I've gone off and on to julius for years. The first hair cut is good. generally his bob's are good and the reason i go back as thats my 'reset haircut.' I've always enjoyed his eccentricity but he's always been somebody you have to keep an eye on as he gets cutting happy. He listens than makes his own decisions. You never know which way its going to go and many times it turns out ok - or at least you've grown out enough hair where it isn't a big deal if he does whatever he does. Don't expect a spa, don't expect him not to be hurried and overwhelmed. Don't expect gentleness with his hands. Don't expect wet brush outs not to hurt. He used to be somewhat trustworthy. After 10 years of sometime visits he is now forever never. This year he's all over the place and i can't do it any more. Sorry Julius. You really hurt me and ended up costing me a LOT of money to fix cutting off all my hair. It was so short and so uncomplimentary i ended up getting extensions because i couldn't bear it. It was either that or a pixie cut. After starting with shoulder length hair! (Extensions with hair as dense as mine are expensive. That's how upset i was at your haircut. I never thought id be desperate enough. It will take 6 months to get my original hair length back. I will never trust you again. ) How did i get here? This year i came back because of the groupon. I had been using box color but he said it was too dark for me and i agreed. So we added getting color as I'm getting a little gray. That means i have to go back every six weeks for color. It was nice not having to do my own color. #1 visit: haircut - good. The color - he was careless with the color on my face & i had an inch of orange skin - that no amount of google-foo would remove. Thank god i wfh a lot. It went away after almost a week. The reddish hair color was nice but over time I decided it was too red for me. #2 i needed color again. I asked for less red, no problem. Explaining last months skin issue, I asked him for vasiiine around my face, he complied. We didn't use the heated drier. From the seat I can't see hair details that clearly, it wasn't until i got home I see the color didn't stick to my grays at all. But the worst was the cut. I had asked him to simply trim it because i was growing it out. He said sure. Suddenly i had a whole new layered haircut that is all POUF like an 80's soccer mom with very thin little ends that are flippy...All the weight was above my ears. He says 'see i kept the length'! I'm shocked. But it's all flat ironed and i can't quite see what he's done but it wasnt a trim. I have super dense thin hair with a LOT of natural wave and body. My hair can't handle that cut. It fro's. I had to buy a hair curler and instead of wash n go. I'm forced to curl it. unhappy. I start feeling like grandma . BUT - with my gut screaming it was a mistake at me - i came back like an idiot the next month because i had not used that Groupon, and it was about to expire. #3 I told him i wanted less red in it. He said brown had to have some red in it. Ok no problem. I just want it less red. So instead of brown with a little bittiest of red he gave me NO red and it was BLACK. I am super super pale skinned and not goth. My natural color is dark brown so I could't tell the color issue with wet hair and we went on to the cut. This time i needed a cut to fix the last cut. i showed him the alexa bob because my hair is very full and it was too short but in general not completely undoable. It was still down to my shoulders. He said ok. Then he proceeded to cut my back inner layer against my neck with the hair trimmer - with a large gappy blades, and gave me large cuts on the back of my neck. Like i bled which he didn't mention then. I felt an ow but didn't realize he had actually cut me until later. I thought he was going for the undercut bob he used to do so well. Nope. omg nope. He cut away ALL my length, what i had left, and gave me a straight bob that was not even ear length with no charm it it whatsoever. You know those old dark haired ladies who have those awful high bob haircuts that do nothing for them? That is what he gave me. And the whole time he was rushing (with one other person in there) and would not even talk to me or cut or shape my bangs. He shut me down any time i tried to talk to him. He just wanted me out of the door. I was speechless. left. I generally have awesome hair. It's hair that is extremely forgiving. I went home pissed but hopeful that maybe it wasn't that bad. I knew I could fix the color with color oops. The haircut was what was scaring me. My poor hair i was trying to grow out. I gave it two days but got extensions to my shoulder length before anyone else saw me. I was so embarrassed and ashamed. I still am. This was 3 weeks ago. And sad i was treated so badly. I went in and asked for a trim. Julius cut off at least two inches. Before cutting, he didn't ask me how much I wanted cut, he just went to it and did what he thought was best. I was horrified when I saw how much he'd cut. I cried most of my walk home and just feel down on my look. Julius is my newfound stylist. I floundered around in many of the well-known local salons (you can see my yelp reviews as proof) and just didn't click with any of them. One of my friends from NYC actually recommended Julius, she used to go to him over 5 years ago when she lived here. I didn't even realize that I'd passed by this place a bunch but never considered it. Julius set's up shop in the very front and all pedestrians have a great view of you getting styled. He's an