The ladies here don't even say if they're handmade or anything, but anything for a memento I guess. Across the street is the fruits and produce. Lots of flies and bugs around. Parking lot is on rough rubble and it's a one way and small. Be careful and take care driving in, don't want any popped tires or anything. Overall a quick visit for us after walking through. There was also a seamstress at work on her sewing machine; it seems that she offers on-the-spot alterations, which is genius. The crowd was mostly locals, with some visitors. The Red Barn food truck was very, very popular, and for good reason. They serve different types of grilled cheese sandwiches and they are uh-MA-zing. I got "the Frenchman": crisply toasted bread, heavily buttered, piled with high-quality cheese and two types of mushrooms. You must also get a side of their flavorful homemade tomato soup so you can dunk your sandwich. Oh, the sandwiches also come with a pickle spear and taro chips. Besides the Red Barn, there were other food trucks selling Chinese bao (filled steamed buns), filipino food (pancit and halo halo, need I say more), and boba tea. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few of the food trucks, but they all seemed to have their fans. Parking can be tricky during peak hours. And if you park on the side of the road, be on the lookout for pedestrians and cars.

The farm operates on a sustainable agriculture motto. I like that a lot. The staff is local. The farm is clean and professionally operated. The farm is unique as the mushrooms are grown in bottles utilizing a Japanese method. Lani and Jane took care of the group today. Our first stop was the substrate mixer, autoclave, and bottle cleaning station. Very interesting. Next we moved inside. A very informative video explains the whole process. We were shown the production areas within the plant. The mushrooms are amazing. Everything you thought you knew about eating and cooking mushrooms is about to change. The staff prepared a bountiful selection of their mushrooms. They explained the proper technique to cook mushrooms to gain the most health benefits, and the flavor, wow! We picked up some of the mushroom value added products available. Cookies and tea. The cookies were amazing. The tea will wait until we get home. Will we go again? Of course, when friends come to visit, this will be on the schedule.

Mike and Tricia have read and gained wisdom from the professionals on how you can adjust the sweetness of the tomatoes, which I was dumbfounded and never knew that you could tweak a tomato. This is a business that involves all of the ohana and is done so with passion and a commitment towards quality. Mike and Tricia have a heart to share their knowledge and wisdom with other farmers as well, to build them up and see them become fruitful. There is a push towards bringing the community together and truly getting to know your neighbors. They have gone out of their way to share what they have with others, those who can afford it and to those who have run into hard times. I wish everyone could try their tomatoes, then you'd know what I am talking about, and draw your own conclusion, to this heavenly fruit (I still consider it a vegetable, no matter what). I live on Oahu and so anytime I visit Kona, I make sure I stop at the local open market in Kamuela to buy these.
