I've been getting my haircut by John for well over a decade, and I can't remember ever leaving unsatisfied. In addition to always getting a good cut, John is a great man and I always have a nice conversation with him. Everyone at the establishment is always super kind as well. Joseph Anthony's is also located at a very bustling corner of Penn's campus, so there's always good food to grab nearby, if you're stopping in around a meal time. The price is surprisingly high, with the customer service surprisingly poor. After cutting, my hair was all over my body. I want to wash my head at the store so that my hair would not fall into my food when I eat at Commons, but they refused and demanded me to go back and take a shower instead. The man who cut my hair only knew how to make a head look like a sphere. I told him that I don't want my head to look round, and he asked me: "rectangle?" ????????????? Do you only know two shapes? Plus rectangle is 2 dimensional, what do you even mean by cutting my hair to look like a rectangle? ????????? Don't go, you should never waste your money here at the cost of your look. read more

I do not get my hair done here but I get my eyebrows threaded here by the lovely Mameta. She is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. She goes above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and make my brows look so good. For my birthday, I got the most wonderful facial. My skin has never glowed so beautifully. Mameta is so sweet that she came in on her day off to let me experience the facial on my birthday. It's been hit or miss with the walk-ins. The men's haircuts are $23. Here are some highlights of several haircuts I've had here: 1. The stylist left my haircut halfway and went to go pay for her parking. 2. I once waited 5 minutes in waiting area for a walk-in, when several of the other stylists were busy. Little did I know, there was a stylist sitting next to me reading a magazine and asked me whether I wanted a haircut once she noticed me. This is a decent place, I'm still looking for a cheaper barber out here in University City. read more

I will never go back here... I made an appointment a week in advance and when I showed up they were like ...the guy you made an appointment with doesn't speak english well so he didnt put you down. And he was the only one working that day. Then the manicurist squeezed me in, which I totally appreciate, but she didnt let my nails dry between coats so they never set correctly. Walking in, I asked my barber for a 4 on top and a 1 on the sides, maybe a little longer in the front so I can sweep it to the side. He gave me a 1 across my entire head. He himself is bald, maybe he honestly doesn't know what lengths are, but this was the worst haircut I've had since a friend of a friend gave me a free one Freshman year. Seriously, my girlfriend was with me at the time and cried from the before and after, probably considered breaking up with me. I usually don't wear hats. I became a hat guy for a month. It's just getting back to a good length 2 months later, but I'll have to get it trimmed. He didn't even cut it short in a way that it would grow out well. This place is very inconsistent. If you're lucky, you can get someone who actually listens to what you want. I've had my whole head shaved off despite me telling them I don't want it too short and I ended up with a crew cut that took months for my hair to grow back. Try other salons if you need a specific cut/look. Otherwise, they will just shave off your whole head and call it good!! read more

The last time I go to this barber. Showed a clear picture of what I wanted and the lady completely botched it. This is one of the worst haircuts I've received. Mark does an excellent job and is a master of his craft. He understands exactly what I want (without me having to spend too much word and time) and he does his job dexterously. One of my Top 10 Worst Haircuts Ever. I've had really bad luck with Philly barbers. They just can't cut hair. This guy--I walk in, sit down. He pulls out the buzzer. Now, I have some very straight hair, that can NOT be cut entirely with a buzzer. I know this because I've had so many bad experiences, and few good ones. I told him I want it short, but not too short. I asked him if he was only going to use the buzzer, and he said "No." Then, guess what?! A second later, he takes the buzzer and shaves almost all my hair off. Sure it was a good length, but now I have nothing but a fucking buzz cut, and it looks almost like an afro! I looked like a fucking idiot! I asked why he used the buzzer, and he said "If I used the shears, we'd be here till 7 o'clock. There's no way you can cut the amount of hair you had evenly with just shears." False. My barber back home uses shears when I have long hair, and does it well. Even if I WAS there till 7, wouldn't it be worth it? What would you rather do: give quality haircuts, or give shitty ones, rob people, and then kick them out the door? Good things take time, idiot. This place sucked. Don't give them business. Ever. read more

