Our family has been coming to the LG Library for many years, even before they remodeled in 2012. This library is beautiful (both inside and outside), the librarians/staff are friendly/helpful and their restrooms are always clean. When my daughter was little, she loved reading in one of the cozy upholstered circular reading nooks in the Children's Room. Besides books/audiobooks/DVD's/CD's, you could borrow park passes, various kinds of board games, puzzles and kits (such as stargazing telescope kit, pollinator kit, ukulele kit, gardening kit, and sewing machine kit.) Recently, I've noticed that you could even borrow an induction cooktop. They also offer free 3D printing (1 per month), and drop-in tech help. They have a seed library as well. They have a technology lab, and you could reserve study rooms. The library also hosts different events for adults and children. I attended the "Summery Vegetable Success" event in the Technology Lab on Sunday. The speaker, a UC Master Gardener, was very experienced, and her talk was very interesting and informative! As a college student, I spend a lot of time studying at libraries all over San jose. Sometimes you need a change of scenery to stay motivated, so I decided to try the Los Gatos Library for the first time while studying Calculus 3. I'll give credit where it's due: the library itself is beautiful. Very clean, modern, quiet, and honestly one of the nicest study environments I've been to. I ended up staying there for a couple hours completely locked into studying, and I genuinely enjoyed the atmosphere. Unfortunately, when I walked back to my car, I found a $42 parking citation because apparently almost all nearby parking is limited to 90 minutes. To be fair, I take accountability because I missed the signs. I wasn't familiar with the area and was more focused on navigating traffic, checking out the new scenery and finding the library than checking every parking post. Still, I was honestly shocked because I've never been to a library where nearly every surrounding spot is capped at only 90 minutes. For regular visitors maybe this isn't an issue, but for students, remote workers, or anyone doing serious study sessions, 90 minutes is unrealistic. Most people don't go to a library to stay for just an hour and a half. Even moving your car around becomes stressful and inconvenient. So this is just a heads up for fellow college students and study grinders: the library itself is great, but be very careful with parking because one long study session can quickly turn into an expensive mistake. 42$ for me as a broke college student really left a bitter taste in my mouth even if it was my fault. This library is located in the small but quaint town of Los Gatos. We were passing through on our way to the coast and saw the library and decided to check it out, the building was spectacular (property tax payers' taxes at work, lol =D), layout was logical, not to mention the books were amazing, and the staff were very kind and helpful. Plus the bookstore had so many books, and DVDs that we walked out of the store with seven books! (By the way, children's books were half price!!) Definitely would come again!!!!! read more

It doesn't get better for a small town library. The building has a number of different areas and feel much bigger than it looks from the outside. The children's area is well-stocked with books and educational toys for kids to interact with. The librarians are very kind and helpful. They run many weekly programs for kids and reading groups for adults. I think the thing that most stands out about the Los Gatos Library are the books. Almost all are hardbound and look like they've never been read. Taking out a book is like getting a brand new copy from a bookstore. Beautiful library with an amazing team that work there! Anytime I've had questions, the front desk or upstairs desk host have always been super informative. The restrooms are always clean and tidy. They have one located on the first floor as you walk straight in behind a few large bookshelves. More restrooms are located on the 2nd floor to the left, down the aisle. This library has so many nooks and crannies that you can easily find while either studying or perusing a potential book check out. They even have a lovely area on the backside of the building for hanging out. The library itself is pretty modern and somewhat futuristic. When you walk in you see the cool stairway to get to the 2nd floor. They have modern art as you walk up the stairs. Super cool! They offer various backpacks filled with tools for projects and adventures like hiking, knitting, etc. to check out. They also have a calendar of events like story time for children, support groups, informational meetings, etc. Another amazing advantage is that you can download the Hoopla app to your smart tv and you have the ability to choose movies, audiobooks from your local library. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AND I WILL NEVER EVER GO AGAIN. So I arrived to this Library via Scooter, (Mind you i am 14 yrs old) I went to go see my older brother and his 2 friends. I was sucking on a Red heart Lolipop that I was given by the crossing gaurd. Thats when the worker who's name is: Rachel, told me 2 times to eat the lollipop outside or throw it away. I said I would but I the 2nd time I WAS NOT EATING IT I WAS JUST HOLDING IT TALKING TO MY BROTHER AND HIS 2 FRIENDS, She came up to me and just said I gotta go outside. I just threw it away and went out of the library and cried even on the way home. I have been going here for 8 1/2 years and have never had an experience like that. read more

