Julia's is the perfect spot to grab a snack for your afternoon walk in Adams Morgan. A no frills, quick walk up spot that has a wonderful variety of empanadas to choose from. I opted for the chorizo that had a mix of rice and beans in it, delicious. I also grabbed a bite of a curry chicken type that my friend had, just as good. It appears they have their staples in their daily items, but they switch out veggie options each week. The empanadas were definitely larger than what I'm use to, and I felt that the price was pretty good. The service is extremely fast, the employees were friendly, the food was delicious. My personal favorite is the Jamaican-- freshly prepared piping hot and loaded with beef, onions, potatoes, and curry spices. The spinach, mozzarella, and ricotta cheese one is a close second. At first, my friend and I decided to share one empanada but next thing I know, I was back at the counter ordering another one. These empanadas are STUFFED with goodies - very worth the $5 price. The second time I visited I ordered two for myself right off the bat and had no issue gobbling up every crumb. Julia's Empanadas is one of the better, affordable spots in town. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by the aromas of the fresh bakery. The crust is perfectly flakey, but still maintains the integrity of empanada well. I personally enjoyed the Chipotle Steak and Jamaican style empanada and thought both were excellent, but preferred the Chipotle Steak. The verde sauce is also a must try. There's a diverse selection of eats on that stretch of 18th St. in Adams Morgan but Julia's Empanadas are my favorite. Julia's is on the top of my list when I'm in D.C. My favorite is the "Jamaican". The empanadas are around $3 each, and while they're pretty large they're also pretty moist, the meat doesn't get dried out. Even on a hot and humid summer afternoon, I could eat those empanadas anytime of the day and it's open late in the evenings to help with the bar scene. read more

This place seems to be really popular with DC residents who, if I had to guess, never tried an authentic empanada. For starters, the empanadas weren't disgusting, but they definitely didn't live up to the hype. They tasted like something between a stale hot pocket and a microwaved calzone. However, given the price you pay, "not disgusting" doesn't cut it. The price is ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason to charge $6 per pastry. Given the $10 minimum for credit card purchases, most people forced to buy 2. Empanadas in Latin America run you between $1-1.50 in really nice restaurants. While first world inflation is a thing which could justify a slight increase in price, $6 an empanada feels like a scam, especially for such a mediocre product. If you are going to spend $12 on empanadas, you might as well give it to a Latino friend who could probably make them just as good. read more

As someone who grew up with a Salvadorean family, I know good empanadas very well, but unfortunately Julia's just isn't it. I really had high hopes for this place since everyone and their kids, wives, husbands, and mamas has been raving about this place... unfortunately, I continue to be disappointed every time I get a chance. I have tried the chicken, turkey, vegetarian, rhubarb, apple, and cherry and I can't say that I like ANY of them. I mean, where is the flavor? Does Julia not believe in flavor? After a week-long visit to Jamaica, I finally tried patties in the Kingston airport as I was leaving the country. Julia's Jamaican empanadas are not true Jamaican-style patties, but they certainly use the same flavor profiles and are just as delicious, if not more so. With beef, onion, potato and curry, it's hard not to love it. I've also tried the Chilean empanada, which I wasn't as fond of, but that's just because I only love olives in martinis. Beef, raisins, egg and onion otherwise are a delicious combo. They say each is $3.41, but with tax it comes out to $3.75 even apiece. Also, their hours vary. I went into this location and asked tonight, and here's their latest operating schedule as of April 2010: Mondays and Tuesdays until 11:30 PM, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 1:30 AM (or 2, depending), Fridays and Saturdays until 3:30 AM and Sundays until 8 PM. read more

My very first time trying the salteña empanada was after my first experience drinking sake. Hot sake. Oh and cold sake. And I believe there was some kind of Bailey's infused cocktail before that. With all that being said, when I bit into my friend saltena empanada loaded with chicken, potatoes, green peas, hard boiled egg, raisins, green olives and onions, I felt as though my stomach immediately turned into a really bad chemistry experiment. I couldn't get past a few bites before my body told me that I would have regrets. Fast forward to recent weeks, I dropped by within a respectful hour, clear headed and fully sober. Mediocre empanadas and even worse customer service. I'll start with the customer service, from the second I walked in the guy behind the counter acted like I was annoying him by walking in the door. Originally I ordered a single empanada, as the guy was ringing me up I noticed a sign on the wall that you could get a meat and fruit empanada and a soda for the price of the single empanada, so I asked the guy if I could have the deal and he got an attitude and asked me why I didn't say that to begin with. At that point I was like if it is too much trouble forget it and I'll keep my money, at that point he improved his attitude a bit but I didn't understand his issue, it wasn't like I was holding up the line as I was the only person in the place but whatever the customer service was lacking. Empanada itself was eh, I had the Jamaican beef style, dough was very dry and too flaky, meat was not very tasty and flavor was very lacking. I will admit the apple empanada I had was good, nice flavor well put together, not really worth a trip just for it though. It was initially (years ago) only a few empanada types, primarily Central American. Now it seems like the entire Western Hemisphere is represented in their menu. From Jamaican, to Chilean, to Argentine, to Salvadorean, and now guava (yum yum) empanadas, they have it. The stores are all small, few chairs, no soda drinks, just refrigerated bottles, but nonetheless their core competence is just... Empanadas. This Julia's location is relatively the same size as the DuPont location. We got there around 3pm on a Friday afternoon and I would say the savory empanadas were on the low side The good meal deal is 7.95 for a drink, savory empanada, and dessert empanada. We always opt for this deal to share together as a snack The Chilean is our go to, this time we tried the salvordoran which reminded me of a warm curry chicken pot pie all in one. Chilean is still my favorite. My go to dessert empanada is the peach guava. Flavor is unique and pair well together. This time we tried the strawberry creme which had a small bar of creme cream and strawberry jam. Pretty good. The best part of this Julia's location is the bench out front. For some reason; gut instincts, no sé, for whatever reason I never had the desire to visit Julia's. Even when I found out that they sell salteñas, I still could not muster up the energy to pay Julia's a visit. Until yesterday. I was pressed for time and it was drizzling so why not try one of my favorite foods on earth, even if it is at Julia's? I love salteñas but 9 times out of 10 I am passing on any and all empanadas. I've had countless empanadas and I have only had a few good ones. As soon as I walked in the young chap behind the counter was trying to sell me a Jamaican. No way, I used to like the patties at Negril in Silver Spring. Plus, I am not eating beef ahorita so that was an easy suggestion to jettison. I was deliberate as a man on a mission--a salteña. And what?!? It was chicken and not beef, "aww yeah." This my friends, was the worst salteña I ever had. It was shaped like a salteña but tasted like an empanada. Salteñas contain meats that have a savory, stewed taste. The shape is necessary, it is baked because the contents are so juicy. This was just some shredded chicken. Boo! Not that Ropa Vieja isn't delicious, this was really an empanada passed off as a salteña. I love Julia's Empanadas. I live about 7 minutes down the road, so coming here for a late night snack is always tempting. Usually I get whatever vegetarian special they have at the moment, and this big boy is worth every dollar of the five dollars I paid. IMO, the best part is the thick baked crust, because it complements the messy, zingy, veg (or meat) goo inside wonderfully. I recently moved from the Dupont circle area to the bottom of admo/u street. I was packing up and thinking about the different lifestyle changes I would have to make-- bus/metro lines, grocery stores,...and then it hit me. I would be losing my favorite go-to empanada place.
