This place was so cool and well worth the ticket price!!! My boyfriend is really into planes and the military so we stopped by to check this mueseum out. I wasn't expecting much because those topics are not usually interesting to me but i was pleasantly surprised. The way in which they have their information layed out was easy to follow and intriguing. There were 3 floors so many different places to stop and read about aviation. Outside in the gated area, there were 10 or more planes that you can actually go into and touch. One of them, the Ryan international, is fully open and has the original seats in it as well. Not to mention, there are a ton of planes inside the building as well. One of the best parts about this museum is the lookout area in the middle of the building that has a 360 view around the building. read more

It was cool to see the planes from both inside and outside. It was also cool to see the interior of the old Wichita airport terminal before it got moved to the west side. The control tower has a decent view of the Wichita skyline and learning about the vintage planes were interesting. read more

Visited the museum on a recent trip to Wichita because my boyfriend wanted to experience some of the aviation history. The museum is inside a cool art deco building. There are planes outside that you are able to look in and stand next to. The highlight of the museum was going up to the air tower and seeing the view. Probably a more fun experience for children. Museum was not busy for a Wednesday afternoon; realized when we got there that Tuesday's are buy one get one free on tickets. Good place to experience the aviation history of Wichita. read more

Wonderful Art Deco Building with a relief mural of the Spirit of St. Louis above the Entry, airplane inspired wrought iron railings, even Craftsman style roof downspouts (not Gargoyles but still great). The 3 story inside Atrium is being restored to it's original form and is comparable to New York's Ellis Island Center in style. Wichita is the Home of "Rosie the Riveter" and impressive exhibits inside are being developed to tell the inspiring stories of Women in Aviation History (especially Amelia Earhart, the brave women B-29 pilots of WWII, the Kansas business women that ran the companies that made the "Aviation Capital of the World", and more). The Tuskegee exhibit is in-progress and will be another to look forward to. Of course there are Aircraft and also the Legacies of Wichita companies like Lear, Cessna, Beechcraft, Boeing, Swallow, Textron, and many others but this Museum is more than that. It will eventually tell the story of America with its spectrum of races, genders, & socioeconomic classes seized the opportunities that Aviation provided to make America the World's Leader ... and it's traceable to Wichita. It's telling the Story of American Aviation from its Home of Wichita but more importantly its telling the Story of America being built by its many different peoples. Wichita is the Air Capitol of the World. The museum is shaping up to be the crowning jewel in this history. Can you hear Fred Astaire tap dancing through the main foyer? The exhibits are awesome and this is an amazing venue. Don't let the history pass you by. read more

I really can't review it because they closed at 3pm for a special event, even though the sign says they close at 5pm, so we consoled ourselves by walking the perimeter of the fence, looking at the huge planes, small planes and enjoying the yellow brick architecture of the building the best we could on a cool, cloudy day. We came because a lady at work said she heard it was about to close permanently. I really want to visit before they close, maybe snag a commemorative T-shirt before they pass into oblivion and leave distant memories behind. This place is fascinating on the outside. John G's review is pretty spot on but I will add a few things. I would say I have a 'romantic' or historical interest in aviation. This museum, and the art-deco building itself, manage to satisfy my appetite for that kind of experience. It's in a historic building with a tower near McConnell AFB and Boeing. You can climb up in the tower and get a view of the the retired airplanes below and the tankers taking off at McConnell. My former bf (pilot and aviation nut) and I went a few years back for his birthday. We got to talking with the nice lady at the front desk. We had the place to ourselves that day and as we meandered inside, we saw that the lovely lady at the desk was in a photograph on the wall with a brief blurb about her place in aviation and Wichita history. From the KAM web site: "Mary VanScyoc, still a museum volunteer, was the nation's first female air traffic control operator, working in the tower beginning in 1944. She was on duty when the airport's main hangar, used as an administration building while construction continued on the terminal, burned down in 1945. She spotted the burning hangar during her shift, closed down the airport and stopped all air travel coming in or out." Seems I'd thought she was the first female civilian air traffic controller but I'd have to check on that. Anyway, she graciously took a photo with my bf. I'm sure we weren't the first to have that experience but what a wonderful surprise. And, oh yeah, they have a lot of cool airplanes and airplane stuff! read more

