This beach is our absolute favorite dreamy paradise. Stunning stretch of soft white sand and clear turquoise water. It's less crowded than nearby Waikiki, offering a more relaxed, local vibe. The gentle waves make it perfect for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. With scenic views and plenty of shade from nearby trees. Clean, peaceful, and perfect picturesque. Parking can get filled up quickly recommend to arrive early. Kids and I visited on a Thursday afternoon and scored a parking space. Absolutely beautiful evening with a mix of locals walking the beach with their significant other or with their dogs and the tourist taking in the wonderful opportunity to take a dip in the ocean. The setting sun on the opposite side of the island makes a picture view through the palm trees as the sky changes into pastel colors that make living the aloha here extra special. Went here with my boyfriend and we like taking up a spot at the RIGHT far end of the beach. In this area, my boyfriend likes the fishing. I enjoyed watching him fish. I also like the beach. The waves are just right and there's families everywhere. The waves at the time were not still but gentle enough for young children. Please watch your children regardless the strength of the waves. My boyfriend loved this fishing spot because he saw a lot of this "rainbow" looking fish that he liked catching and releasing. I think that fish was called a Palani. There's a mix of locals and tourists. I'd say majority at the time I was there were locals. The overall park and beach area are clean. We are going to return much more prepared with picnic set up and my boyfriend will be fishing again. Love this beach. read more

A friend recommended Kailua Beach to us so we headed there on one of our last days. They have a parking lot but we couldn't find a spot until driving around a second time. Your best bet is to just follow someone walking out to leave and wait until they get in the car to leave. This beach was much more relaxing than Waikiki and more family oriented. The winds and waves were more calm than North Shore/Haleiwa Beach. There were a lot of people on a Sunday at lunchtime, but it didn't feel too crowded at all. We had plenty of room to swim without running into anyone. I also liked that there was a lot of shade on the beach so we could find a great spot to sit without needing an umbrella. There are restrooms here and a lot of grassy areas if you want to just sit on the grass and see the ocean, without going down into the sand. It's less than a 30 minute drive from Honolulu so it's very accessible. This will definitely be a stop on our next trip again! read more

Aloha, Absolutely beautiful! The white sand is so soft. We visited this beach twice, the first time we just drove by in the afternoon. Of course, we could not find any parking. The following day we arrived right before they opened @ 8 am. I believe or was it 7am? It was early! There are restrooms available, the parking lot has about 25-35 spots and there are a few benches facing the clear blue ocean. Lastly, it's located on the windward side of the island so you might want to layer. read more

This is one of the best beaches we went to. We went on a Tuesday afternoon and the parking was so crowded. Thankfully we got lucky with finding a spot. So, I highly recommend you plan this one out and go earlier. This beach is perfect for families. The water was so blue and the sand was smooth with no rocks. There were some waves but nothing too serious and it is perfect for swimming. They have kayaking and bathrooms and showers. I recommend bringing a floatie. There are plenty of trees for shade. Absolutely love this beach. Swim every day a couple hours at least. Water is ridiculously beautiful, love to bring the dog though it says no animals? Clearly it's ignored, yay. Mostly locals and visitors coming to enjoy paradise. It's far from touristy, you won't find hotels in Kailua, buzz's steak house across the beach in Kailua is about the only place with that view, they keep it quaint and charming, but it's all about that water and sand. After visiting a different beach yesterday, this one was so much nicer! The water feels like a quintessential Hawaii beach experience: sky blue, clear waters; creamy colored, soft sand. It was pretty relaxing to bob around in the warm water. There was a nice breeze on the day we went and it wasn't too crowded even though we came on a weekend. We didn't have trouble finding a spot to lie down on the beach but parking is tricky as there's only a single lot. If you're patient and don't mind waiting a little bit, you're usually able to find a spot after awhile though. I'd like to visit Lanikai next time, which is right next door and probably more crowded. read more

Hawaii as you see in pictures! So amazed by the beautiful beach that we went back here more often than any other beach. Why it took us so many visits to Hawaii to find this place? We don't know. But we loved it! The shore breaks were good enough for kids to play, sandy enough to build castles, and quiet enough to take in the tree-lined beach without too many tourists. We've always hit up Waikiki beach, famous for any tourist visiting Hawaii, but maybe it's the age. We just wanted peace and serenity while our kids enjoyed the waters. Finding this place and another one nearby was so fortunate. Beware: Got stung by a jellyfish on the back of my thighs. I thought it was seaweed, but the burn got worse and worse. Didn't have anyone pee on me. That's gross. But I did get vinegar and kept that on me. Luckily, the stings weren't too bad that it subsided within 3-4 hours. Two long scars horizontal across. Painful!! Found out from a local that more jellyfish do come around in June around that area. Maybe I should've probed for more local tips like which part of the island is good to stay away from when it's shark season. read more

Kailua has become one of my favorite beaches in Oahu next to Lanikai, literally and figuratively. It's miles and miles of shoreline covered in soft powdery sand. With trees adorning some parts of the park, you can easily find a shade to lounge under if you don't have a beach umbrella. I am most fond of the charming swing I found where I got to soak in all the beauty this magical beach has to offer: sun, sand, wind, waves, and the all shades of blue you can imagine from the water. The long shoreline is perfect for running and spreads out all the beach bums so it doesn't feel crowded. Since our rental was in Kailua, you can only imagine the memories we have in this beach from coming here almost everyday. From running at sunrise, lounging at the beach all day, swimming until sunset, and night strolling with the velvety feel of sand on your feet, Kailua will always have a soft spot in my heart. The water may not be as clear as Hanauma Bay but everything else makes up for it. Some picnic tables and a public toilet facility is available which many find convenient to rinse off and more importantly, they have a parking lot. Come early if you don't want to hang around in the car waiting for someone to leave. read more

