I love roadside restaurants such as K-18 cafe! I was road tripping a a 4Runner delivery from Detroit to its owner in Boulder. I had tired of expressways and spent the day on state and county highways. I was getting hungry and happened upon K-18 Cafe. The lovely Keera (not a typo) was my server. The chicken fried steak was great and drowning gravy. I added quite a bit of pepper to remind me of home. We were touring two sites in Lucus, KS and decided we needed to have lunch. The Grassroots Artist Center suggested this roadside cafe. The name was same as the route passing the cafe. It did not disappoint, it was a simple cafe with decent food. I had an egg, bacon and cheese biscuit with tater tots, and my husband had the BLT. We shared a piece of apple al-amode. My egg, bacon & cheese was too big for my biscuit so toast probably would have been more appropriate. I deconstructed my sandwich and ate it with a knife and fork. It was very good and the biscuit was nice and soft. The tater tots were crisp on the outside with a soft center.Finally the BLT had plenty of bacon. The server was friendly and helpful. If we are ever in this area again, we would go back. read more

You must try their pies, so luscious. I truly wanted to stay and eat all. The blueberry was rich and delish with a little scoop of vanilla ice cream I was in heaven. The coffee was nice to wash it down. The waitress was so friendly and talkative. This place has become one our favorites to drop in and have a bite. Definitely old school which is nice. They have daily specials and a good list of desserts too. Breakfast was decent, took a little while to get my water though due to them having to flush the bad water before they got to the good water deeper in the pipes. My fiancée really liked her French toast and coffee. My biscuits and gravy were pretty subpar, but at least I was able to eat it. Now for context on this next part I'm from a small town in Kansas and I am used to eating in small town diners, dives, and hole in the wall places. I usually enjoy the small town atmosphere and camaraderie. I don't mind that the place needs wiped down with Clorox or that the windows haven't been cleaned in ages. I don't even mind some flies or scurrying critter, but this place is bad. At dinner my family had to leave because the fruit flies were flying in our mouths and food. It was the worst infestation I've ever seen, as soon as the food hit the table the swarm came in. I don't know how many flies I ate but it was definitely more than three before I gave up. We had to leave because more and more gnats kept coming. Service was pretty awful, but I'd still give it a 5 if that was all. It appeared to be the our waitress's first job and her manager/mom was constantly chastising her loudly. Our waitress struggled at every turn from arguing about not wanting to take our order with her coworkers, to entering our orders incorrectly, forgetting what she was doing and asking us the same questions multiple times, to not knowing how to work the register. I don't hold it against the girl, who could've only been 15, because she is merely adapting to her environment. I was sure to be polite and patient, but that being said it was bad. The atmosphere is dirty and alienating. If you're not a local you'll be referred to as "lake people" and your service is not their priority. The approach seems off because you'd expect a business in a dying town like Lucas to try to earn new business and value the business the lake brings. But I guess the town is dying for a reason. The K-18 special though... Boy howdy... I didn't expect much and was still disappointed. It's literally a plain cold bun with a piece of preformed well done meat patty. No condiments, lettuce, onion or anything. I wish I had gotten a picture because that burger epitomizes the restaurant. I even ordered it with cheese and didn't even get that. I really don't know the thought process that went into making their namesake burger so sad. I guess it's probably the same thought process that has gone into fixing the hole in the wall when you walk in and the mold on the ceiling in the bathroom. TLDR; Decent breakfast. read more

Located next to the conoco gas station. Yelp got it wrong, hopefully they will change it (already made my suggested location change) One of the few food options in Lucas, KS. Population less than 400 However, was delighted to try their homemade white bread and pies made fresh daily. Would definitely eat here after stopping at Garden if Eden. K-18 Cafe is a great place for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Came in for breakfast while vacationing in Kansas and had a great breakfast. My son loved the cinnamon roll, my wife said the French Toast melted in her mouth and I found the Biscuits and Gravy and two eggs on the side delicious. I definitely will be skipping lunch today. The place is very clean, the servers are very friendly and the kitchen is fast! Booths are roomy and the room is always friendly and chatty. When in the Lucas/Wilson/Sylvan Grove, KS area, stop in, have a good meal and make some new friends. read more

You can't go wrong with a small diner in the middle of no where!! We enjoyed staying the night in the Airbnb across the street and then enjoyed the best biscuits and gravy I have ever had!!!
