do not buy from the online store. I placed an order 5 weeks ago. only one of the items had an out of stock message and lead time. they contacted me and told me it would take 4 weeks. After the 4 weeks were up I contacted them and have been ghosted ever since. No refund, no communication, nothing. Very unprofessional, honestly thought the website was a scam but apparently is legit. i dont know anything about the physical store but whoever runs the e-store sucks!!! read more

Just Shades is a marvelous store on East 59th Street dotted with antique stores. I wanted a small shade for my treasured lamp of a bunny rabbit reading a book. I remembered having bought a pretty red lampshade a few years ago in Soho which was their home till five years ago. This store has a wide range of shades and lamps in all price ranges. I found two lovely small lamp shades in pink and turquoise which were on sale for $10 a piece. Just Shades keeps good records as they had my account on file. I cannot wait to return for another colorful five. read more

The horror of pulling out a vintage lamp from the box and it's badly damaged shade! The woes of online shopping... I began my quest to get shades re-made for my 1970s Maison Jansen lamps which was not easy. I started local in St Louis, MO to no avail. I searched all the "custom shade makers" online to no avail. They could not match the shape or the gold liner or the dimensions. I wanted an exact replica of the original and was not settling for less. A friend asked their interior designer friend who asked her friend and got back to me - Just Shades in NYC. The process was relatively easy. Turn around time was about 8 weeks. I was surprised to hear when they "got the shades in" meaning they are not made there. Makes me wonder who actually makes them and how I could have cut out the middle man. The cost, oh the COST! Custom shades are obviously not cheap. They're not even expensive. They're exhorbent. Mine are not silk or leather or any fine material. They're big, I guess, but not huge. Each one was $450 or so. Adding soutache to the edges: $125/each!!! Seriously. (I skipped the soutache and am adding it myself). Be prepared to pay UP if you want custom shades but the end result is gorgeous. read more

Once again Just Shades saves the day! We have lamps we bought years ago from an antique shop - great lamps but we always knew the shades were "not quite right". We thought of buying new lamps but I decided I loved the lamps and we happened to be visiting family that weekend in Manhattan. Bingo! Through the tunnel and over to 57th street. Less than 30 minutes later we left the shop with 2 new shades & harps! Love the lamps more than ever with the "correct shades"! We purchased shades at Just Shades years ago in its earlier location. We needed a pair of lamp shades and there was really only one place I wanted to visit. In the past we always brought along the lamp, and working in the shop are 'mavens' who have seen everything. We arrived, and within a few minutes we tried a few different shades & harps, we are so happy with the decision, and they look amazing in our place. The right shades can really elevate the space overall. We did not want to settle for something that was just OK, we wanted something that would compliment our home. Back in October I was on the hunt for a special type of light bulb in the lighting district on Bowery, and happened to pass by this shop and remembered I also needed a lampshade. They've since moved uptown but I still wanted to leave them some love! I have an old second hand lamp, the kind where the lampshade clips onto the bulb, and the base is very small. I'm also picky about the style and color of shade for it, so it hasn't been easy to find a replacement for the disintegrating shade that came with it so long ago. I came in not expecting to find what I was looking for but I did! The owner of the shop was so friendly and helpful, he worked with me to find just the right match while we joked and bantered. I was having a Halloween party and wanted a shade that would work with a red bulb, and the lamp looked perfectly creepy thanks to his help! While walking back home from the upper east side i notice a cool shop that sells lamp shades in all shapes , sizes , colors and styles and its time to upgrade my lamp shades especially the ones that are falling apart or look outdated. The location is on 59th st off 3rd Ave and place is long and narrow but all the shades are displayed and organized in plain simple view which made my picking of three shades a quick task. I spent about 250 bucks including hardware as the original screws and turn bolts are not a fit for the new shades and they are old and rusty . My cuz actually purchased a retro type lamp /shade combo which looks like it belongs in the 1970s period and the blueish greenish mesh colors really makes it standout in his den. Not cheap shades but the quality will last make them last much longer then the kmart or target ones . read more

