I initially discovered The Mad Tatter while searching for a piercer to assist with a challenging piece of jewelry, but it seemed like the right place for my first tattoo--an Alice in Wonderland design I'd been wanting of for over a decade. And it was a wonderful decision. Isaac, the owner and artist, brought my vision to life in ways I couldn't have imagined. The consultation was smooth, creative, and collaborative. He listened carefully, offered thoughtful suggestions, and designed a piece that beautifully captured what Alice means to me. I left the consultation feeling confident that this was the place for me. On tattoo day, despite my nerves, the entire staff made me feel at ease. Isaac was patient and encouraging, making the process as comfortable as possible. Having my best friend and brother with me was helpful, but the overall environment was just right. The tattoo took about three hours, including a few small breaks, and my brother even got a couple of piercings while we were there. It was quite the experience! Even after the tattoo was completed, the customer service was excellent. When I noticed a minor issue with the bandage after leaving, the shop promptly had me return and resolved it--no questions asked. Throughout the healing process, they were just a phone call away, always happy to answer any questions I had as a first-timer. Reflecting on my first tattoo, I realize I went a bit bigger than planned, but I have no regrets. The size, placement, and intricate details all came together perfectly for me. The Mad Tatter is now my preferred shop for both tattoos and piercings, and I highly recommend them. I even have a few projects in mind. In fact, I've already sent friends their way, and one is currently working on a major piercing project with the Rabbit McPiercer! Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. My daughter wanted a memorial piece of an airplane on her neck. I wanted an infinity symbol with two names. The artist, Eric Polland, did an AMAZING job. I could feel it was time to make this happen, so I started perusing artists in the area and found Virtu's website. I saw a photo of an ancient symbol that I have been carrying around for those same 15 years, in the hopes of using it in my tattoo vision. Clearly, I was being "called" to the shop. I walked in just hoping to have a consultation, but then I met Larry. He's an award-winning artist with an AMAZING talent (just look at the artwork he produces daily and on a whim). We vibed immediately and I knew I had found my artist and scheduled time right away (this guy is going to be BUSY)! Over the next week I shared my vision and some images I wanted to use; either as referential artwork or as inspiration to this amazing artist. When we finally met for my session with Larry, I have NEVER felt more "heard," as the pictures in my head started to take actual shape before my eyes under the expertise of Larry's talented hands. Because he's such a good listener, he was able to take what was in my head and physically produce it! He's truly & amazingly gifted!!! We tweaked it, shaped it as we went, and I've never felt more confident that his free-hand was exactly what this tattoo required. It was a long and intense session but the result left me speechless... and still does. I can't look at my tattoo without losing the words to describe how absolutely ecstatic I am over this incredible design and Larry's REMARKABLE talent!!! It's a sometimes fearful experience to commit one's flesh to an artist's interpretation... but with Larry, you're going to feel heard, watch your vision become reality and have a TRUE artist become a part of your physical being until you leave this Earth. I wanted to come in on a Tuesday, and she said they normally do by appointment only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and accommodated my schedule for an afternoon appointment. When I arrived, I did end up having to wait for some time for her to prepare and sketch up my design, but that is the only "negative" part of my experience. I had a custom piece, drawn by a friend. Jen was very good about getting it down as I wanted, asking me lots of questions, listening to my feedback and doing what I asked for. The actual work itself was relatively very quick; Jen is deft and professional at what she does. She stopped many times throughout to ask me questions about how I wanted things done. She gave me her suggestions but ultimately listened to what I wanted. They also own Scorpion Studio here in Houston! What a cool coincidence. She told me if I needed any touch up work, to just call her and let her know and she would let them know I was coming by. Very awesome and professional! All in all, I am super happy with my experience and my piece and would definitely recommend these guys. The shop itself is cute (it used to be a brothel, lols) and I liked how they had it set up/decorated. I gave a "moderate" price rating because I feel that it was on the level with what most any other shop would have charged me.

The shop is run by Richard and Jen Stell and good ol Bubba Reaves. Both Richard and Bubba have learned from some of the best tattooers around. They have serious resumes. But don't take my word for it, just walk in and look at their work. This place is clean! It is (to my knowledge) the first and only shop to pass health inspections on the first walk through in Oklahoma. They have taken great care to keep it that way. The shop is also beautiful in terms of design. Original tattoo flash and painting decorate the walls. (Its probably the only place around with original Ed Hardy paintings) So, if you love tattooing and solid work from friendly folks this is your place. If you want terrible tattoos, go some where else.
