As a New York native I must say this terminal and area is cleaner and more productive than city hubs. The station itself is pretty clean and manned well even though some vagrants hang out along JFK Blvd by the Duane Reade now and then. On another note, there's lots of construction and building going on around the station and area seems up and coming so there's room for improvement. read more

Unlike the platforms at the other PATH stations, the platforms at JSQ are outdoors. So be prepared if you are making a transfer at this station (bundle up during winter and peel off some layers during summer). This is especially important if you are transferring during the weekend and have to wait a long time - and, more often than not, you will wait a long time with the alternate weekend train route. Track 1 and Track 2 share one platform, while Track 3 and 4 share the other. At each platform, there are two sets of escalators/stairs and one elevator. The escalators/stairs will get you to the level where the ticket machines and turnstiles are, the concourse level, and then the plaza level (street level) where the banks and Chickpea are located. Taking the elevator may be confusing at first. From the platform, the elevator will take you to the concourse level and there are turnstiles here. Once you pass through the turnstiles, you'll walk through a short hallway that will lead you to the area where the escalators/stairs are. Now, to get to the elevator that will get you to the plaza level, you need to head towards Deli Plus, pass through the glass doors, and then you'll see the elevators. These elevators can get you to plaza level as well as the parking deck levels. The station gets a bum rap. Yes, it's not as polished and nice looking as the other stations, but hey it gets the job done. If you think you are safer at one of the other stations, I'd argue that PATH crazy can happen at ANY of the stations. PATH crazy is indiscriminate. Both my creepiest PATH experience and most gangster/scariest PATH experience happened at the Newport station. No matter which station, just make sure to watch your back, hold onto your stuff, and keep your eyes open. You'll be fine. read more

For $1.75 (one-way) New Yorkers can cross the Hudson River into the state of New Jersey which can be easily access from World Trade Center; 23rd; and 33rd Streets. I agree with a previous reviewer that it's a very convenient way to travel between New York and New Jersey avoiding stuck in traffic. I rate the PATH System two stars for lack of signage for Native New Yorkers who infrequently utlizes the PATH System as one can easily get lost. The lack of signage of describing what track(s) passengers board to get to Hoboken, Jersey City, etc. There is NO information booth unlike MTA Subway system have a human inside the booth to ask for assistance. read more

THIS STATION SUCKS BECAUSE THE VENDING MACHINES NEVER WORK PROPERLY. I have no issue at other locations like WTC purchasing a fare. I experience no problems purchasing metrocards in NYC stations. ONLY THIS STATION seems to give me problems and then I constantly end up missing my train because of the malfunctioning machines. Comparing PATH to the NYC Subway is like comparing a Cadillac Escalade to a Garbage truck. Okay, maybe the PATH isn't quite an Escalade, but it's certainly a nice clean ride. And the NYC Subway? Yep, it's a dump. The PATH trains are clean and comfortable and most of all, quiet. The Subway is a squealing metal-on-metal piercing sound that even sticking your fingers in your ears can't block. PATH is cheap, cheap, cheap and it's fast, fast, fast. $2.05 to get from anywhere to anywhere. Like from the Newport station where my hotel is to WTC or 33rd Street. Awesomeness. I have only ONE complaint. On the CIty side, the stations are hard to find at night. Would it kill you to light them a little better? I wandered in a small circle for a while trying to find the 33rd Street Station. And the Christopher Street? It's in the middle of the block and there is zero lighting on the signs. WTH? The city government should do something about cleaning up this place and bring it to the par with the other path stations in town like Grove or Newport. This station is littered with dirt and garbage causing inconvenience to the commuters. The local market every Wednesday and Friday outside the station is a relief. The government should help out the homeless folks sleeping on the stairs of the station with some good shelters. Nobody deserves to live like that. read more

This is a major bus and Path train hub for the area. Multiple entrances to the subway with stairs and escalators so no need to be a lemming following the crowd. Bike stands are on the mezzanine, citibike stand is at a near corner, cab stand is in front, and bus depot in back. Parking lots in the area are $7+/day if you are willing to walk a few blocks to get a better deal. Inside the station is very well kept but the outside area is mixed with flooring that needs repair and there are always crowds of derelicts hanging around the plaza which really diminishes the experience. Kind of strange that the police allow that especially with a luxury apartment building pretty much next door. The neighborhood is still up and coming but outside of the bums that roam and nap on the benches and stairs, it has a fair police presence and is very quiet at night so you can feel relatively safe. If the city or law enforcement would just help discourae the loitering of the homeless people who sit around, beg, and sleep on the plaza it would be much improved and feel safer. read more

