Four of us have spent the last year or two learning to boulder in a gym - this was our first gym to crag adventure! We thought it would be fun but didn't really know what to expect. Well...Alex was our guide and he was AWESOME. So supportive and positive. A gifted guide and a natural. He belayed for each of us, which made us all infinitely more confident. My friends and I bought a groupon for a 4 hour private climbing tour in Joshua Tree NP, and it was AMAZING! Our guide, Miriam, was so skilled, kind, patient, and excited about climbing that we couldn't have asked for anyone better! She challenged us and encouraged us every step of the way while explaining everything perfectly step by step. This is an overdue review. I've been rock climbing with both Alex and Stephen and had such amazing times; I couldn't recommend more. I have also talked to Rick on the phone multiple times and all employees are so friendly, easy to talk to, and... I mean, just people you'd want to hang with for an afternoon. Climb ON! What can I say about my 6 days books with Rick other then absolutely awesome! I was working in LA for 6weeks and had most Monday's and Tuesday's off so what better way to spend them then in Joshua Tree climbing and taking classes. I am not your normal client when it comes to guided trips. I was looking for some pretty specific things and Rick hit it out of the park by miles! Day 1: a full day of multi pitch climbing (5.7/8ish) Day 2: full day outing with myself and my girlfriend who had NEVER been climbing ever...not an easy task for a guide and Rick killed it I had a blast my girlfriend felt confident and learned a new hobby Day 3: Custom Anchor class Day 4: Custom Anchor class cont. and Top Rope Building Day 5: Review and lead class Day 6: Mulit pitch climbs and leading class Rick was an attentive guide and teacher and I have for SURE greatly improved my climbing technique and skill while with him! On top of his knowledge of climbing and the Joshua Tree area Rick is an awesome human! Loved swapping stories and experiences with him! I booked a quarter-day climb with Rick on May 9th. He was very accommodating, helpful, and professional- and safety was a priority. Great experience! For my 9yr old (Ben's) science project we figured climbing in Joshua Tree would be fun and educational. Rick promptly replied to my call and quickly scheduled guides for the coming Sunday. Julius and Sean were fantastic. They safely guided us up the Cyclops Eye 5.3 route which everyone completed but not without some real work on two obstacles. Athletic adults and selected kids with good climbing experience would enjoy this. Julius suggested we try the more difficult Spagetti-Chili route also. It involves a layback where you have to claw your way hand over hand and foot over foot around the edges of a curved clamshell-shaped layback. While we have climbed extensively indoors we were not well prepared for this. With a lot of encouragement and 100% confidence in our guides, mom, dad, and my 11yr old barely completed this with several retreats. Many thanks to our guides for patiently helping us through this. It was right on the edge of our ability and hugely satisfying to complete. lol, we learned that all the holds we typically avoid when indoor climbing are are actually the stuff you should be working on because you rarely get a nice hand-hold on the rock face. read more

My wife Beth and I just started getting into rock climbing and have only been gym climbing a few times. On our trip to Joshua Tree this April we wanted to learn outdoor top rope climbing, so we made an appointment with JT Guides for a 6 hour session. We met Julius at Quail Springs picnic area at 8am. He was friendly, informative, and very supportive. We both learned and experienced more than we expected. After climbing a few different routes, we asked Julius to teach us a bit more about the equipment used in lead climbing and other knots used. He explained and demonstrated quite a bit about the different types of climbing, how to secure nuts and cams, and more about belaying. We still had some time left, so we followed him to The Cyclops where we hiked up the backside and talked more about climbing while taking in the breathtaking view. read more

I had a rock climbing weekend in Joshua Tree NP with Tiowa Reynolds as my instructor for 2 days. I was extremely happy with the weekend and I can honestly say that this is the best climbing experience of my life. I had climbed 25 years ago and needed to start up again. I had an incredibly positive experience for the following 3 reasons. First, Tiowa transferred a wealth of knowledge about climbing techniques, how to set safety equipment in order to lead climbs and all the various techniques that you can use to set an anchor for a top rope. I had no idea that there were so many different knots and possibilities. That will help me get back into traditional climbing and lead climbs again. He was very patient and instructive and it was all very relevant. He seemed to enjoy sharing his knowledge and passion for climbing. Secondly, he was very adapt at understanding what type of climbing I liked and showed me many different interesting types of climbs. I really liked the variety he picked. Part of his skills was to guage how to push me out of my comfort zone in successive climbs and yet no more then I always succeeded with each climb. That meant that I felt I grew a lot from the first insecure climbing at 8 am on day one to the last very exposed 5.8 moves, 12 to 15 meters up on a almost vertical pillar. I was honested scared by the exposure but Tiowa guaged I could do it. And I could. So I felt like a much better climber after two days. Thirdly, I enjoyed his company and we could talk about lots of things along the way and the conversation never felt ackward. All in all an excellent experience and I can only recommend Tiowa and Joshua Tree climbing guides that I also have good experiences with in the past. read more

I got a Groupon for 4 hours with a private climbing guide in Joshua Tree National Park. What a bargain! It would have been worth paying full price. Our guide, Zeke, knew his stuff. His unobtrusive instruction and choice of climbs was sensitive to our different ability levels, so we each were able to push our climbing technique. We got what we paid for and more. Zeke behaved throughout with impeccable courtesy and professionalism (not coincidentally, this company clearly states its 48 hr cancellation policy both on the Groupon and on its website.) Had an amazing privately guided half-day with our guides, Thomas and Kelly. They were knowledgeable and funny, and made the day memorable. We learned a tremendous amount in a short period of time, and all want to continue rock climbing in the future. In short, it rocked. We took a 3 day climbing course with Yolan Caballero. We have climbed all over the world with guides but wanted to take the next step to learn to lead and place pro. Yolan is a young man with so much knowledge, passion, and patience. We learned so much more in 3 days than we have in all our climbing trips combined. Yolan gave us the basis to start learning to lead.
