Joslin Diabetes Center is very important to me. I started using their educational resources in 1972 because my husband had childhood diabetes. They provided me with information I needed to help me protect him in case he had an episode from his diabetes. Plus I wanted to know how to administer his insulin if necessary. Little did I know many years later I would have diabetes. Once again I contacted Joslin Diabetes Center for resources and tools to help me keep my Type 2 diabetes under control. I still have a folder of valuable information they sent to me. Now I go to their excellent website. American Diabetes Association is the most well known resource on Diabetes. I just want to share another valuable resource with anyone interested. Since I used Joslin Center for help so many years ago I am partial to this nonprofit organization. read more

I started going to Joslin in 2023 when I relocated to Boston and can't sing their praises enough. Does it have its doctor office issues, sure. But you're getting the top diabetes care in the country. I am also a patient at the Bethel Eye clinic and kept the rest of my non-diabetes care within Beth Israel group to make it easy. Their prescription request line is great, always getting back to me within 24 hours. They have helped me out with samples when I mentioned the cost of my Dexcom with new insurance. My NP has T1D herself and it's a world of difference for practical care you don't get elsewhere. read more

We arrived here after years of visits for my wife to UPenn, Temple, geisinger, NYU, and the Mayo Clinic. Finally one of her endocrinologists suggested Joslin as a last resort. She has a very rare and complicated condition, one symptom of which is uncontrollably low blood sugar. Unpredictably. They are the first group of specialists who have been able to help with appropriate med changes, sound dietary advice, and actual experience with others with this condition. The desk staff are a little gruff, but the doctors nurses and dietitian we've seen are all amazing. We've seen specialists up and down the east coast and this place is second to none. It's a 5 hour drive to get here, but we'll continue to do it because they are the best! read more

If you want an endocrinologist who doesn't reply to you, doesn't reply for insurance authorization, doesn't refill INSULIN prescriptions, and in general does not care about you or your literal life, come here. The only good employees are the ones that send in emergency prescription requests. Over the course of 2 years, I have had to call them multiple times to send in emergency refill requests because my endocrinologist does not send an adequate number of vials or refills for my prescription despite me asking repeatedly at every appointment. Absolutely terrible place. I had heard incredible things about this office growing up, and part of my decision to move to Boston was because of this center, but it's become very, very clear that they do not care about you. I have had type 1 diabetes for over 20 years, and I have never experienced as awful of care from any healthcare facility I've gone to as I have had here. I would give zero stars if I could. I'm a Senior Handicapped with the State of Massachusetts treated badly by one of the volunteers. The first woman who interviewed me told me that l could leave some of my things in the room while l used the restroom. A volunteer was waiting for me outside of the restroom seemed like she didn't want to be there. She grabbed my wheelchair rushed me over to another room, slammed the foot of the wheelchair into the doorframe. As she was about to leave l asked about the rest of my things that were left in the other room, she angrily snapped at me telling me " If You Give Me Two Seconds l'll Go And Get Them ! ! " She left came right back and threw my things down. I was upset, mentioned it to the Nurse Practitioner but she didn't respond to it. She works for Dr Patti. read more

This place will kill you if you are a woman with a (more) serious medical condition. Watch out. Dr Giulio Romeo is a misogynist who blamed my Cushing's disease on PCOS while I begged him for an MRI(he refused high and low, wouldn't even validate my concerns). I had no PCOS symptoms outside of weight gain. Ended up losing my career symptoms got so bad. Guess what? It is a 2.5mm pituitary tumor causing Cushing's Disease. Had to pay out of network to get my MRI because of him. Never would have had to leave my job if he wasn't so busy belittling me and telling me to implement more lifestyle changes. I will probably sue. They also owe me $750 because one of their on-call doctors refused to prescribe me insulin(I am type 1) when I needed to go out of town last minute for a funeral. Despite explaining the increased insulin needs because of the likely-Cushing's(all explained in my chart fyi and again over the phone), she refused and I had to pay out of pocket to avoid death or an ER visit. Received an eviction notice for my apartment because I had to buy insulin instead of pay rent. Refusing insulin to a type 1 diabetic should be criminal. Insurance won't reimburse because they never received a prior authorization. Joslin claims they have no record of an authorization request, so it's not their problem. YES BECAUSE THE CRIMINAL YOU EMPLOY REFUSED TO SUBMIT ONE. Corina Ligda MPS RN is responsible for running me in circles and ignoring my emails. She won't help or tell me the name of the female on-call doctor working June 4th 2024 at 7pm so I can warn people against how nasty she is when nobody's listening. Joslin used to be great. I considered making an appointment at Joslin since it is so hard to find a good endocrinologist in Virginia. I have had a endo tell me I was obsessive compulsive disorder instead of getting to the root of the problem as to why my infusion sets were not working. It was not OCD, but the wrong type of infusion set. My doctor now cannot work with Medicare to get pump supplies. She keeps prescribing the wrong type of blood tests. After 3 months of this, I gave up on the pump. I now inject. This is only 2 examples. I considered going to Joslin. After reading the reviews, I changed my mind. Who wouldn't? read more