But the woman who helped us was so apathetic, bored, irritated at having to get up from her seat, and downright hostile that we told her not to bother, we'd order online. If you're looking for a specific lamp shade, this is a great place to go. Just Shades looks like it's been here a long time, and as advertised, there is a massive amount of lamp shades here. If you need a particular size, color/pattern, or really anything specific, odds are they will have it here. The one time I went it was because I needed a small shade and I could find none at any home decor stores in the city. In my experience the service was great, as a nice younger girl helped me find the right size/color in a short amount of time. I got it, it fit perfectly, and I am generally satisfied with the purchase. Why only 3 stars? Prices are pretty obscene here. I know rents in this area aren't cheap but damn, $30+ for the small shade I got? Sure it was what I needed, but that's like 2-3x what it should've been. As others have noted, the return policy is also pretty lousy. You should be able to return an undamaged, unopened shade no questions asked if you change your mind. There is no logic anyone can come up with to explain why the return would be limited to store credit; to me that makes the place just look cheap, and at these prices it's laughable. read more

Who would've thought shopping in such a specialized store could be so much fun? The ladies behind the counter were extremely knowledgeable and helpful! To echo other reviewers, excellent quality shades, perhaps a bit pricier than I'd hoped but of the best possible quality, so no regrets here. TIP: be sure to explore their sales section where you can find a smaller selection of "damaged" shades for incredibly discounted prices; but most are in pretty decent shape, with only minor flaws that only a well-trained eye will see. read more

Ok, so my first review is going to be about something pretty exciting --- lampshades. I found this amazing lamp at a flea market and needed a shade for it. Based on a recommendation, I visited Just Shades over on Spring Street. They have an amazing selection and a super helpful staff. They will help you find the right shade that suits your lamp or decor. Don't hesitate to bring in your lamp too, it's easier and saves the trek back to return. And speaking of returns, they only issue a store credit or an exchange. Check them out. read more

I have started a Yelp account just to write a review for this place. I am LIVID! All the half-way decent lampshades start at like $75. I settled for a PAPER lampshade for $35 which subsequently curled and fell apart after TWO Weeks. I took it back to the store where Mark (I think the owner) said that I had destroyed the lampshade myself! He accused me of pouring acid or steaming his crappy paper lampshade! I told him that I did no such thing. He refused to take back his awful/overpriced piece of paper. AVOID JUST SHADES! DO NOT GO TO THIS STORE. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, OVER-PRICED AND RUDE STAFF and worst of all CRAPPY PRODUCTS. read more

I have walked by this shop for many years before i finally, after looking at all the "price savvy" shades, walked in. I was blown away by the staff first than the selection. They have numerous shapes and sizes. The staff were wonderfully helpful without the hard sell. I thought i knew what i wanted until i saw their selections. JUST SHADES is really not to be believed! If you've ever been looking for a lamp shade, you will appreciate the knowledge and expertise these people have. They have every conceivable size, shape, color, fabric, and style lamp shade you can imagine and the woman actually photographed each one and sent me the pictures. She first asked for the picture of my lamp so she could choose the correct size shade. They are total perfectionists. Not all the shades are 'pricey.' They are very reasonably priced in my opinion. After receiving 4 deliveries of damaged lamp shades from one of the "big box stores", I discovered Just Shades. They had exactly what I wanted in stock and with one phone call, I had 4 new shades in about 2 days. And most importantly, they knew how to pack shades so that they arrived in perfect condition. This is the best resource for shades in New York City (and I have shopped around). There is a wide variety to choose from, and the sales staff are very helpful. The staff knows a "good fit" for a lamp, so be sure to involve them in the decision making. In fact, it is highly recommended that you bring in your lamp for the best direction and advice. Good lamp shades are pricey, so go in knowing that. Only thing I would suggest to them: please stock more shades; special orders take a long time to be delivered. read more

This Soho store is jam-packed with all kinds of options for shades. I had a really unusual lamp base and I wanted a special shade to showcase the marble base. The staff at this store were very friendly and knowledgeable. I went 4 times, and i met just about everyone! John was particularly helpful and he had fabulous taste and great suggestions for taking a "nice" lamp to something that looks really chic by adding a stunning finial. My advice is to take your lamp base with you so you can take advantage of their selection of sizes, colors and materials. That way, there are no surprises when you get it home. The people behind the counter range from disinterested to comatose--on a good day. The best way to use this store is as a showroom. Show up, find what you like, and then go on line and buy it from a site that's reputable and avoid dealing with these strange characters out of a Dickens novel. read more
