The donuts are exceptional...always fresh, soft, and some of the best you'll find anywhere. It's one of those places that keeps our family coming back. What makes it even more special is Mike. Every time we walk in, he treats our family like we're regulars. He's genuinely kind, welcoming, and always takes the time to make our kids smile. I rarely get to Crystal Lake, so when I saw this place and its great Yelp reviews I wanted to pick up a few. They don't disappoint. The devil's food donut is delicious! But their maple long John is the best. In over 15 years living in Chicago I've never found a maple bar (called a long John here) that was enjoyable. Usually they come with bacon on them (I wish this trend would end) or they're Dunkin quality. But these ones were almost as good as my favorite source, which is in my Oregon hometown. They were nice and light; usually I find them far too dense. And the maple topping was just the right flavor. If I could do it again I'd have bought just the maple long John, even though they charge a bit extra for them. The place has the counter where you can walk up and order donuts, but there's also a bit of a diner feel in that they have a counter where you can sit and have a snack and coffee. (There may be more to their menu; I only looked at the donuts.) They also have a drive-through, which is great, but they don't list the donuts they have so if you're ordering more than a couple you may need to come in. We knew something was off the last few times we've been to Country Donuts (donut selection is sparse, taste is different, service is not great). We couldn't quite figure out what it was, until now. The original owners retired, and it's not been the same since. It doesn't matter if the now owners were former employees and they worked there for years. You know they are doing things right because they are open 24 hours a day and there are always people there when I drive by. I came to check it out this weekend at 5 pm and yet there were still tons of people in line. The prices are super reasonable, $14 for a dozen - that's amazing! Since it's fall, I got the chance to try their three different apple donuts. Just wow... They have an apple cake donut that is glazed and one that is covered with cinnamon sugar. But the apple donut that tops them all is their apple filled donut. The yeast donut itself is so fluffy and soft. While the apple filling is not too sweet and is not under-filled. Their other donuts are also quite good! Very moist and soft, not too sweet, very flavorful. I don't even like old fashioned donuts but theirs is definitely the best I've ever had. Been coming here since a kid so really disappointed when visiting family how I was treated. The lady with blonde hair working there is incredibly rude. A young man was helping us with our order and I pointed to the exact one I wanted. She literally pushed his hand out of the way and took the one I wanted for her customer. Then I had a coupon on my phone and showed it to the guy, and she butted in "that's not for our location"? All I could think was really? You can't accept my $2 coupon for the same company?
