I made a special trip into Manhattan just to check out EF. So there is no showroom, the whole place looks like the loading dock of Macy's in 1950. I walk in and the owner notices me and says to wait a few minutes until someone can help me. A guy comes out and tries to help, the owner shoos him away and tells him to finish moving new stock into the back. I don't mind waiting, but more stock keeps flowing in from a truck, the owner stands right next to me doing paperwork, never asking even what the nature of my visit is. He knows I'm just a worthless walk-in and treats me as such. After about five more minutes of this, I just give up. If you want all dramas in buying a futon, come check in this place b/c they'll give you all with some headaches. I purchased a futon + a mattress + a cover from this place. I was somehow rushed to buy either couch or a sofa bed at a new place I recently moved in. My wife and I walked in this place on a Sunday. Typical 'retail' tactics - floor units lure you with fake smile, fake patience saying 'oh, sure! take your time!'. One sales guy'd stick with you, you make a decision, he'll give you an itemized receipt, then you pay at cash register (where you see a guy with a reading glasses and a thick accent) I knew exactly what I wanted already, so I started asking price over a specific futon then the sales guy would NEVER give me clear segments of price. He'd say '...with that mattress, you pay $50 more.' so what's the base price? how much is the frame? We picked one anyway and the guy all of a sudden offered a 'discount', well, that's nice, I thought. I gave them my address, preferred delivery timeline, then paid with my c.c. Since it was sunday, they said the delivery will be made on Monday, fine. On Monday, the delivery guy (nice guy) buzzed in with unassembled frames and mattress. He started assembling parts in living room. And what I found was: 1. They sent a wrong, cheaper mattress. - I was lucky to figure this out BEFORE the guy tears out the plastic bag. I asked him to leave as it is. On the itemized receipt (BTW, they hand-write everything) there was serial# and name and they didn't match with the seal on the plastic bag of the mattress. 2. They sent me a wrong cover, but similar color. - laughable. One I picked at the store was really dark green (hunter green?) and they sent me lighter green one and zipped cover was open. I took it out to see if it's used for display but it showed all folded lines and such so I 'accepted' it. I went to their website and spent some time to find & compare the price (thank god, they have website!) The one I ordered was #612 double-foam 12 inch, but they sent me #608 single-foam 8 inch. I rarely leave reviews at Yelp, but here's actual reasons that made me write a detailed review to warn future customers: THEY MADE ME CALL THEM MULTIPLE TIMES keep denying their 'mistake' (well, is it?) blaming the delivery guy that he picked the wrong one, and never said sorry to me. Around 10am, I made my 1st call. The cash register guy picked it up. I said 'you sent me a wrong mattress.' He said 'noooooooo....' ,'Um...I didn't even give you details yet and you say no?' And he started blaming everyone but him even lying that he should wait until his 'supervisor' shows up. -- he's the supervisor. Of course I didn't expect his call back so I called the store many times and last time I called, someone else picked up, I asked to talked to manager, then the register guy picked up and said 'ok. we'll collecting the wrong mattress tonight, same time range, ok?' then hung up. He didn't even ask me who i was, what business i needed to address. Couple of tips - or things that I learn from this unpleasant experience: 1. NEVER pay in cash. In worst case scenario, you can at least file a dispute via your credit card company. 2. ALWAYS ASK THEIR NAMES. Don't be shy. Just ask and write them down. Floor unit, delivery man, register guy who seems to be a manager/owner 3. BROWSER THEIR SITE IN PRIOR TO STORE VISIT. Check the price and serial#, name of items before you check in. 4. Ask ITEMIZED RECEIPT. Even if you did, they wouldnt' write down prices per each item. This is why you need to check the price online first. 5. Upon delivery, confirm the items first. Ask delivery man(likely he's assemply guy, too) to give you some moment to check out the items first. After the box and seal is broken, it'll be much harder to make any swap if they sent you wrong ones. 6. At best, don't bother to check in this place. Go elsewhere. read more