Got a haircut today, which is like the slowest time for hair salon with schools and universities closed but I don't know what kind of hurry was Mark in, that he wanted to finish everything and grab my money asap. I was the only one in the salon as I got it early in the morning but that didn't stop Mark from making me wait for 10 mins and rush through the hair cut. Mark is the reason this shop is gonna shut down one day. I am not sure about other hair stylists but on a scale of 1-10, Mark is a -100 as a stylist. He doesn't know anything about his job. Giving a pair of clippers in his hand is like giving child a toy to play with. Gave me a very bad haircut as you might have understood by now. I told him to cut on the top with pair of scissors but he insisted that clippers would be better and ended up ruining my hair. He didn't shape anything and didn't even have the courtesy to ask about a head wash which by the way is included in the normal hair cut price. The water he washed with was too cold and didn't bother to put enough shampoo to wash my hair. After all this and telling him that I didn't like it, he still had the audacity to ask me for a tip and just out of courtesy I put in couple of bucks to which he grabbed the two bucks out of register right away and put it in his pocket even before he run my card. Overall a very bad experience and can't emphasize enough that you should not visit this place, even once. read more

I saw a sign for a $30 Brazilian so I had to call. Unfortunately, the person who answered the phone didn't seem to know how to answer my various questions about the wax, pricing-- nothing complicated. After guessing about my questions she gave the phone to who I assume was the waxer. I went to the salon the day of the appointment 5 minutes early and I was only greeted by a stylist who only said 'Hi' I was a bit confused as to who I should talk to because the owner (?) guy at the desk was ducked down and not visible because he was watching the Grammy recap performances. I went up to him and said I have an appointment. Without asking me my name told me to have a seat. Later someone verified who I was but I still waited 20 minutes after my appointment time before I was called back. The whole time the Grammys replay was on and I listened to the owner and stylists talk loudly about who they liked/disliked and who did well.. Once I walked back to the room and I stood outside while the laying paper was changed and room was prepped. And just like a previous reviewer mentioned, that the waxer (yes, waxer not esthetician-- she has a Waxing Techniques Certificate on the wall) really doesn't leave to allow you undress in private. I was also instructed to place my clothes on a "hamper" but it was a plastic trash can that they use as a hamper that they purchased at WalMart (I don't know why that part stuck with me). Alright now for the waxing-- I am not one for small talk so I wasn't mad about the silence but the waxer didn't say anything to me at all. Not even "is this your first wax" or "are you going to take everything off." It was eerie and made the flaws of her certified waxing techniques even harder to swallow. After every strip she whispered "got it!" to herself. Needless to say, it made me extremely uneasy. After about 20 minutes she said she wanted me to feel around for hair. Why would I feel for hair? Aren't you looking at it? Let me just tell you no one could have overlooked the amount of hair she didn't take off. She even said "yea the left side right." I literally pointed out places that I needed her to wax. It was ridiculous, well a bit sad really. I do like a deal, but it simply is not worth it. With someone as clueless as her-- I believe it was Maria (she didn't introduce herself)--doing your waxing you have to start wondering about cleanliness, double dipping, etc. All in all, poor customer service, scary place, and scary waxing. read more

My first time coming here, I loved the experience. I had my hair cut short (a bob) and dyed for the first time ever. I expected to hate it because it was such a drastic change from long black hair, but it looked great. I have a lot of hair, and when it was first cut and styled, it was way too poofy for that length. The hairdresser re-layered and re-styled it for me without me asking. I went back a couple times hoping for a similar experience. The second time I had my hair cut, it didn't look any better than if I just did it myself. I made an appointment, but my time ran into another client's slot (he was a regular). Once that happened, it seemed like the hairdresser just wanted to finish and get me out. The third time, I just wanted bangs cut. The woman that was available gave me an attitude when I said I wanted just bangs, acting as if it was a waste of her time. After the 3 minutes it took her, I asked for a more gradual transition between the hair and bangs. She said she couldn't cut anymore because it'd constitute as a "haircut" instead of just bangs. Okay.. That was my last time going there. I really wanted to like this place, but I gave it enough chances. read more