This is the best library I've been to in the South Bay. Go figure it's in Los Gatos, guess those property taxes are good for something This library combines a pleasant location, being a modern and clean building, having an insane kids section with all kinds of toys. They have lots of comfortable chairs, easy parking nearby (watch out for Priuses as usual), and the staff is very nice. If you're anywhere nearby and like libraries this is the best you're going to fine. It's better than the Cupertino library, Vineland, and Cambrian Park ones by a good margin. Who writes a review of a library? This library is just that amazing, honestly. If you have kids, this is definitely a library to go to! They have a sensory corner, where they have different types of fun materials. They have wheels and gears, sequined cloths, toys with different colored shapes, and trains/legos as well. They have the cutest little "treehouse" area where you and your little one could sit and read, and circular windows that looked like stained glass, where your kiddo can curl up with a book. My kids immediately felt at home at this library, which is amazing. The librarians are also so incredibly nice! You can get a library card with your CA driver's license and don't have to be a Los Gatos resident. Rachel, at the circulation desk was so helpful, pleasant, and polite, and even gave my daughter a fidget object while she gathered my information. The only one annoying thing is that their storytime is at 11 AM or 11:30 AM, which is awfully close to nap time for a lot of kiddos, but maybe that's the only time that the librarian/guest is available? Honestly most amazing library ever. Only wish other libraries were as thoughtful and intentional with spaces like this one. read more

Los Gatos Library is a gem! The staff here are incredibly friendly and always willing to help. The library itself is a beautiful space--perfect for reading, studying, or just relaxing. One of the coolest features is the 3D printing service! Patrons can use it for free (up to once a month with some limits on pieces), which is awesome for small projects. Parking can be tricky on busy days, but there's street parking nearby if the lot is full. Libraries like this remind me why they're so important to the community. I feel the need to add that libraries are for all. It is a community space. It is for children, for teenagers, for the homeless whose smell that the reviewer below cannot tolerate (ETA that I see his review is from 2019, but my point stands). The Los Gatos Library has a lot of potential to add more seating around the library. I came here for the first time and had trouble finding a place to work. One thing that I didn't like was that the librarians here don't keep the loud ass high school kids in check. Other libraries I would go to would quiet down the students if they're talking too loud but they didn't when I was here. Furthermore, the wifi speeds here are pretty slow. It's almost 2019 and it shouldn't be taking like 30 seconds just to load up Google. One plus of this library versus other libraries like Milpitas is that the inside doesn't smell like homeless people which is a big plus since I stopped going to Milpitas because I couldn't tolerate the smell anymore. read more

Libraries are one of my favorite places to visit and the Los Gatos Library is a great one. To be honest, I've only checked out the children's area but I've been there many times. They have many programs for kids and adults. The space in the children's area is wonderful and large--not just books but a discovery table and computers/tablets. The cool thing about this library is that anybody who holds a California driver's license can get a library card here. It doesn't matter where you live whether you live in Los Gatos, San Jose, Los Angeles, Sacramento, etc. Also, I love that their limit on checking out books is 99 items. So many libraries I've been to limit patrons to 20-30 items at a time. When you have kids, picture books add up fast so I appreciate the high count limit. The parking lot is a bit small and you only have 90 minutes but I've never not found a spot. I love LG! read more

Size matters not when it comes to public libraries. This très petite library is one of the best for its size. Even better than some libraries twice its size. It is a modern library that fits into Silicon Valley like a hand in a glove. It has all the modern accoutrements that make up the many ways we access information. Library collections have evolved from books and periodicals to include film, video, e-books, internet... Tout dans le monde. What is surprising is the number of young people here. Los Gatos High School is spitting distance (no I didn't try it) from the library. Many parents use the library as a meeting point for their young'uns. Which is kind of cool. Today's libraries also seem to serve as a safe place for the homeless and this one is no different. It is a peaceful scene here as it should be. This is a really nice library that was remodeled not too long ago. I came here on a Monday morning and the main parking lot was full, but there were a number of spots (90 minute limit) on Main Street. The children's area is really cute, with fun decorations on the ceiling and cool little spots for children to sit (or for parents to take a picture ;) ). The baby story time on Mondays at 11:30am seems to be super popular- when we went, there were at least 40 babies! Kind of crazy. I liked how there was a librarian leading the story time and another librarian sitting in the middle, demonstrating hand gestures and movements you can do with your baby. They also gave books to each parent & baby so we could read along with the librarian- very thoughtful. read more