Updated: overall I'm still happy with the cushions. They e sagged a wee bit but I don't think that's unusual. I think it's a good fix that will last for a couple of years and then I'll have to bite the bullet and get a new couch. So still worth it, but not a miracle solution by any means I just picked up my couch foam inserts for my cushions. They are fabulous! It's like a new couch. I'll update later to let you know if they are still fabulous...but seriously they made it so easy and they feel great. Brought in my covers and they put them right in for me. If you need to bring a couch cushion back to life, this is your destination. Two weeks ago, I was the weird guy in the subway carrying a couch cushion. Taking the 7 to the BDFM, I walked through the underground and on the surface balancing a giant, beige, cushion on my head during one of the coldest days of the year. Why was I doing this? My butt was getting hurt by the springs as the foam had been worn down to a shriveled nothing inside of the cushion - happens with a 6-year old couch. So I took to the yelps, and found a bunch of places. A few phone calls and voicemails left, I expanded my search from Queens to Manhattan and found Economy Foam. They do foam. And futons. And foam. Lots of foam. But I needed foam, so I was in the right place. I walked in with my cushion and was brusquely told to go to the back - no problem. Put the cushion on the counter, got it measured 5 different times. No problem. Sat on two foams to decide thickness, went with the medium firm which remains pretty damn firm - might recommend a medium as it's still pretty firm. All told it was $105 to redo the foam for the cushion completely. Looking online, it would be $80 to just get the foam and have to figure out how to do it myself, here they did everything for $105. Not bad at all. Dropped it off at lunchtime, was ready at 6pm. Service was gruff but acceptable. And the results speak for themselves. If you are looking for a couch cushion re-foaming, then come here. If you want great service with a smile, go somewhere else. read more

I'm really confused by the positive recommendations here. I went there this morning and was quoted a pretty crappy price for a custom sized foam cushion. As I left, the guy at the front desk asked me why I was leaving without making a purchase. "Sorry, your prices are too high," I replied. So his response was "Because you come in in the morning, I give you special price" and proceeded to cut the price by over 25%. Now, I certainly appreciate the give-and-take of price negotiation, but I really don't like doing business with a place whose first offer is an out-and-out rip-off. He kept trying to get me to purchase with this weird, almost fetishist offer that "I give you a special price because you come in the morning." WTF? Sorry, another place that gave me an honest place up front is getting my money. read more

I had to buy a futon mattress for my new apartment, so I went to Economy Foam & Futons mostly out of convenience, since I now live nearby. I had a specific type in mind, which a friend had recommended (double-foam wool-wrap futon), and sure enough they had it (and told me it's also one of the more popular ones). The sales persons were all very friendly and helpful, and in no time everything was taken care of: mattress ordered and cover bought. I ended up paying much less than I expected: the prices I'd found online were in the $350 range for the mattress only, but I paid $260 before tax (and an additional $40 or so for the cover). This is somewhat surprising (in a good way, I suppose), but hopefully I won't find that something's wrong with it as I start using it. They deliver in Manhattan (or at least in the neighborhood) for a small fee (I paid $25 if I remember well). It was delivered to my apartment the next day (and I think they also do same day delivery if you go early enough). That was easy, no complaints! read more

Problem: Insufficient crash-space for three simultaneous impending guests. Also, lack of a couch. Solution: AAA Foam & Futon (a.k.a. Economy Foam & Futons) The salesman I talked with is good at selling up ("You can get a $20 upgrade from this mattress to this mattress, or a $100 upgrade, or..."), but if you have your heart set on the cheapest offers (around $200 for futon mattress and frame), they won't badger you about it. Unlike other stores I inquired of and/or looked into online, these guys had futons in stock and could do a same-day delivery if I came in early enough. They delivered outside the neighborhood, up four narrow flights of stairs, then set the whole thing up in under 10 minutes; the delivery fee was more than normal, but I think it was for the stairs and not the distance. (The price was fixed at the time of the sale--I don't want to make it sound like there was funny business, because the whole transaction was wonderfully straightforward.) Great prices + great selection + great service = 5 stars. read more

Ordered some large custom shaped cushions to blackout my dormer windows. The cushions came out shaped exactly like the pattern I gave them. They said it would take 2 weeks but it took 3 weeks. Staff is a bit grouchy and unprofessional which is typical of this kind of small business in NYC. Overall had a good experience and am very happy with my pillows. read more

