This cute little box store on boutique-heavy William St, Paddington is routinely gawked at like one would do at ... Adriano Zumbo's café in Balmain. Still, they're very different in style. This slightly austere and enormously elegant store clearly prescribes to the overblown theory that 'less is more'. Rather than an avalanche of chocolate inside the store there's an allocated number for each - nestled nicely on little trays - that altogether comprise many various types (hard, soft, creamy, fruity, nutty, milk, dark, white). Our favourite ones were the hard toffee chocolate but perhaps check with your dentist first - they really weren't kidding! The best time to go here is during holiday season - Easter is especially great - but it is a smart idea to also go any time you're in the area. Definitely standing room only.

This very cute chocolate shop on very cute Williams Street is an institution in Sydney. The handmade chocolates are both exquisite and delicious. In fact they have gained such a reputation that Just William Chocolates ships internationally! This boutique chocolatier is just as famous for its beautiful packaging, which if you're a lovely packaging sucker like me you'll be totally enchanted by. The treats on offer here may be a little on the pricy side but they do make a fantastic gift. You can spend up to $80 on 30 or so chocolates (wrapped in a rose, literally) but if you've got a smaller budget you can get just a cute a pack of 9 chocolates for $20.

The House of Chocolates has been here as long as I remember - and I grew up in the Eastern Suburbs. It still has an old-fashioned sweet shop kind of feel, I always expect some jolly fat man to come out from the back proffering a tray of freshly made chocolate treats*. (*Note: This has never happened.) We used to come here sometimes after a day at the beach for little hand-made chocolate penguins for a treat, so I have happy memories associated with this place. Add some choc endorphins to that and this is my Happy Place. The chocolates are hand-crafted by Sydney chocolatiers but they also have a small number of imported sweets. My favourites: chilli and salted chocs, and of course the Happy Place penguins.

This old fashioned sweet store will conjure up memories of what life was like when you were a kid. There is so much variety and choice from local Aussie treats to fancy chocolaty imports. They have lollie jars, and sugary options are well as finely finessed hand made goodies. Prices start from $1 and could easy go into the hundreds depending what type of chocolate addict you are. I find this a fun place to try a bit of chocolate experimentation. Why not treat your taste buds to something new by purchasing a new flavour. It's a fun place to bring kids and kids at heart... I would suggest stopping in just to browse, but if you can leave without purchasing something than you have a lot more will power than I do...

The sign outside the door is the clue: it's not closed, it's a chocolate shop and the sunlight that streams through the windows threatens to melt the beautiful glossy orbs arranged in the counter. As soon as you cross the threshold, a glorious chocolaty waft envelops you. A plate with little pieces of chocolate invites you to taste; knowing that as soon as you do you won't be able to resist buying something. The owner and pastry chef of this glorious shop is Carlos Do Carmo. He is incredibly friendly and happy to answer any chocolatey-related questions; having trained at Le Cordon Bleu pastry course, he is an expert chocolatier and pastry chef. His elegant arrangements of domes, swirls and hearts are filled with 26 intriguing flavours such as chai, ginger, chilli, coconut, mint, wine and spice. This is the type of chocolate you eat with eyes closed, savouring the melt and the slow spread of flavour. His Marrakesh dark chocolate truffle was my favourite: fragrant, unique and warm and fantastically chocolaty. But Do Carmo doesn't just make chocolates. His Portugese heritage is evident in his custard tarts, bean tarts and palmiers, made daily. His passion for pastry and his determination to sell only the best, freshest chocolates and pastries is admirable and unusual. If you want to order something in advance, Do Carmo will make it just before you arrange to pick it up, to ensure maximum freshness. I highly recommend the devilishly rich hot chocolates - warm, smooth and guaranteed to satisfy the biggest chocolate craving. Although there isn't much room to sit and enjoy, Do Carmo is incredibly welcoming and there are a few items of elegant cast iron furniture to perch on. This is a wonderfully authentic and fresh chocolate shop, where you can be sure everything is of the highest quality. You'd be mad not to go here.

In fact, as Vanderwell's owner explains, the chocolates spend less time in transit than the people of Bruges do when they decide to visit Australia. Such a lightening delivery time undoubtedly contributes to the freshness of these chocolates. The most popular is a rich hazelnut praline, but my personal favourite is a vanilla medallion: a crisp layer of dark chocolate, filled with an oozingly rich vanilla cream. Amongst others, there are horse-shaped pralines, strawberry creams, mocha blocks and fruit and nut buttons. Tucked away in a back street of Double Bay, this shop is a gem of a discovery. The perfect present, especially when delicately gift wrapped in the Vanderwell box, don't be surprised if the recipient doesn't want to share the contents with you. Oh, one other thing, the owner is charming, but very very chatty - don't attempt to buy chocolates here if you are in a rush.

The cafe offers plenty of options such as cakes, waffles, hot chocolate, coffee, teas and chocolate fondue sets but to name a few things. The hot chocolates on offer are of a good standard but my favourite thing to order is the White Chocolate Chai. The White Chocolate Chai arrives out pipping hot in a tea infuser. You place the infuser over your mug and push to release the flavours. The White chocolate blends beautifully with the chai leaves and offers a couple of mugs worth which is great. The hot chocolates are good here too but I have had better in other cafe's so usually wouldn't order it from here. They are famous for the waffles which just don't do it for me. A little over priced I feel and that's the same for the chocolate fondue. With that said I think they offer plenty of dessert options and generally is something for everyone on the menu. The cafe also has a shop that sells a range of chocolate related products such as fondue sets, mugs, chocolate flakes, waffles and many chocolates. The staff take a really strong front in regards to selling the products they offer which is great to see. Their knowledge and enthusiasm is awesome and the lady we encountered knew the history of the company as well as its extensive range. Great option in Bondi for a pre or post event cinema snack or drink.