When I first became a patient at Joslin over 20 years ago, I was so excited to get world-class care in managing my Type 1 diabetes. The 2 different endocrinologists I saw were wonderful, and their patient education classes were enormously helpful. Sadly, Joslin today has become a dysfunctional bureaucracy. I can't get them to reauthorize my CGM sensor re-orders because Joslin insists the paperwork has to go through a separate Patient Education and Technical Support group for approval. That's a place where those requests go to die and my endocrinologist can't approve the reorders himself. It's absolutely frustrating to be a patient there. Look elsewhere for help in managing your or a family member's diabetes. read more

Beware if you are thinking of going to Joslin. It's hard to get a doctor's appt and forget prescriptions. It's a multi- call, multi-email, pound the table experience that can take weeks. Even for basic things like pump supplies it's extremely frustrating and shocking. I waited two months to get a prescription for a new insulin pump after my doctor OKd it and now need a prescription for pump supplies that I can't seem to get. There is no sane person who would say this is OK, especially for lifesaving prescriptions that diabetics need. It's really shocking. Boston has the best healthcare providers in the country. There is no advantage to Joslin (unless you like to be very frustrated). read more

The Joslin is one of the premier diabetes research centers in the world, and they are probably very good at treating people with complex cases of diabetes. But if you have a relatively straightforward case, you'll find the clinic as overly bureaucratic, slow, and wasteful. Every time I come they insist on running a battery of tests generally reserved for folks with more advanced or complicated cases of diabetes. These tests take a ton of time. Speaking of time, if you show up "on time" for appointment, you're actually late. You need to show up at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment so you can have preliminary work done-- someone must take your blood sugar (like you already don't do that several times a day) and see how much you weigh (like you can't do that in your own either), and download any meter data. They'll draw a couple vials of blood to do your a1c and blood work and perhaps even take scans of your eyes (because why not) every single time. The wait for these preliminary services is highly variable and if the person doing your work is slow you can get passed up for your appointment time which means waiting as your doctor decides to see someone else. I have showed up on time to nearly all of my appointments yet have never been in and out of here in less than two hours regardless of how simple my case is. I'm writing this having waited OVER AN HOUR to see my doctor because the nurse who punched in my dexcom information spelled my name wrong and *as that was being corrected* my doctor decided to see another patient instead. So you need to show up extra early in case the preliminary services take forever or you'll be stuck here forever. When I've expressed interest in getting lined up with a CGM or pump, their response is to insist on a litany of unnecessary courses that I must attend in the middle of the workday, making the time consuming and expensive journey all the way back to downtown Boston. There is no way to attend similar classes elsewhere or online because "they have a process and can't deviate from it even if the doctor wants to". Classic CYA behavior. More interested in their process and their patients' needs. If you want to see a doctor here and you can't meet during workday hours, expect to wait several months before finding an opening. If you want to get in sooner via a canceled appointment, you can no longer join a wait list. You must call in every single morning and wait on hold check if there is a cancelation on that day. Because of course, you're just overflowing with free time and can change your schedule on a whim, right? The doctors themselves just aren't that insightful. I've been to smaller clinics elsewhere and you get the exact same computerized analysis with the exact same set of questions. ... Maybe I'd appreciate Joslin more if I had a very complicated case of diabetes. But I don't. In my experience, I have found their slowness and bureaucracy getting in the way of my health improving more than facilitating it. I've been coming here for two years and have yet to have a positive experience. I should have switched providers long ago. read more

