It's just mid. It's just another frozen custard shop. I don't feel like it's worth the hype that people give it. Honestly, I like Culver's better- it's creamier. The location is so small and cramped, they need a bigger storefront. I got a brownie sundae and added bananas and it was nothing crazy. There was barely any bananas for the price they charged me extra. The hot fudge was not even "hot" and the brownie was nothing special. They offered a pint of coconut but when I asked if they had that flavor they said no. I wouldn't recommend unless it's the only place you're willing to drive to. read more

Best place in Crystal Lake to get ice cream. It looks like a pretty simple ice cream place, but the flavors are key. Julie Ann's has a lot to choose, including the classics as well as ones that are unique. Have to come back often because flavors rotate a lot. The prices are okay considering it's locally made and premium. A popular place when it gets hot. It's of course not only for those times. They're open all year so you can go whenever. Has more options than one can believe. There's all the various flavors and then there's all the toppings. It's about $3 for a cup. There's always a dairy free flavor on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Last time it was the Chocolate Raspberry. Really good stuff. Basically it's this chocolate sorbet with raspberries in it. They also have a crap ton of toppings. Candy, cookies, nuts, and more. There's also sundaes. Many to choose. They also have build your own sundaes. For sure it's a popular place for families. It's located in front of Crystal Lake Plaza. They're open every day and even are open yearlong. read more

We went and the line was crazy. Now, I'll admit, my wife got in the slow moving line while I went to the washroom. I got out and it was our turn to order. I looked at their menu and it is a mess. For the live of G-d, list your flavors AND THEN list toppings and options. They have these crazy names for their concoctions and you're guessing the flavors or what's in them. When you feel like you're being rushed, you feel the anxiousness of having to make up your mind. I got some peanut butter rice crispy concrete mixer or something like that with vanilla and chocolate twist gelato. The vanilla was flavorful and the chocolate was not at all. For a drizzle peanut butter sauce, all I could taste was that drizzle. And the rice crispy treats were fine but they had mini chocolate chips in them. I think I broke s tooth on them. Truthfully, I could do better or the same at Culver's and at least their custard is flavored. read more

Menu is extremely difficult to read. Smells really good when you walk in and I have to be honest the product is good. My biggest issue is the shameful workers with extreme disrespect and no regard for love, kindness, or patience. Such a crystal lake classic, and it's great! I used to come here when I was a kid back at their old location. This is actually the first time I visited this location, and while it's significantly smaller, they've got tons of outdoor seating and the custard is just as amazing as it always was. While the line was out the door, the service was so quick - I was shocked! I have a new found appreciation for this place now that I'm gluten free though. Their menu is marked clearly with gluten free and dairy free options. They even have a gluten free cone which I've never seen before! Such a nice touch to make me feel confident and safe eating here. It's so appreciated! And their containers appear to be compostable - another nice bonus! 10/10 would recommend. read more

I tried the Tie Dye Lemonade Shake at Julie Ann's and was like pleasantly surprised. It tasted similar to other lemonade/ice cream shakes I've had before but with a unique colored twist. The location was great and seemed busy. They have a beautifully designed chalkboard menu and the staff are very knowledgeable and can offer recommendations. The only reason I felt it wasn't a 5 star experience was because they seemed to be out of a lot of products, they did not offer dairy free everyday, and finally, in the image of the tie dye lemonade online it shows a compostable cup and straw but no such offerings were available. There are dozens of ice cream, frozen yogurt, bakery, and donut shops in the area... but none come close to this intimate family owned establishment. The prices seem a little high when compared to some of the local chains, but once you experience the quality of the product and the warmth of the service, you won't remember the pricing. Highly recommend going in the fall and getting the apple cider donut custard sandwich. Going to school in Wisconsin for a while and being around a ton of custard places, custard has turned to one of my favorite treats to get. Seeing Julie Ann's was local and the pictures I saw online of some of their specials, I just had to run over and try. So don't judge but I ended up getting a shake lol. My brother and I actually both ended up getting shakes. He got a Salted Nutella Crunch Shake and I got the Espresso Brownie Love Shake. Most places I've been at the espresso has been really hit or miss. It's either too much espresso or way too little. At Julie Ann's it was phenomenal. I tried some of my brothers Salted Nutella Crunch, that was some good stuff but my Espresso Brownie Love Shake was the bomb.com. My brother thought his was better but I think mine was lol. Great espresso flavor and brownies pieces in every sip. Was one of the best shakes I've had and the staff there was also extremely nice when I went. Ice cream was good. Customer service was eh... The family and I enjoy Julie Ann's ice cream and their oh so many different concoctions, but customer service is lacking and it's apparent to customers. Walked in today and only one other couple in the store eating away their ice cream. The girl at the register didn't crack a smile, a grin, nothing. Just stoic face and "Are you ready to order?" She took our order, made our ice cream sundae, and gave us our order. No "Thanks. No "Have. Nice day." Its the little things for some customers, like a simple hi or thank you, that determines if I'm going to be a repeat customer... As we were eating our ice cream, on older man came in and he to was trying to crack a smile on the girls face. Right after he paid, he did nicely say "It wouldn't hurt to smile." You can teach someone skills, but you can't teach them to have personality. Maybe she was having a bad. Maybe she was just annoyed she was being forced off her phone to actually work (she would run to the back while between customers and would be on her phone). Whatever the case... a smile sometimes goes a long way. read more
