For me, pancit is that quintessential Filipino dish that should be present in every party (if only to be left over and packed in aluminum foil pillows, to be taken home and eaten later). My favorite is Pancit Malabon, and wherelse to get the best Pancit Malabon than in the place that gave it its name. Real Pancit Malabon should have thick and fat bihon noodles that were boiled until they are almost mushy, and not as tender or al dente as regular spaghetti pasta. It should also have a variety of toppings, and the best ones should have seafood, pork, and chicken combined. I tried Dolores' Pancit Malabon when I went to the city for a writing assignment. The serving was so huge and it was really delicious. I chatted with one of the owners and they told me that the branch there has been around for a long time. . Many other places like Nanay's Pancit offer family recipes that have been handed down for generations, but Dolores is one of the more popular ones due to their generous toppings of squid, shrimp, egg, veggies and chicharon. The place has a museum-like quality because of the displayed artwork and mixed media visual art that were curated by the owners. This is where eclectic and offbeat art create an interesting backdrop for the food, which is quite filling and delicious. I ordered the kielbasa, which was spicy but not too overwhelmingly so. It was served in a small bucket with a generous helping of fries. I also tried the cornflake-crusted chicken fingers which they served with fried egg and some really tasty and butter gravy. What I love about this place is the fun vibe that the artwork lends to this funky and creative space. They have a platform that serves a stage for performance durig open mic nights. I appreciate places that do real good mac and cheese because easy as it is do, it could also be challenging to create good flavors that are not too overwhelming. What I hate in a mac and cheese is the "umay" factor, and more often than not, some restaurants over do it. Not Buvette. Buvette, which is in General Luna, is a waffle place, first and foremost, but they also serve really good mac and cheese. The waitress said that the mac and cheese is the heirloom recipe of the owner of the small meryenda place. I like the vibe of the place. It is decorated sparsely in that minimalistic industrial style, and I love the idea of putting a tablet there at the counter so that people can search for music on Spotify and play it in the cafe's speakers. I tried their Nutella and Chocolate waffle after I had some of the mac and cheese. I also had their house iced tea, which was really yummy and refreshing. But for the high price, the quality, quantity and services are seriously lacking. They also have strange extra-charges. For example if you ask the left-over food boxed they will charge you a substantial fee for that! Attending a wedding expo gave me the opportunity to listen to the sales pitch of various caterers. After a day of talking to a number of them, I was able to limit my options to a few which have value features that come at a reasonable price. One such caterer is M Catering and Fine Foods (under Michelin Cuisine and Fine Foods, Inc). In fairness, I initially thought that it belongs to the unreasonably lavish high-end bracket favored by celebrities and socialites. As a matter of fact, one of the first promo cards they handed me was a picture of Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera. Proudly, they claimed to be the caterer to the couple's so-called Royal Wedding. Subsequently, however, I discovered that in terms of value for money deals, M Catering compared favorably with the competitors. It promised amenities and decent theme styling with the absence of a multitude of additional charges that makes calculation more complex than necessary. They had just a few extra charges and they instantly showed me how to do the computation. As far as the menu is concerned, M Catering offers a wide variety of international dishes even for their lowest priced package. This offers relief from the usual run of reception menus of which most everyone is tired by now. Lastly, a word of advice to the wise bride and groom: In looking for a caterer do not simply compare the standard quoted prices but take into account the value of the product and the amenities and styling that come with the package. Most importantly, beware of rules and additional charges that the caterer may have inserted among the fine print.