Another smelly trains stop along the new jersey path. This one just like Harrison is not my favorite because there's no real indoors. There is an area to stay away from the cold but it's far from the train stop and you could miss your train standing in the warmth. Stand clear of the closing door. Bing, bong. I hear these words tens of times per day on my commute in, either sitting on a bright blue chair or hanging onto a pole. Either way, i'm face deep in a book or watching PATH TV, immersed in air conditioned commuting goodness. Yeah, thats right, we have TVs on our trains. Hear that other non-PATH NYC trains? Yawn. Your fancy lite-brite of stops is no match for news, weather, word scrambles, and sports. The good: -Generally consistent with timing. -New trains. -Insane A/C. The bad: -As much as it can be generally consistent, it can also be generally inconsistent. Once in a while i'm stuck at Hoboken Terminal twiddling my thumbs watching the WTC train go in and out and in and out without a 33rd street train in sight. -Late night can be annoying - trains on the half hour AND drunk people. The getting better: -Digital signs have popped up at Hoboken Terminal. Hopefully the rest of the terminals will be populated with them in due time. As much as I love playing the "Hoboken or JSQ" game at 23rd street coming home from work, a little upfront information would be nice. The nonsensical: -STOP HANGING BY THE DOOR. This really goes for all subways I take on the regular. If you just moved in instead of trying to get fancy with the door, things would move a bit faster. There are no staff to assist. At Herald Square I inserted my $5.50 into the ticket machine, no ticket came out forcing me to purchase another. On the train I asked the guard who said to raise it at journal square with someone in a red jacket. The rail link between Jersey & New York City is decidedly the PATH. The Port Authority Trans- Hudson rail is the one of the means of public transportation from the New Jersey side to the New York-Manhattan side. I took the PATH at least 3 times during my short stay in New York City, staying with a friend on the Jersey side near Journal Square. The experience was decent, as the ride was effortless and everything seemed well maintained. The PATH stations at Journal Square, World Trade Center, and 33rd streets were clean enough, although you could smell faint traces of homelessness that seemed to longer in the area. Still, the PATH rail system is a vital part of the New York City rail network infrastructure and a cheap option for people to get around the city and neighboring communities in Jersey and NYC. The PATH mirrors itself with the NYC rail system, using the same ticketing system to make it all uniform, no matter where your origin and destination may be for any given day. The cost per ride is $2.50, so it can get really expensive when you ride daily. Since, I was there for 2 days, I opted for pay as you go MTA card and spent $20 on transportation fees, which isn't that bad, but then again, NYC is an expensive place. There are kiosks in the train station to recharge your MTA rail card or issue you a new one, in case you somehow lost it. The machines accepts credit cards, so that's always a great thing. There is always people coming and going along the PATH route, so best believe you need to act like you're in a hurry and you should be okay and not look too touristy, if you are from out of town. The rail cars look relatively new and the insides are pretty much clean. The PATH trains come once every 10 minutes, so that's good. It's quite nice to have the PATH heading directly to lower manhattan during the weekday, but switching it up to 33rd street on the weekend, where I needed to be anyway (Penn Station), so it works out for the best. I think that the PATH is a pretty good rail system to have, if you live and work in the area. While cars and taxis are good for what they are, the PATH rail system takes you from the Jersey side and into the hub of New York City daily. And cheaply too. My experience was good. Got in and out and without problems. The credit card machines for the MTA cards was good too. Helps the local commuters as well as the tourists to use the system well and cheaply to wherever we need to go. Definitely recommended if you are doing New York City on the cheap, like me. Fast, convenient, clean, and cheap. If visiting the Dirty JerZ this is the way to go. Lots of trains running from 33rd street in Herald Square to Hoboken and Jersey City destinations. You can also hop on at Christopher Street, 9th Street, 14th Street, 23rd Street, and the World Trade Center. I am impressed at how clean these trains are. Roomy and still new looking. Plus, with the hot humid weather the cold AC in these trains feels terrific. Still, what the eff is up with the lack of signage in the Newport Station? None of the digital signs in the long ass tunnel to the platforms worked last night, and then you have to walk down the stairs into the steam bath by the tracks, and walk down half way before you see a sign telling you what track the NYC bound train is coming in on for 33rd street. By the time you realize you are on the wrong track platform a train pulls in and you have no time to run up, over, and down to make it. C'mon PATH, not everyone is a mind reader. Put up a lot more damn signage! At least the station was pretty clean with flat screens showing news and weather. The cars sometimes are named after various communities on the line/area that are affected. Personally I have no idea how Milburn is connected to the PATH system, but hey, I learned a bit about it. Good: - Runs 24-7. A little less frequently on the weekends, but not bad. - Fast access to the city from NJ. 12-18 minute rides, unless you're coming from Newark/Harrison. - Direct connect to Midtown or Downtown from Hoboken, Jersey City, Harrison, Newark. - Cheap. $1.75 per ride, or cheaper if you get the card. - Can use the Metrocard for access. Also has a dedicated card for use, too, but no way to return that one to recycle? - Fewer panhandlers. Bad: - They should just extend the line that goes to Journal Square all the way over to Newark. Or a dedicated line from Journal Square to Newark, so the trains come more frequently between JSQ and World Trade/33rd/Hoboken. - The weekend switchover to few trains.... not a fan, people always get confused. - No trash cans. I mean, really, would it kill you to get some so people would stop throwing trash on the rails? - Recycling boxes for the used up Metrocards would help, too. - Heck, recycling bins would help. - More parking by the stations would promote the service more. - Hot and humid in the summer. Need more working fans. - Handicapped access is virtually nil at most of the stations, except end-points. Neutral: - No cash now at the turnstiles. - An extension to Edgewater and down to Bayonne would help. Or reciprocity with the NJ Light Rail System? - Would be helpful if a time at the top announced anticipated train arrivals. This is, after all, a smaller line than the L line that has it in the city. - Every once in a while a track fire shuts down the entire system. No joke. Update all the wiring, darn it. I'd settle for that above the new train cars. - Thy're replacing the cars of the trains, so that will be nicer, but really, they could do with the old cars and just updating things like the wiring, signals, and cleaning up the tunnels a bit. - Ban on photography, food, and drink. This train is outright majestic compared to the NYC subway. They don't let you eat food on them so they are a billion times cleaner. Seating seems to be more adequate and the train inside is much better maintained. No graffiti or damaged posters here. Nor have I seen vagrants walking through begging for money rattling change cups or showing off their physical deformities to the world. No nasty smells & the train actually leaves in a timely fashion (thought I got impatient yesterday waiting on the one to get to Journal Square). If you get to the right part of 33rd and 6th, you can take the elevator to get right to the platform. Also, no need to buy a separate PATH tickets if you've got a Metrocard since the machines also take the NYC Metrocard. Too bad our subway system can't get with the program & take a page out of the PATH book. read more

