I had JP O'Brien replace my service riser after a fallen tree branch damaged it. They did a great job - very careful and conscientious. I never had to make a request more than once (to remind them), and the ladder they used even had those soft feet at the end so it didn't bang against the side of my house. I also didn't see any of the small mistakes that I find contractors often make (eg trampling something I asked them to avoid). Found JP O'Brien via Yelp. Dave responded to my inquiry about an EV charger install. We scheduled an appointment for later in the week for a free in home estimate. He came on time and he quickly assessed my garage and basement. He saw my charger and indicated that it's a plug-in which may cause some problems. He recommended a hardwire solution. Luckily my EV charger supplier was able to swap out the charger free of charge. Dave and team came on the scheduled day and installed the charger and connected it to my electrical panel. Waived inspection contingency and after closing we discovered most of the house had active knob and tube wiring, along with some BX wire spliced off of the knob/tube! Called JP Obrien and one other electrician for quotes based off top yelp reviews. Joe came out next day for knob and tube inspection and had quote available shortly after. Not only did JPO beat the competition in price, but they rearranged their schedule to start work the following week, right before Christmas, to accommodate our moving timeline. Joe and team were very communicative and we were very impressed with their work. We added requests throughout the project like adding a whole house surge protector, changing switch locations, waiting for light fixtures to be delivered, etc. They managed to rewire essentially the entire house and put very minimal holes in the walls trying to snake wires around corners. They set up the town inspection (which also went smoothly) and were also flexible on breaking up the final payment. We 100% recommend JPO Electric and plan to use them again for any future projects. If you have knob and tube wiring that needs to be replaced, do yourself a favor and get a quote from JPO. read more

I wanted to have an interlock installed in my main breaker panel so that I could hook up a generator in case I lost power. I also had a few other issues that the home inspectors pointed out: sump pump sans GFCI circuit and a dimmer switch that wasn't meant for LED lights. I called in 3 electricians to provide quotes. JP O-Brien wasn't the cheapest (but was very reasonable) but I ultimately decided to go with them because David was extremely nice and took the time to explain everything to me to make sure I understood the best path forward. David and Steve showed up on a Saturday (which they did to accommodate some work things that popped up during the week on my end preventing me from being able to meet them during the week). They did everything on the quote and also took the time to do the following free of charge: 1) Determine which breaker each of my furnaces (at least one was unlabeled) 2) Label all my breakers A/B phase so I could know which ones I could turn on while using my generator 3) Replaced the brackets holding the utility line to my house since they were destroyed 4) Looked at my thermostat wiring and explained to me how to install my smart thermostats These guys were great. Had a great experience with JP O'Brien Electric! Joe got back to me immediately and what set him and his company apart from the start was that they provide an in-person estimate to talk about your needs and review what is possible (they only do this on Saturday mornings, but still it was worth it!). Dave came out to do the estimate and provided the written estimate within 24hrs. Part of our project included some investigation to find out what certain problems were, and the hourly rate he provided was very competitive (and included TWO electricians). He also provided a flat rate for other various items needed (outlet installation, etc), which I think in the long run ended up saving me money b/c some of those outlets turned out to be a lot more involved! He and his co-electrician Steve were very communicative, kept me updated on additional requirements/needs as the project went along. It was a FULL day (Steve stayed until 7pm) and they both came back on Saturday to finish up. They did an excellent job cleaning up (especially since the majority of the work was in the kitchen) and overall I was very pleased with the outcome and the price. I highly recommend Dave and Steve!! Why is a good electrician so hard to find these days? Even if you do somehow find one, you are SHOCKED when you see the bill you receive at the end. Ok, that was my lame attempt at a joke. Massive fail on my behalf. Anyway, I am from Somerville, aka the land of multi-family homes. So, it was very much a surprise when my family, which consisted of 4 people at the time, bought a three-floor, single family home in Somerville. That was just insane and unnecessary. So, we turned it into a two family, lived in half of it, and rented out the other half. This went on for twenty years before my brother and I moved out, making my parents empty-nesters. They finally came to the decision that it was stupid for them to be paying gas and electricity for BOTH tenants when clearly, one set of tenants was using more resources than the others. They wanted to separate out the utilities and make each tenant pay their own. What's fair is fair, right? Enter JP O'Brien Electric. What I thought would be a long, drawn-out, expensive process ended up being quick, efficient, and a two-day turnaround. Joe and his helper came on a Monday to inspect the house and give an estimate. They came back on Tuesday morning and did all the work. Electricity to the house was only interrupted for about two hours, and he showed up at the house *at the time that he said he would be there.* How's that for service? On Day #3, he got the electric company to come out and sign off on the work and add the new electric meter. Boom -- DONE. We played phone-tag for a while, but Joe continued to keep calling until we were able to connect and set up an appointment -- I appreciate his good communication. When they showed up, they were on time, super nice, very efficient . . . The only thing I'd say is that I should have asked exactly what things would cost before I had them do the work. I just had a few small things that I thought I needed some help with, and in the end, the price tag was a little higher than I expected. My mistake, though . . . I thought electricians worked on an hourly fee plus the cost of any materials -- these guys had a separate price for each individual thing they did, even if they were simple, quick tasks. Maybe all electricians do this? To be honest, I haven't really needed an electrician in a long time. In any case, I will call them again in the future, but I will just make sure to know IN ADVANCE what they charge for each service that I would be asking them to do. read more