Went here for one appointment and thought it wasn't bad... whelp... I was wrong. Should have listened to my friends who have had a bad time with them too. Not only are staff rude but they are disorganized and don't care. I got 6 calls and 4 voicemails from them over the course of 2 days harassing me about how they at first wanted to change my appointment to an earlier time because a doctor had an open slot, to them saying the doctor wouldn't be there... So why did you schedule me at that time? I was so frustrated at this point I called to cancel the appointment. I was rudely transferred by a staff member to another one who was rude as well. After canceling my appointment I got a reminder call... for the appointment I canceled hours before. They charge $35 supposedly if you miss an appointment. I also got a letter about my first visit with them. It pretty much had the doctors notes calling me a liar and she got a bunch of information wrong! How does this happen?! Oh wait being disorganized and not caring about real people who you treat like sub humans is how this happens. Real great... don't go here. read more

Worst waiting room ever. Staff gossiping so loud with even two doctors joining in right at the reception desk. Uh, hello, can you stop gossiping and help me, please? Just LOVE that they talk so loud about your medical issues the whole waiting room can hear everything. Reception staff so disorganized and confused they ask the same questions over and over. Nothing to read in the waiting area but old issues of Boston Parents Paper and someone's old catalogues with addresses ripped off the back. Old people playing YouTube videos as loud as f*ck even staffing is staring at them but no one says anything. Thankfully it's a one time visit for me. Had a checkup there today and all is relatively well. I know this review isn't about me, so here's what you really want to know... This place is one of the premier hospitals that specializes in diabetes care and research. I've been involved with the Joslin in many ways over many years and must say that they are a top-notch organization on all fronts. Having been diagnosed with type 1 about 14 years ago, the Joslin has been there every step of the way. From regular checkups to eye exams to summer camps to fundraisers to education, I have had the privilege of meeting many of the fine men and women that make this place what it is. It is one of the few organizations that can count on my unconditional support. They gave me a shot at maximizing my quality of life and for that, I am forever grateful. Oops, I just remembered that this review wasn't about me and that it was supposed to be about the Joslin Diabetes Center. I'm guessing you can conclude that I like the place. A lot. Highly recommended for diabetics, type 1 and 2 alike. If you don't have diabetes, good for you, but I would suggest developing it just so you can experience the Joslin for real. read more

I've been going to Joslin for about 7 years now. My endocrinologist (head of the insulin pump program) and nurse practitioner are outstanding. They know how to help, and they know when to push me to do better and when it's better to let things go. Some of the office staff are helpful and courteous, some are not - hence the 4 stars out of 5. Also, scheduling can really be a pain sometimes, though my doctor is quite helpful if I have trouble getting an appointment. read more

I started attending joslin in 2010, Since then the experience has gone down hill. The front desk in the adult clinic doesnt talk to the other desks in the clinic. I walked up to the desk at the end of the appointment to schedule a follow up and they threw said (sorry, we dont reschedule follow ups) i went to the check in desk and they sent me right back! Idiots. When i approached the desk, the front desk manager looked at me very rudely and wide eyed like i had offended her. My endo was no better, i started having sever muscle cramps with the insulin and she kept giving me higher doses. I met with a nother physician outside of the office and she was appauled that the doctor was harming me with high doses. I am a brand new diabetes patient, over fifty, just sent to Joslin from my nephrologist 1 1/2 weeks ago. For my first appointment, I took my husband along. Unfortunately, I've had a great deal of experience in medical care, but this visit was among the worst I've ever had. The physician barely lifted his eyes from the computer screen to deign to speak with us. The visit with him was almost useless. The nurse / diabetes educator / dietitian we saw next was a lot of fun and even hilarious, but she was also completely disorganized, jumped around the small, messy room speaking a mile a minute, and ended up giving us almost no useful information at all. She never even let me handle or try out all of the complicated and confusing equipment I would be using. We were given no information about diet, or any other aspect of diabetes at this visit - not even a clue. We left having no idea what to do - not how to test blood, when to test blood, how or when to inject insulin. Perhaps some of this information will come in our next visit in two more weeks, but what are we to do until then? We went home and got on line to find various sites that told us what to do. They didn't all agree, but we did our best to figure things out on our own (information we did NOT get from the world-famous Joslin Diabetes Clinic). Now we find that the prescription they sent to CVS was a conglomeration of things we did and did not need and included no needles for injecting insulin beyond the three samples (along with plenty of other things we don't need at all). Needless to say, we have been left anxious, confused, a little frightened, and most of all very frustrated. Perhaps Joslin does some great research, and perhaps they have helped many people in the past, but last week they did next to nothing for me. At this point, I could not recommend them to anyone. read more