Journal Square PATH Station is a low stress way into Lower Manhattan from Jersey City Came here on a Saturday with a family of 3 (1 toddler in tow) to catch the PATH train to the World Trade Center (WTC) PATH Station. We tried it out after having experiencing the Dover Train Line to Penn Station which took about an hour and a half. From there we had to either walk or take the subway to Midtown for 20+ minutes. From our previous experiences we discovered that a toddler (or their parents) doesn't always handle a subway ride AND a long train ride so well after spending an entire day in The City. So what makes Journal Square PATH Station a destination to reduce some of your travel stress? You take your car and spend less time on a fixed path train which allows you to make stops or save time as needed. Journal Square Parking (CASH ONLY) that has plenty of parking and elevators directly into Journal Square from the garage. You can get your PATH train tickets if you just make a U-turn from the elevators next to the Deli. From there you can walk outside through the glass doors to get to your PATH train turnstiles via the escalators or stairs. You also have an opportunity to purchase your PATH tickets near these turnstiles. You only need to get onto 1 of 2 open air platforms, which feel great when you're wearing the appropriate seasonal clothing. It seems that you have enough time to switch platforms if you realize you are in the wrong spot when your PATH train arrives. Once on the correct PATH train you will notice you are; in comfortable air-conditioning, able to watch some PATH TV, able to here clear announcements of current and next stops, not feeling the typical sense of despair/dread associated with NY Subways. Once we arrived in the World Trade Center (WTC) PATH Station and went up from the platform into the transportation center we were impressed with the look of the place. Overall I'd say the Car & PATH train trip saved us about an hour verses the 2+ hours that we typically would spend on the Dover Line & Subway combo, ONE WAY! That's right, in total that's an extra 2 hours of our day to spend enjoying the family, The City, eating, whatever it is that you feel like doing on your travels. So try it out and see what type of relaxation some extra time can offer you and/or your family. No people from New Jersey or New York were harmed during the writing of this review. I'm really in awe of how clean the PATH train is, specifically Journal Square. Maybe it's just a subway to some but to me, it's a break from the filthy subways of NYC. (With the exception of the Q extension because it's new. Haven't seen any of our rat friends there yet). Journal Square is above ground but they have a heating area, in the colder months. Imagine that?! A heating area that you can stand under as you wait for the train. I do love NYC and I Iove the convenience of of MTA but maybe MTA could learn a thing or two from the PATH train. Probably my only complaint is the inability to use your unlimited metro card at PATH stations. You can use a non-unlimited metro card to pay for rides. Just as an FYI but there are kiosks at all the stations, for your convenience. I suggest getting a round trip, to eliminate the hassle. read more

