The House of Chocolates has been here as long as I remember - and I grew up in the Eastern Suburbs. It still has an old-fashioned sweet shop kind of feel, I always expect some jolly fat man to come out from the back proffering a tray of freshly made chocolate treats*. (*Note: This has never happened.) We used to come here sometimes after a day at the beach for little hand-made chocolate penguins for a treat, so I have happy memories associated with this place. Add some choc endorphins to that and this is my Happy Place. The chocolates are hand-crafted by Sydney chocolatiers but they also have a small number of imported sweets. My favourites: chilli and salted chocs, and of course the Happy Place penguins.

They were out of the salted caramel, that was the shake my husband wanted originally. I overheard them telling a lady that they were out of apple juice but could make up fresh juice, you get served these massive shakes with no serviettes or spoons to help you out and their eftpos machine wasn't working. The staff are so attentive and has the best manners you can imagine. They keep asking you what else you want to try before you buy unlike other stores where they wish you'd stop trying their samples. Everybody would be happy if you were given Godiva chocolate box for any occasion. So we had better know where we can get them. Unfortunately, very expensive chocolates are not treated as of very special items here. In some other countries like in Japan, France, Belgium and e.t.c., these chocolates are treated extremely special with very cool and lovely decorations and displays.

It may not have that professional chocolatier feel (the business card I received was printer from a household printer, on ordinary paper), but in its place it has a very homely feeling. In the window are boxes filled with various types of chocolates, and on the inside are some gift boxes, so that you may give to loved ones. The store isn't huge, theres more to see in the window than there is inside, but the man inside is very friendly and helpful, and the whole place feels like Grandma's place when she's baking. Makes you feel at home, ya know? I reckon there's a bit more life and love in a box of Richards chocolates than the cold definition of a manufactured one. I guess it depends where your heart is in relation to your wallet, your pallat, and your pride. But come and see it, it's really cool.

On my last day in Sydney, I woke up early and high tailed it to the store. I got there when they just opened and decided to purchase items that would not melt easily, as I had to ship them to Hawaii. The sales person behind the counter was very help in my directing me to the items that would keep during air shipment. After choosing the goodies for my family, I decided to purchase the date and marzipan chocolate bar for my honey and myself. My only disappointment was that it was too early for ice cream. Yes, even for me. If not, I would have had an ice cream sandwich. Sigh... :(

Definitely high in sugar though so wouldn't get if you're trying to diet. The acai base tastes the best out of all the acai places here and it's also very neat. I've noticed the other acai bowl places nearby can be messy and sticky on the outside. The standard bowl sizes are also the same price but double the size of the bowls you'll find at other acai places. Five star service as well.
