if you will.. examples were like my groom's reaction when he saw me for the first time in the wedding gown. Does it surprise you by now if i told you that this photo did not take place? Other pictures also missing include: one of my bridesmaids going down the aisle, my piano players, my Scripture readers, key people in our wedding. I mean these would be more traditional shots that would be typical in a wedding. Instead, we have a lot of portraits of people's faces... They look stone cold because they are all sitting there watching the ceremony happening. Where were all the pictures of the joy and fun people had at the ceremony... at the reception? no shots of the overall atmosphere of my reception and ceremony. I mean, Im not a photographer, but I know what shots are important! Really, what was the point of having two photographers? I remember looking over and seeing Joshua help out the 2 videographers.. Shouldn't he have hired people who knew what they were doing? and take better pics at my wedding? like they were hired to do? and the wedding ceremony video was as if someone just used a camcorder from the 1990s. The sound was awful. Oh and I had sent him a list of group shots I wanted with my guests. He did not organize anything, and it ended up being very disorganized and so either a lot of groups were smooshed together or not in any pictures altogether. - The poses that he made us do were the same 3 damn poses (pardon my language) he made us do in our engagement photos. And at our engagement photo shoot, he told me one of my ideas was "cheesy" and didn't do it. Otherwise, if you can get past those 3 poses, those pictures were pretty good.. prolly cause it was a cloudy day. cause as you remember, he didnt photograph our bridal party pics because it was too sunny. THE ONE THING that was good....my wedding same day edit and finalized edit video. but even that was messed up when he spelled my name wrong. Seemed like it would have been a simple fix, and when asked to fix it, he somehow took out the perfect opening scene that it was in and when i asked him to put it back, he had no idea what I was talking about, and replaced it with something that makes this no longer the perfect wedding video. It was a very expensive service, and it makes me sick to my stomach that I paid that much for such bad service and quality. If you knew how hard we saved for this wedding (i am a social worker and at the time, my husband was a full time grad school student), to make sure we had these beautiful moments captured, it would make you sick too. Especially when you know he does have talent and chose not to utilize that said talent on the biggest day of your life. read more

What I am most struck by, when reviewing Josh's portfolio, is his ability to distill the emotions and personalities of his subjects while capturing them with a vision that is uniquely his own. His photographs are artistic while maintaining a warmth and sense of humor that is rare in this type of photography. I work in the film world, and find that his photographs always tell a story in a beautiful, cinematic way. He has a deep technical understanding of his craft that allows him to capture your special day, just the way that you remember it (or don't, as it can be a bit of a whirlwind). On the business side of things, he is a pleasure to work with and is the consummate professional. His soft spoken, jovial nature puts everyone at ease, which allows him to capture some very intimate moments without ever being obtrusive. The moment we arrived at Joshua's website, we knew that we had found our photographer. Josh's photos had us laughing, smiling and going "awww..." He captures not only the sights of the day, but more importantly the emotions. His demeanor is calm, professional and yet friendly. Out of all our vendors, Joshua was consistently the quickest to respond. On the day of the wedding, he was unobtrusive and yet managed to capture hundreds of memorable shots of us, our friends and our family. My wife called him the "sniper" photographer. He even put together a slideshow of the day's photos for our guests to enjoy during the reception (and then took photos of the guests' expressions while they watched the slideshow). Photography was one area where we were willing to spend, and although Josh's services weren't the cheapest around, we are most pleased with the results. Josh is an exceptionally talented photographer. He pairs a masterful command of the technical aspects of photography with the eye of an artist and the instincts of a photojournalist. His sense of composition and use of light are sophisticated, warm, and nuanced with creative details. When I needed headshots on short notice, Josh was quick to accommodate. It took no time at all for him to get the shots he needed--and he made it so easy for me. By the time I got home, he'd already emailed me his photo selects. To my complete surprise, the photos were far better than I could have ever imagined. He's a true ace at portraiture. In November 2010, we had Joshua shoot our wedding in Central Park. We scoured the web looking for a photographer who would take professional-quality images, but was still interested in being creative, rather than just another standard wedding photographer. Joshua really stood out. Since our wedding was rather intimate (only 20 guests), we wanted someone to capture the personality of all the guests who attended. When my (now) husband and I were looking for wedding photographers, we had a lot of trouble finding that somewhat casual meets classic meets professional wedding photographer that we had always envisioned. We were just about to go with someone who we knew we weren't going to love, when I saw Joshua's photos on the Brooklyn Bride blog. We immediately booked our date and never looked back. Josh Brown is a decent photographer, when he bothers to show up and take the pictures. My experience of him at my best friend's wedding was that he was lazy and not very friendly. He spent a lot of the time leaning against the wall, looking very bored. I actually recommended him (my photographer was busy and passed his name along), hence the mea culpa here. The two stars are because some of the photos he took are quite nice--the missing there stars are because you cannot count on him and because he is not a fun person to have to work with. read more

We hired Joshua as both our photographer and videographer for our wedding. He used HD quality pictures and videos and it made all the difference. The video is like watching a documentary about our wedding day! When we were researching our options, Joshua's videos sold us and we were not disappointed. He also offered a "video booth." It was like a photo booth but with videos that our friends and family could leave us messages on. That was a big hit with the guests and we love the end result! On top of the amazing videos, the pictures were wonderful. Joshua caught so many great moments throughout the day. The pictures weren't forced so everything came out natural. All the colors just popped. We were able to pick 100 pictures for our wedding album and it was SO hard to narrow it down to that. Joshua took over a thousand pictures! We were able to receive the soft copies of all the pictures, so we can go back and look at them whenever we would like. Joshua was easy to work with and we loved all the pictures and videos. Joshua Brown is an extraordinary photographer. He brings a beautiful balance of calm and professionalism to the day. It was a comfort to know he was there and I didn't spend a second of the day worried about the photographs. He was responsive and warm and easy to communicate with and managed to bring his own perspective to the photos without ever ignoring what we had talked about and asked for. The photographs are stunning. He's an artist when it comes to candids. If you're looking for a strong, inspired photojournalist-style photographer you can't go wrong here.