institution and has had his on salon in Center City for something like 38 years. He's got skills and takes your comments and desires to heart. I just got a really good vibe off him and like going to the salon. Plus he remembered my friend who hadn't seen him in five years and told me to have her email him. How many clients has this guy had? I was definitely impressed. It helped that I got a postcard from him shortly after saying thanks and he's like to see me again. Needless to say he has and after three+ years of searching, I've found my stylist! PS He does Mike Nutter's hair (er, beard) and some other local celebs. There is a sense of chaotic whimsy. This is not a typical Rittenhouse salon. It is not flashy. It is instead beautifully eccentric. It is not sterile. Instead it is real. Unlike any other haircut experience you'll ever have. I've had Julius bookmarked for about 6 years now--I was deeply intrigued by the love/hate reviews of this man who seems to treat hair like art. However, like many others, my hair is a sort of comfort zone, so I never felt comfortable leaving my old salon for the more avant-garde.....until today. I was ready for a change. I gathered a few photos of hairstyles I liked, but with no firm idea of what I wanted for myself. We sorted through things we liked about them, stated I wanted to keep most of my length, and then Julius got to work. He does have a rougher touch than most stylists, but I didn't mind for the most part. This isn't going to be your typical relaxing grandeur salon experience--you're here to look good. He's going to make the mop on your head a piece of art! Like an artist to canvas. Take notice of his impressive collection of hair scissors... I appreciate the extra time he puts into his cuts, which to me justifies the higher price along with his decades of experience. I've never had a hair stylist cut my hair with such careful attention to detail. He made sure to check the cut while sitting up straight, while standing, etc. to make sure it looked good at every angle, and adjusting where need be. To boot, he's a genuinely warm, kind person who loves his job and is knowledgeable in many interesting topics. No small talk here. His assistant is nice, as well; the shop overall just has a good, comfortable vibe, almost as though I were with friends. I very much like how he only takes one client at a time: All focus is on you. My only concern right now is if I'll be able to style this very different cut on my own, but Julius gladly offered to have me come in to help me out, if I need. I highly recommend everyone try him at least once. You don't realize how important a good haircut is until you've gotten one. - - - *Oh, and past mayor Michael Nutter walked in after my appointment, which was an interesting little encounter to top my appointment! ETA: I've washed my hair and was astonished to find it naturally dried into a wearable style, without the assistance of a hairdryer, straightener, or even product....those of you with curly hair, will know how unbelievable that sounds. It is his tireless devotion to his customer, his passion for his job, and his positive demeanor and friendly attitude that have kept me coming back all these years. I've had basically everything done to my hair, from dying my hair and eyebrows blue and neon green to any number of cuts. After 6 months in Philly, I needed a haircut. Bad. I went to yelp and saw that Julius Scissor accepts walk-ins on Saturdays - perfect. I show up, get a cut and color (first time coloring my hair) in a weird/funky/artsy salon. Be prepared to be on display to everyone walking by on the sidewalk as you get your haircut! Julius did a great job - it's a sign of a professional if you can go in there and just have an understanding with your stylist. I gave him minimal instructions and my hair looked better than ever at the end of it. I've since gone back a second time and was equally impressed - creepy hair sculptures aren't really my thing but a kick-ass cut and color sure are! read more

Julius is just the right amount of funny, and definitely one of the most outwardly creative people in the city. I'd probably buy him lunch (once) just to hang out, but instead each year I've come here when I'm back in town, and it's like story time, improv theatre, and life coaching all for the price of one damn stylish cut. Overal, visiting Julius Scissor is a genuine cultural experience. His clientele would self-select, but I think many bad reviews are from groupon people who purchased ahead, but weren't good cultural matches. Julius is great. As a seasoned sculptor, you can understand his transition into hair. He has been at the same location for 30 years and the shop has that vintage feel. Many of Juilius' sculptures are on display to look at, and his station is very colorful. I felt well attended to-never being there before. The shampoo man was very nice and sweet, and gave a great scalp massage. I bought the kgb deal online, as it was my birthday, and typically I don't bother getting my hair done. I just wanted a trim, but I let Julius use his creative license to create a masterpiece. I have curly hair, and sometimes it is difficult for hair stylists to understand. Julius had a great understanding of my type of hair. He cut my hair both dry first and then wet to even it out. He did put a few layers in the front that I wasn't expecting, but I didn't mind too much. He also brushed my hair with a finer comb than I usually use which pulled a bit, but I have a high tolerance for pain. Overall Julius seems to be a really talented guy. His shop is totally different than most would except, and being an artist I really appreciated it. Overall I had a great experience and even found parking thanks to Julius' direction. After I was finished he even gave my some of his shine product as a gift, thanks Julius!! I do plan to go back in the future, my only warning is to remember that Julius is a sculptor, if you are looking for a high-end salon-with a perfectionist hair designer, this may not be the place for you. However, if you are open minded and want something that is different and artistic, you will love this place! read more