If you're leaving the city or going into the city at 1 AM, you'll have to wait and wait and wait. Let me begin this review by saying that I'm giving the PATH five stars for it's convenience, 24 hour service, cleanliness and history. Beginning as the Hudson and Manhattan railroad over 100 years ago, these tunnels are OLD. Keeping that in mind, it's not shocking that stuff goes wrong. Along those lines, remembering that this is public transit run by a bi-state agency it's shocking the trains run at all. At the Hoboken station if you look at the pillars, there's a painted H, which obviously stands for Hoboken. At Newport however there's an E. Why? Well when it was the Hudson and Manhattan, it was known as Erie. Random but slightly cool fact. In theory, the trains are 24 hours. I say in theory because there are almost daily delays that impede your ride or station closures for one reason or another. This past winter, the World Trade Center station was closed at various points due to "falling ice". I REALLY hope the ice wasn't falling 104 stories, just saying. Furthermore, the trains always stop in the tunnels for one reason or another, sometimes for 30 seconds...sometimes for a few minutes. That being said, the trains do run between Newark Penn Station, various points in Jersey City and the World Trade Center on one line. A second weekday line runs from Hoboken to the WTC, a third from Hoboken to 33rd st and 6th ave in Manhattan (various stops along 6th ave and a great stop at Christopher St when I want to buy vinyl), and a forth between 33rd and Journal Square in Jersey City. On the weekends there's no Hoboken to WTC line, rather a 33rd to Journal Square line via Hoboken. It's pretty clean, as no drinking or eating is allowed on board. This is rarely enforced in my experience as the only way to be caught is to drink directly in front of a PATH employee. That being said, don't be a jerk. The coffee can wait a few minutes. All announcements are automated, which is great. The current stop is announced, as well as where the train is going and the next stop. An example is "This stop is Newport. This is the train to World Trade Center. The next stop is Exchange Place". Sometimes this doesn't work though and there's manual announcements and the speakers are very clear. The conductors have a sense of humor as well. I remember being at Exchange once on the WTC train and hearing "World Trade Center, World Trade. Don't get on this train unless you want to end up at the World Trade Center." Once it began moving he went "To anyone who got on this by accident, well you're heading to the World Trade Center, World Trade next and last stop" If you read through this entire review, I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. read more