I like to say my immune system ate my pancreas when I was 10--it's one of my default ways of explaining glibly that I have had Type 1 diabetes for the better part of two decades now. Joslin Diabetes Center has been there for me every step of the way. My few ventures outside of the system (for college, etc) have made me so glad for that, because they do such a great job, not just with medical care, but with dealing with the disease as the complex challenge that it is. Joslin took me in on that overwhelming and confusing first day when I was diagnosed after I read a Babysitters Club books and went "Mom, mom, I think I have diabetes too!" (She explained to me what hypochondria was, but did agree to take me to the doctor the next day. Biggest "Told you so!" ever, huh?) Back then it had an inpatient unit, which was a great way to get acclimated, but it since got axed insurance no longer covers such things. They still have such a great team of people to work with you though, and they are always up on the most cutting edge treatments (and potentially clinical trials, if you're into the whole medical guinea pig thing). Not only do you get an endocrinologist (diabetes doc), but also a nurse practioner/educator to see between your endo visits. I find them great especially at strategizing on the practical aspects of diabetes care. Joslin also has great nutritionists, psychologists who specialize in diabetes-related issues, opthamologists and exercise physiologists. read more

Overall a great clinic, I like my Doctor and have generally had great experiences. But if you are going to do the "Why Wait" 12 week Program, they abandon you after the program is over. The follow up and maintenance program is not only poor, but it's almost NON-Existent and many people quickly gain all the weight back, because the people that run the program simply do not care enough to institute a comprehensive follow up maintenance program. I'm a patient of 10 plus years at Joslin and just had the worst experience I've EVER had with them before. I'm being denied having my insulin refilled until I physically come in for my appointment next week. I told the medical office coordinator that I was going to run out and asked if I was expected to go without insulin for more than a week. Why couldn't they give me one pen to hold me over until next week? She told me my treatment may have changed, because it's been a year since I was there last, so they weren't going to give me anything. My dosage never changes when I go there and I've been around an average A1C of 6 for the last however many years. By no means am I non-compliant patient who doesn't take good care of themselves, aside from the fact that I waited a bit too long to schedule my next appointment. At this point in time, the medical office coordinator is being beyond rude to me to the point where I'm in tears when I'm just trying to get help/my INSULIN and tells me to go to my primary care doctor. I of course understand the importance of keeping appointments regularly, but it seems BEYOND comprehension that they would deny you of insulin...the drug that keeps you alive...to hold you over before you come in for your appointment in a week. I also don't appreciate the staff being rude to patients who are just trying to get help when dealing with a chronic disease. Often times dealing with healthcare and insurance feels FAR more difficult than managing the disease itself. read more

Worst situation I have ever seen. First of all, the office is located in a large complex full of other medical offices. When I called to make my appointment I was not given the building number of the diabetes center where I needed to go. I was also not given Covid instructions. I had a 8am appointment and I arrived at 7:55am unable to locate the Diabetes Center. I tried to call the office number only to get a message stating that the office is closed until 8:30am. I drove around for 30 minutes going in and out of different offices asking for help. Nobody knew where the office was located. Finally at 8:33am I managed to get through on their office lines by pretending to be a doctors office. I was then told by the lady who answered the phone, that the office opens at 8am but the phone is not signed on until 8: 30am ( wow). She then tells me the building number where the office is located. I arrive at the office at 8:34am. Sitting at the front was two of the most unprofessional females I have ever seen. First, they never even looked up at me. Second, they were rolling their eyes at each other. You could clearly see there was tension between them. One of the girls asked the other for help with her computer because it was not working. The other girl responded in the most demeaning way. I was shocked. The girl then told me she could reschedule me for a month from now. I just walked out of the office. I can not say anything about the Doctors there but if they allow unprofessional staff, I can't imagine they are much better read more

