My daughter started at saint johns last year for pre-k and like any other mom I was scared how my…read moredaughter was going to adjust. She had Mrs Kelly pat year and I honestly cannot say good enough things about this woman, she was not only a wonderful teacher to my daughter but she sent us photos and videos almost everyday to keep us parents updated with everything going on in class. At dismissal she would always pull me aside to tell me anything that happened with my daughter throughout the day. She would said "it's nothing bad I just thought u would want to know..." she is so kind and nurturing to all the children in her class which was 16:1 with two teachers aids. I don't believe they make teachers like this anymore, she was just beyond wonderful to my daughter and really put my mind at ease knowing she was in good hands with Mrs Kelly! This year for kindergarten my daughter has Mrs Grassi. She is so great as well! She really pushes the kids to be independent and strong minded. She is tough in a sense, she likes things done in a certain way and has high expectations of the children which I like because it keeps my daughter motivated to do more and achieve more. She gives out a good amount of homework & if the child misses a day of school she sends them home the missed class work to be done at the earliest convenience so they don't completely miss out. Mrs Grassi as well as Mrs Kelly also sends us photos and weekly updates/work plans for the kids to our parent portal which I enjoy because I always know what the kids are doing and what to expect in the coming week. So far I've had a very happy experience with this school and these teachers.

I think what resonated, is that they prepare kids to learn and adapt, so we can become the adult we were meant to be. It's easy to keep a child busy and entertained. Working with kids and treating them with respect, showing them how to learn on their own, is what pre-school should be for everybody. I had a very difficult time with my parents - I struggled for independence for literally no reason. Robin never talked down to me, and helped me cope with the very difficult task of being a toddler. The friends I made, especially Sophia(I love you) are lifelong and foundational. I had to say something - looking at my life, Sarah Lawrence was a key developmental period. My child started the 2s program this fall (2014) and I couldn't be happier with our experience. Everyone-from the Director to the teachers to the receptionist-is not only incredibly loving and warm but also child development nerds. These people know children. Deeply. The people at the ECC are true professionals. They have graduate degrees in early childhood education, many have been teaching for decades, and they all love a good geek-out on anything kid related. Anytime I bring up a topic I'm interested whomever I am speaking with pulls out books, recommends films, and sends me articles about the topic. They are not inly knowledgeable about how children learn and develop but they are passionate about it. I've learned so much about how children learn and process their world and can truly say that I am a better parent for being part of this community. For example I never knew how important narrative play was. Ever since we started the ECC I now try to narrate and get my child to narrate what he is doing when he is playing. His verbal, storytelling, and memory skills have developed so much. On the subject of play- this school takes play very, very seriously. Much child development research indicates that play is of tantamount importance-it is how children learn and develop the skills and foundation for later life success. The book Children's Play: The Roots of Reading by Edward Zigler is a great place to to start your overview of the research. This is not an "academic" preschool. This is a preschool where children are given the space and opportunity to be children and learn in developmentally appropriate ways, which research shows prepares them so well for later academic study. It is also a place where your child will develop their love and passion for learning. My child is so excited about school-it's the best part of our week. It's truly breathtaking to see his curiosity nurtured and to know that his first experience with school is joyous and fun-he hasn't gotten the joy and curiosity beaten out of him in the name of Common Core and standardized testing. The community is very diverse-economically, socially, ethnically, and racially and my child is exposed to what the real world looks like. Families come from as south as the Upper West Side and as north as Brewster. ECC families represent the full economic and social spectrum of the US, an achievement that is sadly too rare in the highly stratified society of New York. Families are very involved-it truly feels like a community. The Parents Association is active and sponsors several activities throughout the year for both children and adults that are always well attended and enjoyed. I think it's a great alternative and even superior option in some ways to Bank Street or Barnard's Toddler Center for upper Manhattan and Bronx families because it has more space and outdoor play areas. Children go outside to play in the expansive play areas every class day even in cold weather. The 2s program does require a parent/primary caregiver -can't be a secondary caregiver- to attend with the child the whole year. This only works if one or more parents have flexible jobs or stay at home. I structured my work schedule to be able to accompany my child but not everyone has that privilege. Starting in the 3s program children are dropped off but in accordance with the school philosophy each child separates at their own pace. Lastly, the ECC is a lab school-one of the oldest of it's kind. It serves as a laboratory environment for undergraduate and graduate students. There are always one or several students in addition to teachers and teacher assistants in the classroom. Their main objective is to study and learn from the children but having so many adults in the classroom provides for amazing one-on-one attention. Students (undergrads/grads) are always supervised and mentored by the teacher in the classroom.

