Todd helped us identify our patterns, reconnect, and build a foundation of love and support that helped us navigate our differences better. We had tried out two other therapists before Todd that weren't a great fit. They mainly just listened, said they "heard us", and asked us questions. Todd, on the other hand, is much more effective. He guided us in practicing connection during each session, he gave us exercises to do during the week, and he helped both of us practice better calming and communication methods. I really liked how he balanced being proactive and also listened and truly understood where we both were coming from. After a year of therapy, we feel like we're in a good place so we're ending our time with him. I'm sad to not have regular check ins with Todd because he's been such a positive support in our relationship but I'm happy that my husband and I are in a strong place. I went first for anxiety around school, and then he's always been a ground and a rock for whatever there was to work on. We've worked through relationship things, work things, trauma things. I haven't had other therapy so I don't have much comparison, but I do really appreciate that it is unlike anything I see on TV. I don't feel analyzed, judged, given suggestions of what is going on for me. I feel he is radically present and gentle, and allows for me to make my own discoveries. To learn something and have it feel true feels wildly more authentic and empowering than being told something. Like an extremely attentive and patient presence that's hard to find anywhere else, especially within myself. A session doesn't feel overly soft nor hard, and I usually leave feeling much more alive and grounded. And while I'm not given all the answers, he does give really practical strategies, perspectives and suggestions. I am very grateful for that. David always has made himself very available. As part of going to mediation with my ex husband/co parent we were ordered or recommended by the…read moremediator to attend 8 hours of co parent counseling. After much back and forth about whether to attend a councilor in our medical network or not we landed on Dr. Hoffman at Amity. Dr. Hoffman is out of network and came highly recommended by both of our lawyers. I will say, yes, Dr. Hoffman is great. I started out in this situation very positive about him. If I could afford it, Id see Dr. Hoffman as a personal therapist. He's very good and very down to earth. I trusted him. Here is the down downside to this type of therapy. If the other person is not open to therapy, responsive to therapy and also has alleged addiction issues, you are not going to go anywhere with therapeutic resources. I don't recommend it in any form of joint therapy. This includes co parent counseling, marriage therapy, family therapy. If the court orders it, go and follow the instruction of the Dr. but do not get your hopes up. Focus on making yourself better. A few things I discovered while going through this process is nothing that is talked about or agreed upon or disagreed upon is inadmissible in court. This become more obvious when dealing with a high conflict person. I found that as the Dr. didn't take notes on the sessions. I'm a note taker. I took bullet pointed notes on what was discussed at each session. One Friday session there would be positive progress in what seemed like good co parenting cohesiveness happening. Then Sunday night or Monday morning everything that was discussed is thrown out and its another nonsensical fight or disagreement was launched again. When we went back to counseling to "Try Again" the Dr. couldn't remember what was discussed previously. It was quite frustrating. Come to these sessions with zero expectations positive or negative. If you come thinking there will be some kind of break through you will be full of resentment/disappointment when its over because it goes no where. If you're dealing with any high conflict/alleged addict go to an Al-Anon meeting or a Nar-Anon meeting and work on yourself. Focus on yourself and recovering from what is going on and if I had to guess, has been going on for a long time. Your children will be better in the end. You cant help your kids until you put your oxygen mask on first. Remember you wont be dealing with this forever. We went to over the 8 hours of court ordered sessions. Having a lawyer is your best option in a high conflict situation. That being said if both of you are open and willing to go to therapy, come to Dr. Hoffman. I can see the possibilities. I can see the work and tools that he has to help. Again, if I could afford him Id see him personally once a week. If you're dealing with the other type of situation, hire a lawyer and move on.

During that time I was impressed with his blend of ease with difficult situations as well as his very sound background in the theories behind what we were practicing. Since our program ended, he has deepened his educational base by adding earning his doctorate, through five years of intensive study and clinical experience. As a result, he is my most frequent resource when I need professional consultation and collaboration. I have had the pleasure to give several parent education talks with him and these are always very well received. I refer clients to him because I know that he has the skills to uncover the sources of distress and can work collaboratively with his clients to develop a plan to reduce symptoms. He really only cares if you can pay his fees. He repeatedly bragged about how tough he was as he'd worked with hardened criminals. (I was not at all interested in this aspect of things as I was not there to hear about his life but to seek assistance in a nasty divorce.) During a session when my former husband threatened me with physical harm he acted as though it was no big deal. When I told him that I would request his participation in our court case to give testimony or write an affidavit he flat out refused and told me that even if the court supoenaed him he would not attend. He was supposed to later serve as family therapist for our children, which he did but he was not objective and allowed their father into the space to intimidate them. The father eventually ended up manipulating the therapist himself to do his bidding with the children. Our children said they did not feel secure with him as he allowed their father (who is very controlling) to infiltrate their safe space. When I refused to return to therapy with this man, he told my children that I was unreliable! Two of our three children fled from sessions with him, but he's gotten hold of our older daughter and has continued to do the father's bidding by supporting lies about me by affirming the stories the father has told him to tell. He has lost all independence as a therapist and instead is in the pocket of the father who has conducted a bitter divorce battle for years. If you see this therapist be sure that you keep control of your case and do not allow him to run amok or capture control of your life! Caveat emptor!!

Dan is a very articulate listener, and a keen and intelligent listener, and provided good feedback. He has ample knowledge about human biology and behavior, and for that, I think he is a skilled psychologist. My main concern was the fact much precious time was devoted to discussing things I never raised. My secondary concern was that the time was not structured (perhaps because it was not structured, it resembled a casual conversation at a bar or between friends at a tennis match). If these two concerns were not prevalent, or greatly reduced, I would change my opinion about the services.

I was extremely depressed with very little energy to put my life back together, and thought about suicide multiple times a day. Wasn't shaving or showering, could barely muster the energy to move around. Also experienced and was worn down by frequent anxiety attacks. Seeing Daniel and learning cognitive behavioral therapy from him and the books/exercises he recommended taught me how to diagnose, manage, and ultimately treat the inaccurate beliefs and cognitions that were leading to my severe depression. After several months of treatment (alongside other efforts of my own) I'm feeling optimistic and able to take on life again. I got on an excellent career track, got back with my girlfriend, and we're going to get engaged in the next couple weeks.
