Contacted to provide an estimate. Arrived and looked an outlet for 30 minutes. Sent a bill for over $450.00 for 3 hours of "diagnostic" work. No work was asked for and no work was done. Then, after providing feedback, they will take you to court if you don't pay for the work. When showing up for court there are 14 people taking off work to attend small claims court because of their inaccurate billing. The worst billing practices I had ever seen. read more

I had a very poor experience with Jack McCurdy. He consistently underbid the work then hit us with large change orders later. The worst example was the wiring of our cabinet lighting. He was given full kitchen drawings and signed a contract to wire the kitchen for "all cabinets." When it came time for him to do the work, he claimed not to know about half of the cabinets in the kitchen, even though he had all drawings. Then he hit us with a huge change order to do the work that he committed in writing to do! When I asked him to hold to his contract he threatened to tie me up in court with legal action. I don't have the time to fight him, so all I can is warn other people not to do business with McCurdy Electric. Stay away. read more

Just an absolutely joke. Totally ripped me off by installing a dishwasher outlet using the same wiring and same circuit. Said they installed a new one. They did not. $600+! Charged $450 service fee for two people ($225 each). They needed two people for this? No way... read more

It is too bad I cannot go less than one star. In any event, I have never felt so ripped off in my life after using this company. Initial estimate was for almost $4,000. They open the wall and it more than doubled. When the electrical inspector came, McCurdy electrician was nowhere to be found. Failed the inspection and was socked for another $1,500. Had a very disappointing experience today when I called to make an appointment to have a smoke detector installed (I was told by the fire department that I must have it installed by a licensed electrician so I complied). It wasn't an emergency and I never suggested it was but she offered me a same day appointment which I accepted since I was available. The guy showed up 30 min late and spent 20 min installing the detector and testing the other smoke detectors. then told me it would be $155! What??!! I called the office as I was sure the electrician had it wrong. Nope. And then she added that "they weren't charging the same day service fee". I'm sorry, what? I feel completely ripped off. That was extortion. But now I know why she had a same day appointment available as I can't imagine many repeat customers with that kind of service. I certainly won't be calling them again. read more