Why is this when you check out with them but they can't give you the date and time when they made the Appt. Not very good practice. read more

HORRIBLE! 0 out of 5 stars. If you need to have any medication refilled you will have to drive all the way there. It is hard to get through to them on the phone. So if you want to be consistent with your meds then do not go there. They will not refill on time causing inconsistency. I am currently looking for a new doctor to replace them. They can't seem to handle the patients they already have. Very disorganized. read more

I completely agree with E.C. The incompetence is overwhelming. I have been going to Joslin for a long time. I happen to like my doctor but I cringe at the thought of going to this facility. It is the worst run clinic I have ever witnessed. Regrettably, I have the experience to know. Employees, administrators and most importantly the CEO and Board of Trustees should be ashamed of themselves. The staff is rude, extremely condescending, unprofessional and usually incompetent from the time one gets to the door of the building. The valet is never there. The intake person never smiles or says hello and the broken English is not a winner even though I speak Spanish. There has been so much incompetency in the few years including wrong labs results sent to me, wrong labs ordered, wrong tubes drawn, admin not following through on request wasting my time to get instruction on a new meter, lack luster nurse practitioner today who drove me crazy. ALWAYS TREATED IN A CONDESCENDING MANNER BY STAFF EXCEPT DOCTOR - AS IF CHILD! I have a PhD in pharmacology and biochemistry from an ivy league school and the same in business. Rx's not ordered, argued about tests, never bothered with how I was feeling. Never went over labs. Since rx's not filled or asked about, gave up sheet with some labs to person to get rx's filled - rx's on same sheet as labs! NP should be fired! Medical assistants don't know how to take blood pressure in several instances. Sloppy, unprofessional dress. Same with manager! Attitude: patient the enemy, let's get rid of patient even if we make many mistakes. The IT system doesn't work. I am on it but I can see no information. I have spent a couple hours with the IT help desk who said the doctor has to make info available. What a mess. This is not medicine, this is quackery. I am seriously considering leaving Joslin. I like my doctor but the rest is scary. Regrettably, I have worked in healthcare since age 15 running a large outpatient center, 300 beds of a major teaching hospital and ultimately CEO of three biotech/biomed/bioit companies. I do know what I am talking about. Stanford does wonderfully and almost every other teaching hospital in the world including AKH in Vienna, Charite in Germany and more. There are no 'Best Practices' at Joslin, only mistakes and rudeness bordering on cruelty to patients. Then there's the surly tone from nearly all: Will you xyz for me? Or will you roll up your sleeve for me? Well, no, is the answer. I will simply roll up my sleeve if you ask and say please and thank you. Those two words do not exist in the vocabulary of Joslin employees. I hate the place. In fact, I despise it. It is a pox on the healthcare profession as well as on medical facilities worldwide. It is the worst. I have been to every teaching hospital in the world. Joslin is outrageously bad. And, I agree with Dee C. The staff gossips loudly and the doctors join in about a person's medical issues. It is inappropriate and in violation of HIPAA laws that I helped write! Dieticians should provide useful information without the entertainment comments. The calibration of their blood glucose measurements seems to be systematically higher that what I measured with my glucose meter ( I will verify if this holds for A1C measurements). Doctors should listen more to their patients and provide more advice/input on patients' approach of their diabetes instead of prescribing tons of pills. They assume that the patient is so poorly educated in handling his/her disease that they will accept doctor's prescription without critique (hey Joslin wake up, there are so many sources of reliable information about our disease, so we could educate ourselves!) - no wonder why their patients do not follow exactly the treatment. An advice for Joslin doctors: ask the patient if he/she agrees with the new prescription and justify amply your decision! And listen to your patients instead of only reading the blood glucose history off their monitors! You guys are wonderful people, but you need to improve! read more