We visited the Los Gatos Library for the first time today for story time. They have story time for preschool aged kids every Tuesday at 1030am. At first I wasn't sure the time was correct as the library doesn't actually open until 11am but upon arrival I saw a sign on the front door that said to enter along the right side of the building, through the garden for story time. Story time lasts from 1030-11am and includes the reading of several books PLUS singing and dancing! Which must be why they do it before the library actually opens. The children's area of the library is great! There are lots of cute little reading nooks and activities mounted on the end of many of the shelves. Plus legos! My 20 month old had a great time visiting the Los Gatos library, in fact she didn't want to leave! read more

Having now frequented a number of story times with my mini me, I finally feel qualified to review the Los Gatos Library for their Monday morning storytime for children. 10/10. Definitely come here and try it out at least once. They start with some singing (yes, with actions), then two or three stories interspersed with more singing, and afterwards they get some toys out so the kids can free play and socialize with the other kids. Awesome opportunity also for parents to meet and chat, and they don't rush you out - you're welcome to stay as long as you want. The storytime happens before the library opens, so you have to enter to the right by the side door, and the age range is anywhere from a few months to about a year. Really glad I discovered this storytime, and my little Moosh loves it. read more

This is my favorite library in the bay- it's very lovely outside, especially now with the fall colors. Both outside and inside have a nice ambiance. This little downtown library is getting replaced by a new version that is now at the footer pouring stage. I know because they have a web cam showing day to day status. I joined the library today after dropping off Halloween candy for the military. No one came to my house and I didn't want it where I can nibble like only a lactose intolerant should never try.....no dark chocolate in any of those bags.....grrr! I bought a few books from the Friends of the Library and now am a sustaining member since I will be going there often. I wish I had avoided paying at Kinko's when Comcast left me with no internet, phone or tv until Verizon & Directv could be scheduled. (See Comcast review for that horror story). Free wifi and you don't have to buy overpriced iced tea or having screaming ADHD children sail empty wheeled office chairs in your direction! When I got home my husband called me about a legal question regarding a rental deposit. It has been held by the landlord of his deceased father since January. I went online and couldn't find what I needed but did find the reference book's name. Then I went on the library's website which has each chapter of the book available online and printed off the entire pdf file for deposits. I won't have to go to the library and lug this oversize monster home. read more

I wonder, as a matter of Yelp policy, if the old reviews should be deleted in a situation like this. I guess it is the same institution, but it's about as different of a structure as the Taj Mahal is to, um, my apartment building. For one thing, the rating would be a lot higher! Yeah, so before you had a, well, a hut, or a hovel (the second floor was subterranean) and now you have a glass palace with plenty of room to move around in, all kinds of furniture, plenty of outlets, and so on. You also have an even more dedicated "graphic novel" and manga section which is not even hidden inside of the YA section (maybe I should be shamed for looking for that, but I'd rather not be!). And now they have blu-ray as well, and a nice fully-stocked coffee cart (if I didn't always go to Purple Onion or Los Gatos Brewing Co.), I would have tried it by now; perhaps I'll update when I finally do). One thing that they already had in the old building was some spiffy iMacs, and while maybe they could've gotten a better deal elsewhere, it sure beats the pants off of the aging computers they have in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale. This might seem trivial but unlike me (who is writing this review from one of those iMacs right this moment) I think that most of the people here actually rely on this computer lab for Internet access, and having ancient systems doesn't help when you're trying to navigate today's Internet. I'm sure this part is true everywhere, but using this lab I've had the opportunity to overhear the very patient people who work here help out some of these hapless folk, and I'm very impressed with their ability and willingness to help, so props for that as well. Probably the only downside for you, if this is your city library, is that they are not connected to Link+ or part of the county system, so you can't request anything that's not on site without getting ILL and paying a minimum of $5. The selection, however, is pretty good from what I can tell, so hopefully that will never be an issue for you! Santa Clara's is bigger, but this is prettier. Oh yeah, and it has slightly better hours. read more

Very fine and practically laid-out new library. In the same league as the Mountain View Library & Palo Alto's Mitchell Park Branch. Surrounded by trees & bristling with windows, much of the seating area on the second floor, and some on the first, is bathed in natural light. The balance of the illumination comes from warm white fluorescents. Much attention has clearly been paid to the lighting scheme, as it's easy on the eyes in bright or cloudy weather. Schoolkids aren't quiet, nor are they encouraged to use "indoor" voices. But the loudest offenders seem to be the soccer moms cutting up near the exit doors. Their prattle reverberates throughout both floors. Earbuds, -phones, or -plugs recommended. Alternatively, if you write dialog for histrionic TV screenplays, come here for some unmatched source material. read more