I went here on a midday during the week for a "quick" mani/pedi. Not sure I've ever felt so uneasy about having someone else do my nails before. I went with a friend of mine. We called before we left to make a reservation for 2 people getting mani/pedi's; they never mentioned that they only have ONE nail technician, one pedicure chair, and one table for manicures, so it was going to take FOREVER (forever = 2 hours). She switched back and forth between my friend and I at her little nail station, in the back corner of the salon. Never did I see her clean any of her tools between the two of us, nor did I see her clean them before we started. They were all stored in some gross coffee mug. *Bleh* She didn't pay any attention to the water in the foot bath, so don't leave your purse anywhere near the chair, or it will certainly get drenched. There was more than one time during my pedicure where she accidentally filed at my skin. I reacted by jumping/flinching back, and the lady had the audacity to flinch as well and look at me like, "how dare you interrupt me!". Geez!! When we walked away, there was polish on our skin, and she didn't get anywhere close to the edge of the nail, so it looked quasi-ridiculous. It also didn't last anywhere near as long as a regular (decent) manicure. If I ever went back to the salon for a haircut, I'd wear gloves & boots so that woman doesn't get anywhere near me again!!! read more

First of all, I have never gotten a hair cut there before so I cannot say for all. But I did buy a tanning package there for a month before my trip to Mexico. And I can tell you that you could stand in their tanning booth for 8 hours and not get a tan. They were very basic standing booths, though the package was $40 a month. The booths were always dirty and I was disgusted to stand in it barefoot. The staff were very lazy. They were either watching something, reading magazines or chatting. No one was really cleaning up the floor (full of hair! GROSS.) or even cleaning the tanning booths. Not to mention the terrible service. Never going back. read more

Walked in, NO WAIT TIME. Honestly I was completely suprised. I thought I would have to walk around in this terribly hot weather but I just walked into beautiful cold AC, and one of the owners, gave me this pretty legit cut in only 15 minutes. I just thought it was really fair because the price was pretty cheap less than $20 with tip and his precision with scissors is insanity. I'm unsure how you can be THAT PRECISE. The texture is awesome. Regardless its only been a week and I have to go back really soon lol. I have been telling many of my friends to come here, my girlfriend went yesterday and she absolutely loves her new stylist. Will definitely return, no doubt as good as it gets. read more

I've been going here since about 2008, but I've only ever had my hair cut by John, and so I can't speak to any other aspects of the place. However, John is hands-down the best barber I've ever gone to. I'm going bald, and I've had really bad experiences in the past with stylists - usually the more expensive the stylist, the worse they are about this - who really, really don't seem to know what to do with balding men. I'm convinced it's a skill all its own, and other balding guys I know have similar stories. The style I like is short and simple, but I guess it's deceptively simple, because I've had people really butcher it. In the many times I've been here, John has never, not once, given me a bad haircut. I leave feeling better and looking better, every time. Really, what else is there to say? read more

These guys are the best. I grew up in the neighborhood and have been coming here since I can remember. They've been in the same spot for about 20 years and they know what they're doing. As a professional athlete (MLS) I lived in New York, where all the trendiest hair salons are and these guys do it just as well and in half the time. I place a lot of importance in my haircut and I only trust a handful of places - Joseph Anthony's is one of them. I cannot recommend them enough. Although the haircut was not to my liking, the customer service was top-notch. When I asked for a refund, I was granted one politely and quickly, without any hassle at all. I first got my hair done here when I was a student at Penn and honestly, I haven't found a better hairstylist that gives a better cut and color than Dana for the price. Also, for the guys, the barbers are quick and experienced. Just know what you want before you go. I've seen more good haircuts than bad come out of that place. read more

Always come here to get my haircuts on campus! Prices are similar to all the other places on Penn's campus. I never make appointments and always walk in. I'm always seen within 10 mins of coming in. I don't get my hair cut by the same person every time, but I always like what they do! All of the hair dressers are very friendly and are very quick as well! I have to echo the other poor reviews on here. This is the worst haircut that I can ever recall getting, and I have had a lot of cheap haircuts down the years. The guy cut way more hair off than I asked, it was cut unevenly (there is a tuft of hair sticking out on the side of my head), he took a five minute break to chat with his supply guy when he walked in, he cut a patch out of my beard, and when he washed my hair he didn't rinse it properly (there was shampoo still in my hair that I tried to wipe out with the cloth). After our guys discovered this place (Despite it being 4 blocks away) we realized it had to be fate. We also realized there was no competition to this place, and there never will be. As a large men's organization we consistently come here and the owner and staff never fails to accommodate any of our guys haircut needs. The owner- a very generous man- is also very eager to help donate to philanthropies via auctioning off of gift cards etc at our consistent events. (Recent charities include The Boys and Girls Club of America and Prostate Cancer). Update on my previous review: I stopped going to JA because each time I came to get my pixie trimmed, the cut got shorter and shorter, even though I asked for only a tiny bit off. I did stop by recently for a trim as I'm growing out my hair and am ready for a bob. The cut was good, but I will stick with Talking Headz for now. read more

