Managed to get a table in the dining room, and decided to order a few of the starters and a bottle of local wine. Rather than go for the standard pub gear which was also on offer, we opted for oysters kilpatrick, marinaded pork belly skewers, arancini balls and grilled mushrooms with sliched brioche. All the food was good, and while nothing was particularly outstanding, there was definitely nothing bad either. Staff were enthusiastic, helpful and made great recommendations. You move to a table, and order many many dishes (because they are nice) - we had the Jerusalem artichokes, the pate, the jamon and fig, a gorgeously simple green salad, a roasted pig and the bark-wrapped trout, the sweets, the sticky wines... great portions and fantastic dishes (creamy pate with pickled cherries, the artichokes were finger licking good, the jamon and gorgeous figs.. ...enough, you get the point...). Staff were fantastic, and I only wish the wine selection was slightly better balanced. However, our host pointed us to a really really good Mataro. The SA restaurant to beat in 2016 is simply called Seed. Don't ever complain that Clare is too far. This is a pilgrimage that your palate deserves.

The staff are always friendly, the order at the counter service is efficient and great for groups (none of that - "I had x,y,z... well who had the a,b,c" messiness that comes with splitting the bill). It can get incredibly busy and bookings are reccommended (even if you just call on the day or when you are on your way in) They host a weekly quiz night and there is a huge members base that participate frequently - a lot of local competition. Highly recommended.

My friends got the seafood platter and the schnitzel with dianne gravy. They have a salad bar with all meals which was good, unfortunately as happens quite often there was meat in the potato salad. Food was quick and served with a smile. My salad was beautiful - a tad heavy on the olives but beautiful none the less. My friends enjoyed their meals too. In part it felt like an inner-city pub, yet it still retained that rural feeling about it, probably because there was a building out the back called 'The Barn' that happened to be a function room (and there was also a barbecue under the shelter). Okay, it still seemed to be a place where the locals would sit at the bar chatting with the bartender, but I didn't let that get to me, especially with the lounge area sporting some rather interesting artwork.
