First time visit to Evergreen Cemetery…read more Travis Audubon and Austin Parks & Recreation scheduled a group event here, birding and exploring one of Austin's historic cemeteries. Established in 1926 as a public cemetery to serve the African American communities of Travis County, this place is also home to mature live oaks, pecans and cedar elms, and is flanked by woodlands that support a nice variety of birds. It's always nice to learn a bit more about the city one lives in, and of the people who helped make Austin what is is today.

It is located at Airport Boulevard and 12th St. Many of the people buried here were born in the 1800s. This site would've been just on the outskirts of Austin back in the day, but of course it is surrounded on all sides by urbanization today. This is a nicely manicured and well cared for graveyard with a couple of port-a-pottys on site. You could easily spend an entire day here reading names. You can find graves that date from the 1800s all the way to the present day including many military service members. There is probably about a mile worth of roadway winding through cemetery. I drove through the entire graveyard but I never found a place where you could find a comprehensive listing of all those interred here. One other thing I was surprised not to find was a Texas historical sign that would've had some good historical information concerning the cemetery. I'm quite certain there are some very influential people from Austin's history buried within the confines. There are some posted scan codes throughout the cemetery that do give some historical insights . This is definitely one of the nicest graveyards within the Austin area. Check out the photos below.

It sits just on the outskirts of the Hutto city limits and despite still being somewhat in the country, there are some new homes next to it. There are quite a number of headstones from the 1800s and there are many veterans buried here including a couple of confederate soldiers. The cemetery has a single lane gravel road running through the sections. This is still an active cemetery judging by a few very recent burials. There is a Texas historical sign at the entrance that tells you some great historical facts and is included in the photos of this review. This location is well manicured and the headstones are well arranged, not scattered about. You'll find many well cared for headstones, but there are no above ground mausoleums. This is one of the nicest cemeteries worthy of spending some time walking through.

This cemetery sits on a couple of acres not far from highway 71 in Bastrop near a Buccee's. First…read morething you notice about it, is that it is very well manicured, taken care of, and all the graves are lined up and orderly. One other thing you notice is that almost every grave is adorned with flowers and personal trinkets. This is still an active cemetery with many recent interments with plenty of room left. Quite a number of the headstones have porcelain photographs of the decedents. The majority of the headstones appear to be Hispanic in origin. I did not spot any headstones that went back before 1930. There is no Texas historical sign or informational kiosk at this location. Should you decide to make this your forever home, the photos included might help with your choice.

This cemetery was obviously established back in the late 1800s because today it sits on some very…read morevaluable real estate. In other words, when this graveyard was established, I 35 was probably a two lane dirt road with horse and buggies going back and forth. Today it literally sits on the northbound feeder road of I 35 and the corner of Dean Keeton with thousands of cars rushing by. It has two points of entry along the feeder road with a gravel road running through the middle of the cemetery linking both of them. It is at least 3 to 5 acres in size and there are hundreds of headstones. Much of the cemetery is organized into family plots with their surrounding borders. The cemetery could use some work, as the grass was unmowed, the trees looked really scraggly, the entrance gate was broken off and there were a number of toppled headstones. There are quite a number of graves from the late 1800s, but the majority are from the early 20th century. I spotted quite a number of woodmen of the world headstones, which are quite common in this area. There may be some notable names interred here, but I did not spot any. There are a handful of graves that have been visited in the last few months, but it's quite clear that many have long since been forgotten. I did spot a few graves from the early 2000s up to 2019, but nothing from the last year or two. Plenty of photos included to peak your interest.

It is directly behind the Palm Valley Lutheran Church which is a historical building. All the graves are very well laid out and ordered primarily into family burial plots. There are acres of old headstones , recent ones and some waiting to be interred in their future plot. There is a single paved lane that runs through the center of the cemetery dividing the old and the new graves. I'm sure many of these headstones belong to the Who's Who of Round Rock and local history. This is still an active cemetery and I found several recent graves from 2022. There is also more room for additional plots on the back side should you decide this is the place to be your forever home. The church had a historical marker, but I did not see one for the cemetery. The pictures in this review don't fully capture just how beautiful this place is.

There are some headstones from the late 1800s, but the majority of them date from the 20th century. The cemetery sits on 1-2 acres just off County Road 401 and is flanked on three sides with farmland containing horses and cows. Many of the graves have German names and the older ones have German writing on them. The predominant names that I spotted here were Bittner and Krueger. Sadly many of the older graves are dedicated to infants and children. The photos in this review spell out the rest of the story.

Though it is next to the road it still sits on private property. If you try to go past the gate on the property you will set off an alarm. There does not appear to be any new graves nor a lot of room for new residents either.

As you might guess from the name, this graveyard is populated by Hispanic decedents. I've seen some Hispanic graveyards which have been well kept up by family members, but unfortunately this acreage seems neglected. Many of these graves date back to the 1920s, 30s and newer. I do not believe this is an active graveyard as there were no recent decedents to be found here. The most recent grave that I could find here was from 1964. The photos included in this review will add better insight.