Logoed truck, always on time. Upgraded service to 100 AMP. Shebeeb and Brandon dug the trenches, ran the wires and quite honestly worked hard getting me back up with electricity before they left. McCurdy Electric even pulled the required permits and met with the City Inspector at my home. Just sat back with a book and let the professionals do their magic. Shebeeb and Brandon installed receptacles and switches in my multi-family to prepare us to install some garbage disposals. Shebeeb took time to walk me through the options of how we could do the job and the pros/cons. He and Brandon were hard-working the entire time on the job, considerate of the living space they were working in, and periodically checked in with me to let me know how it was going. I was very happy with the work they did, not to mention, they patched up the small holes they made to feed the wire (I've had other contractors leave the holes). Also worth noting, the office staff was great too. Easy to book, responsive, and booked me just a few days after my call. Also, I got an automated text reminder the morning of. I would have told them to do it another way, but now it is too late. It looks like crap. All of that and they overpriced the job and I paid more than it should have cost. Stay away. These guys were great, thank god. After months of trying to find an electrician to do some minor repairs. So I spoke with five different electricians I found in the Lynn area, every one of them showed up to look at the job and give an estimate. the problem was after numerous calls, none of them sent the estimate or returned calls ( I get it everyone is busy but honestly) - So I called an old electrician I used in Lynn many years ago - he had since retired and JP McCurdy now was servicing his customers. Best experience we have had with a contractor - first showed up exactly on time to review the job and told me they were busy - Sent the estimate - when he said he would - so another plus. Than when we called to say we wanted to move forward, the office staff were incredible helpful in coordinating the job. Two guys showed up - on time - very professional and extremely personable. They first discussed Covid protocols - which was a plus - and before they even started asked two questions that I was really impressed with 1. Did we have any pets they needed to be aware of and that could not go outside - which we do have two indoor cats - 2. If we had multiple bathrooms, given Covid was there one we would prefer them to use - (they could use any of the three if they needed to) but the point was, they were two questions that showed they cared about our thoughts. Anyways - they explained everything they did and were informative - I cannot say enough how impressed we were with them and the estimate was spot on. My experience was in the past, but Yelp was not around then. I am reviewing JP McCurdy as I look at my invoice, and in months later, still can't believe what these guys did. 1 Light Switch 3 Blank Plates 2 4" Square Blank Plates 1 Box Extension 50' 14/2 rx 10' 14/3rx 1 4" Round old work box 1 Dimmer Grand Total $550.00 I used to live in Maynard, these guys posted an add on CList, and I responded to it. They posted an ad because they were looking for work, right? I can only imagine 'why'.... Tese 'kids' Brian and Mike, spent 4 hours at my house. Mike was fresh out of school, or maybe not.. he was slooooow, and had to keep asking Mike questions. When I say slow.. I paid this guy what $40-50 an hour, and he didn't do a damn thing. He covered up some boxes with a blank plate... this guy should have been billed at $15 an hour. My dimmer was flickering.. Brian looked at it. Said it probably couldn't be fixed. Added a dimmer to my living room, that was quick and easy 2 Critical (are you serious)... The main reason I wanted these guys out to my house was to install some track lighting. Brian had to read the directions.... that took about 10 minutes. I was floored. You need to read directions on how to install track lighting? I thought these guys were professionals. He installed it, did a decent job. I had an installed Carbon Monoxide detector.. hardwired. When Mike did some work, they had to make a change to the detector because it wasn't working. They couldn't figure out 'why'. So, esentially they 'broke' my hardwired Carbon Monoxide detector, and they made me go down to the hardware store and use a plug in. If they had looked on the wall (like we realized a few months later).. the GF thing was clicked off. My husband reinstalled the thing. These 'professionals' didn't use their heads.... The bill came it was over $600. They said they got stuck in traffic and I had to pay that. I have to pay for traffic? I have to pay for them to come to me at the tune of 1 hour + EACH? This was never explained. I have never heard of this because I had never used an electrician before. Common sense to the guy who I talked to would have laid out the terms ahead of time, If someone is an hour away, don't you think they would be honest and tell them, You would get charged $100 just to come to the house. I realize time is $ and if this is the business fine.. but educate your customers, and better yet.. educate your staff. I put up a fit about it so they 'discounted' me, but nearly enough. I talked to an electrician that has been in the business for 25 years. He told me I got totally screwed. He woudl of had the job done in 2 hours by himself. McCurdy = Rip Off at customer expense.. The only reason these guys get 1 stars is because my house didn't burn down in the months after I owned it. We used McCurdy twice for electrical services and they have been really great especially with giving a reasonable estimate of costs and tailoring their services to what we needed. The first time we used them the person that came gave us a lot of different options on how to fix the problems we were having which is helpful when you are trying to figure out to fit this kind of stuff in the budget. Their pricing is reasonable and I have no complaints about the quality of the work. In the past, I have had to call back electricians after they were done but I haven't had that experience with McCurdy. Communication has been really open as well which is not something I really appreciate in these kind of service providers. Most recently we had an emergency situation and were very flexible and responsive. Overall they are our family's preferred service provider for electrical work. read more

Jack's character (he's the owner) is outstanding--he stands behind the company's work and honors his word 100%, looking to save the customer money if possible, instead of upcharging. He'll give you the straight truth about what's going on and what's needed, at a good price. I had to have knob and tube electric wiring removed so that we can insulate our house. It's a big job, and McCurdy's workers, led by Joe, were all kind, considerate, and knowledgeable about what they were doing. They even did a significant amount of work that they didn't charge me for. I couldn't be happier with what they did. Honest, professional, kind--and highly recommended! I'd call them again, and send my friends and family to them in a heartbeat. I cannot say enough good things about my experience with J.P. McCurdy Electrical Services. They went well above and beyond on our job. Most meaningful to me is that Jack McCurdy (owner) stood by his word and contract even when more work was required on our job. The electricians working in our home were diligent, thorough, and respectful. (I work from home so this was important.) The head electrician, Joe, was great to work with. He was very patient with us and always took time to answer questions. We were having all of the knob and tube removed from our home, which can be a dirty and require holes in the walls. Joe and the rest of the team did all they could to minimize the holes and mess, and even came up with ingenious ways of accessing difficult to access areas that needed rewiring. Working with McCurdy Electric felt like a godsend after having previously dealt with a dishonest contractor. I would highly recommend this company. I can sleep at night knowing that the knob and tube is definitely gone, and I can finally safely insulate my home. I called this company for two things: switching a tv plug in my room and give me an estimate to fix the problem I was having with the air conditioning tripping the electrical panel. After looking at the plug, the electrician described what he would have to do to move it: remove all baseboards. We decided not to go with it. As far as the problem I had with the air conditioning, he tested the circuit and told me after a while that everything was fine! so he did not give me an estimate. The next morning I received a bill for $260 for two hours of work when he only stayed 1.5 hours for what I was expected was an estimate... The company agreed to reduce the bill to $130. BE AWARE, an estimate is billed and the problem was not fixed!! read more