I debated how negative I wanted to be with this review because (a) I don't feel TOO badly about my haircut (the beautiful thing about my hair is that it always grows out to look more or less the same as usual without the need for drastic intervention, so I can always shrug off a bad cut), and (b) I know that Julius reads these reviews and it always hurts to read negativity about yourself and your business online, but ultimately the thought that I would be PISSED if I had paid full price for one of these cuts resulted in my decision to rate Julius Scissor 2 stars. Basically, the main reason why I don't feel like this business deserves at least three stars is because of the extreme social discomfort that I experienced at my appointment. Both Julius and Shay started off very friendly and kind, but unfortunately, in my opinion, during my haircut (which felt like the longest haircut ever) Shay became uncomfortably friendly. After I had said no more than three sentences to him, he said "I can tell you're a very interesting person," over, and over, and over -- at least 15 times in the course of my hour-long hair cut. He also awkwardly tried to compliment my haircut by repeatedly asking (jokingly) if I was sure that I wanted to stay with my significant other. Now, I get that some hairstylists like to talk to you, but the awkward fake-flirting just made me really uncomfortable. He laid it on so thick that I just wanted to get out of there instead of expressing dissatisfaction with my haircut, which would have prolonged an already painful experience. I'm sorry to say that the cut itself was only marginally better than the last time I had my hair cut in Chinatown, in that sketchy $10 place on Race Street. It sadly wasn't even as good as my hometown hair salon, where I can get a wash and cut for $13 + tip . I can't imagine how mad I would have been if I had paid full price. I went to Julius for a few years when I lived in Philadelphia a while ago. I actually only came to this page because I was curious to see if he was still in business and was shocked to see that he is. I never felt that I could leave an honest review about my experience with him, but now that I live across the country, I feel safe to do so. During the time that I went to Julius, his attitude toward me became increasingly flirtatious. Eventually it became completely inappropriate and I had to stop going to him. Aside from that, I look back on photos of the hair styles I had from him and they are absolutely atrocious and poorly executed--especially the color. I can't believe I walked around like that! His prices are at the very upper end of what you pay for hair in Philly, but what you get is an uncomfortable experience in dingy salon and a sub-par style. read more

This is my first review I've ever written but after the horrible customer service I received at Julius I felt that people should be warned. I bought a groupon for $17 for mani and pedi. I called Julius to book an appointment but they said their nail spa is separate from the hair salon and gave me another number to call. The lady I called on the separate number was not only not willing to accommodate me and give me an appointment but was shockingly rude. She seemed so annoyed that I even called and apparently was booked for two weeks and the coming weekend some conference was taking place so they had to close (that made no sense). Also just initially getting in touch with her took about 4 days. This is actually ridiculous, I called today one last time and of course they aren't taking anymore appointments. She didn't bother to tell me other available days and hung up on my face (second time she did this). Most unprofessional business Ive come across. The absolute WORST experience ever. I purchased a wash, cut, blow dry, and style off of dealfind back in September. The coupon said for $27 (normally $75) I would get all of those mentioned by Shay, Julius' assistant. By the time I went to book an appointment for my sister and I (we each bought one), Shay was no longer an employee there. Julius informed me that he would be taking care of us, and because of that he would need to charge about $10 to $15 more per person. When I didn't respond to this, he asked me if that was ok. I said if that was the case, then I would just take a refund because I already paid for the services listed at the price required. Julius said that he would just note down that we were not to be charged extra, as if he were doing me a favor. When my sister and I arrived for our appointment, we were the only ones in the salon other that Julius and his receptionist. Julius asked if we had brought pictures of the cut we wanted. I first made it a point to stress I didn't want anything taken off the length. I showed him a picture of the bangs I wanted. He looked it at for 2 seconds and said "Got it memorized!" While my hair was still dry, he sat me in the chair (which, by the way, is directly in