My dear PATH, Fast walking and in running 3" heels became my expertise as vanity foreboded me from wearing sneakers with work attire. Come to think of it, I don't think I owned a single pair of sneakers at the time. Running late was practically my motto. You were there for me through thick and thin for many years. Your trains and buses have always ran dependably. I've never been mugged whether I was sober or buzzed outta my mind. The newsstand and pizza places were my preferred vendors to part with my money. You've always kept your fares low and your ticketing machines never pulled a fast one on me, like potato chip vending machines have a knack for doing. I've used your services countless times that I may have dreamed of you on several occasions. Whether they were innocent or titillating, I wouldn't remember. I'm sure there were a bit of both involved. No doubt you are a permanent fixture in the strange landscape of my memories. For this, I may have to find a song to dedicate to you. But... Aren't there always "buts" in life? I know - it can be a harsh word. ...My memory of you was sadly tainted by a star-crossed relationship gone sour. I will not name him here. Sometimes I take the WTC and 34th Street Lines whenever I need to utilize the PATH. You pay per ride, NOT per station. Unlike other rapid rail systems, this is perfect. But the signal problems, track issues and construction, as well as wire problems lead to delays, which is inconvenient to those who need to get somewhere on time. read more

When I first started commuting from this spot, I was so lost. It's a bit confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of it. Just ask someone, who seems nice if you are standing on the right side. I can see why this is frustrating to someone who isn't familiar with this location. There's plenty of ticket booths but most people forget that and the lines for the lower level ones can get hectic. The cops do their little 'random checking of people's bags but like someone else mentioned, they shouldn't only be there in the morning. They need put in those night time hours! I've only experienced a few set backs with delays but who hasn't? That's expected when you're relying on public transportation. read more

I take PATH every day and it runs great except on the weekends when it is turtle slow. Lately it has been sitting around 10 because the bridge in Newark is up. I know its not PATH's fault but the announcements could be better. I wish there were more PATH cops on the train to bust all the idiots eating and drinking and making it dirty. Also would be nice to deal with belligerent males blasting music over their headphones. Still despite all that pretty reliable and rarely do I have the homeless on the train unlike the subway. I always feel like I'm loitering. - After a certain time, the Path runs every 30 minutes at night. After a night of drinking, I always arrive at 2:01am or 2:31am and have to sit out the 29 penalty minutes. Ugly - Why are people always running for a train that they are never going to make at Exchange Place? I feel like close lining those people! They are the same people who don't let you get off the train and rush in as soon as the doors open. - With the WTC construction, every morning I'm saying silent prayers that we aren't dropped off on the Hoboken side. If you are, it seems like 50 people converging (with no right of way or yielding) onto a narrow staircase. - Once you get to Church Street, it feels like a scene from Braveheart. Both armies are lined up across from each other and once the traffic light turns, they charge at each other. Absolute incompetence. If the PATH station is down/closed then they SHOULD POST AN UPDATE OR SERVICE ADVISORY ON THE WEBSITE SO PEOPLE CAN PLAN ACCORDINGLY! Unfortunately, PATH management is so inept, it is difficult to rely on the PATH if you really need to be someplace on time. Sunday 11ish AM the day before New Years and World Trade Center Station is closed. All the gates are down. Security guard stationed at the entrance knows nothing. Website says station SHOULD BE OPEN! Shit happens, I understand, but before leaving my apt I checked the PATH website for any possible issues...NOTHING listed. When I was stranded outside the WTC Station I checked again and still NOTHING. Not bad enough I had to go to Newark, but the ineptitude of whoever is running the show at PATH is a disgrace! This is not some little subway in suburbia, many thousands of people depend on this. Do I sound angry!? I was. Ugh, why, why??! I ride PATH at least once a week, usually on the weekends. I have a love-hate (mostly hate) relationship: it gets me out of Newark for the day, but it makes me absolutely nauseated for hours afterwards. Could they have possibly made a track that's more willy nilly? I'm someone who adores public transit. Subways? Awesome. Buses? Cool. Trains? Great. But THIS train is absolutely unbearable. The only reason I subject myself to it 2-3 times a week is because it's the cheapest way to get to Manhattan. Otherwise, the scheduling is wonky, the ride is tumultuous, and the loooooong waits at transfer points are miserable. Also, the transfer at JSQ just seems like unnecessary torture to me. You're cheap (for now) and you run reasonably on schedule. But PATH, when you start at PATH Plaza/Journal Square in Jersey City, I have some issues with you. Why are there no trash cans ANYWHERE? I mean, not on the platforms, not on the mezzanine above the platforms, not even anywhere IN PATH Plaza. Do you WANT me to litter? Also, why is the down escalator ALWAYS broken? I mean, 13 out of 15 days, it is busticated. Also, why is the escalator to the platforms going UP instead of down at morning rush hour? Also, why are the MetroCard lanes the ones FURTHEST from the escalators, so you have to walk around the crowd of people who have congregated at the entrance to the PATH? Do you not like Metro Card users? You want us to use your Smart Link cards? Or maybe the PATH multi-trip cards? Why do you encourage us to have multiple cards instead of doing it all on the trusty MetroCard? Don't you want to give me a seamless experience with your buddies over at the MTA in NYC? When I'm coming home from 14th or 9th or Christopher St., why is it like the wind tunnel of hell? I descend how many flights of stairs - four, five? - with wind pummeling me in the face. And why can't you tell us approximately how long until the next train comes? You know, so while we're standing in Satan's wind tunnel, at least we have something to distract ourselves with. read more