honestly the worst salon experience I've had in a very long time. Not only were the hair stylists rude, but they also overcharged me because of my "thick" hair. They charged me $55 for a blowout that took 20 mins and usually costs $20 at better salons and didn't even do a very good job. She complained about my hair the whole time and mouthed words to the women doing hair next to me. I also go my lip waxed and they burned a part of my lip- it was scabby for a couple days. if I could give zero starts, I would. I went in for a simple manicure and an eyebrow wax. I sat through an hour and a half of her grunting and cursing. disregarding her lack of professionalism, my nails are partially painted and there is wax on my eyelids. I didn't realize that I grew hair on my eyelids, and now, I cannot blink without them getting stuck together (I'm serious). (my eyebrows are also not shaped which was the least that she could do with all that wax.) my nails are another story. Stopped in for a brazilian after noticing the $25 special...I discovered (at checkout) that it is only $25 if you pay for two waxes at once. They could be clearer about their pricing but I digress. The aesthetician called me back into the room and then when I asked if she was planning to stay in the room while I got undressed she said "uh, YEAH!" and made it seem as though if she didn't there was a chance something terrible might happen if she didn't. Sure, it's semi-ridiculous to be uncomfortable about having another person in the room for a disrobing when I'm about to get a brazilian, however, it just felt plain ol' weird. Especially since she didn't actually turn around...bizarre. Now, I went in expecting no-frills, and no-frills is what I got. Probably the funniest part of the experience was her instructing me to "hop on" to the table, but then saying "don't worry, I'll hold the table stead." At first I was horrified...was this woman calling me fat?!?! Nope, it's b/c the table is probably 4 different tv trays taped together with a cushion on top so the thing wobbles like crazy when you get on. It all happened relatively quickly and the end result is good. If you're looking for an inexpensive place then this is a decent bet; much better than the service (and quality) I received from International Salon at 17th and Sansom for the same price (if you buy two). One thing to note, when the door to this little area opens, whomever is sitting at the break table OR the dryer there would have full view of the room, so just be prepared in case your waxer decides to fling the door open to leave like mine did. My hair dresser was really nice and she made me feel very comfortable. I didn't feel rushed out like I usually do in most salons. My hair turned out great, exactly what I wanted. I've had my hair cut here probably 6 or 7 times and have only been less than satisfied once, and on that occasion they fixed it the very next day with no problems what so ever. The barbers are very courteous and professional and always get the job done quickly while consistently delivering a great haircut, which I always appreciate. I think the price ($20 for a regular men's haircut) is pretty reasonable for the area, and the price definitely fits the quality of the cut well. My only experience with one of the hair stylists was good, nothing special, but still easily worth the money. She was very personable and really had a knack for making me feel comfortable (which is a rarity since I am EXTREMELY socially awkward). I can't speak for how they are with their female clientele, or with styling (I just brush it, nothing fancy here), but for a regular men's cut they are definitely worth visiting. Never have I had to make an appointment (I try and go during my lunch break on weekdays) but I have heard that they can get quite busy at times so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to call ahead before you stop in. read more

**ATTN: the only reason it's not 5 stars, the price (personally) i am a college grad and can't afford a hair cut every month or 2.. plus i like my hair long.. long story short (no pun intended) if this place were not $40 a hair cut i would be here every time i got a split end. i wanted bangs, first time since i was like 6 years old. i went in nervous, the lady took me in as a walk in and was very nice helping me get over my fear of bangs since my hair is curly and thick. i got a hair cut, with layers and blown straight, got bangs (that i LOVED!!!) in 30 minutes... normally people can't straighten my hair that quickly but this lady was AMAZING!!! next time i need a good hair cut, i will go here! read more