front of the window, allowing all passerbys to see you). He held the scissors sideways and started pulling them through my hair, causing CLUMPS of my hair to fall on the floor. At this point I noticed all of the weird sculptures and paintings on the walls. There are portraits and life sized sculptures of people made completely out of human hair. Julius was very rough while doing the "initial cutting" of my dry hair. It literally felt as if he were pulling my hair instead of cutting it. Finally, after cutting already about 2 inches off of my hair, he sent me back to get washed. After the washing, I came back to the same chair at which point the receptionist started picking up my sister and I's hair and putting it in a plastic baggy. She asked Julius if he wanted to keep it. I can only assume that I will be apart of the next weird sculpture he makes. After cutting off about another inch (to hair which the length was not to be touched AT ALL), Julius said "I'm not going to cut your hair the way you asked because I think it will look better this way." Impossible at this point to stop the cut, I had to sit there for another 45 min while he blew dry and "styled" my hair. My hair was HUGE, and the end product looked very much like I was straight out of the 70s. Then he took my picture to hang on his wall. My sister had the same experience. We both walked out of the saloon in tears. Needless to say, I wouldn't go back, even if I stumbled upon a FREE coupon. I'm not the type who is extremely picky with my hair, so the fact that I rated this experience so negatively really says a lot. read more

I usually don't like to write negative reviews, but I thought I had to warn people on that one. - Salon does not look very clean, there are hair (from others) on the table, floras, etc.... - They are nice, but the "highlights"I received consisted of semi permanent color - which I never agreed to but was told of once the haircut was over... - Haircut is possibility the WORST haircut I have received in my entire life. I told them I hated it, and I was told I just had to "live with it" and that I would love it. It was NOT what I asked for, and they refused to fix it... Supposedly there was not enough time left to make any changes.... So I waited 1 day to see... well, I STILL hate it, and now I will have to pay to go to another salon to fix what they did... Walking into a new salon scares me because no one can really handle my hair. But walking there today and seeing what he can do he does amazing work. I got a fabulous deal thru buywithme so i called b/f buying it. I spoke directly to Julius. I asked him what his hair philospohy was & he said I cut a woman's hair according to what she wants & her lifestyle. I was sold right there. I made a saturday appt. which was convient due to my 9-5 work schedule. The salon is funky in a good way. Julius' art work is displayed & alot of it is made out of hair-it's great & appropriate decor. I told Julius what I wanted which was a major change, I went from hair 5 inches past my shoulders that was layered to a short runway bob with tons of personality a little longer in the front & slightly shorter in the back.He took his time cutting my hair which was a 1st ever for me, he even dried the front of my hair b/f cutting it. Then made sure it was just perfect b/f putting the scissors down. My boyfriend was with me & watched ever step of the transformation. (he was fascinated by the technique) I left the salon a new woman. My hair looked so much healthier & up to date. I kept looking in store fronts at my new hair as we walked in the city to get food afterwards. Julius is an ARTIST in more than one sense. I just make my next hair appt. with him for next Sat. can't wait. I more than recommend him & his salon. My boyfriend says this is best cut ever that I found a gem. I was really surprised to see so many negative reviews on here. I had a great experience here on all fronts: The decor- quirky, bright, and inviting, with pictures of happy customers and Julius' art made with hair clippings hanging on the walls. He does do your hair in the front window, but it's not like the place is in front of Rittenhouse with tons of walk-by traffic. I saw maybe ten people walk by on the week day I was there. And there's so much stuff posted in/near the window it's not like you're on full display like an animal at the zoo, like some of the reviews made it sound. Julius himself was very sweet. He clearly loves what he does and explained what he was doing the whole time (and was very patient with his apprentice as well). He made conversation that extended beyond small talk. Not only that, but I was there with an elderly woman I help take care of who was getting her hair done for her birthday that weekend, which she invited him to. I'm sure he has places he'd rather be than an 80 year old (this was my first time there, but she's been there before...still it's not like they're great friends or anything), but he showed up! Despite not knowing anyone, he was the life of the party and I thought it spoke volumes about how he values his customers. And the haircut itself was beautiful. I hate my hair. It is thick and frizzy and despite always wanting something bordering on a flapper-esque bob, I've stopped asking for it when I get my hair cut because the stylist never gets it right. So, I didn't even ask for a bob or bangs specifically. I let him decide after he asked me questions about my lifestyle, activities I do, etc. and really nailed it. Even two months later it's really grown out beautifully.
