Kabania is a truly unique experience that I think deserves more attention. It's feels like camping sans the tents or intense preparation.
Kabania offers overnight accommodations in two different forms: a cabin on stilts or a cabinita. The cabin is a very simple wooden cabin that's elevated off the ground (their way of being environmentally friendly) and contains a wood stove and has room to sleep 4.
The Cabanita is a much smaller version of the cabin that is also elevated high into the trees. The difference is that the Cabanita does not have much space in it except for your belongings and two persons.
I rented the cabin on stilts in February of 2014. It was a brutally cold night (-27) yet my gf and I were completely cozied and warm with our cast iron fireplace. We actually cracked the window to let some cold air in, just to give you an idea of how effective the heating was. To prep for this trip, we only had to bring some bedding (mattress is provided), our clothing, and our food to cook. The cabins do not come with kitchenettes but there is a fully equipped kitchen and living room in the communal cabins- all of which is located within walking distance.
The communal kitchen had a fridge with a basket designated for our food, and since we went midweek, the kitchen and living rooms were almost always completely free. There's also two stoves and two ovens for guests to cook in, should there be more than one person there to cook. The fully equipped kitchen was very clean and had everything we needed to prepare our food. I actually made a cheese and meat platter for our late supper thinking that I wouldn't be able to get a the stove or the proper pans to make a fuller meal, but I wouldn't hesitate to actually make a full supper here. They had it all.
The living room area is quite large with lots of seating, including cushions, chairs and hammocks. It was a great place to chill with a bottle of wine. They've got tons of board games to rummage through, as well as a shuffled iPod playing some soft tunes (I remember hearing Florence, lana del Rey, and a few québécois artists too). There's lots of electrical outlets here as well, so you can charge up your phones or electronics as you make supper or relax in the living room.
The lands itself seemed very large. It was a good five minute walk from the parking lot to the cabin. They actually kept sleighs by the entrance for you to put your belongings on, making the transport of our things a lot easier.
We didn't get to explore the entire site since it was brutally cold, but it seemed like it could be a lot of fun when the weather warms up. There's a firepit area, a lake, some hiking trails, and some water activities too.
To top off this glowing review, this place is also fantastic in terms of their customer service. It being so cold those days, my car battery decided to give out and my gf and I were stuck in the parking lot trying to get my car jumped with my portable battery pack. One of the workers noticed I was having a hard time and actually got his own car (which I'll add, was far away) and came back to boost me. Above and beyond.
I would highly recommend this place for a romantic getaway or a weekend with friends or family. It's got a great vibe and is super secluded to make you feel like you're very far away, when it's really just an hours way from Laval. Can't wait to go back. read more