I dropped off a stool cushion to have new foam put in. First of all they charged extra to shape the foam to the cushion cover. Which they did not do.Then they charged extra to put the foam into the cushion cover. But they put in backwards and ripped the cover in doing so. This place is a total mess. Stay away!!! read more

I purchased a top of the line gold bond 613 futon here back in late March, 2012. I waited till now to review as I wanted to make sure the futon was a good product with no issues. When I visited the store I was helped by a man who knew the products well enough. He was not pushy but rather matter-of-fact. By that time, I had seen lots of mattresses all over the city; inner-springs, latex and so on, (including other futon shops) and I was keen to zero in on every high end futon this store had. He made sure I got to see them and showed me how they were constructed. He gave me time to try them out and wasn't hassling me at all. They had what I wanted in stock and they arranged to ship the next day with a several hour window (I can't recall exactly). The delivery guys showed up right at the start of the delivery window. They assisted in getting the cover on. I tipped the guy pretty good as it is not easy getting those things on with one person. They were very helpful and pleasant. I would have given the store a 5 star review except for two factors - 1. they were supposed to call 10 minutes prior to delivery (although that ended up costing them time as they had to wait for me to get there) and 2. their website could be better organized with regard to product information. Granted my rating is higher because I was ready to buy, I had done my homework for the past month or so and I didn't need a lot education on the difference between futons and other mattresses. This rating also includes the product of which I'm very happy with. Quite pleased in fact because it is as comfortable or more so than non-futon mattresses that cost much more. read more

I have generally found the attitude of store personnel here to be unfriendly and unhelpful. They seem inflexible and impatient, particularly in the foam-cutting area. Prices for foam, and especially for scraps, seem excessive to me and they really bristle at any attempt to bargain the prices lower. Generally speaking, the foam density here is low. There's nothing wrong with low-density foam but it doesn't work for quite a few applications, and Economy would be serving the public better if it had a wider range of foam densities on hand for people to buy. Based on the unpleasant attitude, paucity of high-density foam and the excessive prices for foam that I've experienced at Economy Foam, I've decided to take my (admittedly small) business elsewhere. read more

Due to unreliable info. and poor customer service, Economy Foam & Futon have forced my hand to pen a poor review here. I walked in this shop of unhappy-looking employees a week ago and, had a laundry list of questions answered by an uncertain salesman who directed me towards a 5 1/2 single-sized foam mattress that he said came with a 10-year warranty. (Go prepared with a list of questions as they don't volunteer any information). The charge for the simple piece of foam and a cover, plus a $50 delivery fee for a 4 block delivery on the light-weight 5 1/2 inch single bed mattress seemed excessive, but time-sensitive circumstances led me to agree to the price. I paid by credit card and received a receipt, which, I ,unfortunately, didn't inspect until I got home. There was no mention on it of a warranty and none had been handed to me in the shop. They could easily have written one on the receipt had I the presence of mind to think of it. I expected to take them at their word. There was a small print indicator that no mattresses could be returned or exchanged once they left the shop. The mattress was delivered the next afternoon and I had requested that the delivery guy call beforehand, which he did. I asked if he had the mattress, its cover, and the warranty. He told me that the cover was already on the mattress, but that he was only the delivery guy and I had to contact the shop about the warranty. Not desiring a return to the shop face-to-face confrontation, nor unpleasantness over the phone, I found their email address on the receipt and wrote them about the mattress and warranty including all the details and requesting the warranty be mailed or emailed to me. No answer. The next day I went on their website to confirm that I had the correct email address. The web email form had the same address, so I repeated my detailed request. No answer. On Friday morning, the 5th day after purchase and the 3rd day of emailing them, I repeated my email request, indicating that if they didn't want a poor Yelp review, they needed to get in touch with me to resolve this. No answer. So there you go. Customer service here is nonexistent. And follow-through on a promise of a warranty appears also to be non-existent. Another heads up! If you go buying a mattress here, and exact size is a concern, make certain that you take your own measurements. I ordered a single sized mattress to replace an old one I had bought from Sleepy's. The mattress Economy Foam delivered was not the same dimensions, but considerably larger than the industry standard, so that it doesn't properly fit on my bed frame. Now I'm stuck with it. I visited several futon stores in the NYC area, and this one stood out for its customer service and value. The sales people were helpful and attentive, and willing to show me several options in my budget range. They also quoted a very reasonable price for a nice futon unit. I only deduct a star because the delivery men arrived at 9:10, whereas they were supposed to arrive between 6 and 9. Overall though very pleasant and easy experience. read more

