I had been using a "basic" cpa for many years who only charged a few hundred bucks for my tax returns. As my income has increased the past couple years, I decided to use a better CPA who can provide me with the proper advice to save on taxes. In early 2022, John filed my 2021 tax return. Basically, his office staff plug in the numbers in the computer off of the docs you provide. Then John and you will have a zoom meeting to go over the numbers to make sure they're all correct. During the meeting, I asked John what I can do to save on taxes. He said "the more taxes I pay the better, that means I am making more money." He also said that I could buy a business and if the business has a loss then I can deduct taxes. I thought to myself why would I go through the trouble to buy a business and lose money. At least that was my understanding of it. The tax filing fee was about $2000 which was fine. Now fast forward to 2023, after looking into more advanced tax strategies and paying another high level CPA $10,000 one year consultation fee ( not including filing) I realized that John failed to mention or explain to me how to take advantage of cost segregation and bonus depreciation to save me tons of money. I don't want to explain how to do it to you. But because of John, I lost $100K of tax savings and $200k opportunity cost. Now I am doing it this year, but we are in a much worse overall investment environment. We cannot get that opportunity back. Disclosure: there was nothing John could've done my 2021 tax return because it was 2022 when I met him. But if he gave me proper advice during the meeting, I could have done certain things in 2022 to save hundreds of thousands on taxes. Now I just need to find a corner to cry. John is not a bad CPA. By all means, you should try him. But I didn't like his mentality that the more taxes I pay the better. The wealthiest Americans pay 0 taxes. I pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. My conclusion is that John might be an amazing tax filer. But I need tax planning. And I don't feel that he specializes in real estate , I do real estate. Now I am with a CPA specialized in real estate. My advice is pay someone 10k or 20k tax advisory fee, you have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars. P.S.: , My rich friend who sold real estate this year has a $1 million dollar tax liability. Thank God he talked to me and I referred him to the proper people. He's going to save $1 million this year. Just to tell you, if you have a large tax burden, please find someone for tax planning not to just tax filing. read more

I can't speak to any of the current 5 star reviews but I can say that it was a major factor in using this firm. That was a huge mistake. This firm has raised so many questions not only from me and my wife but also from the California Franchise Tax Board who is now saying that my taxes were filed incorrectly for the previous year. His response: we can write a letter. Unbelievable. Issues still unresolved and I can't get a decent response from John or any of his associates. Completely unprofessional and unnerving given that you walk into an office such as this with all your income information and social security numbers and he speaks with you for 5 minutes and then bills you for fees that have no rhyme or reason. Suggesting that my wife and I file separately to get a bigger tax refund? Saying that taxes were filed incorrectly last year when he was the one who filed them? Then continues to get his associates to call asking if we still want to file with them individually this year. If this is an extreme case or an outlier then I'd be surprised. We've been told many times that our situation is not complicated at all. So why is there so much confusion? Why the ambiguity? What's up with the gross misrepresentation of the facts? read more
