Of course, you pay a handsome sum for the chance to eat proper British food (including Marmite), but in my book, it's worth every penny.

Screw your markets and bazaars with their aromas of herbs and spices, nothing awakens the senses like the playful crinkle of a monster munch packet or the shine in your eye when the sun catches off the packaging of a Capri Sun (The only place I have found in Australia that stocks them FYI). Expect a friendly greeting from the Welsh lady who's on the counter and get lost in the selection of stuff you'd forgotten you'd missed. Apart from Taste Ireland, which I have also reviewed there is nowhere that I have come across that has as much selection as these guys. While it is mostly sweets and confectionery there is a huge selection of grocery items available too. You name it they pretty much have it. from washing up liquids, to powders, sauces, stuffing, cordials, soft drinks and football merchandise as well. The selection is absolutely massive. if you're missing home and some of your favorite grub pop in and see these guys. It'll be money and time well spent. If you can't make it into the city, they do online ordering too.

And they display their candy in test tubes and beakers, which can be quite misleading if you're not on the alert. They have all kinds of strange, counter-intuitive packaging... like flavoured popcorn in what appear to be milk cartons! Chocolate-covered nuts in beakers! Candy-coated chocolate in test-tubes! It's magnificent. The sales assistants strut around in their lab coats, presumably to further confuse (and excite) unsuspecting patrons. With such an awesome idea and execution, the candied treats are, of course, a little more expensive than average, but that was to be expected. This is a great once-in-a-while indulgence.

The packaging does make them presentable to make an excellent gift for those of us suffering from sweet teeth, but keep in mind if purchasing for yourself, you are also paying for the fancy packaging. Happy Lab is about much more than packaging though with offerings such as: Alberts, which are hazelnuts coated in Belgian chocolate, then coated in sugar or Karma Nutras, which are almonds coated in variety of flavours including vanilla and crème brulee. Also if you want to pretend you're being healthy you can go for the strawberry, apple or mango Munch Crunch. They are priced high, but still with what is being offered Happy Lab is setting the temptation resistance bar fairly high.

They're located in The Rocks shopping area which is close to the Harbor Bridge. I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of the workers choppin' up the candy sticks. There are a wide range of flavaflavs to choose from such as apple, blackberry, banana, citrus mix and hella much more. They also have themed candies aka lollies like Harry Potter, Peter rabbit, Marvel and a few others. All candy comes prepackaged in a resealable pouch. I chose the lime koala, Studio Ghilbli mix, passion fruit and the Peter Rabbit. The koalas and the passionfruit were my favorites! They tasted exactly like lime and passionfruit and I loved the design on them. It was difficult figuring out what flavors the themed ones were but the lollies were still tasty and cute. Overall, these lollies were tasty and reasonably priced (7AUS=4.67USD). They made a great souvenirs for my friends and coworkers. I would definitely come back here when in Sydney to try more of their other lollies and watch them do their thang!

The candies are tasty and you can even try their samples. While I did like them, I have found the same type of candies in Japan and Japanese make them more perfect in designs, shapes and cutting. The sign outside the door is the clue: it's not closed, it's a chocolate shop and the sunlight that streams through the windows threatens to melt the beautiful glossy orbs arranged in the counter. As soon as you cross the threshold, a glorious chocolaty waft envelops you. A plate with little pieces of chocolate invites you to taste; knowing that as soon as you do you won't be able to resist buying something. The owner and pastry chef of this glorious shop is Carlos Do Carmo. He is incredibly friendly and happy to answer any chocolatey-related questions; having trained at Le Cordon Bleu pastry course, he is an expert chocolatier and pastry chef. His elegant arrangements of domes, swirls and hearts are filled with 26 intriguing flavours such as chai, ginger, chilli, coconut, mint, wine and spice. This is the type of chocolate you eat with eyes closed, savouring the melt and the slow spread of flavour. His Marrakesh dark chocolate truffle was my favourite: fragrant, unique and warm and fantastically chocolaty. But Do Carmo doesn't just make chocolates. His Portugese heritage is evident in his custard tarts, bean tarts and palmiers, made daily. His passion for pastry and his determination to sell only the best, freshest chocolates and pastries is admirable and unusual. If you want to order something in advance, Do Carmo will make it just before you arrange to pick it up, to ensure maximum freshness. I highly recommend the devilishly rich hot chocolates - warm, smooth and guaranteed to satisfy the biggest chocolate craving. Although there isn't much room to sit and enjoy, Do Carmo is incredibly welcoming and there are a few items of elegant cast iron furniture to perch on. This is a wonderfully authentic and fresh chocolate shop, where you can be sure everything is of the highest quality. You'd be mad not to go here.