An alright museum that could use some TLC. When you walk in, you wonder if anyone is actually here, as no one was at the front desk and the museum was empty. After waiting around at the front desk looking at stuff in their gift shop, a lady hurried out of an office across the way, and took my money for admission. Let's just say for $10, I was expecting more out of this museum, but it didn't deliver. Probably the best thing that this museum has going for it is the historical building that it's housed in, as well as the vintage aircraft of defunct manufacturers that are on display. They had quite a few on display that I hadn't seen before, and plenty of good information on them. With that being said, with so many civil aviation aircraft manufacturers calling Wichita home, the museum sorely disappointed me in that aspect, as they just had a small corner dedicated to Cessna, and a couple local aircraft examples languishing outside. Speaking of languishing aircraft outside, all of the aircraft outside were in a sad state as all have been horribly weathered due to being out in the elements, the 737 was possibly once a gold color, but you can't tell anymore, and the other aircraft have parts falling of and informational print outs duct taped to the fuselage. It's really saddening to see the aircraft in that kind of condition. Overall, it's definitely a small town museum with an okay inventory, but nothing worth making the detour for if it is out of your way. read more

I came to the museum today, April 20th, 2016 in hopes of making a visit. As I drove around the front of the terminal and circled back toward the parking lot a man in a red pickup truck flagged me down as asked " What are you doing here? Can I help you? " I said no thank you and again he asked "what do you want, we are closed." The gate was open and there were about 8-10 cars in the parking lot so I assumed you were open. Your website also said that the museum was open from 10:00 until 5:00. I certainly did not expect to be received in this fashion! Maybe this explains why the museum is losing money. Maybe if this person was an employee or a volunteer he could use some people skills training. You see I use to work in that control tower in 1966-1968 while on active duty in the USAF and was really looking forward to a nostalgic visit. You certainly ruined that idea. I would give this place five stars except somebody needs to give them a true museum budget. There is a ton of great aviation history both inside the building and out on the tarmac. The stuff on the tarmac is being destroyed by the weather. On the other hand you can walk up and put your hand on the leading edge of any wing that you're tell enough to reach. I had visited Kansas Aviation Museum Villa a number of years ago -while there were building Kansas Aviation Museum Center. We spent 3 hours and probably could have used a few more hours if time allowed. Pack a lunch and make a day of it...and do also visit the Villa! read more

Cool museum for aviation nerds! It's small but has unique pieces. They have a few planes on the outdoor tarmac that you can go in which is cool. They do have a kid's area with simulators which are always fun to play with! Wish they had more pieces, we went through it in about 2 hours. read more

KAM was on my list when I went to Wichita for a job assignment. The Saturday I had planned to go wasn't good because they were closed for a private party so I ended up going on Sunday. Being a Air Force Brat and working in Naval Aviation for 20+ years Ive been to several Aviation museums and found this one to be a really nice one. There are many displays of the local Aviation companies and history of their relation to Wichita. I was quite surprised how detailed and laid out the exhibits are. (5th star) If you read everything there you will need several hours if not a entire day. Also there are displays of the Airlines that once flew out of Wichita and their related history. Inside there are also some aircraft engine displays, a area for kids to release some energy, vintage aircraft and educational areas. The building itself is interesting. Outside there are several planes that you can walk around and you can tour the inside of the FedEx cargo 727. The area outside can seem like a aircraft grave yard as there are some planes randomly parked that seem out of place. Overall, I enjoyed the KAM and recommend it for something cheap to do. read more

I'm not real big on aviation but I loved it. The staff are volunteer and just great people. They were quick to tell you history and show you projects they were working on. My daughter, age 2, loved it. Learned so much in a museum from people with a passion for aviation. read more

Let me just be upfront and say, airplanes aren't really my thing. I went here while on vacation and with four young nieces and nephews in tow, and it was mostly for their benefit that we chose this place to fill an afternoon. This isn't your typical stuffy museum. It has a lot of things for kids to do, such as playing in old cockpits, making paper airplanes and throwing them from a story up (which was by far the children's favorite), and a vast number of touchable objects. Great place to entertain children. For the adults, it has various placards to read, huge mounted engines, a full-body flight simulator (that is amazing), a smaller video game style flight simulator, and, of course, full airplanes both inside the building and outside of it. When we went, we were fortunate enough to get to talk to some gentlemen restoring an old plane. They were very informative and friendly, and we spent some time distracting them from their rather interesting work. There is quite a bit to see outside and I was informed that the building is not heated on the inside, so you should definitely take a jacket. On the downside, it is a fairly small museum and if you are neither a child nor very interested in aviation, it's probably going to be a pretty dull and short experience. read more