After reading reviews of futon mattresses, I had a pretty good idea what I wanted when I walked in. The saleslady was helpful and only slightly pushy. The price was better than most prices I'd seen online. I was told that delivery to central Queens would be $40. I tried two mattresses over and again. The saleslady did not push me to make a decision. It was only when I voiced my indecision that she repeated that the wool wrap in the Gold Bond 613 (the more expensive mattress) would be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I decided to get it. I paid and asked for delivery the following day between 7 and 9 pm. I don't get home from work until 6:30. I got home the following day at 6:30 and found that my mattress had already been delivered. The delivery guys had tried to call me, but I was on the train and didn't get the call. So...I had planned to give them a nice tip and ask them to put my new futon on the bed and take away the old one. I ended up doing it all myself, a 5'2" middle-aged female. It got done, but today my back hurts. If the delivery guy had come after 7 pm I'd give them 5 stars. The bed is great so far, but I am not happy about the delivery. read more

We had bought two mattresses to put on custom made sofas. Also spent $250 on cotton covers, 2 inches bigger the mattresses, just in case they would shrink. The employee told us we could wash them in cold water, gentle cycle... the covers are now 7 incles shorter than the mattresses (seams are gone too!). So poor work, bad quality. read more

I had a great experience here. The salesman was very straightforward and not pushy. I came in with my girlfriend and we were each looking for a mattress. The prices were set, but I got a student discount and then a small discount on the delivery when I asked for it... overall adding up to a significant amount of money! 15% overall. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. They unfolded the futons and let us lie down on them to try them out, and then were totally cool with me taking the cheaper one with no hassles, even saying that it was very popular. I went to Economy Foam to buy foam and batting to redo my high end sofa's saggy cushions myself, but when I got there I learned that they could do the job for me at a price that made it ridiculous for me to spend time and money gathering materials and the work myself. In fact, the price was half of what one shop had quoted and a quarter of the quote of another. (The visit was much like Steve B. describes in his 12/14/2014 review, except I wouldn't describe the folks as "gruff" and I found the service more than satisfactory.) So I rushed bag home for the cushion covers and 3 days later brought home beautiful cushions that make my sofa look like new. Excellent value - good service, great products, very fair price. My partner and I are in the process of renovating our apartment - and we're at the crucial, dangerous stage of "No! Not one dollar more, so help me, I'm as thoroughly squeezed and spent as a Kardashian's 15 minutes. No. More. Ever." "Please?" [whimper] I visited a conventional mattress retailer - let's call them "Drowsies," shall we? Yeah. Saw two mattresses, one clearly nicer than the other. The cheaper one was about 1100 all told (taxes, delivery, bedbug wrapper included) and the nicer was 1900. Reported them to the boyfriend, with a pretty strong endorsement for the 1900 model but a willingness to go for the 1100 if pressed. He promptly broke into conniptions - from 8000 miles away, no less: "How could anyone pay such a ludicrous price for a mattress?" "Well, the one I bought in 1994 was 800 or so....um, we could go for the $1100-" "But that's still horrible! Totally unacceptable!" "- and one of my work friends recently paid about $2200" "WHAT?!! Was she out of her *mind*?!!!" "Well, admittedly, she wasn't that happy with it - in about a year it started to sag so she suggested-" "This is just taking advantage of the American consumer!" It went on like that for several minutes. (Thank god for Skype.) But later he had a far more productive idea: he suggested a futon. And the light dawned. I'd bought a futon from Economy in 1992 when I was in law school, and was satisfied. So, 19 years later I dropped by the new location on a Sunday (note that they're Sabbath-observant and always close down all day on Saturday, plus early on Friday in winter.) For a little over 350 I ordered a *very* comfy 10" mattress, layered foam and cotton, delivered. It arrived on Wednesday exactly when they said it would. At that price, even if it failed in, say, two years - which I doubt it will - I could buy four more over the next ten years and still come out ahead. Consumer Reports pointed out that even expensive mattresses don't usually last longer than a decade or so, and my colleague with the $2200 mattress couldn't get warranty compensation even though in less than a year it was practically a hammock. So bag the expensive guys, with their intransparent pricing and shady sales practices. Go to the locals, get a futon and save a bundle. One final note: the model I got is very heavy, probably more than an equivalent regular mattress. But worth the extra lifting effort, I think. read more