I've been using PATH for 5 years. The cars are newer, but service is getting worse. There are 4 escalators at Newport - all 4 have never worked at the same time since I've lived there. Once one gets fixed, another breaks down. WTC and Exchange Place are shut down on weekends until 2015. Even more people are using PATH now that the Pulaski Skyway is under construction for the next 2 years. I have notified PATH that they need to supply more service on weekends (trains come every 10-45 minutes depending on the time of day), but they have yet to do anything about it. Service is decent from 8 AM to 8 PM on weekdays, but beware using overnight and weekends. You're better off driving in or just staying away from the city if you can. read more

Why do you ask that I would even be using PATH trains? Well my dad decided to stay in Jersey for our latest trip to NYC. Not only did we have to rent a car, we still ended up having to take public transportation anyways. At least PATH provides a pretty legitimate way to get from NJ to NY. I could see how locals might have to utilize this. read more

I know some people have problems with PATH, but I've always enjoyed riding it over NJ Transit. Some pluses include (1) it's cheaper than NJ Transit to get to the city, (2) it runs 24/7 unlike some of the rail services in NJ, (3) the rail cars are newer which means they're generally less filthy, (4) you can use your MetroCard on PATH (so long as your car is pay-per-ride), and (5) its relatively fast and keeps to schedules. Sure, there's lots to love, but PATH also has drawbacks such as (1) No WIFI--maybe I'm asking too much?, (2) only stops in certain areas of the city--which usually isn't a problem for me but can be an issue for others, (3) it's fast but it's also a wild ride--I've seen people fall because of the twists and turns, (4) on the weekends, you HAVE to stop at Hoboken if you're heading up to or going down from 33rd, and (5) there's always some ass who eats on the PATH and drops food everywhere--stop that! read more

Gonna edit this baby in light of recent events: PATH raised their fare in the recent years, and is gearing up to raise them yet again; their price will now rival that of MTA. This money is clearly not being spent fixing the constant signal issues, and didn't prevent this "track condition" that has suspended all 33rd Street service for two days running now. All I can assume is that the price hike is to foot the bill for the ungodly new WTC station that is, frankly, excessive and screams "I'm compensating." It's a real slap in the face for PATH goers who have been begging for improved service for years now. I'll give PATH one thing: they're clean. That's about the extent of the benefits though. I'd like to know where the money from the now increased fare is going, because it's sure not going towards more reliable equipment. Signal problems, track issues, mechanical malfunctions are literally a daily occurrence for me (I'd like to mention that I was one of the many people trapped in the tunnel between Newport and Grove this past summer DURING THE EVENING RUSH for almost two hours due to "signal problems"). Train service has come to a screeching halt without warning on multiple occasions due to, you guessed it, signal problems; nothing more annoying than having to change your morning commute without any warning. Stations have zero trash cans, I'm assuming to discourage people from bringing their McDonalds on the train, but it ends up just being an inconvenience if you have any other trash to get rid of. I don't even know why they bother having a schedule, because the trains just come whenever. They run pretty frequently during rush hour, but any time else give yourself an extra 10-15 minutes to get to your destination, because you'll probably end up waiting. I really REALLY wish buses were a more feasible option for where I live; I'd happily pay the higher fare if it meant not having to rely on PATH. I prefer a grungy but on time MTA train any day. read more
