Backside of library. They're doing pickups here on this side.

I've come here pre-COVID days because it's close to home. It's a bit smaller than what I'm used to because I grew up going to the Berryessa branch since I was young, but the selection is fine here. I always liked looking at the new books they have because they always have fresh finds at this branch. During COVID, they are allowing pickups (appt schedule online) on holds and you text them when you've arrived. They set up a table in the back and do contactless pickups. Returning books is the same, of course.

This is our neighborhood library and we are so lucky to have it. We regularly come here on Saturdays for story time. The library is always clean and organized. It has a great children's collection. The New Picture Books are always filled with wonderful brand new books. In December they have a holiday event filled with kids activities, face painting and photo op with Santa!! Please keep our libraries well funded.

It's been over a year since I came to this library. I think it deserves an update. Still clean, organized and kid friendly. Noticed kids love this place-but they're quite today. No day care today I guess. They have more references available from last year. I also noticed that their teen section got bigger in book selections. They do have tons of movies that you can borrow or watch in the library. Very cool! I'm a happy camper.

This branch opened on June 28, 2008. It was formerly known as Empire Branch Library [http://www.yelp.com/biz/empire-branch-library-san-jose-city-of-san-jose]. It's right across from a school, so I'm sure the kids will be filling the place during the weekdays. Backesto Park is just two blocks away, so the location is quite convenient. While the design of the library is the same as all remodeled libraries in this system, this one feels a bit more cramped than others. The computer room holds 25 computers, and there are just two study rooms. That being said, the main entry room feels very open. You'll find the audio CDs and floating bookshelves here. You can park on the street, but it's better to get into the lot between the library and the school. The exterior returns are here anyway. Because the library is on the smaller side, the selection is not as great. MLK isn't that far away if you really need to find something. So, Joyce Ellington is not a destination library, but if you're in the area, check it out.

The library is relatively new with several little rooms for meet ups etc. and a larger auditorium where they have book sales and classes/lectures. There's also a way to get discount tickets through the library, but I have never done it myself (I think you need to check in the first of the month or something). The library is clean and well kept, and the books have been in relatively good condition. The DVDs are often damaged, but I haven't found any circulation of DVDs that isn't like that. Library also has eBooks and the ability to place holds via the website or app. Holds are picked up to the left of the parking structure entrance in the first set of shelves on the left as you walk past the self checkout kiosks.

Just select SCC Library District to access. Space: This library is brightly lit and its ambiance feels welcoming and friendly. It's not enormous, but it seems to have the necessary sections and I was impressed there was an entire section of books written in Chinese. Very cool! Most of the library is one floor but there is one section that has a second floor. There is a variety of seating throughout the library including cafe style seating, arm chairs, "diner booth" high tech seating with large screens and plugs, bar style, "team" tables equipped with plugs. I was very pleased with all the options I could choose from. And many people seemed to take residence in some of the spaces and this please me because that's exactly what I need, a place where I can work for hours on end. I did notice some seating is cushioned but a lot of seating is either wood or plastic. Not sure how long the comfort will last over the hours. Fuel: No food in the library. I do see some people drinking water or even cupped drinks. I appreciate it, just make sure you clean up after yourself. Next to my table there is a trash bin and there are recycling and garbage bins around the library.

When my daughter was little, she loved reading in one of the cozy upholstered circular reading nooks in the Children's Room. Besides books/audiobooks/DVD's/CD's, you could borrow park passes, various kinds of board games, puzzles and kits (such as stargazing telescope kit, pollinator kit, ukulele kit, gardening kit, and sewing machine kit.) Recently, I've noticed that you could even borrow an induction cooktop. They also offer free 3D printing (1 per month), and drop-in tech help. They have a seed library as well. They have a technology lab, and you could reserve study rooms. The library also hosts different events for adults and children. I attended the "Summery Vegetable Success" event in the Technology Lab on Sunday. The speaker, a UC Master Gardener, was very experienced, and her talk was very interesting and informative! I feel so fortunate to have such a wonderful library in our community.

I had a very disappointing experience today, September 3, at the San Jose Almaden Branch Library…read more As a resident of the Almaden area for more than 15 years, I have used this library frequently for working and studying and have always appreciated having it as a community resource. Today was my first time reserving one of the group meeting rooms because I had an important Zoom meeting scheduled from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. With the assistance of a library staff member, I successfully reserved the room and received an email confirmation. About five minutes after my Zoom meeting had started, the branch manager interrupted my meeting and told me that I needed to leave because the room belonged to someone else. Since I saw that a group of children was waiting to use the room, I cooperated and left without arguing. After my meeting, however, I showed the manager my confirmation email, which clearly demonstrated that I had reserved the room correctly. I was then told that there had been a system error and that the room had been double-booked. What I found most upsetting was not the system error itself, but the way the situation was handled. Before asking me to leave in the middle of my meeting, the manager did not check my confirmation email or first verify whether I had made a valid reservation. Instead, I felt that it was immediately assumed that I was the one who had made a mistake. As an Asian woman, I also could not help but wonder whether I was being treated differently, particularly because the other party involved was white. I cannot know the manager's intention, but the interaction left me feeling uncomfortable, dismissed, and disrespected. I understand that technical errors and double bookings can happen. However, I believe the appropriate response would have been to first verify both reservations, explain the situation respectfully, and work with both parties to find a solution rather than abruptly asking one person to leave an ongoing meeting. After being a longtime resident and regular user of this library, I was extremely disappointed by today's experience. I hope the library will review both its room reservation system and how staff handle situations like this so that all patrons are treated with courtesy, fairness, and respect.