I'm writing this while I wait for the free painting night for adults to start. Yes, you read that right, folks: this most excellent library has terrific events for adults. It's not just for the neighborhood kiddos and the high schoolers from across the street. As Stefan says, this place has everything: a parking lot (90 min), WiFi, beautiful surrounding gardens and books, of course books! Lots of cozy spots to read, work or chillax. The decor is sleek and modern but still cozy. I especially like the mini reading room dedicated to magazines and the hidey-holes outside. There used to be a tiny cafe/used-book shop up front but it got expanded and moved to a neighboring building. Well, the paint night is about to start. I heart this place a lot. There are tons of outlets etc to be able to use for laptops and the place is quiet enough to get work done-- but if you talk in a hushed tone you don't get the death stare. Beautiful and clean library. Great atmosphere for studying, sometimes... The main issue here is that the library has turned into a daycare for many families, especially in the summer. There's no noise control at all. Children are free to roam around all over on the first and second floor while screaming. No regulation from either the guardians or the library staff, whatsoever. Trying to do work here in the morning is very difficult. The amount of talking between the library staff and the customers is also intolerable. I think people sometimes forget that this is a library and people are here for a reason: to focus. It sucks because this library is close to my resident and is much nicer than the Saratoga one but it's hard to get any work done here with all the distractions. read more

It has been awhile since I've been to the library in Los Gatos. I had last been a few years ago before they moved into the new building. There's plenty of parking right in front of the library but I am so disappointed that it is only 90 minute parking. Coming to this library to study will impose even more stress on you as you keep looking at your watch to avoid the meter maids giving you a ticket. The library itself is beautiful inside and very well maintained. I chose to sit upstairs in a corner and didn't notice noise that would distract me from studying. There's a variety of places you can sit and a variety of things you can sit on...comfy chairs, chairs at a table, benches, floor, etc. There's plenty of areas to charge/keep electronics charged. All in all I think this would only be my library of choice on Mondays since the branch closest to my house is closed on Mondays. If the parking issue is resolved, I'm 110% I'd come here more often. read more

Simply fabulous in all respects -- the building, the layout, the seating areas, inventory, events -- but most especially the staff. The disparaging reviews about the staff are inaccurate and laughable. If you are looking to work, there are several places like Office Depot and other locations that are quiet & suited to your purpose. I think it's great that high schoolers hang out here and yes, occasionally they can be loud but more often than not they are respectful and aware of others in the library, unlike many grown ass adults who subject everyone to their personal & business cell phone calls in other public places or just walking down the street. I've lived in a couple different cities/states and in the UK, this is the best library bar none. read more

I only have three topics which I am comfortable discussing with anyone unfortunate enough to be sat next to me at a bar/party/awkward social gathering: libraries, typography, and trivia. Over the recent years, I've realised everyone fancies themselves a trivia buff and hates to be outdone, that no one wants to talk about ligatures or descenders or the recent surge in the use of sans serifs, and that most people haven't been to a library since high school. This library reminded me of why that is. When I think of a library, I think of a place that is buzzing with patrons running from computer terminals to printers, tomboyish little girls with stacks of paperbacks in their arms, the gardening enthusiast perusing the magazine racks, and the weirdo in the 364's. There is something for everyone, literally, even if that means using the internet to print out insalubrious materials or sleeping in the stacks or the Scrapbooking Mystery series (I'm not joking: "Motif for Murder", "Frill Kill", and "Death By Design" are all packed with suspense and scrapbooking tips). Also, library staff are pretty hot-well, not all of them, but there are some good looking guys and gals in those stacks, just look. But back to the Los Gatos Library. This is the library that everyone ELSE thinks of when I start drunkenly babbling about OPACs and how you can borrow TV show box sets now. They look at me like, What ? The libraries that non-library obsessed folks are familiar with are a lot like this place: dim lighting and uninviting staff and confusing organization. Upstairs is a dismal rack of new arrivals, but you're likely to miss it unless you run into it. Most of the books are downstairs, where there's also an awkward row of computers for internet access. The whole place is equipped with wifi, but the seating area downstairs is so small that I don't feel like I could Google pictures of Alan Rickman without people staring over my shoulder. I did find the book I need, but it's twenty years old and in the sixth chapter, there's some stains... hmm. There is also substantial molding, which is not only gross, but basically cancer for books. I need to let them know, so they can throw this guy out, but honestly, mold is something the staff should be aware of. Of course, I feel awful for actually complaining about a library. But I will note that there are a few cool things this library has that I haven't found at other ones, but only one will matter to normal people: their online catalog features a tag cloud (so you can see similarly tagged items-okay, that's the nerdy one), and you can actually put new movies on hold ! That being said, they usually only get one copy of new movies. Maybe the really rad employees and good new fiction books were out when I was there. But still, their collection is old and the whole feel of the place is decidedly unsexy. Sigh. Yeah, I feel bad for not raving about a library, but clearly not all are created equally. I feel like the Los Gatos Library is my boring, inadequate guy, and were out for dinner, and he's way more excited than I am. Over his shoulder I can see a totally hot guy on a date-another library, with better books and all Law & Order: SVU dvds !-and I imagine myself sitting with him instead. I'm giggling at the hottie's jokes and running my fingers along his arms, looking into his big eyes and drooling. Damn, he's great. But OH ! He's not my boyfriend. I have to come back to reality, and I feel guilty and start lying and telling my man that he's so funny ! And sweet ! And *gag* hot ! But all that lying, and the fake relationship I now have with that stranger at the other table, starts to chip away at my soul. And I realise I'm only cheating myself if I settle for mediocrity. So when we get up to leave, I walk past the hot guy and slip him my number. Don't settle. If this isn't your library, go find one you love. read more