I've used Economy Foam twice to resuscitate two sofas and they've done awesome work. They're quick, reasonably priced for the quality of work, and the work stands the test of time. The first time I used them to re-stuff my sofa cushions and kept the sofa another 5+ years before moving and getting rid of it. The 2nd time I used them to re-stuff sofa cushions on a 6-month old sofa that was improperly stuffed (thanks, Jennifer Furniture), and bought feather/down pillow inserts for the accompanying crappy throw pillows. I've been delighted by these guys and will find them wherever they land in Chelsea for the next time I need to add more years to my sofa investment. read more

I arrived at 6:40pm tonight and this was the second store I went to because I walked out of the first store on Amsterdam Ave. in the 90's because no one greeted me as I walked in. First thing - I was greeted by a lady and a man behind the register. I told them I was interested in buying a futon mattress only and they said they sold them without the frames. I told them the futon measurements and the man came out from behind the register and pointed me in the right direction. They were so gracious and pleasant that when I told them that I was aware that they closed at 7pm and I would be done soon with my purchase, they said that they would stay open until I finished purchasing/looking - "no rush"! Unbelievable...They had stock of the futon size that I needed and placed it in my vehicle. I bought my futon mattress, a nice cover and pillow and best part I have my guest room all set in my apartment this evening! In the future I will return to this store. I own a 10 year old, leather sofa that is still in great condition. The cushions flattened over time so I had the idea to give it a facelift with new foam inserts instead of buying a new sofa. I found Economy Foam through a friend's recommendation who lives in the neighborhood. The prices were comparable to anything I found online so I decided to take my cushion covers to the store. The price was right, $125/each cushion and 5 hours later I have a new sofa!! read more

But for the mattress itself and the customer service in the store, I have changed my rating to four stars; however, I do not advise using their delivery service, which I believe is contracted. Now, regarding the PERFECT custom-cut the custom-cut mattress I received late last night. I had gone to the W. 8th store with measurements of my old mattress and of the bed and of the bedposts that demanded cut-outs of the mattress corners. The sales person who helped me was courteous, funny, kind, and efficient, taking time to be sure the firmness of the mattress and its size would be what I needed. I now have it on the bed and it is perfect. 12/20 REVIEW RE DELIVERY: Sales person was very good, but I have no idea if mattress is per specifications. At time of purchase, I was told it would be delivered today between 3 and 6 p.m. At 4:17, that changed to between 6 and 7; at 6:46, was told it would be an extra "15 or 20 minutes." It is now 8:35--no mattress. No one answering the phone. Have no idea if I am to still expect delivery. UPDATE re DELIVERY FIASCO: 10:18 p.m., mattress delivered. Call from delivery person at 9:30 p.m. informed me they were "20 minutes away" (asked if I still wanted it delivered "tonight"...). Not only was delivery over four hours later than the original delivery window's no-later-than hour, but also it was three hours later than the second ETA I received today from the store. And when that second ETA, 7:20-ish p.m., came and went, I got two hours of unprofessional silence. (The store, from where I received the 4:17 call re hour's delay--which I appreciated--was closed.) I thought everyone had gone home...WITH my mattress. The delivery fiasco unfortunately turned my experience with Economy Foam and Futon Center into something worse than Yelp's two-starred "Meh.