I am here just for a swim meet. Pool has 8 lanes and seating. But I thinks the people running the…read moremeet is ripping off parents. They charged $5 for adults to see their kid swim and doesn't not guarantee seating! Although I understand they trying to make money for the school, that's a shame. Not only did they charge entrance to a completely packed swim seated area, where people were standing or had to sit on the floor but then they made more money from charging snacks. Also they charge different entrance fee for different days. My husband took my son during the week and he was charged $2 and I went Sunday for $5. I'm sure the school is great but from a parent that just want to see their child compete i found it crazy to pay and have to stand the whole 4 hours.

I am writing this review to bring the antics of an employee to light. My sister, who will be…read morestarting the tenth grade this year, needed to hand in forms in order to play volleyball. There was a mix up in the paper forms, which we are very understanding of; this is not the point of our concern. The employee who handled my sister, Clara (thick Spanish accent) was unnecessarily rude to my sister. She went by herself, which she confirmed she could do over the phone. When she left, she called me on the phone nearly crying because of the way she was treated. We are from NYC, so we have dealt with our fair share of rude and mean people in our time so I was very surprised to hear her at the point of tears over the phone. We understand that sometimes, paperwork is very specific and tedious so some things go wrong. Instead of just telling her what was wrong, the employee, Clara, INSISTED on berating my sister telling her things such as "it's all your fault" "you're irresponsible" "that's not our problem". I'm 18 years old with plenty of life experience and even I cannot handle being spoken to like that, let alone a 15 year old by herself handling something like this. When I called back trying to talk to someone about the situation, I was also met with a terrible attitude off the bat. Coincidentally, I was placed with Clara. When I was explaining the situation, she interrupted me to ask how old I was and I told her my age. I thought this was very unprofessional because whether I'm 18 or whether I'm 35 was not the issue. I'm calling because YOU were rude to my sister. She told me, "I am an adult, you do not talk to me like that." I am an adult too, so I found the comment very inappropriate because she basically spoke down on me by doubting my maturity. If you, an "adult" woman with experience in that couldn't handle me talking to you the same way you spoke to my sister, what makes you think my sister would've handled being spoken to like that? It's sick how some adults get off on feeling powerful and feel the need to berate young people just because they can. Clara was upset once I got on the phone because she realized she couldn't pick on someone her own size.

On the other side of the grounds there were swings, a jungle gym, monkey bars, and a slide. Mrs. Timmy was nice. Honestly I think I liked her because she was kind of a hottie. Mrs. Sweeney and Scarlatta were great teachers. The principal was a very nice dude. I don't remember his name. :( But he was compassionate when I was sent to him by Cami for sneaking into the girls locker room from the neighboring woodshop classroom after she dared me to. No one was in there and it didn't didn't seem like that big a deal.. such a betrayal!!! I cried. Wimpy then and now.. Also, my birdhouse leaked. And i lainted the ski hill shoe I made in Pottery class brown. Why would a ski hill, even one on a shoe, be brown? Huge mistake. Gross. I had a Venezuela country assignment in 5th grade. I remember something about lianas. I also studied George Washington Carver. I believe it was one of the first bigtime books I ever read. And I am still a big fan of Dr. Carver. People can talk smack, but he was the man. Innovation after innovation. People lack respect for humility and problem solvers. It's all about glory these days.. But back then it was Tina Turner and we weren't sure what love had to do with it, only that girls just wanna have fun. Benetton was in. At least for a while. Care Bears. And Mrs. Wertheimer and her frogs doled out some great assignments to create a faux historical document and also to debate a topic. I would say what I chose but it is very Un p.c. and I lost the debate. And to history. I was wrong. That was the last time.