This is a great local community library. I would especially recommended it for children and young adults. Its close proximity to the Los Gatos High School makes this an ideal spot for teenagers (and younger students) to do homework, hold study or tutoring sessions, or to do research at. The library's children's section is very well maintained and frequently and thoughtfully updated. Several reading groups and many other activities and events, such as knitting on Tuesdays (currently), give elementary and middle school students plenty of stimulating participatory possibilities. My niece (9 yrs) and nephew (going on 7) love to roam the library and could easily spend hours just browsing through the books. I do eventually have to make them leave. :-) Coming to think of it, they have never actually asked to leave! They also love the staff in the children's section, who are very approachable and always answer the kids' questions helpfully and with such sincerity that it just makes me smile! They really see the kids as actual people here (I know, unbelievable!), not just as some nuisance (as they are sometimes seen in other kid-oriented places...). My only "beef" with the place is that members of the regular staff from the main section of the library once accused us of stealing a cd! We had returned the case with the cd (we always check before returning the items to the drop-boxes), so I guess the cd must have fallen out in the drop-box. In any case, although I explained to the staff that I had made sure the cd was in its case before returning it, they didn't believe me and wanted me to replace the cd. I wouldn't mind just donating money to the library, but this was just wrong. Anyways, I got my way in the end and got her to remove the billed amount from our library account, so I only deducted one star for this one-time debacle! :-) read more

5 stars? Hmmm. Yes the building is old and the restrooms are at times occupied by the local transients but where else in Los Gatos (other than perhaps the Happy Dragon) can you get so much value for the dollar. I'm talking free parking, free books, free audio, free video, free computer sations and free WiFi. The placed is stuffed with a breadth of media to entertain and educate. There are separate areas for children, teen and adults. The main building has comfortable chairs and seating areas for studying or lounging. The Children's area offers book clubs, Lego clubs and special events such as a wild animal meet and greet. The library website introduces newbees to the system and allows you to reserve and renew a book. The DVD section is outstanding and filled with top picks and classics. The new $18 million dollar library will be a welcome addition in 2012 and will hopefully have more space to lounge and much needed coffee/snack bar. read more

I love public libraries. This was the first one I'd been to since I was 14 and living in the suburbs of Chicago, so my standards may still be in its molding state. I went on a Tuesday morning right before my midterm exam to review a little bit since it was so close to the location of my proctor, and with all of my classes being online, I needed internet access. Getting internet access was really a simple process.. I stood in line for less than 3 minutes, talked to the nice lady behind the desk, filled out a form, got my mini keychain library card (I live in San Mateo & that didn't become a problem), and minutes later.. had internet access on my laptop. My only complaint was that the internet was so slow that I couldn't watch the streaming mid-term review video online. At all. Every 5 seconds, it would stop. So really, I didn't end up getting any studying done. I understand that it may be on purpose, so people don't sit at the library and take up all the bandwidth downloading episodes of Lost or Grey's Anatomy. Still, it was disappointing at the time. For being a place with books made available to all, great staff, new titles in their DVD section, and internet for mild browsing/research... it deserves 4 stars. Just don't go there expecting to be able to stream anything online, even if it's reference/study material. read more