If your choice is between these guys and your cousin's unlicensed friend, well, you have a tough choice. My experience was consistent with some of the other negative reviews. I had a three day job that took them a month to complete. The electricians argued with each other in ways that were unprofessional. After five days, they just stopped showing up with no warning and no explanation. They left materials and trash (not just wire clippings -- fast food trash!) throughout the house. My contractor was appalled at the mess they left behind. When they finally returned, it still took days to complete this "three-day" job. When I called the office to complain, they yelled at me. Despite detailed specifications and explicit instructions, the electricians put lights in the wrong spots, then had to move them. And to top it off, they made a mistake on the invoice, over-charging me. read more

Started with a simple electrical job: replace a ceiling fixture and convert it from a 2-way switch to a 3-way switch (install new switch, run wire, etc). I was required to put down a deposit before they'd even come look at the job. Ok, fine, it's a small job, whatever. They get here and start talking nonsense about maybe needing two guys because they're going to have to pull up my entire attic floor to install the wiring (I had the same thing done in an identical room right next door to this one last year and didn't need any of that craziness). At first, they indicate that this might be optional and they'll just have to take a look and see. Next thing I know, they've installed the light and say they'll have to come back some other time with two guys to do that whole mess. I owe them a few hundred bucks for the half of the job I could have done on my own (and WAY too much money to pay for a light fixture change-out) and don't have the part that I needed them for. No way I'm bringing them back to install the wiring. So now I'm out the cash I had to pay for the wiring upgrade and no 3-way switch. Avoid if possible. read more

Never use this company. Months after we had them do some work that was never completed and we paid in full, we get a call about additional money owed for them coming out to fix something that they disconnected. They nickel and dime you. The office personnel are difficult to work with and apparently they never honor the word of their field supervisors saying that they do not have authority to do pricing, after we were offered a discount because my husband took a day off from work and they did not show as scheduled. My next step is to file a formal complaint to the attorney general if they continue to bully us into making another payment. Stay tuned..... read more

Nice enough guys but totally unreliable, won't show up for jobs, no returned calls, impossible to get a quote from. They will commit to a price and a date and time then vanish for a month or two, then call out of the blue and ask when you want them to start. I was recommended to these guys by my handyman who didn't have a licensed electrician on hand. I needed a licensed electrician so the handyman could not do it. I called up JP and they seemed nice enough. They set up a time about a week out and I figured it would be set. I explained how quick the job was. On the day on the service I had my wife stay at home. The 11AM so it wasn't a huge deal. He could do the job in under 5 minutes and she could get the kids. About 25 minutes before the appointment the guy called me. He gave me the sob story of how his other job was running late, blah blah blah. I said no problem. This wasn't a big job, I know that, so no biggie. He said he would be there at 2PM. OK, so I told my wife when to be back at the home. Then at 2:15 he called me. Surprise surprise he was still running late. OK I told him, no problem. When will you be there. He gave me another time. Shocker, he wasn't there at that time either. But by this point he was texting and told me he was 5 minutes away. Of course he wasn't, but that's fine. When he finally saw what I needed he got upset because it was a waste of his time. Literally got upset that I dare bothered him to fix something for me. A few minutes (like 3) he was done and left. About a week later I received a call from the company. They needed my email to send the bill. I paid for it, etc. They had the AUDACITY to write that they gave me a "discount". There was no breakdown or costs, nothing. Just a total that said "discount included". $140 and they were late, and complained. How much would this have been if they were on time and I didn't get that "preferred client discount"??? Do yourself a favor and look them up on the internet and see the other reviews of them. read more

Two others never called back and one called three days later. I am so grateful for the quick service I received. The electrician's name was Derek and he came out the same morning. He explained the problem, and the costs and within two hours I was warm again. He was knowledgeable, personable, and did a great job of cleaning up when he was finished. Horrible experience. YANKED wiring out walls creating 2-3 foot holes in our drywall. (Cost us over $600 to have someone come out and fix everything!) Went way over budget and the team was unprofessional (they walked on my granite bar LEDGE!) didn't use a level to line up pendant lights and then stated that they were "only 1/2" off." They incorrectly specified the light dimmer switch for under cabinet lights and then tried to have me pay an additional $140 after I pointed out the problem... Installed the bathroom lighting at EYE LEVEL so that there was no where to install a mirror and then had the nerve to try and charge to redo the job. 1.5 years later decided that we owed them $4700 more and threatened us (after we already went about $2K over budget) I take it that they were hurting for cash/ business so hoped we would just give in to their BS... Instead of snaking the wires THROUGH the studs and putting on the plate to protect against accidental drilling they WRAPPED the wire OVER THE TOP of the stud... If I could give them 0 stars I would.