Kailua makes it to the top 10 beaches in the world. It has 3 miles of Sandy white beach and beautiful blue water. On windy days there's a lot of sail surfers. For years I stayed in Waikiki and hung out at the beaches close to the condo. Now that I discovered Kailua and Lanakai beaches, I head here in the morning. What a gorgeous park with a great space inside for a wedding....which is why we went. We went to Hawaii for the first time and it was breathtaking. The scenery at this park was no different. Mountains, blue ocean, perfect temperature... it was a beautiful wedding and we had a great time! Really. As good as it gets (as beaches go). Scenic, safe, perfect water conditions and family friendly. Powder / fine-like sand and a non-rocky ocean bottom (important for those non-swimmers who just like to wade in the water and jump when the waves roll in). When I'm feeling stressed and need to completely unwind and let go, I come here (amongst my other favorite beaches and spots). Water is unbelievably blue-green and CLEAR! Beach days here really remind me how blessed I am to call this island home. Parking: always an issue especially on the weekends and holidays. Expect to park far and walk to the beach if you can't find a spot. Weekdays are the best days to come out to frolic and play. Beach activities: great place to launch your SUP and kayaks as flat island and the "mokes" are just a few paddles away (ok...so I underestimate the distance). On super windy days you'll find a huge amount of kite-boarders and windsurfers too. Overall, just a really nice place to enjoy the sun, surf and sand. By the boat ramp there is convenient bathroom facilities as well as an outdoor shower. There is another facility more central to the beach park too. One of my favorite things about this beach park is the shroud of trees that line the beach. It's perfect for beach picnics without all the sun and ample shade for those who dislike the sun (gasp!!). read more

Going to the beach in December is not a bad thing - if you live in Hawaii. Some days are clear and sunny - instead of cold, rainy, and overcast... like yesterday! After seeing my fellow Yeeps, Christa and Eric Robert, checking in to local beach spots on Oahu, I was prompted to get my beach fix. Instead of going to my favorite South Shore beaches, I drove about 20 minutes (10 miles) north of Honolulu to Kailua Beach. For "townies", just drive over the Pali, through Kailua Town, pass the residential area, over the little bridge, and right across from Buzz's Steak House, is Kailua Beach. I was a bit thrown off because I was not able to turn into the first parking lot - it was blocked off with construction barriers. In the past, I had met some co-workers there to sprinkle ashes of our dearly departed Fran W., RN. Luckily, I knew that there was a 2nd parking area because I had met another co-worker there to go kayaking. Yes, Kailua Beach has many activities to offer besides swimming, sun bathing, sand castle building, and picnicking. There are sailboats, wind surfers, and paddle boarders in the water at various times. It's quite breezy on the Windward side - the wind feels crisper and stronger here than Waikiki and Ala Moana. The sand seems more powdery, looks whiter and feels finer, too! So, if you want a peaceful, beautiful, and different beach, try Kailua. There's free parking, clean restrooms, and a lot of Hawaiian paradise! read more

About a 30 minute drive outside of Waikiki ... definitely worth it. Not too packed, and the ocean is very shallow here. I saw a lot of kayakers, seems fun. If you go here, bring a body board so you can swim to the little island about a mile away. Some snorkeling gear would do too! I tried to swim out to the little island that kayakers go to but it's a lot further than it looks. Best guess, I probably swam out about 200 yards ... surprisingly I don't think it was any deeper than 6-7 feet. Much cleaner than the beaches on Waikiki! read more

Beautiful turquoise water under the bright blue skies. Great sandy space on an incline for beach chairs, but watch out for the tide to come up quickly. Most people placed their things under the trees in the "woodsy" area to keep them from getting wet. You're on the windy side so sometimes you'll get a strong wave come through. But don't let that stop you. It's still gorgeous, warm water, and everyone is just having a giddy old time. The bathroom is nearby, but a bit smelly, cramped, and a lot of the locks don't work. That's why I took a star off. I guess it could be worse. There is a nice space for changing, but it's at the entrance so there's not much privacy. There's a rope swing in the woodsy area if you want to give it a shot. You'll immediately realize how weak/strong your upper body is. LOL. But the ocean makes for an awesome back drop! Free ample parking. There are actually two lots (the bathroom is the center), so don't give up and drive around! read more

Beautiful beach, but it's getting overrun by tourists and snowbirds- I realized after going there a couple times, it's a Dog Beach . Entitled Owners let their dogs run all over the beach with people having to make room for them..? Only like to go there at night when everyone goes home and swim at night. It's just too crowded ! I was doing some laps toward flat island and almost got run over by a kite surfer-- landed right next to my head ! It's just to damn crowded !!! ***Pre/During COVID-19 Visit*** Even before I moved to Kailua, I was always visiting this place whenever I returned to Oahu. Hint: it gets crowded!!! Come early as parking can easily be taken in an hour or even less. Before tourism reopened, it was a lot nicer due to it being less crowded, but it's a very popular beach so expect tons of people to be there. The powdery white sands feels super good! You can see people paddle boarding, kayaking to the Mokes, kicking back and the overall vibe is just pure aloha. It isn't my favorite beach, but it doesn't stop me from visiting it.
